On the basis of the spin and valence state equilibria and superexchange interaction of the various cobalt ions in LaCoO3, an approximate semiempirical formula has been proposed and used to calculate magnetic susceptibilities of LaCoO3 over a wide temperature range (100-1200 K). The results indicate that there are thermodynamic equilibria between the low spin state Co(III) (t2g6e(g)0) ion, the high spin state Co3+ (t2g4e(g)2) ion, the Co(II) (t2g6e(g)1) ion and the Co(IV) (t2g5e(g)0) ion in LaCoO3. The energy difference between the low spin state Co(III) and the high spin state Co3+ is about 0.006 eV. The content of the low spin state Co(III) ion is predominant in LaCoO3 and the content of the high spin state Co3+ ion varies with temperature, reaching a maximum at about 350 K, then decreasing gradually with increasing temperature. At low temperature the contents of the Co(II) ion and the Co(IV) ion in LaCoO3 are negligible, while above 200 K the contents of both the Co(II) ion and the Co(IV) ion increase with increasing temperature; however, the content of the Co(II) ion always is larger than that of the Co(IV) ion at any temperature. These calculated results are in good agreement with experimental results of the Mossbauer effect, magnetic susceptibility and electrical conductivity of LaCoO3.

Blends of crystallizable poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVPy) were studied by C-13 cross-polarization/magic angle spinning (CP/MAS) n.m.r. and d.s.c. The C-13 CP/MAS spectra show that the blends were miscible on a molecular level over the whole composition range studied, and that the intramolecular hydrogen bonds of PVA were broken and intermolecular hydrogen bonds between PVA and PVPy formed when the two polymers were mixed. The results of a spin-lattice relaxation study indicate that blending of the two polymers reduced the average intermolecular distance and molecular motion of each component, even in the miscible amorphous phase, and that addition of PVPy into PVA has a definite effect on the crystallinity of PVA in the blends over the whole composition range, yet there is still detectable crystallinity even when the PVPy content is as high as 80 wt%. These results are consistent with those obtained from d.s.c. studies.

An extended Goldman-Shen pulse sequence was used to observe indirectly the proton spin diffusion in the blends of polystyrene (PS) with poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxides) (PPO). The results indicate that the average distance between PS and PPO is less than 5 angstrom in the intimately mixed phase, but there are heterogeneous domains on a 100-angstrom scale. The data of spin relaxation of carbons, T1(C), for homopolymers and their blends suggest that there is a strong pi-pi electron conjugation interaction between the aromatic rings of PS and those of PPO, while the aromatic rings of PPO drive the aromatic rings of PS to move cooperatively. It is the cooperative motion that markedly improves the impact strength of PS.

The photodissociation of CH2BrCH2Cl at 266 nm has been investigated on the universal crossed molecular beam machine. The primary dissociation step leads exclusively to the formation of CH2CH2Cl radicals and Br atoms in the electronic ground state as well as in the spin-orbit excited state, with a branching ratio 2 +/- 1:8 +/- 1. Photofragment total c.m. translational energy distribution P(E-t) has been obtained and about 64% of the available energy is partitioned into translational energy for Br channel and about 28.5% of the available energy is partitioned into translational energy for Br* channel. The anisotropy parameters are determined to be beta(Br*) = 0.8 +/- 0.2 and beta(Br) = -0.6 +/- 0.2, respectively. Some CH2CH2Cl radicals with large internal excitation (corresponding to formation of ground state Br channel) may undergo secondary dissociation to form CH2CH2 +/- Cl. The experimental results are discussed in terms of a model that involves the initial excitation of two repulsive electronic states: one from an parallel transition to the (3)Q(0) state, and the other from a perpendicular transition to the (3)Q(1), (1)Q states. A quantum Monte Carlo algorithm is constructed starting from the standard perturbation expansion in the interaction representation. The resulting configuration space is strongly related to that of the Stochastic Series Expansion (SSE) method, which is based on a direct power series expansion of exp(-beta*H). Sampling procedures previously developed for the SSE method can therefore be used also in the interaction representation formulation. The new method is first tested on the S=1/2 Heisenberg chain. Then, as an application to a model of great current interest, a Heisenberg chain including phonon degrees of freedom is studied. Einstein phonons are coupled to the spins via a linear modulation of the nearest-neighbor exchange. The simulation algorithm is implemented in the phonon occupation number basis, without Hilbert space truncations, and is exact. Results are presented for the magnetic properties of the system in a wide temperature regime, including the T-->0 limit where the chain undergoes a spin-Peierls transition. Some aspects of the phonon dynamics are also discussed. The results suggest that the effects of dynamic phonons in spin-Peierls compounds such as GeCuO3 and NaV2O5 must be included in order to obtain a correct quantitative description of their magnetic properties, both above and below the dimerization temperature.

