Summary Plants often respond to pathogen or insect attack by inducing the synthesis of toxic compounds such as phytoalexins and glucosinolates (GS). The Arabidopsis mutant pad2-1 has reduced levels of the phytoalexin camalexin and is known for its increased susceptibility to fungal and bacterial pathogens. We found that pad2-1 is also more susceptible to the generalist insect Spodoptera littoralis but not to the specialist Pieris brassicae. The PAD2 gene encodes a gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase that is involved in glutathione (GSH) synthesis, and consequently the pad2-1 mutant contains about 20% of the GSH found in wild-type plants. Lower GSH levels of pad2-1 were correlated with reduced accumulation of the two major indole and aliphatic GSs of Arabidopsis, indolyl-3-methyl-GS and 4-methylsulfinylbutyl-GS, in response to insect feeding. This effect was specific to GSH, was not complemented by treatment of pad2-1 with the strong reducing agent dithiothreitol, and was not observed with the ascorbate-deficient mutant vtc1-1. In contrast to the jasmonate-insensitive mutant coi1-1, expression of insect-regulated and GS biosynthesis genes was not affected in pad2-1. Our data suggest a crucial role for GSH in GS biosynthesis and insect resistance.

The conversation with Cuban-American writer Cristina García explores what it means to be Cuban-American, and reveals how to grow bicultural enriches mainstream American literature. In her novel Dreaming in Cuban (1992), the writer explores the effects of the Castro Revolution from the perspective of Cuban women who remained in Cuba, as well as from the experience of women who emigrated to the United States.

Este artículo pretende introducir el espacio de reflexión crítica que representa la Tribuna señalando los cuatro interrogantes que guían la aportación de los participantes en ella: ¿Cómo se entiende, desde Cataluña, la educación intercultural? ¿Qué fuerzas la están impulsando? ¿Qué fuerzas la frenan? ¿Cuáles son las debilidades del sistema? ¿Hacia dónde habríamos de dirigir nuestros esfuerzos? En el primer apartado se constata una cierta contradicción entre el discurso teórico de los estudiosos y el discurso de la Administración y el de la propia práctica educativa. En el análisis de los modelos educativos encontrados en las aufas se descubre la tendencia hacia una afirmación hegemónica de la cultura del pa(s de acogida. Entre las fuerzas para impulsar la educación intercultural se encuentra prioritariamente la sensibilidad animada por los estudios, movimientos, organizaciones, cursos y escuelas de verano. También el Programa de Educación Compensatoria, el Programa de Educación en la Diversidad» y la misma actitud de la Administración catalana han favorecido la escolarización de las minorías culturales. E/ Plan Interdepartamental de Inmigración constituye en sr un trabajo para coordinar esluerzos y dar un marco global a las respuestas parciales. Ahora bien, la pobreza de origen de un colectivo de inmigrantes y la existencia de una minoría culturalmente diferenciada han determinado una fuerte asociación entre el hecho de la marginación y el hecho de la diversidad cultural. La asimetría cultural impide una verdadera educación intercultural. Nuestros esfuerzos habrían de dirigirse a crear condiciones para un proyecto educativo intercultural, centrarnos fundamentalmente en la formación del profesorado y en concreto en la revisión de su forma de enseñanza-aprendizaje, estilo de comunicación y tipo de disciplina, esenciales para crear una auténtica educación intercultural.

Résumé¦L'Embrochage Centro-Médullaire Elastique Stable (ECMES) est le traitement de choix des fractures du fémur chez l'enfant en âge scolaire. Il est pratiqué avec succès chez le jeune enfant, alors que l'Immobilisation par Plâtre (IP) était la technique la plus largement utilisée jusque-là.¦Méthode : Une analyse rétrospective comparant deux groupes d'enfants âgés de 1 à 4 ans avec des fractures diaphysaires du fémur a été effectuée. Deux hôpitaux universitaires, utilisant chacun une méthode de traitement spécifique, ont participé à cette étude : l'IP dans le groupe I (Bâle, Suisse) et l'ECMES dans le groupe II (Lausanne, Suisse).¦Résultats : Le groupe I inclue 19 enfants avec un âge médian de 26 mois (12-46 mois). La médiane du séjour hospitalier est de 1 jour (0-5 jours) et le plâtre est laissé en place pour une durée médiane de 21 jours (12-29 jours). Une anesthésie générale a été nécessaire chez 6 enfants et une sédation chez 4. Des lésions cutanées secondaires au plâtre sont apparues chez 2 enfants (10.5%). La médiane de la durée du suivi est de 114 mois (37-171 mois). Aucun défaut de consolidation n'est à déplorer. Le groupe II inclue 27 enfants avec un âge médian de 38.4 mois (18.7-46.7 mois). La médiane du séjour hospitalier est de 4 jours (1-13 jours). Tous les enfants ont nécessité une anesthésie générale pour la mise en place et pour le retrait des broches. La mobilisation et la mise en charge complète du membre ont été permises respectivement à une médiane de 2 jours (1-10 jours) et 7 jours (1-30 jours) postopératoires. Une complication sous la forme d'une extériorisation à la peau d'une broche a été notée chez 3 enfants (11%). La médiane de la durée du suivi et de 16.5 mois (8-172 mois). Aucun défaut de consolidation n'est à déplorer.¦Conclusion : Les jeunes enfants présentant une fracture diaphysaire du fémur, traité pas IP ou ECMES, ont des résultats favorables et des taux de complications similaires. L'ECMES permet une mobilisation et une charge complète sur le membre fracturé plus rapide. Mais comparé à l'IP, l'ECMES requiert un plus grand nombre d'anesthésies générales. Chez un enfant d'âge préscolaire présentant une fracture diaphysaire du fémur, l'application immédiate d'un plâtre par une équipe orthopédique pédiatrique entraînée à la mise en place de plâtre chez l'enfant, permet un retour à domicile rapide et un taux de complication bas.

