We discover that hexagonal holmium copper titanate (Ho2CuTiO6), has a unique and highly desirable combination of high dielectric constant, low losses, very small temperature coefficient, and low frequency dependence. Our first-principles calculations indicate that these exceptional properties result from a size-difference at the Cu/Ti B-site that suppresses the expected ferroelectric transition, combined with the dominance of intermediate-frequency polar vibrational modes in the dielectric response. Our results suggest that the use of such B-site disorder in alloys of hexagonal transition-metal oxides should generally result in similar robust dielectrics.

We investigate the effects of new physics scenarios containing a high mass vector resonance on top pair production at the LHC, using the polarization of the produced top. In particular we use kinematic distributions of the secondary lepton coming from top decay, which depends on top polarization, as it has been shown that the angular distribution of the decay lepton is insensitive to the anomalous tbW vertex and hence is a pure probe of new physics in top quark production. Spin sensitive variables involving the decay lepton are used to probe top polarization. Some sensitivity is found for the new couplings of the top.

Sulfotransferases (SULTs) and UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs) are important detoxification enzymes and they contribute to bioavailability and elimination of many drugs. SULT1A3 is an extrahepatic enzyme responsible for the sulfonation of dopamine, which is often used as its probe substrate. A new method for analyzing dopamine-3-O-sulfate and dopamine-4-O-sulfate by high-performance liquid chromatography was developed and the enzyme kinetic parameters for their formation were determined using purified recombinant human SULT1A3. The results show that SULT1A3 strongly favors the 3-hydroxy group of dopamine, which indicates that it may be the major enzyme responsible for the difference between the circulating levels of dopamine sulfates in human blood. All 19 known human UGTs were expressed as recombinant enzymes in baculovirus infected insect cells and their activities toward dopamine and estradiol were studied. UGT1A10 was identified as the only UGT capable of dopamine glucuronidation at a substantial level. The results were supported by studies with human intestinal and liver microsomes. The affinity was low indicating that UGT1A10 is not an important enzyme in dopamine metabolism in vivo. Despite the low affinity, dopamine is a potential new probe substrate for UGT1A10 due to its selectivity. Dopamine was used to study the importance of phenylalanines 90 and 93 in UGT1A10. The results revealed distinct effects that are dependent on differences in the size of the side chain and on the differences in their position within the protein. Examination of twelve mutants revealed lower activity in all of them. However, the enzyme kinetic studies of four mutants showed that their affinities were similar to that of UGT1A10 suggesting that F90 and F93 are not directly involved in dopamine binding in the active site. The glucuronidation of β-estradiol and epiestradiol (α-estradiol) was studied to elucidate how the orientation of the 17-OH group affects conjugation at the 3-OH or the 17-OH of either diastereomer. The results show that there are clear differences in the regio- and stereoselectivities of UGTs. The most active isoforms were UGT1A10 and UGT2B7 demonstrating opposite regioselectivity. The stereoselectivities of UGT2Bs were more complex than those of UGT1As. The amino acid sequences of the human UGTs 1A9 and 1A10 are 93% identical, yet there are large differences in their activity and substrate selectivity. Several mutants were constructed to identify the residues responsible for the activity differences. The results revealed that the residues between Leu86 and Tyr176 of UGT1A9 determine the differences between UGT1A9 and UGT1A10. Phe117 of UGT1A9 participated in 1-naphthol binding and the residues at positions 152 and 169 contributed to the higher glucuronidation rates of UGT1A10. In summary, the results emphasize that the substrate selectivities, including regio- and stereoselectivities, of UGTs are complex and they are controlled by many amino acids rather than one critical residue.

Observations at a series of temperatures of the changes in viscosities and depolarization factors of 1% and 18% solutions of calcium stearate in cetane to which varying amounts of water have been added can be interpreted in terms of the existence of anisometric micelles. In general, changes in the size of the micelles inferred from values of ρh agree with those deduced from the viscosity data. The correlation between anisometry of micelles from rheological and optical observations is much poorer in the case of ρν, presumably because of the difficulty in differentiating the contribution of anisometry and anisotropy to ρν.

We present a comprehensive study of the thickness dependent structural, magnetic and magnetotransport properties of oriented La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 thin films grown on LaAlO3 by Pulsed Laser Deposition. We observe that these films undergo a reduction in Curie temperature (T-c) with a decrease in film thickness, and it is found to be primarily caused by the finite size effect since the finite scaling law [T-c(infinity) T-c(t)/T-c(infinity) = (c/t)lambda holds good over the studied thickness range. We rule out the contribution from the strain induced suppression of Curie temperature with decreasing film thickness since all the films exhibit a constant out of plane tensile strain (0.5%) irrespective of their varying thickness. However, we observe that the coercivity of the films is an order of magnitude higher than that of the bulk due to the tensile strain. In addition, we also observe an increase in the magneto resistance peak and a decrease in coercivity and electrical resistivity with an increase in film thickness. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Driven nonequilibrium structural phase transformation has been probed using time-varying resistance fluctuations or noise. We demonstrate that the non-Gaussian component (NGC) of noise obtained by evaluating the higher-order statistics of fluctuations, serves as a simple kinetic detector of these phase transitions. Using the Martensite transformation in free-standing wires of nickel-titanium binary alloys as a prototype, we observe clear deviations from the Gaussian background in the transformation zone, indicative of the long-range correlations in the system as the phase transforms. The viability of non-Gaussian statistics as a robust probe to structural phase transition was also confirmed by comparing the results from differential scanning calorimetry measurements. We further studied the response of the NGC to the modifications in the microstructure on repeated thermal cycling, as well as the variations in the temperature-drive rate, and explained the results using established simplistic models based on the different competing time scales. Our experiments (i) suggest an alternative method to estimate the transformation temperature scales with high accuracy and (ii) establish a connection between the material-specific evolution of microstructure to the statistics of its linear response. Since the method depends on an in-built long-range correlation during transformation, it could be portable to other structural transitions, as well as to materials of different physical origin and size.