Duality is investigated for higher spin (s ≥ 2), free, massless, bosonic gauge fields. We show how the dual formulations can be derived from a common "parent", first-order action. This goes beyond most of the previous treatments where higher-spin duality was investigated at the level of the equations of motion only. In D = 4 spacetime dimensions, the dual theories turn out to be described by the same Pauli-Fierz (s = 2) or Fronsdal (s ≥ 3) action (as it is the case for spin 1). In the particular s = 2 D = 5 case, the Pauli-Fierz action and the Curtright action are shown to be related through duality. A crucial ingredient of the analysis is given by the first-order, gauge-like, reformulation of higher spin theories due to Vasiliev. © SISSA/ISAS 2003.

It is known that the exact density functional must give ground-state energies that are piecewise linear as a function of electron number. In this work we prove that this is also true for the lowest-energy excited states of different spin or spatial symmetry. This has three important consequences for chemical applications: the ground state of a molecule must correspond to the state with the maximum highest-occupied-molecular-orbital energy, minimum lowest-unoccupied-molecular-orbital energy, and maximum chemical hardness. The beryllium, carbon, and vanadium atoms, as well as the CH(2) and C(3)H(3) molecules are considered as illustrative examples. Our result also directly and rigorously connects the ionization potential and electron affinity to the stability of spin states.

The measured angular differential cross section (DCS) for the elastic scattering of electrons from Ar+(3s2 3p5 2P) at the collision energy of 16 eV is presented. By solving the Hartree-Fock equations, we calculate the corresponding theoretical DCS including the coupling between the orbital angular momenta and spin of the incident electron and those of the target ion and also relaxation effects. Since the collision energy is above one inelastic threshold for the transition 3s2 3p5 2P–3s 3p6 2S, we consider the effects on the DCS of inelastic absorption processes and elastic resonances. The measurements deviate significantly from the Rutherford cross section over the full angular range observed, especially in the region of a deep minimum centered at approximately 75°. Our theory and an uncoupled, unrelaxed method using a local, spherically symmetric potential by Manson [Phys. Rev. 182, 97 (1969)] both reproduce the overall shape of the measured DCS, although the coupled Hartree-Fock approach describes the depth of the minimum more accurately. The minimum is shallower in the present theory owing to our lower average value for the d-wave non-Coulomb phase shift s2, which is due to the high sensitivity of s2 to the different scattering potentials used in the two models. The present measurements and calculations therefore show the importance of including coupling and relaxation effects when accurately modeling electron-ion collisions. The phase shifts obtained by fitting to the measurements are compared with the values of Manson and the present method.

The Wigner transition in a jellium model of cylindrical nanowires has been investigated by density-functional computations using the local spin-density approximation. A wide range of background densities rho(b) has been explored from the nearly ideal metallic regime (r(s)=[3/4 pi rho(b)](1/3)=1) to the high correlation limit (r(s)=100). Computations have been performed using an unconstrained plane wave expansion for the Kohn-Sham orbitals and a large simulation cell with up to 480 electrons. The electron and spin distributions retain the cylindrical symmetry of the Hamiltonian at high density, while electron localization and spin polarization arise nearly simultaneously in low-density wires (r(s)similar to 30). At sufficiently low density (r(s)>= 40), the ground-state electron distribution is the superposition of well defined and nearly disjoint droplets, whose charge and spin densities integrate almost exactly to one electron and 1/2 mu(B), respectively. Droplets are arranged on radial shells and define a distorted lattice whose structure is intermediate between bcc and fcc. Dislocations and grain boundaries are apparent in the droplets' configuration found by our simulations. Our computations aim at modeling the behavior of experimental low-carried density systems made of lightly doped semiconductor nanostructures or conducting polymers.

