An amorphous silicon carbonitride (Si1-x-yCxN y, x = 0:43, y = 0:31) coating was deposited on polyimide substrate using the magnetron-sputtering method. Exposure tests of the coated polyimide in atomic oxygen beam and vacuum ultraviolet radiation were performed in a ground-based simulator. Erosion kinetics measurements indicated that the erosion yield of the Si0.26C0.43N0.31 coating was about 1.5x and 1.8 × 10-26 cm3 /atom during exposure in single atomic oxygen beam, simultaneous atomic oxygen beam, and vacuum ultraviolet radiation, respectively. These values were 2 orders of magnitude lower than that of bare polyimide substrate. Scanning electron and atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy investigation indicated that during exposures, an oxide-rich layer composed of SiO2 and minor Si-C-O formed on the surface of the Si 0.26C0.43N0.31 coating, which was the main reason for the excellent resistance to the attacks of atomic oxygen. Moreover, vacuum ultraviolet radiation could promote the breakage of chemical bonds with low binding energy, such as C-N, C = N, and C-C, and enhance atomic oxygen erosion rate slightly.

We have investigated the local electronic properties and the spatially resolved magnetoresistance of a nanostructured film of a colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) material by local conductance mapping (LCMAP) using a variable temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) operating in a magnetic field. The nanostructured thin films (thickness ≈500nm) of the CMR material La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) on quartz substrates were prepared using chemical solution deposition (CSD) process. The CSD grown films were imaged by both STM and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Due to the presence of a large number of grain boundaries (GB's), these films show low field magnetoresistance (LFMR) which increases at lower temperatures. The measurement of spatially resolved electronic properties reveal the extent of variation of the density of states (DOS) at and close to the Fermi level (EF) across the grain boundaries and its role in the electrical resistance of the GB. Measurement of the local conductance maps (LCMAP) as a function of magnetic field as well as temperature reveals that the LFMR occurs at the GB. While it was known that LFMR in CMR films originates from the GB, this is the first investigation that maps the local electronic properties at a GB in a magnetic field and traces the origin of LFMR at the GB.

