Transient thermal sensitivity is studied for systems that are subjected to conductive heat transfer within themselves and radiative heat transfer with the surrounding environment, including solar heat radiation, The battery in the Indian national communication satellite is one such system for which the studies are conducted with respect to panel conduction, conductance of insulating blanket, power dissipation within the battery, and absorptance and emittance of various elements, Comparison of sensitivities revealed that battery temperature is sensitive to its power dissipation during the beginning of life of the spacecraft, whereas toward the end of life of the spacecraft mission, the effect of absorptance of optical solar reflector is dominating, The influence of optical property values of the multilayer insulation blanket is almost negligible. Among the parameters studied in this analysis, the battery temperature is found to be mast sensitive to emittance of the optical solar reflector.

We report a new method for quantitative estimation of graphene layer thicknesses using high contrast imaging of graphene films on insulating substrates with a scanning electron microscope. By detecting the attenuation of secondary electrons emitted from the substrate with an in-column low-energy electron detector, we have achieved very high thickness-dependent contrast that allows quantitative estimation of thickness up to several graphene layers. The nanometer scale spatial resolution of the electron micrographs also allows a simple structural characterization scheme for graphene, which has been applied to identify faults, wrinkles, voids, and patches of multilayer growth in large-area chemical vapor deposited graphene. We have discussed the factors, such as differential surface charging and electron beam induced current, that affect the contrast of graphene images in detail. Low-pressure MOCVD, with tris(2,4 pentanedionato)aluminum(III) as the precursor, was used in the present investigation to coat alumina on to cemented carbide cutting tools. To evaluate the MOCVD process, the efficiency in cutting operations of MOCVD-coated tools was compared with that of tools coated using the industry-standard CVD process.Three multilayer cemented carbide cutting tool inserts, viz., TiN/TiC/WC, CVD-coated Al2O3 on TiN/TiC/WC, and MOCVD-coated Al2O3 on TiN/TiC/WC, were compared in the dry turning of mild steel. Turning tests were conducted for cutting speeds ranging from 14 to 47 m/min, for a depth of cut from 0.25 to 1 mm, at the constant feed rate of 0.2 mm/min. The axial, tangential, and radial forces were measured using a lathe tool dynamometer for different cutting parameters, and the machined work pieces were tested for surface roughness. The results indicate that, in most of the cases examined, the MOCVD-coated inserts produced a smoother surface finish, while requiring lower cutting forces, indicating that MOCVD produces the best-performing insert, followed by the CVD-coated one. The superior performance of MOCVD-alumina is attributed to the co-deposition of carbon with the oxide, due to the very nature of the precursor used, leading to enhanced mechanical properties for cutting applications in harsh environment.

Conjugated polymers are intensively pursued as candidate materials for emission and detection devices with the optical range of interest determined by the chemical structure. On the other hand the optical range for emission and detection can also be tuned by size selection in semiconductor nanoclusters. The mechanisms for charge generation and separation upon optical excitation, and light emission are different for these systems. Hybrid systems based on these different class of materials reveal interesting electronic and optical properties and add further insight into the individual characteristics of the different components. Multilayer structures and blends of these materials on different substrates were prepared for absorption, photocurrent (Iph), photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminscence (EL) studies. Polymers chosen were derivatives of polythiophene (PT) and polyparaphenylenevinylene (PPV) along with nanoclusters of cadmium sulphide of average size 4.4 nm (CdS-44). The photocurrent spectral response in these systems followed the absorption response around the band edges for each of the components and revealed additional features, which depended on bias voltage, thickness of the layers and interfacial effects. The current-voltage curves showed multi-component features with emission varying for different regimes of voltage. The emission spectral response revealed additive features and is discussed in terms of excitonic mechanisms.

Metal stencils are well known in electronics printing application such as for dispensing solder paste for surface mounting, printing embedded passive elements in multilayer structures, etc. For microprinting applications using stencils, the print quality depends on the smoothness of the stencil aperture and its dimensional accuracy, which in turn are invariably related to the method used to manufacture the stencils. In this paper, fabrication of metal stencils using a photo-defined electrically assisted etching method is described. Apertures in the stencil were made in neutral electrolyte using three different types of impressed current, namely, dc, pulsed dc, and periodic pulse reverse (PPR). Dimensional accuracy and wall smoothness of the etched apertures in each of the current waveforms were compared. Finally, paste transfer efficiency of the stencil obtained using PPR was calculated and compared with those of a laser-cut electropolished stencil. It is observed that the stencil fabricated using current in PPR waveform has better dimensional accuracy and aperture wall smoothness than those obtained with dc and pulsed dc. From the paste transfer efficiency experiment, it is concluded that photo-defined electrically assisted etching method can provide an alternate route for fabrication of metal stencils for future microelectronics printing applications.

