Purpose: This study used 12 photoelastics models with different height and thickness to evaluate if the axial loading of 100N on implants changes the morphology of the photoelastic reflection. Methods: For the photoelastic analysis, the models were placed in a reflection polariscope for observation of the isochromatic fringes patterns. The formation of these fringes resulted from an axial load of 100N applied to the midpoint of the healing abutment attached to the implant with 10.0mm x 3.75mm (Conexão, Sistemas de Próteses, Brazil). The tension in each photoelastic model was monitored, photographed and observed using the software Phothoshop 7.0. For qualitative analysis, the area under the implant apex was measured including the green band of the second order fringe of each model using the software Image Tool. After comparison of the areas, the performance generated by each specimen was defined regarding the axial loading. Results: There were alterations in area with different height and thickness of the photoelastic models. It was observed that the group III (30mm in height) presented the smallest area. Conclusion: There was variation in the size of the areas analyzed for different height and thickness of the models and the morphology of the replica may directly influence the result in researches with photoelastic models.

The present experiment investigated whether pigeons can show associative symmetry on a two-alternative matching to-sample procedure The procedure consisted of a within subject sequence of training and testing with reinforcement and It provided (a) exemplars of symmetrical responding and (b) all prerequisite discriminations among test samples and comparisons After pigeons had learned two arbitrary matching tasks (A B and C D) they were given a reinforced symmetry test for half of the baseline relations (B1-A1 and D1-C1) To control for the effects of reinforcement during testing two novel nonsymmetrical responses were concurrently reinforced using the other baseline stimuli (D2-A2 and B2-C2) Pigeons matched at chance on both types of relations thus indicating no evidence for symmetry These symmetrical and nonsymmetrical relations were then directly trained in order to provide exemplars of symmetry and all prerequisite discriminations for a second test The symmetrical test relations were now B2-A2 and D2-C2 and the nonsymmetrical relations were D1-A1 and B1-C1 On this test 1 pigeon showed clear evidence of symmetry 2 pigeons showed weak evidence and 1 pigeon showed no evidence The previous training of all prerequisite discriminations among stimuli and the within subject control for testing with reinforcement seem to have set favorable conditions for the emergence of symmetry in nonhumans However the variability across subjects shows that methodological variables still remain to be controlled

We present a family of networks whose local interconnection topologies are generated by the root vectors of a semi-simple complex Lie algebra. Cartan classification theorem of those algebras ensures those families of interconnection topologies to be exhaustive. The global arrangement of the network is defined in terms of integer or half-integer weight lattices. The mesh or torus topologies that network millions of processing cores, such as those in the IBM BlueGene series, are the simplest member of that category. The symmetries of the root systems of an algebra, manifested by their Weyl group, lends great convenience for the design and analysis of hardware architecture, algorithms and programs.

Field experiments have demonstrated that piles driven into sand can respond to axial cyclic loading in Stable, Unstable or Meta-Stable ways, depending on the combinations of mean and cyclic loads and the number of cycles. An understanding of the three styles of responses is provided by experiments involving a highly instrumented model displacement pile and an array of soil stress sensors installed in fine sand in a pressurised calibration chamber. The different patterns of effective stress developing on and around the shaft are reported, along with the results of static load tests that track the effects on shaft capacity. The interpretation links these observations to the sand's stress strain behaviour. The interface-shear characteristics, the kinematic yielding, the local densification, the growth of a fractured interface-shear zone and the restrained dilatancy at the pile soil interface are all found to be important. The model tests are shown to be compatible with the full-scale behaviour and to provide key information for improving the modelling and the design rules. (C) 2012 The Japanese Geotechnical Society. By computing the two-loop effective potential of the D=3 N=1 supersymmetric Chern-Simons model minimally coupled to a massless self-interacting matter superfield, it is shown that supersymmetry is preserved, while the internal U(1) and the scale symmetries are broken at two-loop order, dynamically generating masses both for the gauge superfield and for the real component of the matter superfield.

The known paddlewheel, tetrakis(acetato)chloridodiruthenium(II,III), offers a versatile synthetic route to a novel class of antitumor diruthenium(II,III) metallo drugs, where the equatorial ligands are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory carboxylates. This complex was studied here as a soluble starting prototype model for antitumor analogues to elucidate the reactivity of the [Ru-2(CH3COO)(4)](+) framework. Thermodynamic studies on equilibration reactions for axial substitution of water by chloride and kinetic studies on reactions of the diaqua complexes with the amino acids glycine, cysteine, histidine, and tryptophan were performed. The standard thermodynamic reaction parameters Delta H degrees, Delta S degrees, and Delta V degrees were determined and showed that both of the sequential axial substitution reactions are enthalpy driven. Kinetic rate laws and rate constants were determined for the axial substitution reactions of coordinated water by the amino acids that gave the corresponding aqua(amino acid)-Ru-2 substituted species. The results revealed that the [Ru-2(CH3COO)(4)](+) paddlewheel framework remained stable during the axial ligand substitution reactions and was also mostly preserved in the presence of the amino acids.

