Network airlines have been increasingly focusing their operations on hub airports through the exploitation of connecting traffic, allowing them to take advantage of economies of traffic density, which are unequivocal in the airline industry. Less attention has been devoted to airlines' decisions on point-to-point thin routes, which could be served using different aircraft technologies and different business models. This paper examines, both theoretically and empirically, the impact on airlines' networks of the two major innovations in the airline industry in the last two decades: the regional jet technology and the low-cost business model. We show that, under certain circumstances, direct services on point-to-point thin routes can be viable and thus airlines may be interested in deviating passengers out of the hub. PURPOSE: Bilingual aphasia generally affects both languages. However, the age of acquisition of the second language (L2) seems to play a role in the anatomo-functional correlation of the syntactical/grammatical processes, thus potentially influencing the L2 syntactic impairment following a stroke. The present study aims to analyze the influence of late age of acquisition of the L2 on syntactic impairment in bilingual aphasic patients. METHODS: Twelve late bilingual participants (speaking French as L2 and either English, German, Italian or Spanish as L1) with stroke-induced aphasia participated in the study. The MAST or BAT aphasia batteries were used to evaluate overall aphasia score. An auditory syntactic judgement task was developed and used to test participants syntactic performance. RESULTS: The overall aphasia scores did not differ between L1 and L2. In a multiple case analysis, only one patient had lower scores in L2. However, four patients presented significantly lower performances in syntactic processing in the late L2 than in their native language (L1). In these four patients the infarct was localized, either exclusively or at least partially, in the pre-rolandic region. CONCLUSION: This pilot study suggests that, in late bilingual aphasics, syntactic judgment abilities may be more severely impaired in L2, and that this syntactic deficit is most likely to occur following anterior lesions.

An examination of the impact in the US and EU markets of two major innovations in the provision of air services on thin routes - regional jet technology and the low-cost business model - reveals significant differences. In the US, regional airlines monopolize a high proportion of thin routes, whereas low-cost carriers are dominant on these routes in Europe. Our results have different implications for business and leisure travelers, given that regional services provide a higher frequency of flights (at the expense of higher fares), while low-cost services offer lower fares (at the expense of lower flight frequencies). Diruthenium tetracarbonyl complexes of the type [Ru2(CO)4(l2-g2-O2CR)2L2] containing a Ru-Ru backbone with four equatorial carbonyl ligands, two carboxylato bridges, and two axial two-electron ligands in a sawhorse-like geometry have been synthesized with porphyrin-derived substituents in the axial ligands [1: R is CH3, L is 5-(4-pyridyl)-10,15,20-triphenyl-21,23H-porphyrin], in the bridging carboxylato ligands [2: RCO2H is 5-(4-carboxyphenyl)-10,15,20-triphenyl-21,23H-porphyrin, L is PPh3; 3: RCO2H is 5-(4-carboxyphenyl)-10,15,20-triphenyl-21,23H-porphyrin, L is 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphatricyclo [3.3.1.1]decane], or in both positions [4: RCO2H is 5-(4-carboxyphenyl)-10,15,20-triphenyl-21,23H-porphyrin, L is 5-(4-pyridyl)-10,15,20-triphenyl-21,23H-porphyrin]. Compounds 1-3 were assessed on different types of human cancer cells and normal cells. Their uptake by cells was quantified by fluorescence and checked by fluorescence microscopy. These compounds were taken up by human HeLa cervix and A2780 and Ovcar ovarian carcinoma cells but not by normal cells and other cancer cell lines (A549 pulmonary, Me300 melanoma, PC3 and LnCap prostate, KB head and neck, MDAMB231 and MCF7 breast, or HT29 colon cancer cells). The compounds demonstrated no cytotoxicity in the absence of laser irradiation but exhibited good phototoxicities in HeLa and A2780 cells when exposed to laser light at 652 nm, displaying an LD50 between 1.5 and 6.5 J/cm2 in these two cell lines and more than 15 J/cm2 for the others. Thus, these types of porphyric compound present specificity for cancer cell lines of the female reproductive system and not for normal cells; thus being promising new organometallic photosensitizers.

