Low-spin (LS) to intermediate-spin (IS) state transitions in crystals of LnCoO(3) (Ln = La, Pr and Nd) have been investigated by variable temperature infrared spectroscopy. The spectra reveal the occurrence of the transition around 120, 220 and 275 K, respectively, in LaCoO3,PrCoo(3) and NdCoO3, at which temperatures the intensities of the stretching and the bending modes associated with the LS state decrease, accompanied by an increase in the intensities of the bands due to IS state. The characteristic frequencies of both the spin states decrease with increase in temperature, showing anomalies around the transition. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Substantial amount of fixed charge present in most of the alternative gate dielectrics gives rise to large shifts in the flat-band voltage (VFB) and charge trapping and de-trapping causes hysterectic changes on voltage cycling. Both phenomena affect stable and reliable transistor operation. In this paper we have studied for the first time the effect of post-metallization hydrogen annealing on the C-V curve of MOS capacitors employing zirconia, one of the most promising gate dielectric. Samples were annealed in hydrogen ambient for up to 30 minutes at different temperatures ranging from room temperature to 400°C. C-V measurements were done after annealing at each temperature and the hysteresis width was calculated from the C-V curves. A minimum hysteresis width of ∼35 mV was observed on annealing the sample at 200°C confirming the excellent suitability of this dielectric

We propose a scheme for the compression of tree structured intermediate code consisting of a sequence of trees specified by a regular tree grammar. The scheme is based on arithmetic coding, and the model that works in conjunction with the coder is automatically generated from the syntactical specification of the tree language. Experiments on data sets consisting of intermediate code trees yield compression ratios ranging from 2.5 to 8, for file sizes ranging from 167 bytes to 1 megabyte.

We formulate a low energy effective Hamiltonian to study superlattices in bilayer graphene (BLG) using a minimal model which supports quadratic band touching points. We show that a one dimensional (1D) periodic modulation of the chemical potential or the electric field perpendicular to the layers leads to the generation of zero-energy anisotropic massless Dirac fermions and finite energy Dirac points with tunable velocities. The electric field superlattice maps onto a coupled chain model comprised of ``topological'' edge modes. 2D superlattice modulations are shown to lead to gaps on the mini-Brillouin zone boundary but do not, for certain symmetries, gap out the quadratic band touching point. Such potential variations, induced by impurities and rippling in biased BLG, could lead to subgap modes which are argued to be relevant to understanding transport measurements.

We calculate the optical conductivity sigma(omega) for doped rare-earth manganites based on the recently proposed microscopic ``two fluid'' l-b model. We study the temperature dependence of sigma(omega) for La(0.825)Sr(0.175)MnO(3), which has a metallic ground state. At low temperatures, the calculated sigma(omega) shows a ``two-peak'' structure consisting of a far-infrared coherent Drude peak and a broad mid-infrared ``polaron'' peak, as observed in experiments. Upon heating, the Drude peak rapidly loses spectral weight, and sigma(omega) crosses over to having just a single broad mid-infrared peak. The temperature dependence of the mid-infrared peak and the spectral weight transfer between the two peaks are also in agreement with experimental findings. We also study the doping dependence of sigma(omega) for the same compound. The integrated spectral weight under the Drude peak increases rapidly as the doping level is increased from an underdoped, insulating state (x = 0.1) to a highly doped, metallic state (x = 0.3), again in agreement with trends seen experimentally.

InN layers were directly grown on Ge substrate by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PAMBE). The valence band offset (VBO) of wurtzite InN/Ge heterojunction is determined by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). The valence band of Ge is found to be 0.18 +/- 0.04 eV above that of InN and a type-II heterojunction with a conduction band offset (CBO) of similar to 0.16 eV is found. The accurate determination of the VBO and CBO is important for the design of InN/Ge based electronic devices. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.A. All rights reserved.

This article presents the analysis of ultra wide band (UWB) filler designed using a symmetrical three parallel coupled line resonator in low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) medium: The ground plane with an aperture incorporated in it improves the coupling. Based on circuit models, the designed UWB filter has been analyzed, and the results have been confirmed by experiments. The filter has been realized with Dupont LTCC tape DuPont 951 (that has dielectric constant of 7.8). Maximum insertion loss of the experimental filter is 1.5 dB. The group variation over the pass band of the filter is within 0.2 us. Dimensions of the experimental LTCC filter are 20 x 10 x 0.72 mm. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nanowires of Pr0.57Ca0.41Ba0.02MnO3 (PCBM) (diameter similar to 80-90 nm and length similar to 3.5 mu m) were synthesized by a low reaction temperature hydrothermal method. Single-phase nature of the sample was confirmed by XRD experiments. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize the morphology and microstructures of the nanowires. While the bulk PCBM is known to exhibit charge order (CO) below 230 K along with a ferromagnetic transition at 110 K, SQUID measurements on the nanowires of PCBM show that the charge order is completely absent and a ferromagnetic transition occurs at 115 K. However, the magnetization in the nanowires is observed to be less compared to that in the bulk. This observation of the complete 'melting' of the charge order in the PCBM nanowires is particularly significant in view of the observation of only a weakening of the CO in the nanowires of Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3. Electron paramagnetic resonance experiments were also carried out on the PCBM nanowires using an X-band EPR spectrometer. Characteristic differences were observed in the line width of nanowires when compared with that of the bulk.
