The hydrophobic carbon nanotubes-ionic liquid (CNTs-IL) get forms a stable modified film on hydrophobic graphite electrode surface. Laccase immobilized on the CNTs-IL gel film modified electrode shows good thermal stability and enhanced electrochemical catalytic ability. The optimal bioactivity occurs with increasing temperature and this optimum is 20 degrees C higher in comparison to free laccase. The improvement of laccase thermal stability may be due to the microenvironment of hydrophobic CNTs-IL gel on graphite electrode surface. On the other hand, the sensitive detection of oxygen has been achieved due to the feasibility of oxygen reduction by both of laccase and nanocomposite of CNTs-IL gel. Furthermore, the laccase hybrid nanocomposite also shows the fast electrochemical response and high sensitivity to the inhibitors of halide ions with the approximate IC50 of 0.01, 4.2 and 87.5 mM for the fluoride, chloride and bromide ions, respectively. It implies the feasibility of laccase modified electrode as an inhibition biosensor to detect the modulators of laccase.

We investigated electrical properties of vanadyl phthalocyanine (VOPc) metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) devices by the measurement of capacitance and conductance, which were fabricated on ordered para-sexiphenyl (p-6P) layer by weak epitaxy growth method. The VOPc/p-6P MIS diodes showed a negligible hysteresis effect at a gate voltage of +/- 20 V and small hysteresis effect at a gate voltage of +/- 40 V due to the low interface trap state density of about 1x10(10) eV(-1) cm(-2). Furthermore, a high transition frequency of about 10 kHz was also observed under their accumulation mode. The results indicated that VOPc was a promising material and was suitable to be applied in active matrix liquid crystal displays and organic logic circuits.

The activity and selectivity of the transition metal complexes formed from Ru, Rh, Pd and Ni with triphenylphosphine (TPP) have been investigated for hydrogenation of citral in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)). High activities are obtained with Ru/TPP and Pd/TPP catalysts, and the overall activity is in the order of Pd approximate to Ru > Rh > Ni. The Ru/TPP complex is highly selective to the formation of unsaturated alcohols of geraniol and nerol. In contrast, the Pd/TPP catalyst is more selective to partially saturated aldehydes of citronellal. Furthermore, the influence of several parameters such as CO2 and H-2 pressures, N-2 pressure and reaction time has been discussed. CO2 pressure has a significant impact on the product distribution, and the selectivity for geraniol and nerol can be enhanced from 27% to 75% with increasing CO2 pressure from 6 to 16 MPa, while the selectivity for citronellol decreases from 70% to 20%. Striking changes in the conversion and product distribution in scCO(2) could be interpreted with variations in the phase behavior and the molecular interaction between CO2 and the substrate in the gas phase and in the liquid phase.

According to the strong application background of bioflavonoid and metal-flavonoid complexes, novel electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MSn) was applied to investigate the structure and fragmentation mechanism of transition metal-rutin complexes. In the full-scan mass spectra, different stoichiometric ratios of rutin-metal complexes were found. In the reaction between rutin and Cu, four kinds of complexes with four different stoichiometric ratios were produced. In the reaction between rutin and Zn, Mn(II), and Fe(II), only two kind of complexes with stoichiometric ratios of 1:1 and 1:2 occured. In further tandem mass spectrometric experiments of different rutin-metal complexes, product fragments, came from the neutral loss of the external rhamnose and the internal glucose unit, oligosaccharide chain, aglycone, and small organic molecules. According to the MSn data, we proposed a mechanism for all fragments of the rutin-Cu complex A and the structure of two rutin-Cu complexes, C and D.

Fragmentation pathways of nine flavone compounds have been studied by using electrospray ionization multi-stage tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MSn). Analyzing the product ion spectra of flavonoids and aglycones, we observed some diagnostic neutral losses, such as *CH3, H2O, residue of glucose and gluconic acid, which are very useful for the identification of the functional groups in the structures. Furthermore, specific retro Diels-Alder (RDA) fragments for flavones with different hydroxyl substitution have also been discussed. The information is helpful for the rapid identification of the location site of hydroxyl substitution on flavones. Fragmentation pathways of C-glycosidic flavonoid have also been discussed using ESI-MSn, demonstrating ions [M-H-60](-), [M-H-90](-), [M-H-120](-) are characteristic ions of C-glycosidic flavonoid. According to the fragmentation mechanism of mass spectrometry and HPLC-MS data, the structures of seven flavones in Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi have been identified on-line without time-consuming isolation. The HPLC-ESI-MSn method for analyzing constituents in the Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi has been established.

