MISCIBILITY OF POLY(EPICHLOROHYDRIN) WITH POLY(VINYL ACETATE) AND POLY(STYRENE-CO-ACRYLONITRILE)

The phase behaviours of poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) and poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile)s (SAN) with poly(epichlorohydrin) (PECH) were examined using differential scanning calorimetry and an optical method using a hot plate. The PECH/PVAc blends showed LCST behaviour. The observed miscibility is thought to be a result of hydrogen-bonding interactions between the alpha-hydrogen atoms of PECH and the carbonyl groups of PVAc. Two SAN copolymers with an acrylonitrile (AN) content of 18 wt% (SAN18) and 25 wt% (SAN25), respectively, were also found to exhibit miscibility with PECH. No phase separation occurred by heating up to about 280-degrees-C, and the individual blend has a single, composition-dependent glass transition temperature. The formation of miscible PECH/SAN blends can be considered as a result of the intramolecular repulsion between styrene and AN units in SAN.

Genome-wide association with bone mass and geometry in the Framingham Heart Study

BACKGROUND:Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mass and compromised bone structure, heritable traits that contribute to fracture risk. There have been no genome-wide association and linkage studies for these traits using high-density genotyping platforms.METHODS:We used the Affymetrix 100K SNP GeneChip marker set in the Framingham Heart Study (FHS) to examine genetic associations with ten primary quantitative traits: bone mineral density (BMD), calcaneal ultrasound, and geometric indices of the hip. To test associations with multivariable-adjusted residual trait values, we used additive generalized estimating equation (GEE) and family-based association tests (FBAT) models within each sex as well as sexes combined. We evaluated 70,987 autosomal SNPs with genotypic call rates [greater than or equal to]80%, HWE p [greater than or equal to] 0.001, and MAF [greater than or equal to]10% in up to 1141 phenotyped individuals (495 men and 646 women, mean age 62.5 yrs). Variance component linkage analysis was performed using 11,200 markers.RESULTS:Heritability estimates for all bone phenotypes were 30-66%. LOD scores [greater than or equal to]3.0 were found on chromosomes 15 (1.5 LOD confidence interval: 51,336,679-58,934,236 bp) and 22 (35,890,398-48,603,847 bp) for femoral shaft section modulus. The ten primary phenotypes had 12 associations with 100K SNPs in GEE models at p < 0.000001 and 2 associations in FBAT models at p < 0.000001. The 25 most significant p-values for GEE and FBAT were all less than 3.5 x 10-6 and 2.5 x 10-5, respectively. Of the 40 top SNPs with the greatest numbers of significantly associated BMD traits (including femoral neck, trochanter, and lumbar spine), one half to two-thirds were in or near genes that have not previously been studied for osteoporosis. Notably, pleiotropic associations between BMD and bone geometric traits were uncommon. Evidence for association (FBAT or GEE p < 0.05) was observed for several SNPs in candidate genes for osteoporosis, such as rs1801133 in MTHFR; rs1884052 and rs3778099 in ESR1; rs4988300 in LRP5; rs2189480 in VDR; rs2075555 in COLIA1; rs10519297 and rs2008691 in CYP19, as well as SNPs in PPARG (rs10510418 and rs2938392) and ANKH (rs2454873 and rs379016). Dutch influence in the urban landscape of Cork City pre-1800: Fact or myth?

The early years of the eighteenth century Irish port town, Cork saw an expansion of its city limits, an era of reconstruction both within and beyond the walls of its Medieval townscape and a reclamation of its marshlands to the east and west. New people, new ideas and the beginnings of new wealth infused the post Elizabethan character of the recently siege battered city. It also brought a desire for something different, something new, an opportunity to redefine the ambience and visual perception of the urban landscape and thereby make a statement about its intended cultural and social orientations. It brought an opportunity to re-imagine and model a new, continental style of place and surrounding environment.

En primer lugar, para saber de que y desde dónde hablamos al referirnos a la “resolución de problemas" como un enfoque de la matemática, plantearemos una serie de premisas sobre la concepción de esta disciplina y de su enseñanza/aprendizaje.

Numerical modelling and validation of Marangoni and surface tension phenomena using the finite volume method

Surface tension induced flow is implemented into a numerical modelling framework and validated for a number of test cases. Finite volume unstructured mesh techniques are used to discretize the mass, momentum and energy conservation equations in three dimensions. An explicit approach is used to include the effect of surface tension forces on the flow profile and final shape of a liquid domain. Validation of this approach is made against both analytical and experimental data. Finally, the method is used to model the wetting balance test for solder alloy material, where model predictions are used to gain a greater insight into this process. The implementation of an aeronautical CFD flow code onto distributed memory parallel systems

The parallelization of an industrially important in-house computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code for calculating the airflow over complex aircraft configurations using the Euler or Navier–Stokes equations is presented. The code discussed is the flow solver module of the SAUNA CFD suite. This suite uses a novel grid system that may include block-structured hexahedral or pyramidal grids, unstructured tetrahedral grids or a hybrid combination of both. To assist in the rapid convergence to a solution, a number of convergence acceleration techniques are employed including implicit residual smoothing and a multigrid full approximation storage scheme (FAS). Key features of the parallelization approach are the use of domain decomposition and encapsulated message passing to enable the execution in parallel using a single programme multiple data (SPMD) paradigm. In the case where a hybrid grid is used, a unified grid partitioning scheme is employed to define the decomposition of the mesh. The parallel code has been tested using both structured and hybrid grids on a number of different distributed memory parallel systems and is now routinely used to perform industrial scale aeronautical simulations. Ahora no es suficiente con competir para obtener un mayor beneficio, también es necesario innovar bajo el paraguas de la sostenibilidad y tener presente la realidad social en la que se encuentra la empresa. Las personas ocupan un papel aun más protagonista en las organizaciones empresariales de sociedades avanzadas. La pedagogía no debe ni puede permanecer al margen. La formación, la capacitación, la cualificación, la capacidad de innovación y la vinculación de la persona con la organización son las claves para el desarrollo, crecimiento y supervivencia de las organizaciones empresariales. La formación debe colaborar desde una perspectiva pedagógica. No debe limitar su actuación a ámbitos externos de la empresa (antes de la incorporación de la persona, o cuando la persona no está en el mercado laboral). Debe actuar desde dentro de las organizaciones empresariales.

Preferential CO oxidation over a copper-cerium oxide catalyst in a microchannel reactor

The activity of a 5-wt% Cu/CeO2-x catalyst during preferential CO oxidation in hydrogen-rich gas mixtures was studied in a microchannel reactor. The CO concentration dropped from 1 vol.% to 10 ppm at a selectivity of 60%, at a temperature of 190 degrees C, and a weight hour space velocity (WHSV) of 55,000 cm(3) g(-1) h(-1). Both the CO concentration and the temperature increased when the WHSV was increased from 50,000 to 500,000 cm(3) g(-1) h(-1). An increase of the O-2 concentration from a 1.2 to 3 fold excess reduced the CO concentration to 10 ppm in a broad temperature interval of 50 degrees C at WHSVs up to 275,000 cm(3) g(-1) h(-1). The preferential CO oxidation could be carried out at higher flow rates and at higher selectivities in the microchannel reactor compared to a fixed-bed flow reactor. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V.
