ABSTRACT This work is a contribution to photovoltaic (PV) systems with distributed maximum power point tracking (DMPPT), a system topology characterized by performing the MPPT at module level, instead of the more traditional topologies which perform MPPT for a larger number of modules. The two DMPPT technologies available at the moment are known as microinverters and power optimizers, also known as module level power electronics (MLPE), and they provide certain advantages over central MPPT systems like: higher energy production in mismatch situations, monitoring of each individual module, system design flexibility, higher system safety, etc. Although DMPPT is not limited to urban environments, it has been emphasized in the title as it is their natural market, since in large ground-mounted PV plants the extra cost is difficult to justify. Since 2010 MLPE have increased their market share steadily and continuing to grow steadily. However, there still lacks a profound understanding of how they work, especially in the case of power optimizers, the achievable energy gains with their use and the possibilities in failure diagnosis. The main objective of this thesis is to provide a complete understanding of DMPPT technologies: how they function, their limitations and their advantages. A series of equations used to model PV arrays with power optimizers have been derived and used to point out limitations in solving certain mismatch situation. Because one of the most emphasized benefits of DMPPT is their ability to mitigate shading losses, an extensive study on the effects of shadows on PV systems is presented; both on the I-V curve and on MPPT algorithms. Experimental tests have been performed on the MPPT algorithms of central inverters and MLPE, highlighting their inefficiency in I-V curves with local maxima. An analysis of the possible mitigation of hot-spots with DMPPT is discussed and experimentally verified. And a theoretical analysis of the possible power and energy gains is presented as well as experiments in real PV systems. A short economic analysis of the benefits of DMPPT has also been performed. In order to aide in the previous task, a program which simulates I-V curves under shaded conditions has been developed and experimentally verified. This same program has been used to develop a software tool especially designed for PV systems affected by shading, which estimates the losses due to shading and the energy gains obtained with DMPPT. Finally, a set of algorithms for diagnosing system faults in PV systems with DMPPT has been developed and experimentally verified. The tool can diagnose the following failures: fixed object shading (with distance estimation), localized dirt, generalized dirt, possible hot-spots, module degradation and excessive losses in DC cables. In addition, it alerts the user of the power losses produced by each failure and classifies the failures by their severity and it does not require the use of irradiance or temperature sensors.

Short-term variability in the power generated by large grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) plants can negatively affect power quality and the network reliability. New grid-codes require combining the PV generator with some form of energy storage technology in order to reduce short-term PV power fluctuation. This paper proposes an effective method in order to calculate, for any PV plant size and maximum allowable ramp-rate, the maximum power and the minimum energy storage requirements alike. The general validity of this method is corroborated with extensive simulation exercises performed with real 5-s one year data of 500 kW inverters at the 38.5 MW Amaraleja (Portugal) PV plant and two other PV plants located in Navarra (Spain), at a distance of more than 660 km from Amaraleja.

ABSTRACT. The aim of the characterization of concentrator photovoltaic modules (CPV) is to provide the electrical specifications to know the energy efficiency at operating conditions. This characterization is achieved through IV curves measures, the same way that they are obtained to characterize conventional silicon modules. The objective of this project is the optimization and improvement of a measurement and characterization system for CPV modules. A software has been developed in LabVIEW for the operation of the measurement system and data acquisition of the IV curves of the modules. At first, an already deployed application was taken as the basis and its operation was analyzed in order to optimize and extend to introduce new features. The more relevant update seeks to prevent the situation in which the module is dissipating all the energy between measurements. This has been achieved by introducing an electronic load into the measuring system. This load maintains the module biased at its maximum power point between measurement periods. This work describes the devices that take part in the measurement system, as well as the software program developed. In addition, a user manual is included for an easy handling of the program.

The performance of tandem stacks of Group III?V multijunction solar cells continues to improve rapidly, both through improved performance of the individual cells in the stack and throughi ncrease in the number of stacked cells. As the radiative efficiency of these individual cells increases, radiative coupling between the stacked cells becomes an increasingly important factor not only in cell design, but also in accurate efficiency measurement and in determining performance of cells and systems under varying spectral conditions in the field. Past modeling has concentrated on electroluminescent coupling between the cells, although photoluminescent coupling is shown to be important for cells operating near their maximum power point voltage or below or when junction defect recombination is significant. Extension of earlier models i sproposed to allow this non-negligible component of luminescent coupling to be included. Therefined model is validated by measurement of the closely related external emission from both single and double junction cells.