In this paper, the extraction of Ce(IV) from nitric acid solutions is investigated using di-(2-ethylhexyl) 2-ethylhexyl phosphonate (DEHEHP, B) in heptane as extractant. Ce(IV) can be extracted effectively from nitric acid solution, whereas it is poorly extracted from sulfuric acid solution. Compared with some other organophosphorus esters, DEHEHP has moderate extractablity for Ce(IV). The extraction efficiency varies with diluent in the order: aliphatic hydrocarbons > nitrobenzene > aromatic hydrocarbons > carbon tetrachloride > chloroform. Regeneration and loading capacities of DEHEHP have also been examined. Ce(IV) extraction in HNO3 solutions as well as extraction of HNO3 and H2O have been systematically studied. The Ce(IV) extraction increases with an increasing of HNO3 concentration and exhibits the maximum distribution ratio at 1-1.5 mol/L HNO3. Nitric acid, as a source of nitrate ion, enhances the extraction of metal ion. But it also competes with metal ions for extractant molecules by its own extraction under high acidities. The proposed extraction process is described by the following equilibrium equations

An inherently disorganized self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of 2-mercapto-3-n-octylthiophene (MOT) has been formed on a gold bead electrode from its dilute ethanolic solution. The disorganization of the monolayer is attributed to the loose packing of the aliphatic chains of the MOT adsorbates, which results from a large difference in dimension/or cross-sectional area between the head (thiophene thiolate) and the tail (alkane chain) groups. Electrochemical measurements including ac impedance spectroscopy and metal underpotential deposition have shown that the monolayer is almost pinhole free. However, the MOT SAM can be penetrated by an organic probe molecule with affinity for the alkane chain part of the monolayer. Some typical probe molecules with different size and hydrophilicity have been employed to assess the permselectivity of the monolayer. Measurement results demonstrate that the ability of the employed probe molecules to penetrate into the monoalyer is mainly dominated by their hydrophilicity/or hydrophobicity. The results presented here suggest the potential application of MOT monoalyer to effectively modify the electrode surface for several research areas such as electrochemical sensors, electrocatalysis, electroanalysis, and supported hybrid bilayer membranes.

In this paper, a calix[4]arene derivative, 5,11,17,23-butyl-25,26,27,28-tetra-(ethanoxycarbonyl)-methoxy-calix[4]arene (L), is investigated as a host to recognize alkali metal ions (Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+ and Cs+) at the interface between two immiscible electrolyte solutions (ITIES). Well-defined cyclic voltammograms are obtained at the micro- and nano-water \ 1,2-dichloroethane (W \ DCE) interfaces supported at micro- and nano-pipets.

Facilitated alkali metal ion (M+= Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, and Cs+) transfers across the micro- and nano-water/1,2-dichloroethane (W/DCE) interfaces supported at the tips of micro- and nanopipets by dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6) have been investigated systematically using cyclic voltammetry. The theory developed by Matsuda et al. was applied to estimate the association constants of DB18C6 and M+ in the DCE phase based on the experimental voltammetric results. The kinetic measurements for alkali metal ion transfer across the W/DCE interface facilitated by DB18C6 were conducted using nanopipets or-submicropipets, and the standard rate constants (k(0)) were evaluated by analysis of the experimental voltammetric data. They increase in the following order: k(Cs+)(0) < k(Li+)(0) < k(Rb+)(0) < k(Na+)(0) < k(K+)(0), which is in accordance with their association constants except Cs+ and Li+.

