Three experimental groups from three different fishing villages were selected and administered with three extension treatments on two messages, namely, production of fish wafers and fish pickles. There was a significant knowledge gain in the subjects taught through different extension methods. It was observed that lecture aided with slides induced maximum knowledge followed by lecture aided with charts and lecture alone. Among all, the young and highly educated women gained maximum knowledge.

Breather stability and longevity in thermally relaxing nonlinear arrays is investigated under the scrutiny of the analysis and tools employed for time series and state reconstruction of a dynamical system. We briefly review the methods used in the analysis and characterize a breather in terms of the results obtained with such methods. Our present work focuses on spontaneously appearing breathers in thermal Fermi-Pasta-Ulam arrays but we believe that the conclusions are general enough to describe many other related situations; the particular case described in detail is presented as another example of systems where three incommensurable frequencies dominate their chaotic dynamics (reminiscent of the Ruelle-Takens scenario for the appearance of chaotic behavior in nonlinear systems). This characterization may also be of great help for the discovery of breathers in experimental situations where the temporal evolution of a local variable (like the site energy) is the only available/measured data. © 2005 American Institute of Physics.

A workshop on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) prediction of shock boundary-layer interactions (SBLIs) was held at the 48th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting. As part of the workshop, numerous CFD analysts submitted solutions to four experimentally measured SBLIs. This paper describes the assessment of the CFD predictions. The assessment includes an uncertainty analysis of the experimental data, the definition of an error metric, and the application of that metric to the CFD solutions. The CFD solutions provided very similar levels of error and, in general, it was difficult to discern clear trends in the data. For the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) methods, the choice of turbulence model appeared to be the largest factor in solution accuracy. Scale-resolving methods, such as large-eddy simulation (LES), hybrid RANS/LES, and direct numerical simulation, produced error levels similar to RANS methods but provided superior predictions of normal stresses. In order to better understand the stratified combustion, the propagation of flame through stratified mixture field in laminar and turbulent flow conditions has been studied by using combined PIV/PLIF techniques. A great emphasis was placed on developing methods to improve the accuracy of local measurements of flame propagation. In particular, a new PIV approach has been developed to measure the local fresh gas velocity near preheat zone of flame front. To improve the resolution of measurement, the shape of interrogation window has been continuously modified based on the local flame topology and gas expansion effect. Statistical analysis of conditioned local measurements by the local equivalence ratio of flames allows the characterization of the properties of flame propagation subjected to the mixture stratification in laminar and turbulent flows, especially the highlight of the memory effect.

The pressure oscillation within combustion chambers of aeroengines and industrial gas turbines is a major technical challenge to the development of high-performance and low-emission propulsion systems. In this paper, an approach integrating computational fluid dynamics and one-dimensional linear stability analysis is developed to predict the modes of oscillation in a combustor and their frequencies and growth rates. Linear acoustic theory was used to describe the acoustic waves propagating upstream and downstream of the combustion zone, which enables the computational fluid dynamics calculation to be efficiently concentrated on the combustion zone. A combustion oscillation was found to occur with its predicted frequency in agreement with experimental measurements. Furthermore, results from the computational fluid dynamics calculation provide the flame transfer function to describe unsteady heat release rate. Departures from ideal one-dimensional flows are described by shape factors. Combined with this information, low-order models can work out the possible oscillation modes and their initial growth rates. The approach developed here can be used in more general situations for the analysis of combustion oscillations. Copyright © 2012 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. Surface texturing has a great potential to improve tribological performance. First, possible texturing methods were identified and classified according to their physical principles. In sequence, some alternative texturing methods are presented. Some of them are already currently used either in industry or in laboratory, and innovations or simplifications are described for them. Others are innovative techniques. Some were explored only tentatively, where basic ideas and simple experimental investigations were developed to check their validity. Others were explored in more detail, so that their practical applicability could be identified. The first texturing method was photochemical texturing using a simple and cheap apparatus. Masking with inkjet printing before chemical etching was also successful to texture metallic samples. A new method involving electrochemical texturing, without the need to previously mask the samples to be textured have been studied in terms of voltage, current, mechanical configuration of the apparatus and electrolyte flushing. Another method aims to generate randomly distributed circular pockets on steel surfaces and involves dispersion of small acid droplets in oil. The final method involves the selective formation of hard areas on a steel surface by locallised diffusion, which should then develop into a texture during wear.

Several experimental techniques have been used in order to characterize the properties of multifilamentary Bi-2223 / Ag tapes. Pristine samples were investigated by electrical resistivity, current-voltage characteristics and DC magnetic moment measurements. Much emphasis is placed on comparing transport (direct) and magnetic (indirect) methods for determining the critical current density as well as the irreversibility line and resolving usual lacks of consistency due to the difference in measurement techniques and data analysis. The effect of an applied magnetic field, with various strengths and directions, is also studied and discussed. Next, the same combination of experiments was performed on bent tapes in order to bring out relevant information regarding the intergranular coupling. A modified Brandt model taking into account different types of defects within the superconducting filaments is proposed to reconciliate magnetic and transport data.

