Resumo:
The BDI architecture, where agents are modelled based on their beliefs, desires and intentions, provides a practical approach to develop large scale systems. However, it is not well suited to model complex Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems pervaded by uncertainty. In this paper we address this issue by extending the operational semantics of Can(Plan) into Can(Plan)+. We start by modelling the beliefs of an agent as a set of epistemic states where each state, possibly using a different representation, models part of the agent's beliefs. These epistemic states are stratified to make them commensurable and to reason about the uncertain beliefs of the agent. The syntax and semantics of a BDI agent are extended accordingly and we identify fragments with computationally efficient semantics. Finally, we examine how primitive actions are affected by uncertainty and we define an appropriate form of lookahead planning.

While video surveillance systems have become ubiquitous in our daily lives, they have introduced concerns over privacy invasion. Recent research to address these privacy issues includes a focus on privacy region protection, whereby existing video scrambling techniques are applied to specific regions of interest (ROI) in a video while the background is left unchanged. Most previous work in this area has only focussed on encrypting the sign bits of nonzero coefficients in the privacy region, which produces a relatively weak scrambling effect. In this paper, to enhance the scrambling effect for privacy protection, it is proposed to encrypt the intra prediction modes (IPM) in addition to the sign bits of nonzero coefficients (SNC) within the privacy region. A major issue with utilising encryption of IPM is that drift error is introduced outside the region of interest. Therefore, a re-encoding method, which is integrated with the encryption of IPM, is also proposed to remove drift error. Compared with a previous technique that uses encryption of IPM, the proposed re-encoding method offers savings in the bitrate overhead while completely removing the drift error. Experimental results and analysis based on H.264/AVC were carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed methods. In addition, a spiral binary mask mechanism is proposed that can reduce the bitrate overhead incurred by flagging the position of the privacy region. A definition of the syntax structure for the spiral binary mask is given. As a result of the proposed techniques, the privacy regions in a video sequence can be effectively protected by the enhanced scrambling effect with no drift error and a lower bitrate overhead.

It is acknowledged that one of the consequences of the ageing process is cognitive decline, which leads to an increase in the incidence of illnesses such as dementia. This has become ever more relevant due to the projected increase in the ageing demographic. Dementia affects visuo-spatial perception, causing difficulty with wayfinding, even during the early stages of the disease. The literature widely recognises the physical environment’s role in alleviating symptoms of dementia and improving quality of life for residents. It also identifies the lack of available housing options for older people with dementia and consequently the current stock is ill-equipped to provide adequate support.
Recent statistics indicate that 80% of those residing in nursing or residential care homes have some form of dementia or severe memory problems. The shift towards institutional care settings, the need for specialist support and care, places a greater impetus on the need for a person-centred approach to tackle issues related to wayfinding and dementia.
This thesis therefore aims to improve design for dementia in nursing and residential care settings in the context of Northern Ireland. This will be undertaken in order to provide a better understanding of how people with dementia experience the physical environment and to highlight features of the design that assist with wayfinding. Currently there are limited guidelines on design for dementia, meaning that many of these are theoretical, anecdotal and not definitive. Hence a greater verification to address the less recognised design issues is required. This is intended to ultimately improve quality of life, wellbeing, independence and uphold the dignity of people with dementia living in nursing or residential care homes.
The research design uses a mixed methods approach. A thorough preparation and consideration of ethical issues informed the methodology. The various facets were also trialled and piloted to identify any ethical, technological, methodological, data collection and analysis issues. The protocol was then amended to improve or resolve any of the aforementioned issues. Initially a questionnaire based on leading design recommendations was conducted with home managers. Semi-structured interviews were developed from this and conducted with staff and resident’s next of kin. An evidence-based approach was used to design a study which used ethnographic methods, including a wayfinding task. This followed a repeated measures design which would be used to actively engage residents with dementia in the research. Complementary to the wayfinding task, conversational and semi-structured interviews were used to promote dialogue and direct responses with the person with dementia. In addition to this, Space Syntax methodologies were used to examine the physical properties of the architectural layout. This was then cross-examined with interview responses and data from the wayfinding tasks.
A number of plan typologies were identified and were determined as synonymous with decision point types which needed to be made during the walks. The empirical work enabled the synthesis of environmental features which support wayfinding.
Results indicate that particular environmental features are associated with improved performance on the wayfinding tasks. By enhancing design for dementia, through identifying the attributes, challenges with wayfinding may be overcome and the benefits of the physical environment can be seen to promote wellbeing.
The implications of this work mean that the environmental features which have been highlighted from the project can be used to inform guidelines, thus adding to existing knowledge. Future work would involve the dissemination of this information and the potential for it to be made into design standards or regulations which champion design for dementia. These would increase awareness for designers and stakeholders undertaking new projects, extensions or refurbishments.
A person-centred, evidence-based design was emphasised throughout the project which guaranteed an in-depth study. There were limitations due to the available resources, time and funding. Future research would involve testing the identified environmental features within a specific environment to enable measured observation of improvements.

