Os muiraquitãs foram considerados de proveniência asiática ou, também, como peças esculpidas pelas lendárias mulheres guerreiras, as Amazonas. São peças, hoje, muito raras, encontradas em alguns acervos de Museus. Estudos mineralógicos e químicos de 23 peças do acervo dos Museus de Gemas e do Encontro em Belém, Brasil, mostraram que os muiraquitãs podem ser constituídos, tanto de quartzo, como de albita, ou microclínio, pirofilita, variscita, anortita e tremolita (equivalente ao jade nefrítico), minerais frequentes em formações geológicas do Brasil. No entanto quatro peças são constituídas de jadeíta, ou seja, em jade jadeítico, raro e desconhecido na Amazônia e Brasil. A constatação da presença desse mineral reacende a discussão em torno da origem mineralógica dos muiraquitãs encontrados na Amazônia. Essa origem, antes da atual descoberta, era defendida como amazônica, devido à ausência de jade jadeítico nas peças pesquisadas e pelo fato de jadeíta não ter sido encontrada no Brasil, mas na América Central e na Ásia.

Quando si parla di green information technology si fa riferimento a un nuovo filone di ricerche focalizzate sulle tecnologie ecologiche o verdi rivolte al rispetto ambientale. In prima battuta ci si potrebbe chiedere quali siano le reali motivazioni che possono portare allo studio di tecnologie green nel settore dell’information technology: sono così inquinanti i computer? Non sono le automobili, le industrie, gli aerei, le discariche ad avere un impatto inquinante maggiore sull’ambiente? Certamente sì, ma non bisogna sottovalutare l’impronta inquinante settore IT; secondo una recente indagine condotta dal centro di ricerche statunitense Gartner nel 2007, i sistemi IT sono tra le maggiori fonti di emissione di CO2 e di altri gas a effetto serra , con una percentuale del 2% sulle emissioni totali del pianeta, eguagliando il tasso di inquinamento del settore aeromobile. Il numero enorme di computer disseminato in tutto il mondo assorbe ingenti quantità di energia elettrica e le centrali che li alimentano emettono tonnellate di anidride carbonica inquinando l’atmosfera. Con questa tesi si vuole sottolineare l’impatto ambientale del settore verificando, attraverso l’analisi del bilancio sociale ed ambientale, quali misure siano state adottate dai leader del settore informatico. La ricerca è volta a dimostrare che le più grandi multinazionali informatiche siano consapevoli dell’inquinamento prodotto, tuttavia non adottano abbastanza soluzioni per limitare le emissioni, fissando futili obiettivi futuri.

Nel corso del mio lavoro di ricerca mi sono occupata di identificare strategie che permettano il risparmio delle risorse a livello edilizio e di approfondire un metodo per la valutazione ambientale di tali strategie. La convinzione di fondo è che bisogna uscire da una visione antropocentrica in cui tutto ciò che ci circonda è merce e materiale a disposizione dell’uomo, per entrare in una nuova era di equilibrio tra le risorse della terra e le attività che l’uomo esercita sul pianeta. Ho quindi affrontato il tema dell’edilizia responsabile approfondendo l’ambito delle costruzioni in balle di paglia e terra. Sono convinta che l’edilizia industriale abbia un futuro molto breve davanti a sé e lascerà inevitabilmente spazio a tecniche non convenzionali che coinvolgono materiali di semplice reperimento e posa in opera. Sono altresì convinta che il solo utilizzo di materiali naturali non sia garanzia di danni ridotti sull’ecosistema. Allo stesso tempo ritengo che una mera certificazione energetica non sia sinonimo di sostenibilità. Per questo motivo ho valutato le tecnologie non convenzionali con approccio LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), approfondendo gli impatti legati alla produzione, ai trasporti degli stessi, alla tipologia di messa in opera, e ai loro possibili scenari di fine vita. Inoltre ho approfondito il metodo di calcolo dei danni IMPACT, identificando una carenza nel sistema, che non prevede una categoria di danno legata alle modifiche delle condizioni idrogeologiche del terreno. La ricerca si è svolta attraverso attività pratiche e sperimentali in cantieri di edilizia non convenzionale e attività di ricerca e studio sull’LCA presso l’Enea di Bologna (Ing. Paolo Neri).