DNA microarrays provide a huge amount of data and require therefore dimensionality reduction methods to extract meaningful biological information. Independent Component Analysis (ICA) was proposed by several authors as an interesting means. Unfortunately, experimental data are usually of poor quality- because of noise, outliers and lack of samples. Robustness to these hurdles will thus be a key feature for an ICA algorithm. This paper identifies a robust contrast function and proposes a new ICA algorithm. © 2007 IEEE.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) method 5136 is widely used in industry and academia to determine the sound power radiated into a duct by fans and other flow devices. The method involves placing the device at the center of a long cylindrical duct with anechoic terminations at each end to eliminate reflections. A single off-axis microphone is used on the inlet and outlet sides that can theoretically capture the plane-wave mode amplitudes but this does not provide enough information to fully account for higher-order modes. In this study, the "two-port" source model is formulated to include higher-order modes and applied for the first three modes. This requires six independent surface pressure measurements on each side or "port." The resulting experimental set-up is much shorter than the ISO rig and does not require anechoic terminations. An array of six external loudspeaker sources is used to characterize the passive part of the two-port model and the set-up provides a framework to account for transmission of higher-order modes through a fan. The relative importance of the higher-order modes has been considered and their effect on inaccuracies when using the ISO method to find source sound power has been analyzed.

Previous studies of transonic shock control bumps have often been either numerical or experimental. Comparisons between the two have been hampered by the limitations of either approach. The present work aims to bridge the gap between computational fluid dynamics and experiment by planning a joint approach from the outset. This enables high-quality validation data to be produced and ensures that the conclusions of either aspect of the study are directly relevant to the application. Experiments conducted with bumps mounted on the floor of a blowdown tunnel were modified to include an additional postshock adverse pressure gradient through the use of a diffuser as well as introducing boundary-layer suction ahead of the test section to enable the in-flow boundary layer to be manipulated. This has the advantage of being an inexpensive and highly repeatable method. Computations were performed on a standard airfoil model, with the flight conditions as free parameters. The experimental and computational setups were then tuned to produce baseline conditions that agree well, enabling confidence that the experimental conclusions are relevant. The methods are then applied to two different shock control bumps: a smoothly contoured bump, representative of previous studies, and a novel extended geometry featuring a continuously widening tail, which spans the wind-tunnel width at the rear of the bump. Comparison between the computational and experimental results for the contour bump showed good agreement both with respect to the flow structures and quantitative analysis of the boundary-layer parameters. It was seen that combining the experimental and numerical data could provide valuable insight into the flow physics, which would not generally be possible for a one-sided approach. The experiments and computational fluid dynamics were also seen to agree well for the extended bump geometry, providing evidence that, even though thebumpinteracts directly with the wind-tunnel walls, it was still possible to observe the key flow physics. The joint approach is thus suitable even for wider bump geometries. Copyright © 2013 by S. P. Colliss, H. Babinsky, K. Nubler, and T. Lutz. Underground structures constitute crucial components of the transportation networks. Considering their significance for modern societies, their proper seismic design is of great importance. However, this design may become very tricky, accounting of the lack of knowledge regarding their seismic behavior. Several issues that are significantly affecting this behavior (i.e. earth pressures on the structure, seismic shear stresses around the structure, complex deformation modes for rectangular structures during shaking etc.) are still open. The problem is wider for the non-circular (i.e. rectangular) structures, were the soilstructure interaction effects are expected to be maximized. The paper presents representative experimental results from a test case of a series of dynamic centrifuge tests that were performed on rectangular tunnels embedded in dry sand. The tests were carried out at the centrifuge facility of the University of Cambridge, within the Transnational Task of the SERIES EU research program. The presented test case is also numerically simulated and studied. Preliminary full dynamic time history analyses of the coupled soil-tunnel system are performed, using ABAQUS. Soil non-linearity and soil-structure interaction are modeled, following relevant specifications for underground structures and tunnels. Numerical predictions are compared to experimental results and discussed. Based on this comprehensive experimental and numerical study, the seismic behavior of rectangular embedded structures is better understood and modeled, consisting an important step in the development of appropriate specifications for the seismic design of rectangular shallow tunnels.

Based on the conventional through-short-match (TSM) method, an improved TSM method has been proposed in this Letter. This method gives an analytical solution and has almost all the advantages of conventional TSM methods. For example, it has no phase uncertainty and no bandwidth limitation. The experimental results show that the accuracy can be significantly improved with this method. The proposed theory can be applied to the through-open-match (TOM) method. (C) 2002 Wiley Periodicals. The guide mode whose frequency locates in the band edge in photonic crystal single line defect waveguide has very low group velocity. So the confinement and gain of electromagnetic field in the band edge are strongly enhanced. Photonic crystal waveguide laser is fabricated and the slow light phenomenon is investigated. The laser is pumped by pulsed pumping light at 980nm whose duty ratio is 0.05%. The active layer in photonic crystal slab is InGaAsP multiple quantum well. Light is transimited by a photonic crystal chirp waveguide in one facet of the laser. Then the output light is coupled to a fiber and the character of laser is analysis by an optical spectrometer. It is found that single mode and multimode happens with different power of pumping light. Meanwhile the plane wave expansion and finite-difference time-domain methods are used to simulate the phenomenon of slow light. And the result of the experiment is compared with the theory which proves the slow light results in lasing oscillation.

The technology of "explosion in fractures" is one of new synthetic engineering methods used in low permeability reservoirs. The most important problem arose from the technology is to assess the deflagration propagation capability of milky explosives in rock fractures. In order to investigate detailed this problem in the laboratory, an experimental setup was designed and developed in which different conditions can be simulated. The experimental setup mainly includes two parts. One is the experimental part and the other is the measurement part. In the experimental setup, the narrow slots with different width can be simulated; meanwhile, different initial pressures and initial temperatures can be loaded on the explosives inside the narrow slots. The initial pressure range is from 0-60 MPa, and the initial temperatures range is from room temperature to 100 V. The temperature and the velocity of deflagration wave can be measured; meanwhile the corresponding pressure in the narrow slot is also measured. In the end, some typical measurement results are briefly presented and discussed.