The Packaging Research Center has been developing next generation system-on-a-package (SOP) technology with digital, RF, optical, and sensor functions integrated in a single package/module. The goal of this effort is to develop a platform substrate technology providing very high wiring density and embedded thin film passive and active components using PWB compatible materials and processes. The latest SOP baseline process test vehicle has been fabricated on novel Si-matched CTE, high modulus C-SiC composite core substrates using 10mum thick BCB dielectric films with loss tangent of 0.0008 and dielectric constant of 2.65. A semi-additive plating process has been developed for multilayer microvia build-up using BCB without the use of any vacuum deposition or polishing/CMP processes. PWB and package substrate compatible processes such as plasma surface treatment/desmear and electroless/electrolytic pulse reverse plating was used. The smallest line width and space demonstrated in this paper is 6mum with microvia diameters in the 15-30mum range. This build-up process has also been developed on medium CTE organic laminates including MCL-E-679F from Hitachi Chemical and PTFE laminates with Cu-Invar-Cu core. Embedded decoupling capacitors with capacitance density of >500nF/cm2 have been integrated into the build-up layers using sol-gel synthesized BaTiO3 thin films (200-300nm film thickness) deposited on copper foils and integrated using vacuum lamination and subtractive etch processes. Thin metal alloy resistor films have been integrated into the SOP substrate using two methods: (a) NiCrAlSi thin films (25ohms per square) deposited on copper foils (Gould Electronics) laminated on the build-up layers and two step etch process for resistor definition, and (b) electroless plated Ni-W-P thin films (70 ohms to few Kohms per square) on the BCB dielectric by plasma surface treatment and activation. The electrical design and build-up layer structure along- - with key materials and processes used in the fabrication of the SOP4 test vehicle were presented in this paper. Initial results from the high density wiring and embedded thin film components were also presented. The focus of this paper is on integration of materials, processes and structures in a single package substrate for system-on-a-package (SOP) implementation

Compositionally varying multilayers of (1−x) Pb(Mg1/3N2/3)O3–(x) PbTiO3 were fabricated using pulsed laser ablation technique. An antiferroelectriclike polarization hysteresis was observed in these relaxor based multilayer systems. The competition among the intrinsic ferroelectric coupling in the relaxor ferroelectrics and the antiferroelectric coupling among the dipoles at the interface gives rise to an antiferroelectriclike polarization behavior. An increment in the coercive field and the applied field corresponding to the polarization flipping at low temperatures, provide further insight on the competition among the long-range ferroelectric interaction and the interfacial interaction in the polarization behavior of these relaxor multilayers.

Ga and In co-doped ZnO (GIZO) thin films together with ZnO, In-doped ZnO (IZO), Ga-doped ZnO (GZO), and IZO/GZO multilayer for comparison, were grown on corning glass and boron doped Si substrates by PLD. The photoluminescence spectra of GIZO showed a strong white light emission and the current-voltage characteristics showed relatively lower turn-on voltage and larger forward current. The CIE coordinates for GIZO were observed to be (0.31, 0.33) with a correlated colour temperature of 6650 K, indicating a cool white light, and establishing a possibility of white light emitting diodes. Protein nanoparticles (NPs) have found significant applications in drug delivery due to their inherent biocompatibility, which is attributed to their natural origin. In this study, bovine serum abumin (BSA) nanoparticles were introduced in multilayer thin film via layer-by-layer self-assembly for localized delivery of the anticancer drug Doxorubicin (Dox). BSA nanoparticles (similar to 100 nm) show a high negative zeta potential in aqueous medium (-55 mV) and form a stable dispersion in water without agglomeration for a long period. Hence, BSA NPs can be assembled on a substrate via layer-by-layer approach using a positively charged polyelectrolyte (chitosan in acidic medium). The protein nature of these BSA nanoparticles ensures the biocompatibility of the film, whereas the availability of functional groups on this protein allows one to tune the property of the self-assembly to have a pH-dependent drug release profile. The growth of multilayer thin film was monitored by UV-visible spectroscopy, and the films were further characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The drug release kinetics of these BSA nanoparticles and their self-assembled thin film has been compared at a physiological pH of 7.4 and an acidic pH of 6.4.

