ABSTRACT As a result of globalization processes, the business world is subject to constant change. This has resulted in the need for companies to evaluate their performance in order to adjust their processes to the best managerial and operational practices, with the goal to adapt to the demands present in the scenarios in which they are embedded. This research aimed to develop an explanatory model of the relationship between productivity and organizational values. In addition, it was based on the different approaches or theories that relate the importance for enterprises of the organizational values to achieve their goals. Specifically, reference was made to the classification of organizational values, which includes the model of Management by Values (DPV) following García and Dolan (1997). The SMEs, considering the effect of organizational values on productivity, can support their management through the commitment of their people to achieve productivity results that they want or need to accomplish. The study approach was based on explanatory research, which presents the reasons for occurrence of a phenomenon and the mechanisms through which two or more variables are related. This allowed to combine definitions and assumptions about the relationship found between organizational values and the productivity results of the companies that took part in this research. Organizational values were identified in the opinion of the managers interviewed, and were found to be significant with the productivity results. The population consisted of 40 active enterprises of the metallurgical and mining industry of Ciudad Guayana, Estado Bolivar, Venezuela. These enterprises were members of the Association of Metallurgical and Mining Industry of the Guayana Region (AIMM, by its acronym in Spanish) and the Directory of the Chamber of Industrial and Mining of Guayana. The sample of the study is comprised of 25 enterprises, which represent 62% of the total population. The process which has been followed to generate the explanatory model involves three stages. The first stage is the descriptive phase where the information about enterprises productivity and the determination of organizational values is gathered. These organizational values were identified by a qualitative analysis of the interviews conducted with managers of each enterprise. This analysis was performed using the Atlas ti 6.0 software. The second stage, denominated comparative, consisted in determining the relationship between productivity and organizational values through contingency tables, and according to the degree of significance showed by the Chi-Square, statistic. The third, and final stage of the process, is the explanatory phase. This consisted in estimating the magnitude of the relationship between productivity and organizational values variables using the Pearson's contingency coefficient. In addition, this stage comprises the establishment of the associations according to the observed proximities that resulted from the multiple correspondence analysis. Among the findings of this study, it was found that the productivity of enterprises can be set in three categories: high, medium and low. Additionally, it was found that in the external context the factors that stand out affecting productivity are: government policy, customers and suppliers, while in the domestic context they are: labor, materials and supplies. According to the opinion of the managers interviewed the organizational values that characterize the companies that were studied are grouped into twenty seven categories. These categories are classified into the following components: market environment, customers, suppliers and other allied companies, the environment, how Management deals with of the employees, way to work every day, and management of economic resources. Organizational values that were found to be significant were innovation, honesty and order and cleanliness. The magnitude of the relation of the innovation value was found to be moderately strong. It is inferred that companies that have low productivity decide to innovate in the development of new products. The honesty value showed a moderately strong relation, determining that high productivity enterprises base their relationships with suppliers on honesty. Lastly, the order and cleanliness value showed a moderately weak relation, which suggests that average productivity enterprises have a preference to maintain order and cleanliness in the work areas. The explanatory model of the relationship between productivity and organizational values, in the SMEs of the metallurgical and mining sector of Ciudad Guayana, was composed of the following components: market, customers, suppliers and other allied companies, and the environment. No relationships were found in the following components: how Management deals with employees, way to work every day, and management of economic resources.