Sodium ion transfer across micro-water/1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) interface facilitated by a novel ionophore, terminal-vinyl liquid crystal crown ether (LCCE) was studied by cyclic voltammetry. LCCEs have potential applications because of their physicochemical properties and the utilization of crown ethers as selective ionophoric units in other functionalized compounds are interesting. Host-guest-type behavior for such compounds in the liquid-crystalline state is studied. The experimental results suggest that the transfer of the sodium ion facilitated by LCCE was controlled by diffusion of LCCE from bulk solution of DCE to the interface. The diffusion coefficient of LCCE in DCE was calculated to be equal to (3.62 +/- 0.20) x 10(-6) cm(2)/s. Steady-state voltammograms are due to sodium ion transfer facilitated by the formation of 1: 1 metal (M)-LCCE complex at the interface and the mechanism tends to be transfer by interfacial complexation or dissociation (TIC or TID). The stability constant of the complex formed was determined to be log beta(o) = 5.5 in DCE phase. The influence of parameters such as concentration of sodium ion and concentration of LCCE on the sodium ion transfer was investigated.

The effect of metal (Li+, Na+, K+, Ag+) cationization on collision-induced dissociation of ginsenosides was investigated by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry combined with multi-stage mass spectrometry (ESI-MSn). The fragments of sodiated and lithiated molecules give valuable structural information regarding the nature of the aglycone and the sequence and linkage information of sugar moieties. However, the number and relative abundances of fragment ions from lithiated ginsenosides are significantly greater than for the sodiated species, The K+ adducts undergo glycosidic cleavages and very limited cross-ring reactions. The silver ion adducts fragment mainly through glycosidic cleavages. Copyright (C) 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Surfactant adsorption on metal surfaces has been used to limit the activity of the electrode surface and to stabilize colloidal clusters and nanoparticles in solution, but the adsorption and relative potential-induced structure change of the surfactant were not known. Here, the adsorption of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on a Au(111) surface under potential control was investigated by in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The STM images showed that the morphology of SDS on Au(111) was changed from a hemi-cylindrical micellar monolayer to a compact and uniform bilayer through control of the potential. The transition between the hemimicellar monolayer and the compact bilayer is not reversed after a period of time. The model of potential-induced transformation for SDS aggregates on Au(111) was established. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A method for the quantatitive determination of pethidine in human urine by liquid secondary ion and tandem mass spectrometry is presented. Quantification was carried out by using ketamine as internal standard. It was found that the collision-induced dissociation (CID) spectrum of the [M + H](+) ion of pethidine exhibited a prominent daughter ion at mit 220 and ketamine also yielded the same daughter ion at nit 220, For ((quadrupole)) quantitative analysis, the first quadrupole mass filter was set to transmit mit 220 and a narrow-range magnet scan yielded a spectrum of parents, including mit 238 and 248, corresponding to ketamine and pethidine, respectively. Superconductor mixed oxides were often used as catalysts at higher temperature in gas phase oxidations, and considered not suitable for lower temperature reactions in the liquid-solid phase; here the catalysis of YBa2Cu3O7+/-x and Y2BaCuO5+/-x in the phenol hydroxylation at lower temperature with H2O2 as oxygen donor was studied, and found that the superconductor YBa2Cu3O7+/-x, has no catalytic activity for phenol hydroxylation, but Y2BaCuO5+/-x does, even has better catalytic activity and stability than most previously reported ones. With the studies of catalysis of other simple metal oxides and perovskite-like mixed oxides, a radical substitution mechanism is proposed and the experimental facts are explained clearly, and draw a conclusion that the perovskite-like mixed oxides with (AO)(ABO(3)) and (AO)2(ABO(3)) structure have better catalytic activity than the simple perovskite oxides with (ABO(3))(3) structure alone, and (AO) structure unit is the key for the mixed oxides to have the phenol hydroxylation activity. No pollution of this process is very important for its further industrial application.

The interaction of trivalent lanthanide ions and divalent calcium ions with sphingomyelin bilayer has been studied by FT-Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that the bonding of metal ions to the phosphate group of sphingomyelin bilayer, either La3+ or Ca2+, did not change the conformation of the choline group, that is, O-C-C-N+ is still in its gauche conformation. The presence of metal ions changed the states of the interfacial region from liquid-like to amorphous state and even to crystalline. They increased the fluidity of acyl chains of sphingomyelin bilayer and made them packed disorderly.
