In this dissertation, we study the behavior of exciton-polariton quasiparticles in semiconductor microcavities, under the sourceless and lossless conditions.

First, we simplify the original model by removing the photon dispersion term, thus effectively turn the PDEs system to an ODEs system,

and investigate the behavior of the resulting system, including the equilibrium points and the wave functions of the excitons and the photons.

Second, we add the dispersion term for the excitons to the original model and prove that the band of the discontinuous solitons now become dark solitons.

Third, we employ the Strang-splitting method to our sytem of PDEs and prove the first-order and second-order error bounds in the $H^1$ norm and the $L_2$ norm, respectively.

Using this numerical result, we analyze the stability of the steady state bright soliton solution. This solution revolves around the $x$-axis as time progresses

and the perturbed soliton also rotates around the $x$-axis and tracks closely in terms of amplitude but lags behind the exact one. Our numerical result shows orbital

stability but no $L_2$ stability.

We examine the evolution of a bistable reaction in a one-dimensional stretching flow, as a model for chaotic advection. We derive two reduced systems of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) for the dynamics of the governing advection-reaction-diffusion partial differential equations (PDE), for pulse-like and for plateau-like solutions, based on a non-perturbative approach. This reduction allows us to study the dynamics in two cases: first, close to a saddle-node bifurcation at which a pair of nontrivial steady states are born as the dimensionless reaction rate (Damkoehler number) is increased, and, second, for large Damkoehler number, far away from the bifurcation. The main aim is to investigate the initial-value problem and to determine when an initial condition subject to chaotic stirring will decay to zero and when it will give rise to a nonzero final state. Comparisons with full PDE simulations show that the reduced pulse model accurately predicts the threshold amplitude for a pulse initial condition to give rise to a nontrivial final steady state, and that the reduced plateau model gives an accurate picture of the dynamics of the system at large Damkoehler number. The square root velocity framework is a method in shape analysis to define a distance between curves and functional data. Identifying two curves, if the differ by a reparametrization leads to the quotient space of unparametrized curves. In this paper we study analytical and topological aspects of this construction for the class of absolutely continuous curves. We show that the square root velocity transform is a homeomorphism and that the action of the reparametrization semigroup is continuous. We also show that given two $C^1$-curves, there exist optimal reparametrizations realising the minimal distance between the unparametrized curves represented by them.

Composition methods are useful when solving Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) as they increase the order of accuracy of a given basic numerical integration scheme. We will focus on sy-mmetric composition methods involving some basic second order symmetric integrator with different step sizes [17]. The introduction of symmetries into these methods simplifies the order conditions and reduces the number of unknowns. Several authors have worked in the search of the coefficients of these type of methods: the best method of order 8 has 17 stages [24], methods of order 8 and 15 stages were given in [29, 39, 40], 10-order methods of 31, 33 and 35 stages have been also found [24, 34]. In this work some techniques that we have built to obtain 10-order symmetric composition methods of symmetric integrators of s = 31 stages (16 order conditions) are explored. Given some starting coefficients that satisfy the simplest five order conditions, the process followed to obtain the coefficients that satisfy the sixteen order conditions is provided.

Previous vectorial results had constant ω, no matrix (i.e. A ( ⋅ ) ≡ 0 ) and considered: constant control-vertices (Amar & Mariconda) and, more recently, integrable control-vertices (ourselves).