O presente trabalho propõe-se abordar os problemas mais significativos da improvisação da música contemporânea. Tendo como foco principal a procura do pensamento do improvisador durante a performance, assim como, a exploração dos diferentes constrangimentos que regulam a abertura da improvisação, a tese é composta por duas partes: na primeira apresenta-se os modelos teóricos da improvisação e suas principais características, assim como, uma reflexão sobre o papel da memória no processo de criação no decorrer da performance. Explora-se ainda a temática da organização do discurso musical improvisado em relação aos problemas da Estrutura e do controlo da Forma. A partir dos pressupostos teóricos, apresenta-se na segunda parte, uma vasta compilação de performances improvisadas desenvolvidas sobre os diferentes constrangimentos da criação em tempo real, explorando-se os vários conceitos de abertura. Desenvolve-se ainda um estudo empírico baseado na retrospecção da improvisação de onze instrumentistas sobre um motivo comum, no sentido de recolher uma compilação dos termos e dos processos mais usados na sintaxe da improvisação, representativos do pensamento do improvisador. Os dados obtidos permitem concluir que o comportamento da improvisação assenta maioritariamente num discurso Associativo, fortemente apoiado na biografia musical do improvisador e no controlo da Memória. Conclui-se também que a improvisação varia consoante a exposição do processo às diferentes categorias de abertura.

O presente estudo analisa o papel das atividades de Sensibilização à Diversidade Linguística (SDL) no desenvolvimento da competência linguístico-comunicativa de crianças em idade pré-escolar. Para tal, baseados em pressupostos teóricos divulgados em diferentes estudos científicos realizados com crianças que tiveram contacto com várias línguas quer em ambiente familiar quer em contexto escolar, concebemos um Projeto de Intervenção (PI) constituído por uma variedade de atividades lúdicas multilingues impulsionadoras da competência linguístico-comunicativa infantil, no domínio da sintaxe, que aplicámos a um grupo de crianças de 5 anos num Jardim de Infância (JI) português. Antes do desenvolvimento do projeto administrámos um teste de linguagem, especialmente desenhado para avaliar o desenvolvimento da linguagem infantil, assim como elaborámos um relatório de avaliação da linguagem das crianças envolvidas neste estudo. Em paralelo, constituímos um grupo de controlo onde aplicámos o mesmo teste e realizámos o mesmo relatório para compararmos os resultados com as prestações do grupo experimental. Recorremos ainda a uma escala de envolvimento para verificar os graus de implicação nas atividades de SDL propostas e assim tentarmos identificar o seu grau de influência nas crianças do grupo experimental. Os resultados parecem indicar que as atividades de SDL realizadas com as crianças do grupo experimental tiveram influência positiva nas capacidades linguístico-comunicativas das crianças, tendo em conta o nível de envolvimento e os resultados da análise. Pensamos que as atividades do nosso PI apresentam potencialidades na criação de oportunidades para o treino e o desenvolvimento da competência linguístico-comunicativa das crianças em idade préescolar, acreditando que a conjugação das atividades de SDL com as demais atividades de linguagem geralmente realizadas no JI pelos educadores representa uma mais-valia na constituição de oportunidades de trabalho da linguagem, nas suas várias vertentes, na educação de infância. Compreende-se a importância de incluir abordagens plurais, de tipo SDL, na educação de infância, ajudando na construção de uma educação para a diversidade, através da integração de várias línguas e culturas, e contribuindo assim para a formação de um indivíduo preparado para uma sociedade multilingue e multicultural.

