1. Triarylamminium radical-cation complexes. The detailed study of manganese, copper and nickel metal-radical complexes with triarylamminium ligands was conducted. Stable, neutral and pseudo-octahedral coordination monometallic complexes with simple monodentate 2,2`-bipyridine ligand containing a redox-active N,N`-(4,4`-dimethoxydiphenyl-amino) substituent were synthesized and fully characterized. The one-electron oxidation process and formation of persistent radical-cation complexes was observed by cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemical measurements. Evans method measurements were performed with radical-cation complexes generated by chemical one-electron oxidation with NOPF6 in acetonitrile. The experimental results indicate ferromagnetic coupling between metal and triarylamminium cation in manganese (II) complex and antiferromagnetic coupling in nickel (II) complex. This data is supported by DFT calculations which also lend weight to the  spin polarization mechanism as an operative model for magnetic exchange coupling. Neutral bimetallic complexes with a new ditopic ligand were synthesized and fully characterized, including magnetic and electrochemical studies. Chemical oxidation of these precursor complexes did not generate radical-cations, but dicationic complexes, which was confirmed by UV-vis and EPR-experiments, as well as varied temperature magnetic measurements. DFT calculations for radical-cation complexes are included. A synthetic pathway for polytopic ligand with multiple redox-active triarylamine sites was developed. The structure of the ligand is presumably suitable for -spin polarization exchange model and allows for production of polymetallic complexes having high spin ground states. 2. Base-catalyzed hydrosilylation. A simple reductive base-catalyzed hydrosilation of aldehydes and ketones was adapted to the use of the cheap, safe, and non-toxic polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) instead of the common PhSiH3 and (EtO)3SiH, which present significant cost and safety concerns, respectively. The conversion of silane into pentacoordinate silicate species upon addition of a base was studied in details for the cases of phenyl silane and PMHS and is believed to be essential for the hydrosilylation process. We discovered that nucleophiles (a base or fluoride-anion) induced the rearrangement of PMHS and TMDS into light silanes: MeSiH3 and Me2SiH2, respectively. The reductive properties of PMHS under basic conditions can be attributed to the formation of methyl silane and its conversion into a silicate species. A procedure for the generation of methyl silane and its use in further efficient reductions of aldehydes and ketones has been developed. The protocol was extended to the selective reduction of esters and tertiary amides into alcohols and aldimines into amines with good isolated yields and reduction of heterocyclic compounds was attempted.

The thermal diffusivities of some polystyrene supported Schiff complexes of Co(II) and Cu(II) were determined by the laser induced photoacoustic technique. The effect of metal as well as the halogen part on thermal diffusivity of polymer supported complexes was studied. The thermal diffusivity of Co complexes increases while it decreases in Cu complexes with Cl, Br and I substitutions, respectively.

Coordination chemistry of pentadentate 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis(thiosemicarbazone) Schiff base ligands has been intensively studied due to the versatility of the molecular chain in order to obtain very different geometries as well as their broad therapeutic activity. Metal complexes of thiosemicarbazone with aldehydes and ketones have been widely reported. But there have been fewer reports on potential pentadentate bis(thiosemicarbazones) formed from 2,6-diacetylpyridine. Keeping these in view, we have synthesized four bis(thiosemicarbazone) systems with 2,6-diacetylpyridine. In the present work, the chelating behavior of bis(thiosemicarbazones) are studied, with the aim of investigating the influence of coordination exerts on their conformation and or configuration, in connection with the nature of the metal and of the counter ion. The selection of the 2,6-diacetylpyridine as the ketonic part was based on its capability to form polynuclear complexes with different coordination number. The doubled armed bis(thiosemicarbazones) can coordinate to a metal centre as dianionic ligand by losing its amide protons or it can coordinate as monoanionic ligand by losing its amide proton from one of the thiosemicarbazone moiety or it can also be coordinate as neutral ligand. Hence it is interesting to explore the coordinating capabilities of these ligands whether in neutral form or anionic form and to study the structural variations occurring in the ligands during complexation such as change in conformation.

Thiosemicarbazones have recently attracted considerable attention due to their ability to form tridentate chelates with transition metal ions through either two nitrogen and sulfur atoms, N–N–S or oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur atoms, O–N–S. Considerable interest in thiosemicarbazones and their transition metal complexes has also grown in the areas of biology and chemistry due to biological activities such as antitumoral, fungicidal, bactericidal, antiviral and nonlinear optical properties. They have been used for metal analyses, for device applications related to telecommunications, optical computing, storage and information processing. The versatile applications of metal complexes of thiosemicarbazones in various fields prompted us to synthesize the tridentate NNS-donor thiosemicarbazones and their metal complexes. As a part of our studies on transition metal complexes with these ligands, the researcher undertook the current work with the following objectives. 1. To synthesize and physico-chemically characterize the following thiosemicarbazone ligands: a. Di-2-pyridyl ketone-N(4)-methyl thiosemicarbazone (HDpyMeTsc) b. Di-2-pyridyl ketone-N(4)-ethyl thiosemicarbazone (HDpyETsc) 2. To synthesize oxovanadium(IV), manganese(II), nickel(II), copper(II), zinc(II) and cadmium(II) complexes using the synthesized thiosemicarbazones as principal ligands and some anionic coligands. 3. To study the coordination modes of the ligands in metal complexes by using different physicochemical methods like partial elemental analysis, thermogravimetry and by different spectroscopic techniques. 4. To establish the structure of compounds by single crystal XRD studies