Introduction: Clinical symptoms and degree of spinal stenosis based on cross sectional dural sac area correlate only weakly in lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) patients. We conceived a four grade classification system (A, B, C & D) based on the morphology of the dural sac and its contents as seen on T2 axial MRI images. The categories take into account the rootlet/CSF ratio. We applied this grading to three patient groups: LSS scheduled for surgery; LSS following conservative treatment and patients with low back pain (LBP) without leg pain. Materials/Methods: A total of 346 T2 axial MRI images taken from LSS and LBP patients were included in this retroperspective study. 37 patients had decompressive surgery (132 MRI images), 31 conservative treatment (116 MRI images) and 27 patients had unspecific LBP (98 MRI images). Dural sac cross-sectional surface area and morphological grading of the canal were measured digitally both at disc and pedicle level. Intra- and inter-observer reliability were assessed (weighted Cohen's kappa statistics) from 50 MRI images taken from the surgery group. Results: At the most severe disc level, grade A (mild stenosis) was found in 3% of MRI images of the surgical group as opposed to 51% in the conservatively treated group and 85% in the LBP group. Grade B occurred in 8% of the surgical, 20% of the conservative and was negligible in LBP group (below 1%). Grade C and D (severe stenosis) was found in 89% of the surgical group, as opposed to 30% in conservative group and 11% in LBP group. The grades of all groups were comparable at the pedicle levels, exhibiting in 94% a grade A with a maximum at the A1 grade. Pedicle and disc level cross-sectional area were smallest in the surgery group and smaller in the conservative group as compared to the LBP group at the levels L2, L3 and L4. According to cross-sectional area measurements patients from the surgery group seems to have smaller vertebral canal although this was not related to smaller stature. Validation of grading: Average intra-and inter observer kappas were 0.76 and 0.69 respectively, for physicians working in the study originating institution. Combining all observers the kappa values were 0.57 +/- 0.19. and 0.44 +/- 0.19 respectively. Dural sac cross-sectional area measurements showed no statistically significant differences between observers. Conclusion: Since no specific measurement tools are needed the grading suits everyday clinical practice and favours communication of degree of stenosis between practising physicians. In our institution Grade A stenosis was less likely to require surgical treatment. This grading can therefore be an aid in surgical patient selection in teaching units.

Preliminary studies were carried out to investigate the role of filarial specific antibodies, raised in an animal model against the filarial parasite, Brugia malayi (sub-periodic), in blocking their early development in an experimental mosquito host, Aedes aegypti (Liverpool strain). In order to generate filarial specific antibodies, Mongolian gerbils, Meriones unguiculatus, were immunized either with live microfilariae (mf) of B. malayi or their homogenate. Mf were harvested from the peritoneal cavity of Mongolian gerbils with patent infection of B. malayi and fed to A. aegypti along with the blood from immunized animals. Development of the parasite in infected mosquitoes was monitored until they reached infective stage larvae (L3). Fewer number of parasites developed to first stage (L1) and subsequently to L2 and L3 in mosquitoes fed with blood of immunized animals, when compared to those fed with blood of control animals. The results thus indicated that filarial parasite specific antibodies present in the blood of the immunized animals resulted in the reduction of number of larvae of B. malayi developing in the mosquito host.

