Experimental results at X-band are used to compare the electromagnetic scattering from a printed reflectarray cell, which is constructed on 500 mu m thick layers of three different nematic state liquid crystals. It is shown that a small voltage can be used to vary the permittivity of the tunable substrate and thereby control the phase of the reflected signals. Numerical results using Ansoft HFSS are compared with the measured phase, resonant frequencies and signal attenuation for two orientations of the liquid crystal molecules. Data fitting is employed to quantify the loss tangent and the permittivity values of the three anisotropic specimens. The performance trade-offs that are imposed by the use of commercially available materials are discussed, and the computer model is used to specify the electrical properties of a liquid crystal mixture, which can provide a signal loss of <1 dB and a dynamic phase range of 300 degrees from the patch elements at 10 GHz.

The electrical characteristics of various elements that can be used as spatial phase shifters in circularly polarised (CP) reflectarrays are contrasted. The elements investigated are; a single rotating dipole at 10.3 GHz; a multiple dipole at 18.2 GHz; a rotating stub at 2.8 GHz; and a periphery point short-circuited circular patch at 3.0 GHz. For each element type, results are presented for the reflection phase, polarisation purity and reflection loss. Where appropriate, experiments are performed using the waveguide simulator technique to validate the numerical EM simulation.

This paper gives the first experimental characterisation of the phase noise response of the recently introduced Inverse Class E topology when operated as an amplifier and then as an oscillator. The results indicate that in amplifier and oscillator modes of operation conversion efficiencies of 64%, and 42% respectively are available, and that the excess PM noise added as a consequence of saturated Class E operation results in about a 10 dB increase in PM over that expected from a small-signal Class A amplifier operating at much lower efficiency. Inverse Class E phase transfer dependence on device drain bias and flicker noise are presented in order to show, respectively, that the Inverse Class E amplifier and oscillator follow the trends predicted by conventional phase noise theory. © 2007 EuMA.

In DSP applications such as fixed transforms and filtering, the full flexibility of a general-purpose multiplier is not required and only a limited range of values is needed on one of the multiplier inputs. A new design technique has been developed for deriving multipliers that operate on a limited range of multiplicands. This can be used to produce FPGA implementations of DSP systems where area is dramatically improved. The paper describes the technique and its application to the design of a poly-phase filter on a Virtex FPGA. A 62% area reduction and 7% speed increase is gained when compared to an equivalent design using general purpose multipliers. It is also compared favourably to other known fixed coefficient approaches.

The dehydrogenation of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydrocarbazole (THCZ) to form carbazole (CZ) over supported palladium catalysts was examined in the presence of hydrogen acceptors. As expected, liquid hydrogen acceptors increased the rate of reaction but, importantly, gaseous hydrogen acceptors also have been used. Ethene, propene, and but-1-ene showed up to a fivefold increase in the rate of dehydrogenation. Moreover, compared with the analogous liquid systems, the gaseous alternatives are a potentially more economic method of enhancing the activity and provide a simpler workup. The mechanism for the increase in rate was examined by density functional theory calculations, which showed that the propene hydrogenation competes effectively with the back-hydrogenation of the intermediates formed during the THCZ dehydrogenation, resulting in a shift in the equilibrium toward to the formation of CZ. A series of Hunig's base tethered ammonium ionic liquids have been used to catalyse the Knoevenagel condensation of aldehydes/ketones with malononitrile and ethyl cyanoacetate. The reactions were performed under homogeneous and under biphasic, liquid-liquid and liquid-silica supported ionic liquid, conditions with the biphasic systems employing cyclohexene as the second phase. By increasing the distance between the ammonium head group and Hunig's base the activity of the catalyst was found to increase. Higher activity, in general, was found under homogeneous reaction conditions; however, the recyclability of the catalyst was improved by supporting the BIL under biphasic conditions. Gas-phase photocatalysis of 1,4-dichlorobut-2-enes and 3,4-dichlorobut-1-ene (DCB) has been studied using TiO2 and 3%WO3/TiO2 supported on SiO2. DCB was found to oxidize efficiently over these catalysts; however, only low rates of CO2 formation were observed. With these chlorinated hydrocarbons, the catalysts were found to deactivate over time, probably via the formation of aldol condensation products of chloroacetaldehyde, which is the predominant intermediate observed. The variation in rate and selectivity of the oxidation reactions with O-2 concentration is reported and a mechanism is proposed. Using isotope ratio mass spectrometry, the initial step for the DCB removal has been shown not to be a carbon bond cleavage but is likely to be hydroxyl radical addition to the carbon-carbon double bond.

The hydrodechlorination of chlorobenzene over supported palladium catalysts has been studied. The palladium catalysts: deactivate as the reaction proceeds due to the HCl formed as by-product. The effect of the addition of sodium compounds has been analysed for the neutralisation of HCl. When NaOH was added to the reaction mixture, no beneficial effect was observed due to the detrimental effect of the alkaline medium on the textural and metallic properties of the catalysts. Doping the support with NaOH prior to impregnation with the metal precursor leads (after calcination and reduction) to catalysts with better activity and tolerance to deactivation, especially those obtained when using PdCl2 as the metal precursor. Low metal dispersion and the capture of chloride by forming NaCl are the: main factors contributing to the: improved catalytic properties. Finally, doping the catalysts with NaOH or NaNO3, after reduction of the metal precursor leads to a moderate increase in initial activity and final conversion, although NaOH impregnation also gave rise to support corrosion and metal dispersion modification. Inductively coupled radio-frequency plasmas can be operated in two distinct modes. At low power and comparatively low plasma densities the plasma is sustained in capacitive mode (E-mode). As the plasma density increases a transition to inductive mode (H-mode) is observed. This transition region is of particular interest and governed by non-linear dynamics, which under certain conditions results in structure formation with strong spatial gradients in light emission. These modes show pronounced differences is various measureable quantities e.g. electron densities, electron energy distribution functions, ion energy distribution functions, dynamics of optical light emission. Here the transition from E- to H- mode in an oxygen containing inductively coupled plasma (ICP) is investigated using space and phase resolved optical emission spectroscopy (PROES). The emission, measured phase resolved, allows investigation of the electron dynamics within the rf cycle, important for understanding the power coupling and ionization mechanisms in the discharge. The temporal variation of the emission reflects the dynamics of relatively high-energy electrons. It is possible to distinguish between E- and H-mode from the intensity and temporal behaviour of the emission.