ABSTRACT. This project is part of the impact studies arisen in companies by the development and incorporation of new technologies and, specifically, by the implementation of applications from the so-called web 2.0. That is how we call the web tools that allow bidirectional communication, this is, user and company can exchange opinions, in such a way that users acquire a leading role, submitting ideas, explanations, preferences, criticism... considered by the company when performing its activities. This way, we have broken with the previous model, where users could only check information from a web page and were simple information recipients. The objective of this study is to get to know how companies are incorporating these technologies 2.0 to their business strategy and how terms such as open innovation or co-creation are becoming more important in the business sphere thanks to these new technologies. Even if there are consulting studies that generally provide information about which are the platforms 2.0 more used in the business world, no studies have been found until now that link such platforms among them and with the business structure, in order to define a profile of the organization that works with them or the level of development of the incorporation of these technologies in the organizations. A qualitative analysis of these aspects involves studying the new concepts incorporated to technologies 2.0 by companies. A qualitative analysis would lead us to study in a practical manner what kind of resources and what amount are being used and their relation with the organization structure. Therefore: First, we will focus on the different ways to gain access to the Internet and, afterwards, we will focus the study on mobile devices that allow us to be connected everywhere any time. This way, we will manage to obtain a present situation of the ICT market and we will see how companies have constructed new policies to change their strategy in order to be present in the new mobile devices without losing their market share. Later, we will review why concepts such as open innovation and co-creation process have been possible thanks to the implementation of technologies 2.0 in the business environment, facilitating that companies and final users cooperate and walk hand in hand in the same direction; companies stock up on the contributions offered by users and, on the other hand, users feel appreciated by companies in the achievement of the final goal. Here we will confirm the transformation suffering by companies in different department sectors (marketing, sales, human resources and customer service) as a result of the incorporation of tools 2.0 to the work environment. Therefore, we will enumerate the different uses that companies make of the most common social networks, describing the main tools and/or applications to monitor social networks used by companies to follow them up. The second part of the project will be a case study to offer a more real vision of the present status of companies and their relation with social networks. To collect the data, we have selected companies from the “Manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products” industry. The social networks chosen are Facebook and Twitter. This case study will help us to get a better understanding of the direct impact of social networks in companies’ daily activity. Finally, we will offer a series of considerations and guidelines to try to understand how are social networks being used in the business environment and what can be the most suitable manner to use them according to this study.

ABSTRACT Scarce resources, climate change, poverty and underdevelopment, natural disasters are just some of the great challenges facing humanity and to which the green economy will have to respond. The sustainable concept arises from the need for all human activities in a new equilibrium with the environment, society and the economy, which is known as sustainable development. The construction industry is part of this concept, because of its major impacts on resources, waste, emissions, biodiversity, landscape, social needs, integration, economical development, environment, etc. Therefore, sustainable construction has a critical importance as already demonstrated by its wide application and theoretical practice in urban planning and building projects. In civil engineering, these approaches are still minimal, although some criteria are already taken into account for sustainability in infrastructure projects. The construction industry requires a lot of natural resources, has a real economic relevance and a huge social impact. Currently, it consumes 40% of produced power as well as natural resources extracted from the earth and thus leads to an environmental impact of 40% regarding greenhouse gas emissions and solid wastes (EEA 2014). These repercussions should highly concern our governments and professional of this industry on the decisions they take regarding investments and designs. They must be inflexible in order to ensure that the main concern has to be a maximum efficiency. Major events like the COP21 held in Paris in December 2015 are a concrete signal of the worldwide awareness of the huge impact of each industry on climate. In this doctoral thesis a new model for the evaluation of the sustainability in the projects by means of a system of indicators, based on the areas of study of the existing certifications of sustainability and on an analysis considers multi-criterion of each one of the axioms of the sustainability. The primary aim of this thesis is to study the mode of application of sustainability in projects through a system of indicators. . The main challenge consists of create a methodology suitable to identify, prioritize and select the most important indicators which define if a building is sustainable in the specific case of railway infrastructures. The methodology will help to adapt future projects to the new goals of sustainable development which are respect of nature, social integration and economic relevance. A crucial point is the consideration of these indicators from the very beginning steps of the projects: planning, design and alternatives reflections. First of all, a complete inventory of all world energy certification organizations has been made in order to compare the most representative ones regarding their way of functioning (BREEAM, LEED, VERDE, DGNB). After this, mathematical tool MIVES of analysis has been analyzed multi-criterion for its application, in the thesis, to railway infrastructures. The second part of the thesis is aimed to develop a new model of indicators, inspired by the MIVES method, consisting in a decision-making system based on the 3 foundations of sustainability: nature impact, social concerns, and economic relevance. The methodology MIVES structures the decision process in three axes: Requirements, components and life cycle. These axes define the boundaries of the systems. The axis of requirements o tree requirements is structured in three levels corresponding to specific requirement: criteria and indicators. In addition, is necessary define the value function for each indicator, define the weight of importance of each element of the tree and finally with the calculate the value of each alternative select the best of them. The generation of this tree requirements in railway structures and measuring the parameter is original for this type of structures. Finally, after the development of the methodology, it has validated the methodology through practical implementation, applying the proposed method 2 existing railway bridges. The results showed that the tool is able to establish a coherent management of performances and discriminating enough so that the decision maker should not have doubts when making the decision. This phase, is one of the great contributions of the thesis, since it allows to differentiate the weights obtained in each one from the study areas and where the decision making can vary depending on the necessities of the decisor, the location of the bridge of study etc.