Aqua complex ions of metals must have existed since the appearance of water on the earth, and the subsequent appearance of life depended on, and may even have resulted from the interaction of metal ions with organic molecules. Studies on the coordinating ability of metal ions with other molecules and anions culminated in the theories of/\lfred Werner. Thereon the progress in the studies of metal complex chemistry was rapid. Many factors, like the utility and economic importance of metal chemistry, the intrinsic interest _in many of the compounds and the intellectual challenge of the structural problems to be solved, have contributed to this rapid progress. X—ray diffraction studies further accelerated the progress. The work cited in this thesis was carried out by the author in the Department of Applied Chemistry during 2001-2004. The primary aim of these investigations was to synthesise and characterize some transition metal complexes of 2-benzoylpyridine N(4)-substituted thiosemicarbazones and to study the antimicrobial activities of the ligands and their metal complexes.

Reaction of 2-(2'-hydroxyphenylazo)phenol with [Rh(PPh3)(3)Cl] in refluxing benzene in presence of triethylamine afforded a red complex in which the ligand is coordinated to rhodium as a tridentate O,N,O-donor. However, similar reaction of [Rh(PPh3)(3)Cl] with 2-(2'carboxyphenylazo)-4-methylphenol yielded two complexes, viz. a blue one and a green one. In both the complexes the ligand is coordinated as C,N,O-donor. However, in the blue complex orthometallation takes place from the ortho-carbon atom, which bears -COOH group via decarboxylation and in green one orthometallation occurs from the other ortho-carbon. Structures of all the three complexes were determined by X-ray crystallography. In all the three complexes rhodium is sharing the equatorial plane with the tridentate ligand and a chloride, and the two triphenylphosphines are axially disposed. All of the complexes show intense MLCT transitions in the visible region. Cyclic voltammetry on these complexes shows a Rh(III)-Rh(IV) oxidation on the positive side of SCE and a reduction of the coordinated azophenolate ligand on the negative side. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Four new copper(II) complexes, [((CuLN3)-N-1)(2)](ClO4)(2) (1), [(CuL2 N-3)(2)](ClO4)(2) (2), [CuL3(N-3)ClO4)](n) (3) and [CuL4(mu-1,1-N-3)(mu-1,3-N-3)(ClO4)](n) (4) where L-1 = N-1-pyridin-2-yl-methylene-propane-1,3-diamine, L-2 = N-1-(1-pyridin-2-yl-ethylidene)propane-1,3-diamine, L-3 =N-1-(1-pyridin-2-yl-ethylidene)ethane-1,2-diamine and L-4=N-1-(1-pyridin-2-yl-ethylidene)propane-1,2-diamine are four tridentate N,N,N donor Schiff base ligands, have been derived and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Compounds 1 and 2 consist of double basal-apical end-on (EO) azide bridged dinuclear Cu-II complexes with square-pyramidal geometry. In complex 3 the square planar mononuclear [CuL3 (N-3)] units are linked by weakly coordinated perchlorate ions in the axial positions of Cu-II to form a one-dimensional chain. Two such chains are connected by hydrogen bonds involving perchlorate ions and azide groups. Compound 4 consists of 1-D chains in which the Cu-II ions with a square-pyramidal geometry are alternately bridged by single EO and end-to-end (EE) azido ligands, both adopting a basal-apical disposition. Variable temperature (300-2 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements and magnetization measurements at 2 K have been performed. The results reveal that complexes 1 and 2 are antiferromagnetically coupled through azido bridges (J= -12.18 +/- 0.09 and -4.43 +/- 0.1 cm(-1) for 1 and 2, respectively). Complex 3 shows two different magnetic interactions through the two kinds of hydrogen bonds; one is antiferromagnetic (J(1) = - 9.69 +/- 0.03 cm(-1)) and the other is ferromagnetic (J(2) = 1.00 +/- 0.01 cm(-1)). From a magnetic point of view complex 4 is a ferromagnetic dinuclear complex (J= 1.91 +/- 0.01 cm(-1)) coupled through the EO bridge only. The coupling through the EE bridge is practically nil as the N(azido)-Cu-II (axial) distance (2.643 angstrom) is too long. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The compound bis[1,1'-N,N'-(2-picolyl) aminomethyl] ferrocene, L-1, was synthesized. The protonation constants of this ligand and the stability constants of its complexes with Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+ and Pb2+ were determined in aqueous solution by potentiometric methods at 25degreesC and at ionic strength 0.10 mol dm(-3) in KNO3. The compound L-1 forms only 1:1 (M:L) complexes with Pb2+ and Cd2+ while with Ni2+ and Cu2+ species of 2:1 ratio were also found. The complexing behaviour of L-1 is regulated by the constraint imposed by the ferrocene in its backbone, leading to lower values of stability constants for complexes of the divalent first row transition metals when compared with related ligands. However, the differences in stability are smaller for the larger metal ions. The structure of the copper complex with L-1 was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and shows that a species of 2:2 ratio is formed. The two copper centres display distorted octahedral geometries and are linked through the two L1 bridges at a long distance of 8.781(10) Angstrom. The electrochemical behaviour of L-1 was studied in the presence of Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+ and Pb2+, showing that upon complexation the ferrocene-ferrocenium half-wave potential shifts anodically in relation to that of the free ligand. The maximum electrochemical shift (DeltaE(1/2)) of 268 mV was found in the presence of Pb2+, followed by Cu2+ (218 mV), Ni2+ (152 mV), Zn2+ (111 mV) and Cd2+ (110 mV). Moreover, L-1 is able to electrochemically and selectively sense Cu2+ in the presence of a large excess of the other transition metal cations studied.