Radical catalyzed thiol-ene reaction has become a useful alternative to the Huisgen-type azide-yne click reaction as it helps expand the variability in reaction conditions as well as the range of clickable entities. In this study, the direct generation of a hyperbranched polyether (HBPE) having decyl units at the periphery and a pendant allyl group on every repeat unit of the polymer backbone is described; the allyl groups serve as a reactive handle for postpolymerization modifications and permits the generation of a variety of internally functionalized HBPEs. In this design, the AB(2) monomer carries two decylbenzyl ether units (B-functionality), an aliphatic OH (A-functionality) and a pendant allyl group within the spacer segment; polymerization of the monomer readily occurs at 150 degrees C via melt transetherification process by continuous removal of 1-decanol under reduced pressure. The resulting HBPE has a hydrophobic periphery due to the presence of numerous decyl chains, while the allyl groups that remain unaffected during the melt polymerization provides an opportunity to install a variety of functional groups within the interior; thiol-ene click reaction with two different thiols, namely 3-mercaptopropionic acid and mercaptosuccinic acid, generated interesting amphiphilic structures. Preliminary field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) imaging studies reveal the formation of fairly uniform spherical aggregates in water with sizes ranging from 200 to 400 nm; this suggests that these amphiphilic HBPs is able to reconfigure to generate jellyfish-like conformations that subsequently aggregate in an alkaline medium. The internal allyl functional groups were also used to generate intramolecularly core-crosslinked HBPEs, by the use of dithiol crosslinkers; gel permeation chromatography traces provided clear evidence for reduction in the size after crosslinking. In summary, we have developed a simple route to prepare core-clickable HBPEs and have demonstrated the quantitative reaction of the allyl groups present within the interior of the polymers; such HB polymeric systems that carry numerous functional groups within the core could have interesting applications in analyte sequestration and possibly sensing, especially from organic media. Nonviral gene delivery offers cationic liposomes as promising instruments for the delivery of double-stranded RNA (ds RNA) molecules for successful sequence-specific gene silencing (RNA interference). The efficient delivery of siRNA (small interfering RNA) to cells while avoiding unexpected side effects is an important prerequisite for the exploitation of the power of this excellent tool. We present here six new tocopherol based cationic gemini lipids, which induce substantial gene knockdown without any obvious cytotoxicity. All the efficient coliposomal formulations derived from each of these geminis and a helper lipid, dioleoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DOPE), were well characterized using physical methods such as atomic force microscopy (AFM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Zeta potential measurements were conducted to estimate the surface charge of these formulations. Flow cytometric analysis showed that the optimized coliposomal formulations could transfect anti-GFP siRNA efficiently in three different GFP expressing cell lines, viz., HEK 293T, HeLa, and Caco-2, significantly better than a potent commercial standard Lipofectamine 2000 (L2K) both in the absence and in the presence of serum (FBS). Notably, the knockdown activity of coliposomes of gemini lipids was not affected even in the presence of serum (10% and 50% FBS) while it dropped down for L2K significantly. Observations under a fluorescence microscope, RT-PCR, and Western blot analysis substantiated the flow cytometry results. The efficient cellular entry of labeled siRNA in GFP expressing cells as evidenced from confocal microscopy put forward these gemini lipids among the potent lipidic carriers for siRNA. The efficient transfection capabilities were also profiled in a more relevant fashion while performing siRNA transfections against survivin (an anti-apoptotic protein) which induced substantial apoptosis. Furthermore, the survivin downregulation improved the therapeutic efficacy levels of an anticancer drug, doxorubicin, significantly. In short, the new tocopherol based gemini lipids appear to be highly promising for achieving siRNA mediated gene knockdown in various cell lines.

In order to enhance the piezoelectric b-phase, PVDF was electrospun from DMF solution. The enhanced b-phase was discerned by comparing the electrospun fibers against the melt mixed samples. While both the processes resulted in phase transformation of a-to electroactive b-polymorph in PVDF, the fraction of b-phase was strongly dependent on the adopted process. Two different nanoscopic particles: carboxyl functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and silver (Ag) decorated CNTs were used to further enhance the piezoelectric coefficient in the electrospun fibers. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD) supports the development of piezoelectric b-phase in PVDF. It was concluded that electrospinning was the best technique for inducing the b-polymorph in PVDF. This was attributed to the high voltage electrostatic field that generates extensional forces on the polymer chains that aligns the dipoles in one direction. The ferroelectric and piezoelectric measurement on electrospun fibers were studied using piezo-response force microscope (PFM). The Ag-CNTs filled PVDF electrospun fibers showed the highest piezoelectric coefficient (d(33) = 54 pm V-1) in contrast to PVDF/CNT fibers (35 pm V-1) and neat PVDF (30 pm V-1). This study demonstrates that the piezoelectric coefficient can be enhanced significantly by electrospinning PVDF containing Ag decorated nanoparticles.

Aiming at understanding how a liquid film on a substrate affects the atomic force microscopic image in experiments, we present an analytical representation of the shape of liquid surface under van der Waals interaction induced by a non-contact probe tip. The analytical expression shows good consistence with the corresponding numerical results. According to the expression, we find that the vertical scale of the liquid dome is mainly governed by a combination of van der Waals force, surface tension and probe tip radius, and is weekly related to gravity. However, its horizontal extension is determined by the capillary length.