L’agricoltura e la trasformazione dei prodotti agro-alimentari hanno un forte impatto sull’ambiente. Su questo aspetto converge l’attenzione sia delle politiche nazionali ed internazionali sia del singolo consumatore. E’ quindi sempre più necessario valutare questo impatto lungo tutta la filiera dei prodotti agro-alimentari per capire dove e come intervenire per aumentarne le prestazioni ambientali. La presente tesi, svolta in collaborazione con la società di ingegneria ambientale E&NGI srl, si propone quindi di analizzare, attraverso la metodologia di Life Cycle Assessment, gli impatti del ciclo di vita di grano e mais, prodotti, trasportati e trattati dalla cooperativa agricola Capa Cologna, in provincia di Ferrara. I cereali sono stati seguiti dalla produzione fino ai cancelli dell’azienda e i dati relativi a tutti i flussi uscenti ed entranti dal processo produttivo sono stati raccolti in campo o ottenuti dall’applicazione di modelli previsionali o, quando necessario, ricavati da banche dati esistenti. Questi flussi hanno costituito un inventario implementato nel software Gabi 6. Successivamente i flussi sono stati convertiti in impatti potenziali utilizzando due metodi (CML 2001 e USEtox) e selezionando sette categorie d’impatto potenziale: esaurimento delle risorse abiotiche, acidificazione, eutrofizzazione, effetto serra, assottigliamento della fascia di ozono stratosferico, smog fotochimico ed ecotossicità acquatica. Dall’analisi è emerso che per entrambi i cereali la fase del ciclo di vita maggiormente impattante è quella di coltivazione. Ciò è dovuto, soprattutto, alla produzione dei fertilizzanti chimici, dei fitofarmaci e alle loro emissioni in ambiente. Sui metodi per la stima di queste emissioni è stata svolta un’analisi di sensitività. Infine, non essendo ipotizzabile intervenire nella fase agricola, in quanto la cooperativa deve seguire un rigido disciplinare, si sono proposte azioni di miglioramento sull’impianto di Capa Cologna. In particolare, si è proposto uno scenario alternativo in cui l’impianto è alimentato ad energia solare fotovoltaica.

As a contribution to the Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia - Cooperative LBA Airborne Regional Experiment (LBA-CLAIRE-2001) field campaign in the heart of the Amazon Basin, we analyzed the temporal and spatial dynamics of the urban plume of Manaus City during the wet-to-dry season transition period in July 2001. During the flights, we performed vertical stacks of crosswind transects in the urban outflow downwind of Manaus City, measuring a comprehensive set of trace constituents including O(3), NO, NO(2), CO, VOC, CO(2), and H(2)O. Aerosol loads were characterized by concentrations of total aerosol number (CN) and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), and by light scattering properties. Measurements over pristine rainforest areas during the campaign showed low levels of pollution from biomass burning or industrial emissions, representative of wet season background conditions. The urban plume of Manaus City was found to be joined by plumes from power plants south of the city, all showing evidence of very strong photochemical ozone formation. One episode is discussed in detail, where a threefold increase in ozone mixing ratios within the atmospheric boundary layer occurred within a 100 km travel distance downwind of Manaus. Observation-based estimates of the ozone production rates in the plume reached 15 ppb h(-1). Within the plume core, aerosol concentrations were strongly enhanced, with Delta CN/Delta CO ratios about one order of magnitude higher than observed in Amazon biomass burning plumes. Delta CN/Delta CO ratios tended to decrease with increasing transport time, indicative of a significant reduction in particle number by coagulation, and without substantial new particle nucleation occurring within the time/space observed. While in the background atmosphere a large fraction of the total particle number served as CCN (about 60-80% at 0.6% supersaturation), the CCN/CN ratios within the plume indicated that only a small fraction (16 +/- 12 %) of the plume particles were CCN. The fresh plume aerosols showed relatively weak light scattering efficiency. The CO-normalized CCN concentrations and light scattering coefficients increased with plume age in most cases, suggesting particle growth by condensation of soluble organic or inorganic species. We used a Single Column Chemistry and Transport Model (SCM) to infer the urban pollution emission fluxes of Manaus City, implying observed mixing ratios of CO, NO(x) and VOC. The model can reproduce the temporal/spatial distribution of ozone enhancements in the Manaus plume, both with and without accounting for the distinct (high NO(x)) contribution