Aquest treball pretén millorar la comprensió lectora dels assistents als clubs de Lectura Fàcil existents a Catalunya a través de la presentació d'una guia de conducció de clubs que presenta un model d'estratègies a seguir en les sessions de lectura. Aquestes orientacions seran útils als conductors novells que no són ni especialistes en didàctica de la llengua ni en literatura i que necessiten resoldre els dubtes de dinamització lectora en els col·lectius amb dificultats lectores. Les estratègies d'aprenentatge proposades provenen de la teoria constructivista en educació que aposta per una actitud molt més activa del lector i aprenent adult d'una L2. De la valoració organitzativa i estratègica de les sessions d'alguns dels clubs i, més concretament, de la tasca duta a terme durant tres anys al Club de Lectura Fàcil de la Biblioteca Mestre Martí Tauler de Rubí, del "com es llegeix" i del si "es comprèn allò llegit", sorgeix la necessitat que el conductor planifiqui acuradament les sessions de treball atenent uns objectius de lectura i el treball d'unes habilitats lectores concretes. Així, doncs, en aquest treball s'ofereixen algunes eines per a la planificació d'aquestes sessions de lectura.

Thioredoxins comprise a conserved family of redox regulators involved in many biological processes, including stress resistance and aging. We report that the C. elegans thioredoxin TRX-1 acts in ASJ head sensory neurons as a novel modulator of the insulin-like neuropeptide DAF-28 during dauer formation. We show that increased formation of stress-resistant, long-lived dauer larvae in mutants for the gene encoding the insulin-like neuropeptide DAF-28 requires TRX-1 acting in ASJ neurons, upstream of the insulin-like receptor DAF-2. Genetic rescue experiments demonstrate that redox-independent functions of TRX-1 specifically in ASJ neurons are needed for the dauer formation constitutive (Daf-c) phenotype of daf-28 mutants. GFP reporters of trx-1 and daf-28 show opposing expression patterns in dauers (i.e. trx-1 is up-regulated and daf-28 is down-regulated), an effect that is not observed in growing L2/L3 larvae. In addition, functional TRX-1 is required for the down-regulation of a GFP reporter of daf-28 during dauer formation, a process that is likely subject to DAF-28-mediated feedback regulation. Our findings demonstrate that TRX-1 modulates DAF-28 signaling by contributing to the down-regulation of daf-28 expression during dauer formation. We propose that TRX-1 acts as a fluctuating neuronal signaling modulator within ASJ neurons to monitor the adjustment of neuropeptide expression, including insulin-like proteins, during dauer formation in response to adverse environmental conditions.

BACKGROUND: Poor medication adherence is a frequent cause of treatment failure but is difficult to diagnose. In this study we have evaluated the impact of measuring adherence to cinacalcet-HCl and phosphate binders in dialysis patients with uncontrolled secondary hyperparathyroidism. METHODS: 7 chronic dialysis patients with iPTH-levels >= 300 pg/ml despite treatment with >= 60 mg cinacalcet-HCl were included. Medication adherence was measured using the "Medication Events Monitoring System" during 3 months, followed by another 3-month period without monitoring. The adherence results were monthly discussed with the patients, as well as strategies to improve them. RESULTS: During monitoring, the percentage of prescribed doses taken was higher for cinacalcet-HCl (87.4%) and sevelamer (86.3%) than for calcium acetate (76.1%), as was the taking adherence (81.9% vs. 57.3% vs. 49.1%) but not the percentage of drug holidays (12.3% vs. 4.5% vs. 3.6%). Mean PO4 levels (from 2.24 +/- 0.6 mmol/l to 1.73 +/- 0.41 mmol/l; p = 0.14) and Ca++ x PO4 product (4.73 +/- 1.43 to 3.41 +/- 1.04 mmol2/l2; p = 0.12) improved and iPTH-level improved significantly from 916 +/- 618 pg/ml to 442 +/- 326 pg/ml (p = 0.04), without any change in medication. However, as drug monitoring was interrupted, all laboratory parameters worsened again. CONCLUSIONS: Assessment of drug adherence helped to document episodes of non-compliance and helped to avoid seemingly necessary dose increases.