ZnO piezoelectric thin films were prepared on crystal substrate Si(111) by sol-gel technology, then characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The ZnO films characterized by X-ray diffraction are highly oriented in (002) direction with the growing of the film thickness. The morphologies, roughness and grain size of ZnO film investigated by AFM show that roughness and grain size of ZnO piezoelectric films decrease with the increase of the film thickness. The roughness dimension is 2.188-0.914 nm. The piezoelectric coefficient d(33) was investigated with a piezo-response force microscope (PFM). The results show that the piezoelectric coefficient increases with the increase of thickness and (002) orientation. When the force reference is close to surface roughness of the films, the piezoelectric coefficient measured is inaccurate and fluctuates in a large range, but when the force reference is big, the piezoelectric coefficient d(33) changes little and ultimately keeps constant at a low frequency.

Functionalized graphene is a versatile material that has well-known physical and chemical properties depending on functional groups and their coverage. However, selective control of functional groups on the nanoscale is hardly achievable by conventional methods utilizing chemical modifications. We demonstrate electrical control of nanoscale functionalization of graphene with the desired chemical coverage of a selective functional group by atomic force microscopy (AFM) lithography and their full recovery through moderate thermal treatments. Surprisingly, our controlled coverage of functional groups can reach 94.9% for oxygen and 49.0% for hydrogen, respectively, well beyond those achieved by conventional methods. This coverage is almost at the theoretical maximum, which is verified through scanning photoelectron microscope measurements as well as first-principles calculations. We believe that the present method is now ready to realize 'chemical pencil drawing' of atomically defined circuit devices on top of a monolayer of graphene. © 2014 Nature Publishing Group All rights reserved.

We studied the impact of the thickness of GaN buffer layer on the properties of distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The samples were characterized by using metallographic microscope, transmission electron microscope (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and spectrophotometer. The results show that the thickness of the GaN buffer layer can significantly affect the properties of the DBR structure and there is an optimal thickness of the GaN buffer layer. This work would be helpful for the growth of high quality DBR structures.

Surface micro-roughness, surface chemical properties, and surface wettability are three important aspects of wafer surfaces during a wafer cleaning process, which determine the bonding quality of ordinary direct wafer bonding. In this study, InP wafers are divided into four groups and treated by different chemical processes. Subsequently, the characteristics of the treated InP surfaces are carefully studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and contact angle measurements. The optimal wafer treatment method for wafer bonding is determined by comparing the results of the processes as a whole. This optimization is later evaluated by a scanning electronic microscope (SEM), and the ridge waveguide 1.55 mu m Si-based InP/InGaAsP multi-quantum-well laser chips are also fabricated. Influences of reactor pressure of GaN buffer layers on morphological evolution of GaN grown by MOCVD
Resumo:
The morphological evolution of GaN thin films grown on sapphire by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition was demonstrated to depend strongly on the growth pressure of GaN nucleation layer (NL). For the commonly used two-step growth process, a change in deposition pressure of NL greatly influences the growth mode and morphological evolution of the following GaN epitaxy. By means of atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscope, it is shown that the initial density and the spacing of nucleation sites on the NL and subsequently the growth mode of FIT GaN epilayer may be directly controlled by tailoring the initial low temperature NL growth pressure. A mode is proposed to explain the TD reduction for NL grown at relatively high reactor pressure. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Horizontal air-cooled low-pressure hot-wall CVD (LP-HWCVD) system is developed to get high quality 4H-SiC epilayers. Homoepitaxial growth of 4H-SiC on off-oriented Si-face (0001) 4H-SiC substrates purchased from Cree is performed at a typical temperature of 1500 degrees C with a pressure of 40 Torr by using SiH4+C2H4+H-2 gas system. The surface morphologies and structural and optical properties of 4H-SiC epilayers are characterized with Nomarski optical microscope, atomic force microscopy (AFM), x-ray diffraction, Raman scattering, and low temperature photoluminescence (LTPL). The background doping of 32 pm-thick sample has been reduced to 2-5 x 10(15) cm(-3). The FWHM of the rocking curve is 9-16 arcsec. Intentional N-doped and B-doped 4H-SiC epilayers are obtained by in-situ doping of NH3 and B2H6, respectively. Schottky barrier diodes with reverse blocking voltage of over 1000 V are achieved preliminarily.