The coupling of sandy beach aquifers with the swash zone in the vicinity of the water table exit point is investigated through simultaneous measurements of the instantaneous shoreline (swash front) location, pore pressures and the water table exit point. The field observations reveal new insights into swash-aquifer coupling not previously gleaned from measurements of pore pressure only. In particular, for the case where the exit point is seaward of the observation point, the pore pressure response is correlated with the distance between the exit point and the shoreline in that when the distance is large the rate of pressure drop is fast and when the distance is small the rate decreases. The observations expose limitations in a simple model describing exit point dynamics which is based only on the force balance on a particle of water at the sand surface and neglects subsurface pressures. A new modified form of the model is shown to significantly improve the model-data comparison through a parameterization of the effects of capillarity into the aquifer storage coefficient. The model enables sufficiently accurate predictions of the exit point to determine when the swash uprush propagates over a saturated or a partially saturated sand surface, potentially an important factor in the morphological evolution of the beach face. Observations of the shoreward propagation of the swash-induced pore pressure waves ahead of the runup limit shows that the magnitude of the pressure fluctuation decays exponentially and that there is a linear increase in time lags, behavior similar to that of tidally induced water table waves. The location of the exit point and the intermittency of wave runup events is also shown to be significant in terms of the shore-normal energy distribution. Seaward of the mean exit point location, peak energies are small because of the saturated sand surface within the seepage face acting as a "rigid lid'' and limiting pressure fluctuations. Landward of the mean exit point the peak energies grow before decreasing landward of the maximum shoreline position.

This paper looks at potential distribution network stability problems under the Smart Grid scenario. This is to consider distributed energy resources (DERs) e.g. renewable power generations and intelligent loads with power-electronic controlled converters. The background of this topic is introduced and potential problems are defined from conventional power system stability and power electronic system stability theories. Challenges are identified with possible solutions from steady-state limits, small-signal, and large-signal stability indexes and criteria. Parallel computation techniques might be included for simulation or simplification approaches are required for a largescale distribution network analysis.

The utilization of solar energy by photovoltaic (PV) systems have received much research and development (R&D) attention across the globe. In the past decades, a large number of PV array have been installed. Since the installed PV arrays often operate in harsh environments, non-uniform aging can occur and impact adversely on the performance of PV systems, especially in the middle and late periods of their service life. Due to the high cost of replacing aged PV modules by new modules, it is appealing to improve energy efficiency of aged PV systems. For this purpose, this paper presents a PV module reconfiguration strategy to achieve the maximum power generation from non-uniformly aged PV arrays without significant investment. The proposed reconfiguration strategy is based on the cell-unit structure of PV modules, the operating voltage limit of gird-connected converter, and the resulted bucket-effect of the maximum short circuit current. The objectives are to analyze all the potential reorganization options of the PV modules, find the maximum power point and express it in a proposition. This proposition is further developed into a novel implementable algorithm to calculate the maximum power generation and the corresponding reconfiguration of the PV modules. The immediate benefits from this reconfiguration are the increased total power output and maximum power point voltage information for global maximum power point tracking (MPPT). A PV array simulation model is used to illustrate the proposed method under three different cases. Furthermore, an experimental rig is built to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The proposed method will open an effective approach for condition-based maintenance of emerging aging PV arrays.

Photovoltaic (PV) stations have been widely built in the world to utilize solar energy directly. In order to reduce the capital and operational costs, early fault diagnosis is playing an increasingly important role by enabling the long effective operation of PV arrays. This paper analyzes the terminal characteristics of faulty PV strings and arrays, and it develops a PV array fault diagnosis technique. The terminal current-voltage curve of a faulty PV array is divided into two sections, i.e., high-voltage and low-voltage fault diagnosis sections. The corresponding working points of healthy string modules and of healthy and faulty modules in an unhealthy string are then analyzed for each section. By probing into different working points, a faulty PV module can be located. The fault information is of critical importance for the maximum power point tracking and the array dynamical reconfiguration. Furthermore, the string current sensors can be eliminated, and the number of voltage sensors can be reduced by optimizing voltage sensor locations. Typical fault scenarios including monostring, multistring, and a partial shadow for a 1.6-kW 3 $times$ 3 PV array are presented and experimentally tested to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed fault diagnosis method.

Renewable or sustainable energy (SE) sources have attracted the attention of many countries because the power generated is environmentally friendly, and the sources are not subject to the instability of price and availability. This dissertation presents new trends in the DC-AC converters (inverters) used in renewable energy sources, particularly for photovoltaic (PV) energy systems. A review of the existing technologies is performed for both single-phase and three-phase systems, and the pros and cons of the best candidates are investigated. In many modern energy conversion systems, a DC voltage, which is provided from a SE source or energy storage device, must be boosted and converted to an AC voltage with a fixed amplitude and frequency. A novel switching pattern based on the concept of the conventional space-vector pulse-width-modulated (SVPWM) technique is developed for single-stage, boost-inverters using the topology of current source inverters (CSI). The six main switching states, and two zeros, with three switches conducting at any given instant in conventional SVPWM techniques are modified herein into three charging states and six discharging states with only two switches conducting at any given instant. The charging states are necessary in order to boost the DC input voltage. It is demonstrated that the CSI topology in conjunction with the developed switching pattern is capable of providing the required residential AC voltage from a low DC voltage of one PV panel at its rated power for both linear and nonlinear loads. In a micro-grid, the active and reactive power control and consequently voltage regulation is one of the main requirements. Therefore, the capability of the single-stage boost-inverter in controlling the active power and providing the reactive power is investigated. It is demonstrated that the injected active and reactive power can be independently controlled through two modulation indices introduced in the proposed switching algorithm. The system is capable of injecting a desirable level of reactive power, while the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) dictates the desirable active power. The developed switching pattern is experimentally verified through a laboratory scaled three-phase 200W boost-inverter for both grid-connected and stand-alone cases and the results are presented.