New hydrophobic, tetradentate nitrogen heterocyclic reagents, 6.6'-bis-(5,6-dialkyl- 1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)2,2'-bipyridines (BTBPs) have been synthesised. These reagents form complexes with lanthanides and crystal structures with 11 different lanthanides have been determined. The majority of the structures show the lanthanide to be 10-coordinate with stoichiometry [Ln(BTBP)(NO3)(3)] although Yb and Lu are 9-coordinate in complexes with stoichiometry [Ln(BTBP)(NO3)(2)(H2O)](NO3). In these complexes the BTBP ligands are tetradentate and planar with donor nitrogens mutually cis i.e. in the cis, cis, cis conformation. Crystal structures of two free molecules, namely C2-BTBP and CyMe4-BTBP have also been determined and show different conformations described as cis, trans, cis and trans, trans, trans respectively. A NMR titration between lanthanum nitrate and C5-BTBP showed that two different complexes are to be found in solution, namely [La(C5-BTBP)(2)](3+) and [La(C5-BTBP)(NO3)(3)]. The BTBPs dissolved in octanol were able to extract Am(III) and Eu(III) from 1 M nitric acid with large separation factors.

New dioxadiaza- and trioxadiaza-macrocycles containing one rigid dibenzofuran unit (DBF) and N-(2-aminoethyl) pendant arms were synthesized, N,N'-bis(2-aminoethyl)-[17]( DBF) N2O2 (L-1) and N,N'-bis(2-aminoethyl)-[22](DBF)N2O3 (L-2), respectively. The binding properties of both macrocycles to metal ions and structural studies of their metal complexes were carried out. The protonation constants of both compounds and the stability constants of their complexes with Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, and Pb2+ were determined at 298.2 K, in aqueous solutions, and at ionic strength 0.10 mol dm(-3) in KNO3. Mononuclear complexes with both ligands were formed, and dinuclear complexes were only found for L-2. The thermodynamic binding affinities of the metal complexes of L-2 are lower than those of L-1 as expected, but the Pb2+ complexes of both macrocycles exhibit close stability constant values. On the other hand, the binding affinities of Cd2+ and Pb2+ for L-1 are very high, when compared to those of Co2+, Ni2+ and Zn2+. These interesting properties were explained by the presence of the rigid DBF moiety in the backbone of the macrocycle and to the special match between the macrocyclic cavity size and the studied larger metal ions. To elucidate the adopted structures of complexes in solution, the nickel(II) and copper( II) complexes with both ligands were further studied by UV-vis-MR spectroscopy in DMSO-H2O 1 : 1 (v/v) solution. The copper(II) complexes were also studied by EPR spectroscopy in the same mixture of solvents. The crystal structure of the copper complex of L-1 was also determined. The copper(II) displays an octahedral geometry, the four nitrogen atoms forming the equatorial plane and two oxygen atoms, one from the DBF unit and the other one from the ether oxygen, in axial positions. One of the ether oxygens of the macrocycle is out of the coordination sphere. Our results led us to suggest that this geometry is also adopted by the Co2+ to Zn2+ complexes, and only the larger Cd2+ and Pb2+ manage to form complexes with the involvement of all the oxygen atoms of the macrocyclic backbone.