Major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes encode cell surface proteins whose function is to bind and present intracellularly processed peptides to T lymphocytes of the immune system. Extensive MHC diversity has been documented in many species and is maintained by some form of balancing selection. We report here that both European and North American populations of moose (Alces alces) exhibit very low levels of genetic diversity at an expressed MHC class II DRB locus. The observed polymorphism was restricted to six amino acid substitutions, all in the peptide binding site, and four of these were shared between continents. The data imply that the moose have lost MHC diversity in a population bottleneck, prior to the divergence of the Old and New World subspecies. Sequence analysis of mtDNA showed that the two subspecies diverged at least 100,000 years ago. Thus, viable moose populations with very restricted MHC diversity have been maintained for a long period of time. Both positive selection for polymorphism and intraexonic recombination have contributed to the generation of MHC diversity after the putative bottleneck.

This methodological note describes the development and application of a mixed-methods protocol to assess the responsiveness of Spanish health systems to violence against women in Spain, based on the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations. Five areas for exploration were identified based on the WHO recommendations: policy environment, protocols, training, accountability/monitoring, and prevention/promotion. Two data collection instruments were developed to assess the situation of 17 Spanish regional health systems (RHS) with respect to these areas: 1) a set of indicators to guide a systematic review of secondary sources, and 2) an interview guide to be used with 26 key informants at the regional and national levels. We found differences between RHSs in the five areas assessed. The progress of RHSs on the WHO recommendations was notable at the level of policies, moderate in terms of health service delivery, and very limited in terms of preventive actions. Using a mixed-methods approach was useful for triangulation and complementarity during instrument design, data collection and interpretation.

This study aims to analyze how middle-level health systems’ managers understand the integration of a health care response to intimate partner violence (IPV) within the Spanish health system. Data were obtained through 26 individual interviews with professionals in charge of coordinating the health care response to IPV within the 17 regional health systems in Spain. The transcripts were analyzed following grounded theory in accordance with the constructivist approach described by Charmaz. Three categories emerged, showing the efforts and challenges to integrate a health care response to IPV within the Spanish health system: “IPV is a complex issue that generates activism and/or resistance,” “The mandate to integrate a health sector response to IPV: a priority not always prioritized,” and “The Spanish health system: respectful with professionals’ autonomy and firmly biomedical.” The core category, “Developing diverse responses to IPV integration,” crosscut the three categories and encompassed the range of different responses that emerge when a strong mandate to integrate a health care response to IPV is enacted. Such responses ranged from refraining to deal with the issue to offering a women-centered response. Attempting to integrate a response to nonbiomedical health problems as IPV into health systems that remain strongly biomedicalized is challenging and strongly dependent both on the motivation of professionals and on organizational factors. Implementing and sustaining changes in the structure and culture of the health care system are needed if a health care response to IPV that fulfills the World Health Organization guidelines is to be ensured.

This paper analyses the consequences of enhanced biofuel production in regions and countries of the world that have announced plans to implement or expand on biofuel policies. The analysis considers biofuel policies implemented as binding blending targets for transportation fuels. The chosen quantitative modelling approach is two-fold: it combines the analysis of biofuel policies in a multi-sectoral economic model (MAGNET) with systematic variation of the functioning of capital and labour markets. This paper adds to existing research by considering biofuel policies in the EU, the US and various other countries with considerable agricultural production and trade, such as Brazil, India and China. Moreover, the application multi-sectoral modelling system with different assumptions on the mobility of factor markets allows for the observation of changes in economic indicators under different conditions of how factor markets work. Systematic variation of factor mobility indicates that the ‘burden’ of global biofuel policies is not equally distributed across different factors within agricultural production. Agricultural land, as the pre-dominant and sector-specific factor, is, regardless of different degrees of inter-sectoral or intra-sectoral factor mobility, the most important factor limiting the expansion of agricultural production. More capital and higher employment in agriculture will ease the pressure on additional land use – but only partly. To expand agricultural production at global scale requires both land and mobile factors adapted to increase total factor productivity in agriculture in the most efficient way.