També s’analitza l’adquisició d’aquestes construccions en català i en espanyol L2 per part de parlants que tenen el romanès, el portuguès o l’italià com a L1. El treball de recerca se centrarà en l’estudi de l’espanyol i del romanès i a la tesi s’ampliarà l’estudi amb la resta de llengües

El treball és la primera part d’una tesi que tractarà la influència que la llengua materna (L1) pot exercir en l’adquisició de la segona llengua (L2). Concretament, la tesi se centrarà en la influència de les característiques gramaticals del panjabi i del romanès com a L1 en l’adquisició de l’ordre sintàctic del català com a L2. El treball de recerca descriu alguns aspectes de l’ordre sintàctic del català a partir de gramàtiques, de treballs específics sobre el tema, de l’anàlisi d’un corpus oral i del meu propi coneixement de la llengua com a parlant. Concretament s’estudien les oracions principals i les subordinades completives dependents de verbs com dir, suposar o pensar

En aquest treball es descriu un nou mètode per a la síntesi de nanopartícules de platí per mitjà de metallosurfactants preparats amb fosfines ambifíliques. L’objectiu bàsic consisteix en aprofitar la capacitat d’aquests compostos per formar agregats col·loïdals a fi d’afavorir i intentar controlar els processos de formació de nanopartícules metàl·liques. S’han emprat tres fosfines ambifíliques {Ph2P(CH2)nSO3Na; n=2 (L2), n=6 (L6), n=10 (L10)} per tal d’estudiar la influència de la llargada de la cadena hidrocarbonada en el procés de formació de nanopartícules. D’aquests tres lligands, s’han sintetitzat i caracteritzat els compostos L6 i L10 seguint els procediments descrits en estudis anteriors Per a la síntesi i estudis de complexació amb K2PtCl4, s’han fet servir unes condicions de treball que faciliten la formació de nanopartícules de platí. L’anàlisi dels complexos de platí existents en el medi de reacció mitjançant RMN 31P ha demostrat que es formen especies cis-[PtCl2(Ln)] en tots els casos i que l’augment de la temperatura de reacció afavoreix la formació de complexos quelats (P,O). Aquest fenomen és més important en els lligands amb la cadena hidrocarbonada més curta (L2&& L6& L10). S’han dut a terme estudis d’adsorció i d’agregació mitjançant mesures de tensiometria i de Dynamic Ligth Scattering (DLS) per tal de poder determinar les propietats tensioactives dels metallosurfactants i comparar-les amb estudis anteriors. Finalment, per tal d’obtenir nanopartícules de platí, s’ha dut a terme la reducció després de la formació dels metallosurfactants fent servir borhidrur de sodi com agent reductor. La caracterització de les nanopartícules s’ha centrat en l’ús de tècniques de microscòpia electrònica.

Abstract Study objective: The arousal state changes during spinal anesthesia. It is not clear if BIS and others devices could monitor the induced neuroaxial blockade sedation. Our objective was evaluate BIS and entropy values when spinal anesthesia is done. Design: We developed a prospective study. Patients: 40 patients were included in this study, ASA I-III, over 60 years old, undergoing spinal anesthesia, without premedication scheduled for orthopedics procedures. Intervention: Spinal anesthesia was performed with the unseated volunteer in the lateral decubitus position with a 25-gauge Whitacre needle at L2-L3 space, andanesthesia was done with 12 mg of 0.5% hyperbaric bupivacaine. Patients were positioned supine for 5 min after spinal anesthesia. Measurements: Observer’s Assessment of Alertness/Sedation OAA/S, response (RE) and state entropy (SE) and BIS, and standard hemodynamic measures. Main results: Statistical analysis were performed by Wilcoxon test or ANOVA, p<0.05 was considered statistically significant.RE and BIS showed a better correlation with the OAA/S scale values (Pk 0.81 and 0.82) than SE (Pk 0.69). The OAA/S, RE and SE showed significative differences from basal values after 30 min of neuroaxial anesthesia (ANOVA p<0.05). BIS showed differences after 40 min (ANOVA p<0.05). There were no differences between BIS and RE values along the study (ANOVA p>0.05). Conclusions: The spinal anesthesia decreased the cortical activity and these were founded by OAA/S scale and depth anesthetics monitors. OAA/S was a more sensitive value of this induced sedation. BIS and RE showed a better correlation with OAA/S scale than SE.

