Select Document: Sir George Radcliffe’s “Original of Government” (1639) and Absolutist Political Theory in Stuart Ireland

A seventeenth-century manuscript miscellany, which once belonged to Archbishop James Ussher of Armagh, contains a short treatise on the origins of government by Sir George Radcliffe. Radcliffe was legal assistant to Sir Thomas Wentworth, lord deputy of Ireland (from January 1640 earl of Strafford and lord lieutenant). The treatise insisted on the divine origin of all human political power and implied that the best form of government was absolute monarchy, in which the monarch was free of all human law and subject to divine restraint alone. It will be suggested below that the composition of this treatise can be dated to the summer of 1639. This introduction will offer an outline of Radcliffe’s education and political career, explain the genesis of his treatise on government, point out some pertinent aspects of its argument, and finally assess the document’s significance.

Canadian Shredded Wheat Company Fonds

In 1893 Attorney Henry Drushel Perky and William H. Ford invented a machine for the preparation of cereals for food. Perky soon realized that the actual cereal biscuits were more popular than the machines and he opened Shredded Wheat plants in Massachusetts and Niagara Falls, New York. In 1904, the Niagara Falls, Canada plant was opened. These factories also served as tourist attractions. In 1907, one hundred thousand people visited the plants on both sides of the border. In 1928, the company was sold to The National Biscuit Company and the product name changed to Nabisco Shredded Wheat. The name of the plant was changed to Nabisco Foods in 1956 to reflect the variety of foods that were being produced at that time. In 1985, Nabisco was purchased by J.R. Reynolds thus forming RJR Nabisco. In 1994, RJR sold its breakfast cereal business to Kraft Foods and the international licenses to General Mills. As reflexões curriculares de Paulo Freire

Este artigo pretende apreender as relações entre o conhecimento, a aprendizagem e o currículo no interior do pensamento político-pedagógico de Paulo Freire. Para isso, trabalhamos questões norteadoras do seu discurso especialmente desveladoras das reflexões curriculares em torno dos processos do conhecimento, da educação problematizadora, da passagem da ingenuidade à criticidade que marca a conscientização, da formação do educador, dos direitos das camadas populares ao conhecimento, da gestão e da autonomia escolares. Essas reflexões demonstram a vivacidade e a atualidade das contribuições pedagógicas do legado de Freire enquanto contraponto de uma educação cada vez mais estandartizada “de-cima-para-baixo” e hegemônica.

Democratização do Ensino Superior Brasileiro : o caso da Universidade Federal da Paraíba

O artigo discute a problemática da democratização do acesso ao ensino superior no contexto de crise globalizada e da situação de indefinições, particularizando o caso do Brasil. Com base em argumentos analíticos, dados empíricos e no programa brasileiro de Reestruturação e Expansão das Universidades Federais (REUNI), questiona se a recente expansão do ensino superior brasileiro vem conseguindo modificar o cenário de elitização desse ensino, detendo-se no caso específico da Universidade Federal da Paraíba. Considera que as ações voltadas para incluir um maior número de pessoas no ensino superior podem fortalecer tanto os ideais democráticos como os processos de crescimento e desenvolvimento econômico e social do Brasil, possibilitando a construção de novos relatos históricos e transformando a instituição educacional e a sociedade.

Conversas com economistas brasileiros

O objetivo deste trabalho é apontar importantes diferenças nos argumentos e diagnósticos de importantes economistas brasileiros. A evidência muito forte é a de que eles não oferecem respostas unânimes, claras e inequívocas para questões econômicas muito bem definidas. O economista brasileiro é quase sempre um generalista. Seja ocupando um lugar na esfera pública ou privada, seja concentrando-se no ambiente acadêmico, são impelidos a opinar sobre vários assuntos. Neste relatório apresentamos as idéias de Affonso Celso Pastore, André Lara Resende, Antonio Delfim Netto, Celso Monteiro Furtado, Eduardo Giannetti da Fonseca, Luiz Carlos Bresser Pereira, Maria da Conceição Tavares, Mário Henrique Simonsen, Roberto de Oliveira Campos. Procuramos identificar a formação destes economistas e suas visões de desenvolvimento econômico e inflação. Subjacente à leitura das entrevistas exploramos as divergências e os problemas de comunicação nas discussões econômicas. A ênfase foi na variedade e eloquência dos argumentos e o julgamento pessoal.

Gestão ambiental em cadeias produtivas agroindustriais: um estudo em um aglomerado produtivo da caprinovinocultura no Estado do Rio Grande do Norte

This thesis aims to investigate the perception and behavior of goat and sheep rural producers from Central Cabugi Region of Rio Grande do Norte state, in terms of the sector competitiveness, the cooperation mechanisms, information and environmental practices integration in the supply chain, including their customers, and also among the local producers and other institutions that support this agribusiness cluster. The research problem is related to the environmental impacts from goat and sheep breeding. This problem can also be intensified by the organization of producers in a cluster. Then, it is important to examine how the environmental issues are considered by the rural producers and their perception of their suppliers, customers and the institutions that support this activity. The methodology used in this work involved literature review of the topics of supply chain management, green supply chain, clusters development and sustainable livestock. An exploratory survey research was also conducted by personal interviews using questionnaires. Three statistic techniques were used to compile the gathered data: descriptive statistics, cluster analysis, and Chi-square tests. Two clusters were found in this study, however, the entire sample believes the sector of goat and sheep breeding is a medium competitive activity. On the other hand, for the variables of the importance of environmental practices for competitiveness , perception of environmental impacts and environmental benefits from farm vegetation management , the research found 2 distinct groups of individuals when those variables were analyzed together the green supply chain management group of variables in the cluster analysis. Beyond competitiveness perception, no degree of difference was found for the use of insecticides too. The chi-square tests present that producers having at least elementary education, lands bigger 100 hectares and located in the cities of Angicos or Lajes tend to have a higher perception to supply chain management and environmental awareness issues than those with no or incomplete first-level education, producing in lands smaller than 100 hectares and located in the cities of Afonso Bezerra or Pedro Avelino. The chi-square tests also show the amount of milk produced, family s income and associational condition are not related with the variables used in the clusters composition. In this context, this work contributes to planning clusters development strategies and enhancing the production chain sustainability. This Master of Science Thesis can also help to introduce the environmental variable in the project, assessment and monitoring of development policies as well

Quadros em movimento: O uso das fontes iconográficas no filme Os Bandeirantes (1940), de Humberto Mauro

Este artigo discute a utilização das fontes iconográficas enquanto estratégia de autenticação da narrativa cinematográfica através da análise de um dos blocos narrativos do filme Os Bandeirantes (1940), de Humberto Mauro. Tal filme teve a orientação geral de Edgar Roquette-Pinto, diretor presidente do Instituto Nacional de Cinema Educativo (INCE), e a coordenação histórica de Afonso de Taunay, historiador e diretor do Museu Paulista, mais conhecido como Museu do Ipiranga. A estratégia de utilização da iconografia enquanto documento histórico em Os Bandeirantes produzirá um curto-circuito com o trabalho de mise-en-scène de Humberto Mauro, gerando significados diversos daqueles que foram idealizados pelos produtores do filme.