This paper examines empirically the effect firm reputation has on the determinants of debt maturity. Utilising data from European primary bond market between 1999 and 2005, I find that the maturity choice of issuers with a higher reputation is less sensitive to macroeconomic conditions, market credit risk-premiums, prevailing firm credit quality and size of the debt issue. The annualised coupon payments are shown to be a significant factor in determining the debt maturity and reveal a monotonously increasing relationship between credit quality and debt maturity once controlled for. Finally, I show that issuers lacking a credit rating have an implied credit quality positioned between investment-grade and speculative-grade debt.

Recent research documents that institutional or large investors act as antagonists to other investors by showing opposite behavior following disclosure of new information. Using an extremely comprehensive official transactions data set from Finland, we set out to explore the interrelation between investor size and behavior. More specifically, we test whether investor size is positively (negatively) correlated with investor reaction following positive (negative) news. We document robust evidence of that investor size affects investor behavior under new information, as larger investors on average react more positively (negatively) to good (bad) news than smaller investors. In the light of this study it seems increasingly feasible that several recent findings of heterogeneous investor behavior are functions of differences in overconfidence.

Multilayers of Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3 (PMN)-PbTiO3 (PT) were deposited through pulsed laser ablation deposition with different periodicities (d=10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, and 70 nm) for a constant total thickness of the film. The presence of superlattice reflections in the x-ray diffraction pattern clearly showed the superlattice behavior of the fabricated structures over a periodicity range of 20-50 nm. Polarization hysteresis and the capacitance-voltage characteristics of these films show clear size dependent ferroelectric and antiferroelectric (AFE) characteristics. Presence of long-range coupling and strain in multilayers with lower periodicity (similar to 10 nm) exhibited a clear ferroelectric behavior similar to a solid solution of PMN and PT. Multilayers with higher periodicities (20-50 nm) exhibited antiferroelectric behavior, which could be understood from the energy arguments. On further increase of periodicity, they again exhibit ferroelectric behavior. The polarization studies were carried out beyond the Curie temperature T-c of PMN to understand the interlayer interaction. The interaction is changed to a ferroelectric-paraelectric interlayer and tends to lose its antiferroelectric behavior. The behavior of remnant polarization P-r and dP(r)/dT with temperature clearly proves that the AFE coupling of these superlattices is due to the extrinsic interfacial coupling and not an intrinsic interaction as in a homogeneous conventional AFE material. The evidence of an averaged behavior at a periodicity of similar to 10 nm, and the behavior of individual materials at larger periodicities were further confirmed through dielectric phase transition studies. The presence of AFE interfacial coupling was insignificant over the dielectric phase transition of the multilayers.

We demonstrate a top-gated field effect transistor made of a reduced graphene oxide (RGO) monolayer (graphene) by dielectrophoresis. The Raman spectrum of RGO flakes of typical size of 5 mu m x 5 mu m shows a single 2D band at 2687 cm(-1), characteristic of single-layer graphene. The two-probe current-voltage measurements of RGO flakes, deposited in between the patterned electrodes with a gap of 2.5 mu m using ac dielectrophoresis, show ohmic behavior with a resistance of similar to 37 k Omega. The temperature dependence of the resistance (R) of RGO measured between 305 K and 393 K yields a temperature coefficient of resistance [dR/dT]/R similar to -9.5 x 10(-4)/K, the same as that of mechanically exfoliated single-layer graphene. The field-effect transistor action was obtained by electrochemical top-gating using a solid polymer electrolyte (PEO + LiClO4) and Pt wire. The ambipolar nature of graphene flakes is observed up to a doping level of similar to 6 x 10(12)/cm(2) and carrier mobility of similar to 50 cm(2)/V s. The source-drain current characteristics show a tendency of current saturation at high source-drain voltage which is analyzed quantitatively by a diffusive transport model. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. This communication describes the voltage‐current characteristics in the breakdown region of p‐n junctions made on polycrystalline silicon of large grain size. The observed soft breakdown characteristics have been explained by taking into account the effect of curvature of the junction near the grain boundaries.

The aim of this study is to obtain the fracture characteristics of low and medium compressive strength self consolidating concrete (SCC) for notched and un-notched plain concrete beams by using work of fracture G(F) and size effect model G(f) methods and comparing them with those of normal concrete and high performance concrete. The results show that; (i) with an increase in compressive strength, G(F) increases and G(f) decreases; (ii) with an increase in depth of beam, the decrease in nominal stress of notched beam is more when compared with that of a notchless beam.

We report on the size-dependent melting of nanowires with finite length based on the thermodynamic as well as liquid drop model. It has been inferred that the length dependency cannot be ignored, unlike the case of infinite length nanowires. To validate the length dependency, we have analyzed a few experimental results reported in the literature.