The evolution of microstructure and texture gradient in warm Accumulative Roll Bonded Cu-Cu multilayer has been studied. Grain size distribution is multimodal and exhibits variation from middle to surface layer. Evolution of texture is largely influenced by shear, in addition to rolling deformation. This leads to the formation of a texture comprising of high fraction of Brass and rolling direction-rotated cube components. Partial recrystallization was observed. Deformed and recrystallized grains were separated using a partition scheme based on grain orientation spread and textures were analyzed for both the partition. Retention of deformation texture components in recrystallized grains suggests the mechanism of recrystallization as continuous recrystallization. Shear deformation plays an important role in grain refinement through continuous recrystallization. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
Strength of hot pressed ZrB2-SiC composite after exposure to high temperatures (1000-1700 degrees C)
Resumo:
Residual strength (room temperature strength after exposure in air at high temperatures) of hot pressed ZrB2-SiC composites was evaluated as function of SiC contents (10-30 vol%) as well as exposure temperatures for 5 h (1000-1700 degrees C). Multilayer oxide scale structures were found after exposures. The composition and thickness of these multilayered oxide scale structure was dependent on exposure temperature and SiC contents in composites. After exposure to 1000 degrees C for 5 h, the residual strength of ZrB2-SiC composites improved by nearly 60% compared to the as-hot pressed composites with 20 and 30 vol% SiC. On the other hand, the residual strength of these composites remained unchanged after 1500 degrees C for 5 h. A drastic degradation in residual strength was observed in composites with 20 and 30 vol% SiC after exposure to 1700 degrees C for 5 h in ZrB2-SiC. An attempt was made to correlate the microstructural changes and oxide scales with residual strength with respect to variation in SiC content and temperature of expsoure. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. A theoretical study has been carried out at the B3LYP/LANL2DZ level to compare the reactivity of phenyl isocyanate and phenyl isothiocyanate towards titanium(IV) alkoxides. Isocyanates are shown to favour both mono insertion and double insertion reactions. Double insertion in a head-to-tail fashion is shown to be more exothermic than double insertion in a head-to-head fashion. The head-to-head double insertion leads to the metathesis product, a carbodiimide, after the extrusion of carbon dioxide. In the case of phenyl isothiocyanate, calculations favour the formation of only mono insertion products. Formation of a double insertion product is highly unfavourable. Further, these studies indicate that the reverse reaction involving the metathesis of N,N-'-diphenyl carbodiimide with carbon dioxide is likely to proceed more efficiently than the metathesis reaction with carbon disulphide. This is in excellent agreement with experimental results as metathesis with carbon disulphide fails to occur. In a second study, multilayer MM/QM calculations are carried out on intermediates generated from reduction of titanium(IV) alkoxides to investigate the effect of alkoxy bridging on the reactivity of multinuclear Ti species. Bimolecular coupling of imines initiated by Ti(III) species leads to a mixture of diastereomers and not diastereoselective coupling of the imine. However if the reaction is carried out by a trimeric biradical species, diastereoselective coupling of the imine is predicted. The presence of alkoxy bridges greatly favours the formation of the d,l (+/-) isomer, whereas the intermediate without alkoxy bridges favours the more stable meso isomer. As a bridged trimeric species, stabilized by bridging alkoxy groups, correctly explains the diastereoselective reaction, it is the most likely intermediate in the reaction.

This paper presents analysis and design of multilayer ultra wide band (UWB) power splitter suitable for wireless communications. An UWB power splitter is designed in suspended substrate stripline medium. The quarter wave transformer in the conventional Wilkinson power divider is replaced by broadside coupled lines to achieve tight coupling for broadband operation. The UWB power splitter is analyzed using circuit models of coupled lines and full wave simulator. Experimental results of 3dB power splitter designed using the proposed structure have been verified against the results from circuit simulation and full wave simulation. The return loss is better than 12 dB across the band 3.1GHz to 10.6GHz. Size of the power splitter is 30mm× 20mm×6.38mm.

The paper reports the synthesis of Nb/Si multilayers (48/27 nm) deposited on Si single crystal substrate by sequential laser ablation of elemental Nb and Si. Significant amount of Nb is found in the amorphous Si layer (similar to 25-35 at.% Nb). The Nb layer is found to be polycrystalline. The phase evolution of the multilayer has been studied by annealing at 600 degrees C for various times and carrying out cross sectional electron microscopic studies. We report the formation of amorphous silicide layer at the Nb/Si interface followed by the formation of the NbSi2 phase in the Si layer. Further annealing leads to the nucleation of hexagonal Nb5Si3 grains in amorphous silicide layers at Nb/NbSi2 interfaces. These results are different from those reported for sputter deposited multilayer. (C) 2013 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.
Enhancing fluorescence signals from aluminium thin films and foils using polyelectrolyte multilayers
Resumo:
In this paper we investigate the application of polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) coated metal slides in enhancing fluorescence signal. We observed around eight-fold enhancement in fluorescence for protein incubated on PEM coated on aluminium mirror surface with respect to that of functionalized bare glass slides. The fluorescence intensities were also compared with commercially available FAST (R) slides (Whatman) offering 3D immobilization of proteins and the results were found to be comparable. We also showed that PEM coated on low-cost and commonly available aluminium foils also results in comparable fluorescence enhancement as sputtered aluminium mirrors. Immunoassay was also performed, using model proteins, on aluminium mirror as well as on aluminium foil based devices to confirm the activity of proteins. This work demonstrated the potential of PEMs in the large-scale, roll-to-roll manufacturing of fluorescence enhancements substrates for developing disposable, low-cost devices for fluorescence based diagnostic methods.
