Automated synthesis of mechanical designs is an important step towards the development of an intelligent CAD system. Research into methods for supporting conceptual design using automated synthesis has attracted much attention in the past decades. The research work presented here is based on an empirical study of the process of synthesis of multiple state mechanical devices. As a background to the work, the paper explores concepts of what mechanical device, state, single state and multiple state are, and in the context of the above observational studies, attempts to identify the outstanding issues for supporting multiple state synthesis of mechanical devices.

Automated synthesis of mechanical designs is an important step towards the development of an intelligent CAD system. Research into methods for supporting conceptual design using automated synthesis has attracted much attention in the past decades. In our research, ten experimental studies are conducted to find out how designers synthesize solution concepts for multi-state mechanical devices. The designers are asked to think aloud, while carrying out the synthesis. These design synthesis processes are video recorded. It has been found that modification of kinematic pairs and mechanisms is the major activity carried out by all the designers. This paper presents an analysis of these synthesis processes using configuration space and topology graph to identify and classify the types of modifications that take place. Understanding of these modification processes and the context in which they happened is crucial to develop a system for supporting design synthesis of multiple state mechanical devices that is capable of creating a comprehensive variety of solution alternatives.

This paper presents a Radix-4(3) based FFT architecture suitable for OFDM based WLAN applications. The radix-4(3) parallel unrolled architecture presented here, uses a radix-4 butterfly unit which takes all four inputs in parallel and can selectively produce one out of the four outputs. A 64 point FFT processor based on the proposed architecture has been implemented in UMC 130nm 1P8M CMOS process with a maximum clock frequency of 100 MHz and area of 0.83mm(2). The proposed processor provides a throughput of four times the clock rate and can finish one 64 point FFT computation in 16 clock cycles. For IEEE 802.11a/g WLAN, the processor needs to be operated at a clock rate of 5 MHz with a power consumption of 2.27 mW which is 27% less than the previously reported low power implementations.

[ES]Este proyecto tiene como objetivo desarrollar una línea de investigación de opciones de sensorización de un mecanismo mediante acelerómetros. Se construirá para ello un sistema de adquisición y tratamiento de señales destinado a la sensorización de un mecanismo de cinemática paralela en base a los conocimientos adquiridos durante el curso. Se trabajará además con otros alumnos para llevar a cabo el diseño y montaje de un robot prototipo de cinemática paralela de dos grados de libertad sobre el que se experimentará y llevará a cabo el proyecto. Se plantean de este modo dos líneas de trabajo que se desarrollarán en este proyecto: Elaboración de un sistema de adquisición y tratamiento de señales adaptable a distintos sensores. Utilización de señales de múltiples acelerómetros para conocer en primer lugar aceleración, y de ser posible, posición de puntos de interés del mecanismo.

A presente pesquisa Design de jornal impresso: a relação entre formato e usabilidade tem como principal objetivo reforçar a importância do envolvimento do usuário no design de produtos, através da compreensão da influência que o formato definido pelo tamanho das páginas e organização dos cadernos exerce sobre a usabilidade do jornal impresso. São apresentados os aspectos tecnológicos e econômicos relacionados a esse produto e verificado a influência exercida por eles sobre o formato. É feito um mapeamento sobre os principais aspectos do design de jornais e sobre os diferentes formatos de jornais, suas origens e sua relevância para o design de jornais. Busca-se mapear o formato dos jornais em diferentes mercados e os possíveis impactos das mudanças de formato na circulação, no conteúdo e na publicidade dos jornais impressos. Faz-se uma revisão do panorama atual dos jornais eletrônicos e suas possíveis interferências nos hábitos de leitura. Revisa-se a bibliografia referente à usabilidade, concentrando-se na metodologia de design de documentos e sua aplicabilidade para testes de usabilidade em jornais impressos. Por fim, descreve-se a pesquisa de campo através de entrevistas com especialistas em design de jornais, de observações sistemáticas em gráficas de jornal e sobre o mercado de jornais impressos da cidade do Rio de Janeiro e de testes de usabilidade aplicados a jornais. Conclui-se que, considerando o público participante dos testes profissionais que trabalham com impressão de jornais , apenas o aspecto do formato relacionado à organização dos cadernos parece exercer influência sobre a usabilidade dos jornais.

Recent research into the acquisition of spoken language has stressed the importance of learning through embodied linguistic interaction with caregivers rather than through passive observation. However the necessity of interaction makes experimental work into the simulation of infant speech acquisition difficult because of the technical complexity of building real-time embodied systems. In this paper we present KLAIR: a software toolkit for building simulations of spoken language acquisition through interactions with a virtual infant. The main part of KLAIR is a sensori-motor server that supplies a client machine learning application with a virtual infant on screen that can see, hear and speak. By encapsulating the real-time complexities of audio and video processing within a server that will run on a modern PC, we hope that KLAIR will encourage and facilitate more experimental research into spoken language acquisition through interaction. Purpose - In recent years there has been increasing interest in Product Service Systems (PSSs) as a business model for selling integrated product and service offerings. To date, there has been extensive research into the benefits of PSS to manufacturers and their customers, but there has been limited research into the effect of PSS on the upstream supply chain. This paper seeks to address this gap in the research. Design/methodology/approach - The research uses case-based research which is appropriate for exploratory research of this type. In-depth interviews were conducted with key personnel in a focal firm and two members of its supply chain, and the results were analysed to identify emergent themes.b Findings - The research has identified differences in supplier behaviour dependent on their role in PSS delivery and their relationship with the PSS provider. In particular, it suggests that for a successful partnership it is important to align the objectives between PSS provider and suppliers. Originality/value - This research provides a detailed investigation into a PSS supply chain and highlights the complexity of roles and relationships among the organizations within it. It will be of value to other PSS researchers and organizations transitioning to the delivery of PSS. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

This paper reports some results from a major research project on the integration of environmental issues into design in the electrical and electronic industry. Product development practice and ecodesign methods were examined along with qualitative data from 19 manufacturers, using interviews and an action research methodology. A four-stage framework for ecodesign practice resulted: first, to make an environmental assessment from a life cycle viewpoint; then to communicate the analysis and collect feedback; thirdly to prioritize the environmental issues and finally to complete the design using relevant tools and methods. This 'ARPI' framework (analyse, report, prioritize, improve) applies to both strategic and operational levels. Initial testing of the framework in collaborating companies highlighted difficulties with communication with design teams; the role of 'ecodesign champions' is explained. Other challenges are the development of customized tools and the training of designers. The study concludes that the prioritization step is critical, as it simplifies and clarifies the tasks in design that take place after formulation of the specification.