The Cappadocian variety of Ulaghátsh is unique among the Greek-speaking world in having lost the inherited preposition ‘se’. The innovation is found with both locative and allative uses and has af-ected both syntactic contexts in which ‘se’ was originally found, that is, as a simple preposition (1) and as the left-occurring member of circumpositions of the type ‘se’ + NP + spatial adverb (2). ART.DEF.SG.ACC cushion.SG.ACC behind ‘he went into the houses and hid behind the cushions’ (Dawkins 1916: 348) In this paper, we set out to provide (a) a diachronic account of the loss of ‘se’ in Asia Minor Greek, and (b) a synchronic analysis of its ramifications for the encoding of the semantic and grammatical functions it had prior to its loss. The diachronic development of ‘se’ is traced by comparing the Ulaghátsh data with those obtained from Cappadocian varieties that have neither lost it nor do they show signs of losing it and, crucially, also from varieties in which ‘se’ is in the process of being lost. The comparative analysis shows that the loss first became manifest in circumpositions in which ‘se’ was preposed to the complement to which in turn a wide range of adverbs expressing topological relations were postposed (émi sa qonáca mésa > émi ta qonáca mésa). This finding is accounted for in terms of Sinha and Kuteva’s (1995) distributed spatial semantics framework, which accepts that the elements involved in the constructions under investigation—the verb (émi), ‘se’ and the spatial adverb (mésa)—all contribute to the expression of the spatial relational meaning but with differences in weighting. Of the three, ‘eis’ made the most minimal contribution, the bulk of it being distributed over the verb and the adverb. This allowed for it to be optionally dropped from circumpositions, a stage attested in Phlo-tá Cappadocian and Silliot, and to be later completely abandoned, originally in allative and subsequently in locative contexts (earlier: évɣan so qonáq > évɣan to qonáq; later: so meidán en ávʝa > to meidán en ávʝa). The earlier loss in allative contexts is also dealt with in distributed semantics terms as verbs of motion such as έβγαν are semantically more loaded than vacuous verbs like the copula and therefore the preposition could be left out in the former context more easily than in the latter. The analysis also addresses the possibility that the loss of ‘se’ may ultimately originate in substandard forms of Medieval Greek, which according to Tachibana (1994) displayed SPATIAL ADVERB + NP constructions. Applying the semantic map model (Croft 2003, Haspelmath 2003), the synchronic analysis of the varieties that retain ‘se’ reveals that—like many other allative markers crosslinguistically—it displays a pattern of multifunctionality in expressing nine different functions (among others allative, locative, recipient, addressee, experiencer), which can be mapped against four domains, viz. the spatiotemporal, the social, the mental and the logicotextual (cf. Rice & Kabata 2007). In Ulaghátsh Cappadocian, none of these functions is overtly marked as such. In cases like (1), the intended spatial relational meaning is arrived at through the combination of the syntax and the inherent semantics of the verb and the zero-marked NP as well as from the context. In environments of the type exemplified by (2), the adverb contributes further to the correct interpretation. The analysis additionally shows that, despite the loss of ‘se’, Ulaghátsh patterns with all other Cappadocian varieties in one important aspect: Goal and Location are expressed similarly (by zero in Ulaghátsh, by ‘se’ in the other varieties) whereas Source is being kept distinct (expressed by ‘apó’ in all varieties). Goal-Location polysemy is very common across the world’s languages and, most crucially, prevails over other possible polysemies in the tripartite distinction Source—Location—Goal (Lestrade 2010, Nikitina 2009). Taking into account this empirical observation, our findings suggest that the reor-anisation of spatial systems can have a local effect—in our case the loss of a member of the prepositional paradigm—but will keep the original global picture intact, thus conforming to crosslinguistically robust tendencies. In this article I will analyse anaphoric references in German texts and their transaltion into Portuguese. I will take as main corpus Heinrich Böll's novel Haus ohne Hüter and its translation into Portuguese by Jorge Rosa with the title Casa Indefesa. I will concentrate on the use of personal pronouns and possessives in references to both people and objects in source text and target text and I will present patterns of symmetries and asymmetries. I will claim that asymmetries in the translation of such anaphoric references can be accounted for mainly by differences in the pronominal systems and verbal systems of both languages and by differences in the way each language marks theme/topic continuity/discontinuity in discourse. Issues related to style and the translation of anaphors will also be addressed. I will finally raise some questions related to ambiguous references which can not be solved within the scope of syntax or semantics, thus requiring pragmatic interpretation based on cultural knowledge/world knowledge.

This document is a survey in the research area of User Modeling (UM) for the specific field of Adaptive Learning. The aims of this document are: To define what it is a User Model; To present existing and well known User Models; To analyze the existent standards related with UM; To compare existing systems. In the scientific area of User Modeling (UM), numerous research and developed systems already seem to promise good results, but some experimentation and implementation are still necessary to conclude about the utility of the UM. That is, the experimentation and implementation of these systems are still very scarce to determine the utility of some of the referred applications. At present, the Student Modeling research goes in the direction to make possible reuse a student model in different systems. The standards are more and more relevant for this effect, allowing systems communicate and to share data, components and structures, at syntax and semantic level, even if most of them still only allow syntax integration.