Trois constats majeurs sont à l'origine de notre étude. Premièrement, les processus d'acquisition mobilisés par l'enseignement bilingue ont fait l'objet de très peu de recherches, alors que les résultats issus de ce type d'enseignement ont été largement explorés et ont globalement reçu une évaluation positive. Deuxièmement, l'apprentissage de la langue seconde (L2) et le bénéfice qu'il peut tirer d'un enseignement bilingue reste l'objet privilégié pour la plupart des études, alors que les particularités et les enjeux de l'apprentissage des disciplines dites "non linguistiques" (DNL) (telles l'histoire, la physique ou les mathématiques) restent largement inexplorées. Troisièmement, l'intégration a été souvent étudiée au niveau du curriculum scolaire pour dégager les interrelations entre enseignement de la L2 et enseignement des DNL, mais l'intégration demandait encore à être décrit de manière détaillée en tant qu'incorporation de l'apprentissage des savoirs disciplinaires et linguistiques et en tant que travail intégré des savoirs linguistiques et disciplinaires.Notre analyse s'inscrit alors dans une triple perspective prenant en compte ces trois axes de recherche : une perspective interactionniste et située de l'apprentissage des langues permettant d'envisager les processus d'acquisition mobilisés par l'enseignement bilingue in situ ; une perspective bi-plurilingue qui invite à étudier les spécificités de l'enseignement bilingue et s'affilie à une didactique du plurilinguisme valorisant un travail bilingue et intégré en classe ; une perspective des DNL permettant de considérer les enjeux de l'enseignement bilingue pour l'apprentissage des DNL, et non seulement pour l'apprentissage de la L2, et de considérer le travail intégré des savoirs linguistiques et disciplinaires.Ainsi, notre étude vise la description des pratiques effectives en classe bilingue s'appuyant sur l'analyse d'un important corpus d'interactions enregistrées dans diverses classes du secondaire II, orientée vers une méthodologie à caractère ethnographique et basée sur une démarche empirique et descriptive, ainsi que sur les outils de l'analyse conversationnelle appliquée à l'apprentissage des L2.Dans ce contexte, notre travail repose sur l'hypothèse que l'enseignement bilingue profite non seulement à l'apprentissage des savoirs linguistiques, mais également à celui des savoirs disciplinaires, lorsqu'il se base sur un travail intégré de la dimension linguistique et disciplinaire de cet apprentissage, et qu'un travail dans les deux langues en présence contribue à une intégration forte des savoirs linguistiques et disciplinaires. Il vise alors l'examen de l'articulation entre travail disciplinaire et travail linguistique dans différentes DNL et activités, ainsi que l'élaboration bilingue des concepts disciplinaires.D'abord, nos analyses montrent deux manières d'aborder l'élaboration des concepts disciplinaires dans les classes bilingues observées, le mode unilingue et le mode bilingue, et mettent en lumière l'apport du mode bilingue ou travail bilingue à l'élaboration des savoirs disciplinaires. Puis, la description détaillée de séquences-types permet de dégager les fonctionnements spécifiques à un enseignement bilingue et intégré, ainsi que les degrés et les procédés d'intégration des savoirs linguistiques et disciplinaires dans l'apprentissage en classe bilingue.En résumé, nos observations montrent que le bénéfice de l'enseignement bilingue réside dans l'attention particulière portée aux enjeux linguistiques des DNL et dans le travail linguistique, lorsqu'il est orienté vers un but disciplinaire. Aussi, cette orientation s'affirme dans la dynamique entre travail sur la dimension disciplinaire et travail sur la dimension linguistique.