Two cores, Site 1089 (ODP Leg 177) and PS2821-1, recovered from the same location (40°56'S; 9°54'E) at the Subtropical Front (STF) in the Atlantic Sector of the Southern Ocean, provide a high-resolution climatic record, with an average temporal resolution of less than 600 yr. A multi-proxy approach was used to produce an age model for Core PS2821-1, and to correlate the two cores. Both cores document the last climatic cycle, from Marine Isotopic Stage 6 (MIS 6, ca. 160 kyr BP, ka) to present. Summer sea-surface temperatures (SSSTs) have been estimated, with a standard error of ca. +/-1.16°C, for the down core record by using Q-mode factor analysis (Imbrie and Kipp method). The paleotemperatures show a 7°C warming at Termination II (last interglacial, transition from MIS 6 to MIS 5). This transition from glacial to interglacial paleotemperatures (with maximum temperatures ca. 3°C warmer than present at the core location) occurs earlier than the corresponding shift in delta18O values for benthic foraminifera from the same core; this suggests a lead of Southern Ocean paleotemperature changes compared to the global ice-volume changes, as indicated by the benthic isotopic record. The climatic evolution of the record continues with a progressive temperature deterioration towards MIS 2. High-frequency, millennial-scale climatic instability has been documented for MIS 3 and part of MIS 4, with sudden temperature variations of almost the same magnitude as those observed at the transitions between glacial and interglacial times. These changes occur during the same time interval as the Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles recognized in the delta18Oice record of the GRIP and GISP ice cores from Greenland, and seem to be connected to rapid changes in the STF position in relation to the core location. Sudden cooling episodes ('Younger Dryas (YD)-type' and 'Antarctic Cold Reversal (ACR)-type' of events) have been recognized for both Termination I (ACR-I and YD-I events) and II (ACR-II and YD-II events), and imply that our core is located in an optimal position in order to record events triggered by phenomena occurring in both hemispheres. Spectral analysis of our SSST record displays strong analogies, particularly for high, sub-orbital frequencies, to equivalent records from Vostok (Antarctica) and from the Subtropical North Atlantic ocean. This implies that the climatic variability of widely separated areas (the Antarctic continent, the Subtropical North Atlantic, and the Subantarctic South Atlantic) can be strongly coupled and co-varying at millennial time scales (a few to 10-ka periods), and eventually induced by the same triggering mechanisms. Climatic variability has also been documented for supposedly warm and stable interglacial intervals (MIS 1 and 5), with several cold events which can be correlated to other Southern Ocean and North Atlantic sediment records.

We present time series of export productivity proxy data including 230Thex-normalized deposition rates (rain rates) of 10Be, dissolution-corrected biogenic Ba, and biogenic opal as well as authigenic U concentrations which are complemented by rain rates of total (detrital) Fe and sea ice indicating diatom abundances from five sediment cores across the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean covering the past 150,000 years. The results suggest that 10Be rain rates and authigenic U concentration cannot serve as quantitative paleoproductivity proxies because they have also been influenced by detrital particle fluxes in the case of 10Be and bulk sedimentation rates (sediment focussing) and deep water oxygenation in the case of U. The combined results of the remaining productivity proxies of this study (rain rates of biogenic opal and biogenic Ba in those sections without authigenic U) and other previously published proxy data from the Southern Ocean (231Pa/230Th and nitrogen isotopes) suggest that a combination of sea ice cover, shallow remineralization depth, and stratification of the glacial water column south of the present position of the Antarctic Polar Front and possibly Fe fertilization north of it have been the main controlling factors of export paleoproductivity in the Southern Ocean over the last 150,000 years. An overall glacial increase of export paleoproductivity is not supported by the data, implying that bioproductivity variations in the Southern Ocean are unlikely to have contributed to the major glacial atmospheric CO2 drawdown observed in ice cores.

Quantitative data on radiolarian assemblages from the Benguela upwelling at 17-25°S were obtained from analysis of 18 bottom sediment samples. The maximum abundance of Radiolaria (20000-40000 individuals per 1 g of sediment) was determined in sediments of the open ocean at depth 2000-4100 m. Species of tropical zones dominate in the assemblages; however content of species of subpolar and moderate zones reaches considerable values. In shelf sediments at depth 60-160 m abundance of Radiolaria (up to 5000 ind./g) is greater than in sediments of the continental slope. In shelf assemblages species of subpolar and temperate zones dominate. A characteristic feature of the shelf upwelling assemblages of Radiolaria is expressed by predominance of Lithomelissa setosa (Joerg.) (up to 50-80% at 23-25°S). L. setosa is a common representative of radiolarian assemblages of subpolar and temperate regions of the World Ocean. It is presumably regarded as an eurybiont species. Probably, it propagates with subantarctic intermediate water masses from the circumantarctic area to the Benguela upwelling region where there are favorable living conditions: subsurface water temperature is not higher than 10°C and there are high concentrations of nutrients.