by the power plants; this way examining the sensitivity of ozone production to changes in the emission rates of NO(x). The VOC reactivity in the Manaus region was dominated by a high burden of biogenic isoprene from the background rainforest atmosphere, and therefore NO(x) control is assumed to be the most effective ozone abatement strategy. Both observations and models show that the agglomeration of NO(x) emission sources, like power plants, in a well-arranged area can decrease the ozone production efficiency in the near field of the urban populated cores. But on the other hand remote areas downwind of the city then bear the brunt, being exposed to increased ozone production and N-deposition. The simulated maximum stomatal ozone uptake fluxes were 4 nmol m(-2) s(-1) close to Manaus, and decreased only to about 2 nmol m(-2) s(-1) within a travel distance >1500 km downwind from Manaus, clearly exceeding the critical threshold level for broadleaf trees. Likewise, the simulated N deposition close to Manaus was similar to 70 kg N ha(-1) a(-1) decreasing only to about 30 kg N ha(-1) a(-1) after three days of simulation.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the gamma radiation effects on green tea odor volatiles in green tea at doses of 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 kGy. The volatile organic compounds were extracted by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC/MS. The green tea had a large influence on radiation effects, increasing the identified volatiles in relation to control samples. The dose of 10 kGy was responsible to form the majority of new odor compounds following by 5 and 20 kGy. However, the dose of 5 kGy was the dose that degraded the majority of volatiles in non-irradiated samples, following by 20 kGy. The dose of 15 kGy showed has no effect on odor volatiles. The gamma radiation, at dose up to 20 kGy, showed statistically no difference between irradiated and non irradiated green tea on odors compounds. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Fluorescent proteins from the green fluorescent protein family strongly interact with CdSe/ZnS and ZnSe/ZnS nanocrystals at neutral pH. Green emitting CdSe/ZnS nanocrystals and red emitting fluorescent protein dTomato constitute a 72% efficiency FRET system with the largest alteration of the overall photoluminescence profile, following complex formation, observed so far. The substitution of ZnSe/ZnS for CdSe/ZnS nanocrystals as energy donors enabled the use of a green fluorescent protein, GFP5, as energy acceptor. Violet emitting ZnSe/ZnS nanocrystals and green GFP5 constitute a system with 43% FRET efficiency and an unusually strong sensitized emission. ZnSe/ZnS-GFP5 provides a cadmium-free, high-contrast FRET system that covers only the high-energy part of the visible spectrum, leaving room for simultaneous use of the yellow and red color channels. Anisotropic fluorescence measurements confirmed the depolarization of GFP5 sensitized emission.

BACKGROUND: Biosurfactant production was investigated using two strains of Bacillus subtilis, one being a reference strain (B. subtilis 1012) and the other a recombinant of this (B. subtilis W1012) made able to produce the green fluorescent protein (GFP). RESULTS: Batch cultivations carried out at different initial levels of glucose (GO) in the presence of 10 g L(-1) casein demonstrated that the reference strain was able to release higher levels of biosurfactants in the medium at 5.0 <= G(0) <= 10 g L(-1) (B(max) = 104-110 mg L(-1)). The recombinant strain exhibited slightly lower levels of biosurfactants(B(max) = 90-104 mg L(-1))but only at higher glucose concentrations (G(0) >= 20 g L(-1)). Under these nutritional conditions, the fluorescence intensity linked to the production of GFP was shown to be associated with the cell concentration even after achievement of the stationary phase. CONCLUSION: The ability of the genetically-modified strain to simultaneously overproduce biosurfactant and GFP even at low biomass concentration makes it an interesting candidate for use as a biological indicator to monitor indirectly the biosurfactant production in bioremediation treatments. Aim of the study: In a previous study, our group described the gastric protective effect of the hydroalcoholic extract of Brazilian green propolis. The main compounds found in Brazilian green propolis include phenolic acids, such as: caffeic, ferulic, p-coumaric and cinnamic acids. This study was therefore carried out to evaluate the antiulcerogenic property of the main phenolic acids found in Brazilian Green Propolis. Material and methods: The anti-ulcer assays were performed using the following protocols: nonsteroidal-antinflammatory drug (NSAID)-induced