Understanding how magnetic materials respond to rapidly varying magnetic fields, as in dynamic hysteresis loops, constitutes a complex and physically interesting problem. But in order to accomplish a thorough investigation, one must necessarily consider the effects of thermal fluctuations. Albeit being present in all real systems, these are seldom included in numerical studies. The notable exceptions are the Ising systems, which have been extensively studied in the past, but describe only one of the many mechanisms of magnetization reversal known to occur. In this paper we employ the Stochastic Landau-Lifshitz formalism to study high-frequency hysteresis loops of single-domain particles with uniaxial anisotropy at an arbitrary temperature. We show that in certain conditions the magnetic response may become predominantly out-of-phase and the loops may undergo a dynamic symmetry loss. This is found to be a direct consequence of the competing responses due to the thermal fluctuations and the gyroscopic motion of the magnetization. We have also found the magnetic behavior to be exceedingly sensitive to temperature variations, not only within the superparamagnetic-ferromagnetic transition range usually considered, but specially at even lower temperatures, where the bulk of interesting phenomena is seen to take place. The performance of inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectrometers with axial and radial views for determination of iodine in table salt was evaluated. Interference and memory effects in nitric acid and water-soluble tertiary amines (CFA-C) media were studied. Based on a factorial experiment, one optimum instrument operational condition for axial configuration, and two optima conditions for radial configuration was established. The ICP OES with axial view was 5-fold more sensitive than the radial view. Both matrix matching and standard addition methods were used for iodine quantification and for most samples, both strategies of calibration led to similar results. Recoveries ranged from 104 to 114%.

Der 'gestopfte Hochquarz' ß-Eukryptit (LiAlSiO4) ist bekannt für seine außergewöhnliche anisotrope Li-Ionenleitfähigkeit und die nahe Null liegende thermische Ausdehnung.Untersucht wurde die temperaturabhängige ß-Eukryptit-Phasenabfolge, insbesondere die modulierte Phase. Deren Satellitenreflexe sind gegenüber den normalen Reflexen erheblich verbreitert, überlappen miteinander sowie mit den dazwischen liegenden 'a-Reflexen' zu Tripletts. Für die Separation der Triplett-Intensitäten waren bisherige Standardverfahren zur Beugungsdatensammlung ungeeignet. Mit 'axialen q-Scans' wurde ein neuartiges Verfahren entwickelt. Intensitäten wurden mit dem neu-entwickelten least squares-Programm GKLS aus 2000 Profilen seriell und automatisch gewonnen und erfolgreich auf Standarddaten skaliert. Die Verwendung verbreiterter Reflexprofile erwies sich als zulässig.Die Verbreiterung wurde auf eine verminderte Fernordnung der Modulation von 11 bis 16 Perioden zurückgeführt (Analyse mit der Gitterfunktion), womit ein ungewöhnliches beugungswinkelabhängiges Verhalten der Reflexbreiten korrespondiert und mit typischen Antiphasendomänendurchmessern (andere Autoren) korreliert.Eine verminderte Si-/ Al-Ordnung wird als ursächlich für geringe Domänengrößen und Fernordnung angesehen, sowie für Eigenschaften wie z.B. a/c-Verhältnisse, Ausdehnungskoeffizienten, Ionenleitfähigkeit, Strukturtyp und Umwandlungstemperaturen. Änderungen des SiO2-Gehaltes, der Temperatur oder der Si- /Al-Ordnung zeitigen für einige Eigenschaften ähnliche Wirkungen.Die gemittelte Struktur der modulierten Phase wurde erstmals zuverlässig bestimmt, die Rolle des Li charakterisiert, Zweifel an der hexagonalen Symmetrie des ß-Eukryptits wurden ausgeräumt und die Bestimmung der modulierten Struktur wurde weitgehend vorbereitet.

Die vorliegende Dissertation behandelt den anomalen Sektor bzw. den Sektor ungerader innerer Parität in mesonischer chiraler Störungsrechnung (mesonische ChPT) bis zur chiralen Ordnung O(q^6). Auf eine Einführung in die Quantenchromodynamik (QCD) und ihrer Verknüpfung mit der chiralen Symmetrie folgt die Betrachtung der mesonischen ChPT im Sektor gerader sowie ungerader innerer Parität bis zur Ordnung O(q^4). Der sogenannte Wess-Zumino-Witten Term, welcher den Einfluss der axialen Anomalie bezogen auf die ChPT widerspiegelt, wird studiert. Anschließend wird die allgemeinste Lagrangedichte der Ordnung O(q^6) im Sektor ungerader innerer Parität detailiert analysiert. Sie enthält in ihrer SU(3)-Formulierung 23 Niederenergiekonstanten(low-energy constant=LEC). Aus Sicht der ChPT sind diese LECs freie Parameter, die auf irgendeine Art und Weise fixiert werden müssen. Es wird herausgearbeitet, bei welchen Prozessen und in welchen Kombinationen die jeweiligen LECs auftreten. Daraufhin wird versucht so viele dieser LECs wie möglich mittels Vektormesondominanz (VMD) sowie experimenteller Daten abzuschätzen und anzupassen. Hierfür wird zuerst die Vorgehensweise einer konsistenten Rechnung im Sektor ungerader innerer Parität bis zur Ordnung O(q^6) studiert, gefolgt von der Berechnung von insgesamt vierzehn geeigneten Prozessen im Rahmen der ChPT bis zur Ordnung O(q^6). Unter Verwendung experimenteller Daten werden dreizehn der LECs angepasst, wobei gegenwärtig nicht bei allen betrachteten Prozessen experimentelle Daten zur Verfügung stehen. Die Ergebnisse werden diskutiert und Unterschiede bzw. Übereinstimmungen mit anderen Rechnungen herausgearbeitet. Zusammenfassend erhält man einen umfassenden Einblick in den Sektor ungerader innerer Parität in mesonischer ChPT bis zur Ordnung O(q^6).
