A pilot program for Aboriginal people with diabetes on Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, aimed to test the acceptability and impact of using the Flinders model of self-management care planing to improve patient self-management. A community development approach was used to conduct a twelve-month demonstration project. Aboriginal health workers (AHWs) conducted patient-centred, self-management assessment and care planning. Impacts were measured by patient-completed diabetes self-management assessment tool, goal achievement, quality of life and clinical measures at baseline and 12 months. Impact and acceptability were also assessed by semi-structured interviews and focus groups of AHWs. Sixty Aboriginal people with type 2 diabetes stated their main problems as family and social dysfunction, access to services, nutrition and exercise. Problems improved by 12% and goals by 26%, while quality of life scores showed no significant change. Self-management scores improved in five of six domains. Mean HbA1c reduced from 8.74-8.09 and mean blood pressure was unchanged. AHWs found the process acceptable and appropriate for them and their patients. It was concluded that a diabetes self-management program provided by AHWs is acceptable, improves self-management and is seen to be useful by Aboriginal communities. Barriers include lack of preventative health services, social problems and time pressure on staff. Enablers include community concern regarding the prevalence and mortality associated with diabetes.

In current e-health research and development there is a need for a broader understanding of the capabilities and resources required for individuals to use and benefit from e-health services, i.e. their e-health literacy. The aim of
this study was to develop a new conceptualisation of e-health literacy with consideration of the experiences of a wide range of stakeholders and in alignment with current technologies. Concept mapping was used to generate a comprehensive and grounded model of e-health literacy. Concept mapping workshop participants included patients, health professionals and medical informatics experts. Eight workshops, carried out in Denmark and United Kingdom, generated 450 statements, separated into 128 clusters. Through an inductive structured analysis, seven domains were identified: 1. Ability to process information, 2. Engagement in own health, 3. Ability to engage actively with digital services, 4. Feeling safe and in control, 5. Motivation to engage with digital services, 6. Having access to systems that work, and 7. Digital services that suit individual needs. These empirically derived domains form an e-health literacy framework (eHLF) and provide new insights into the user’s ability to understand, access and use e-health technologies. The eHLF offers a framework for evaluating an individual’s or a population’s capacity to understand, use and benefit from technology to promote and maintain their health. Such a framework also provides a potential checklist for the development and improvement of e-health services.

Integrated care has been introduced as a means of improving health outcomes and access to care, and reducing the cost of healthcare. Despite its importance, the integration of oral health into primary care is still an emerging healthcare pathway. This scoping review protocol has been developed and funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research to provide an evidence-based synthesis on a primary oral healthcare approach and its effectiveness in improving oral health outcomes.

This research investigated pedagogical approaches required for the successful inclusion of children and young people living with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. The research applied an Indigenist constructivist qualitative method working with one school community. The development of a National Framework for Achieving Inclusion for Australian Students with FASD demands urgent policy and support for educators to meet the complex learning needs of students with FASD.

In 2008, the U.S. experienced its worst recession since the Great Depression, particularly affecting rural America. The South Carolina Rural Health Research Center used county-level data to examine rural demographic changes over the last decade. Most counties experienced increased levels of poverty between 2000-2010. Rural counties were disproportionately affected. Rural counties experienced a growth in the 65 and older population while losing children. Rural counties gained in racial/ethnic diversity.

The study aimed to characterizing the production of national articles on health, the time frame of the past 10 years, available in the database LILACS and MEDLINE Virtual Health Library that used the Theory of Social Representations in its searches, using as descriptors the words: social representations and health. It is a descriptive study, developed in the context of ibliometrics. Of the 158 units found, 122 were considered and analyzed after removal of those that did not include the stablished inclusion criteria: articles in Portuguese, available in full and that mentioned the expression "social representations", either in the title or abstract. The journal that most published researches about the Theory of Social Representations was Science & Public Health; being the largest number of articles published in 2011. The most frequent area of knowledge covering about the Theory of Social Representations was the Public Health, with the participant group most cited health professionals. Among the data collection instruments used, the semi-structured interview was the most frequent and the kind of qualitative analysis the content analysis was the most common. Noteworthy is the growing interest for the theory and the need for greater criteria in the preparation of abstracts, considering its importance in the spread of scientific production.