ulcer, ethanol-induced ulcer, and stress-induced ulcer. The effects of the phenolic acids on gastric content volume, pH and total acidity, using the pylorus ligated model, were also evaluated. Results: It was observed that treatment using doses of 50 and 250 mg/kg of caffeic, ferulic, p-coumaric and cinnamic acids and positive controls (omeprazol or cimetidine) significantly diminished the lesion index, the total area of the lesion and the percentage of lesion in comparison with the negative control groups. In addition, the percentage of ulcer inhibition was significantly higher in the groups treated with the different phenolic acids, cimetidine or omeprazol, in all the protocols used, compared with the negative control groups. In the model to determine gastric secretion, using ligated pylorus, treatment with phenolic acids and cimetidine reduced the volume of gastricjuice and total acidity and significantly increased the gastric pH (p < 0.05), compared with the control group, with the exception of the group treated with 50 mg/kg of p-coumaric acid, in which no significant difference was observed, compared with the control. In relation to the acute toxicity, none sign of toxicity was observed when phenolic acids, used in this study, were administered for rats in dose of 2000 mg/kg. Conclusions: In conclusion, the results of this study show that caffeic, ferulic, p-coumaric and cinnamic acids display antiulcer activity. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

The reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by neutrophils are involved in the pathogenesis of several diseases, for which the intake of antioxidants could benefit patients either as a prophylactic or therapeutic treatment. Propolis is among the known antioxidants, and its chemical composition may vary under the influence of seasonality, which may interfere in its biological properties. This work evaluates the role of seasonality on the production of some important compounds of propolis samples produced monthly from November 2001 through October 2002 as well as the effect of these samples on the oxidative metabolism of stimulated neutrophils, by using both luminol and lucigenin to produce chemiluminescence (CLlum and CLluc, respectively). The cytotoxicity of the most active extracts to neutrophils was also investigated. The inhibitory effect of the propolis samples varied significantly during the studied period for both assays (3.4 +/- 1.1 to 16.0 +/- 1.1 mu g/mL for CLlum and 6.2 +/- 2.0 to 30.0 +/- 5.0 mu g/mL for CLluc), which was also observed in the quantitative profile of the main analyzed compounds (aromadendrin-4`-methyl ether, artepillin C, and baccharin). This effect started to become more prominent during the fall and, among all the studied extracts, the one obtained in May displayed the highest inhibitory effect on CL production (3.4 +/- 1.1 mu g/mL for alum and 6.2 +/- 2.0 mu g/mL for CLluc). The HPLC qualitative profiles of the extracts of propolis samples were quite similar, but there was a huge variation in terms of quantitative profile. It seems that aromadendrin-4`-methyl ether and baccharin play an essential role in the antioxidant activity, while artepillin C is not very important for this effect. The extracts presenting the highest antioxidant activity were produced in May, June, and August, and they did not display cytotoxicity at 25 mu g/mL; quercetin, used as control, was not toxic to neutrophils at 8.5 mu g/mL (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. The chemistry of copper patination was investigated by two series of experiments. The chemistry of an aqueous copper-sulphate solution was studied at concentrations and pH values near those predicted in an electrolyte on copper exposed to the atmosphere. The electrochemical reactions in an electrolyte in contact with cuprite were investigated in a reaction vessel which used cuprite powder in artificial rainwater to study the electrochemistry of the atmospheric corrosion and patination of copper. Typical sulphate concentrations in rainwater are sufficient to precipitate posnjakite (Cu4SO4(OH)(6)2H(2)O)), a possible precursor to brochantite, within an hour of wetting a cuprite surface. Brochantite (Cu4SO4(OH)(6)), the most commonly found copper salt in natural patinas is responsible for their green appearance. Precipitation of brochantite from the electrolyte resulted from an increase in pH due to the cathodic reduction of oxygen and an increase in cupric ion concentrations by cuprite oxidation. The novel bicyclic lipid, dictyosphaerin (1), has been isolated from the southern Australian marine green alga Dictyosphaeria sericea. The molecular structure for 1 was secured by chemical derivatization and detailed spectroscopic analysis.