This paper looks at the contribution of political leaders to enhance citizens education and investigate how the educational attainment of the population is affected while a leader with higher education remains in office. For this purpose, we consider educational transitions of political leaders in office and find that the educational attainment of population increases when a more educated leader remains in office. Furthermore, we also observe that the educational attainment of the population is negatively impacted when a country transitions from an educated leader to a less educated one. This result may help to explain the previous finding that more educated political leaders favor economic growth. BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) secondary to megadolichobasilar artery (MBA) compression is considerably difficult to manage surgically. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the safety/efficacy of Gamma Knife surgery (GKS) in this special group of patients. METHODS: Between July 1992 and November 2010, 29 patients with >1 year of follow-up presenting with MBA compression were treated with GKS at Timone University Hospital. Radiosurgery was performed using a Gamma Knife (model B, C or Perfexion). A single 4-mm isocenter was positioned in the cisternal portion of the trigeminal nerve at a median distance of 9.1 mm (range: 6-18.2 mm) from the emergence. RESULTS: The median follow-up period was 46.1 months (range: 12.9-157.9 months). Initially, all patients (100%) were pain free; the average time to complete pain relief was 13.5 days (range: 0-240 days). Their actuarial probability of remaining pain free without medication at 0.5, 1 and 2 years was 93.1, 79.3 and 75.7%, respectively, and remained stable until 13 years after treatment. The actuarial probability of hypoesthesia onset at 6 months was 4.3%; at 1 year it reached 13% and remained stable until 13 years after treatment. CONCLUSIONS: GKS proved to be reasonably safe and effective on a long-term basis as a first- and/or second-line surgical treatment for TN due to MBA compression.

PURPOSE: Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) expand because of aortic wall destruction. Enrichment in Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells (VSMCs) stabilizes expanding AAAs in rats. Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) can differentiate into VSMCs. We have tested the hypothesis that bone marrow-derived MSCs (BM-MSCs) stabilizes AAAs in a rat model. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Rat Fischer 344 BM-MSCs were isolated by plastic adhesion and seeded endovascularly in experimental AAAs using xenograft obtained from guinea pig. Culture medium without cells was used as control group. The main criteria was the variation of the aortic diameter at one week and four weeks. We evaluated the impact of cells seeding on inflammatory response by immunohistochemistry combined with RT-PCR on MMP9 and TIMP1 at one week. We evaluated the healing process by immunohistochemistry at 4 weeks. RESULTS: The endovascular seeding of BM-MSCs decreased AAA diameter expansion more powerfully than VSMCs or culture medium infusion (6.5% ± 9.7, 25.5% ± 17.2 and 53.4% ± 14.4; p = .007, respectively). This result was sustained at 4 weeks. BM-MSCs decreased expression of MMP-9 and infiltration by macrophages (4.7 ± 2.3 vs. 14.6 ± 6.4 mm(2) respectively; p = .015), increased Tissue Inhibitor Metallo Proteinase-1 (TIMP-1), compared to culture medium infusion. BM-MSCs induced formation of a neo-aortic tissue rich in SM-alpha active positive cells (22.2 ± 2.7 vs. 115.6 ± 30.4 cells/surface units, p = .007) surrounded by a dense collagen and elastin network covered by luminal endothelial cells. CONCLUSIONS: We have shown in this rat model of AAA that BM-MSCs exert a specialized function in arterial regeneration that transcends that of mature mesenchymal cells. Our observation identifies a population of cells easy to isolate and to expand for therapeutic interventions based on catheter-driven cell therapy.