Within the pedagogical community, Serious Games have arisen as a viable alternative to traditional course-based learning materials. Until now, they have been based strictly on software solutions. Meanwhile, research into Remote Laboratories has shown that they are a viable, low-cost solution for experimentation in an engineering context, providing uninterrupted access, low-maintenance requirements, and a heightened sense of reality when compared to simulations. This paper will propose a solution where both approaches are combined to deliver a Remote Laboratory-based Serious Game for use in engineering and school education. The platform for this system is the WebLab-Deusto Framework, already well-tested within the remote laboratory context, and based on open standards. The laboratory allows users to control a mobile robot in a labyrinth environment and take part in an interactive game where they must locate and correctly answer several questions, the subject of which can be adapted to educators' needs. It also integrates the Google Blockly graphical programming language, allowing students to learn basic programming and logic principles without needing to understand complex syntax.

Este trabalho pretende, a partir da análise de textos literários e não literários do português antigo, incluídos no Corpus Informatizado do Português Medieval (CLUNL/FCSH-UNL), descrever e interpretar a distribuição sintática e as propriedades do particípio presente no português antigo, verificando semelhanças e diferenças com outras formas não finitas, principalmente o gerúndio. Procurou-se averiguar o que caracteriza as formas de particípio presente do português antigo e do português europeu contemporâneo e o que as distingue de outras formas não finitas do verbo, no que diz respeito aos contextos em que ocorrem, mas também quanto ao seu funcionamento. Assim, analisando mais detalhadamente as orações em que estes particípios ocorrem com função verbal, investigaram-se algumas das suas propriedades internas (legitimação de sujeitos plenos, identificação e legitimação de sujeitos nulos, ordem de palavras), de modo a poder explicar o seu funcionamento e estrutura. No português antigo, as formas de particípio presente tinham características distintas das do português contemporâneo. No português de hoje, as formas terminadas em -nte, subsistem apenas como nomes (estudante, presidente, pedinte) e adjetivos (minguante, cadente, seguinte). O uso verbal destas formas desapareceu, tendo sido substituído por outras formas não finitas, nomeadamente o gerúndio e o infinitivo. Quando ainda mantinha o seu funcionamento verbal, o particípio presente ocorria nos mesmos contextos sintáticos em que encontramos outras formas não finitas, principalmente o gerúndio. Estas duas formas pareciam funcionar como variantes livres, tendo depois o gerúndio substituído a forma participial na maioria dos contextos. A análise dos dados e a comparação efetuada com as formas de gerúndio que ocorrem no mesmo contexto (adjunção adverbial) permitiram concluir que as estruturas com particípio do português se mostram mais defetivas (ocorrem sem conector, não há casos de negação própria e não há particípios presentes compostos) do que as gerundivas. No entanto, essa defetividade não parece dever-se à própria forma de particípio, pois foi possível encontrar particípios presentes como predicados principais.

The present dissertation intends to study passives in Capeverdean. I argue that Capeverdean have eventive passives with specific morphology, postverbal morphemes, -du and -da, which affix to the verb to form passives and interact with the TMA morphemes available in the language in the same way as in the active voice. I also show that Capeverdean only allows short passives. However, this study demonstrates that the by-phrase, although not expressed phonologically, is implicit and can be tracked through instrumentals and Agent-oriented adverbs. In order to account for this specific property of Capeverdean passives, I assume the existence of a Voice head which introduces the external argument in all finite sentences in Capeverdean, except in unaccusatives, following proposals from Marantz (1984), Kratzer (1996), Sailor & Ahn (2010), Pratas (2014). I also assume that this Voice head is subject to a Doubly Filled Comp Filter, similar to what is proposed in Koopman (1997), which determines that either heads or specifiers can be overt, never both. In the case of passives, I propose that external argument is in Spec,Voice and the passive morphology is lexicalized in Voice0 and that while Spec,Voice is silent, Voice0 is not. This configuration can be explained if it is assumed, following Costa & Martins (2004), that in Capeverdean passives Voice0 is a strong functional head, thus requiring visibility at PF. This restriction, combined with the Doubly Filled Comp filter, imposes that Spec,Voice is silent.