The physical effect of high concentrations of reversibly dissolved SO2 on [C(2)mim][NTf2] was examined using cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and ESR spectroscopy. Cyclic voltammetry of the oxidation of solutions of ferrocene, N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine (TMPD), and chloride in the room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesufonyl)imide ([C(2)mim][NTf2]) reveals an increase in limiting current of each species corresponding to the addition of increasing concentrations of sulfur dioxide. Quantitative chronoamperometry reveals an increase in each species' diffusion coefficient with SO2 concentration. When chronoamperometric data were obtained for ferrocene in [C(2)mim][NTf2] at a range of temperatures, the translational diffusion activation energy (29.0 +/- 0.5 kJ mol(-1)) was found to be in good agreement with previous studies. Adding SO2 results in apparent near-activationless translational diffusion. A significant decrease in the activation energy of rotational diffusion with the SO2 saturation of a 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxyl (TEMPO) solution in [C(2)mim][NTf2] (29.9 +/- 2.0 to 7.7 +/- 5.3 kJ mol(-1)) was observed using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The reversible physical absorption Of SO2 by [C(2)mim][NTf2] should have no adverse effect on the ability of that ionic liquid to be employed as a solvent in an electrochemical gas sensor, and it is possible that the SO2-mediated reduction of RTIL viscosity could have intrinsic utility.

The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond has shown great promise for quantum information due to the ease of initializing the qubit and of reading out its state. Here we show the leading mechanism for these effects gives results opposite from experiment; instead both must rely on new physics. Furthermore, NV centers fabricated in nanometer-sized diamond clusters are stable, motivating a bottom-up qubit approach, with the possibility of quite different optical properties to bulk.

We present an observation of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect for the planetary system WASP-3. Radial velocity measurements were made during transit using the SOPHIE spectrograph at the 1.93-m telescope at Haute-Provence Observatory. The shape of the effect shows that the sky-projected angle between the stellar rotation axis and planetary orbital axis (?) is small and consistent with zero within . WASP-3b joins the ~two-thirds of planets with measured spin-orbit angles that are well aligned and are thought to have undergone a dynamically gentle migration process such as planet-disc interactions. We find a systematic effect which leads to an anomalously high determination of the projected stellar rotational velocity (vsini = 19.6+2.2-2.1kms-1) compared to the value found from spectroscopic line broadening (vsini = 13.4 +/- 1.5kms-1). This is thought to be caused by a discrepancy in the assumptions made in the extraction and modelling of the data. Using a model developed by Hirano et al. designed to address this issue, we find vsini to be consistent with the value obtained from spectroscopic broadening measurements (vsini = 15.7+1.4-1.3kms-1).

Context. Several competing scenarios for planetary-system formation and evolution seek to explain how hot Jupiters came to be so close to their parent stars. Most planetary parameters evolve with time, making it hard to distinguish between models. The obliquity of an orbit with respect to the stellar rotation axis is thought to be more stable than other parameters such as eccentricity. Most planets, to date, appear aligned with the stellar rotation axis; the few misaligned planets so far detected are massive (> 2 MJ). Aims: Our goal is to measure the degree of alignment between planetary orbits and stellar spin axes, to search for potential correlations with eccentricity or other planetary parameters and to measure long term radial velocity variability indicating the presence of other bodies in the system. Methods: For transiting planets, the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect allows the measurement of the sky-projected angle ß between the stellar rotation axis and a planet's orbital axis. Using the HARPS spectrograph, we observed the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect for six transiting hot Jupiters found by the WASP consortium. We combine these with long term radial velocity measurements obtained with CORALIE. We used a combined analysis of photometry and radial velocities, fitting model parameters with the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. After obtaining ß we attempt to statistically determine the distribution of the real spin-orbit angle ?. Results: We found that three of our targets have ß above 90°: WASP-2b: ß = 153°+11-15, WASP-15b: ß = 139.6°+5.2-4.3 and WASP-17b: ß = 148.5°+5.1-4.2; the other three (WASP-4b, WASP-5b and WASP-18b) have angles compatible with 0°. We find no dependence between the misaligned angle and planet mass nor with any other planetary parameter. All six orbits are close to circular, with only one firm detection of eccentricity e = 0.00848+0.00085-0.00095 in WASP-18b. No long-term radial acceleration was detected for any of the targets. Combining all previous 20 measurements of ß and our six and transforming them into a distribution of ? we find that between about 45 and 85% of hot Jupiters have ? > 30°. Conclusions: Most hot Jupiters are misaligned, with a large variety of spin-orbit angles. We find observations and predictions using the Kozai mechanism match well. If these observational facts are confirmed in the future, we may then conclude that most hot Jupiters are formed from a dynamical and tidal origin without the necessity to use type I or II migration. At present, standard disc migration cannot explain the observations without invoking at least another additional process.
