Advanced sensory systems address a number of major obstacles towards the provision for cost effective and proactive rehabilitation. Many of these systems employ technologies such as high-speed video or motion capture to generate quantitative measurements. However these solutions are accompanied by some major limitations including extensive set-up and calibration, restriction to indoor use, high cost and time consuming data analysis. Additionally many do not quantify improvement in a rigorous manner for example gait analysis for 5 minutes as opposed to 24 hour ambulatory monitoring. This work addresses these limitations using low cost, wearable wireless inertial measurement as a mobile and minimal infrastructure alternative. In cooperation with healthcare professionals the goal is to design and implement a reconfigurable and intelligent movement capture system. A key component of this work is an extensive benchmark comparison with the 'gold standard' VICON motion capture system.

The digestibility and passage of an experimental diet was used to compare the digestive physiology of two Propithecus species: P. verreauxi and P. tattersalli. Though both animals have a similar feeding ecology, the captive status of P. verreauxi is considered more stable than that of P. tattersalli. The test diet included a local tree species, Rhus copallina, at 15% of dry matter intake (DMI) and Mazuri Leafeater Primate Diet at 85% of DMI. The chemical composition of the diet (dry matter basis) was 25% crude protein, 34% neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and 22% acid detergent fiber (ADF) with a gross energy of 4.52 kcal/g. After a 6 week acclimation to the experimental diet, animals were placed in research caging. After a 7 day adjustment period, animals were dosed with chromium mordant and Co-EDTA as markers for digesta passage and all feed refusals and feces were collected at timed intervals for 7 days. Digestibility values, similar for both species, were approximately 65% for dry matter, crude protein, and energy, and 40% and 35% respectively, for NDF and ADF. Transit times (17-18.5 hr) and mean retention times (31-34 hr) were not significantly different between species, and there was no difference between the chromium mordant and Co-EDTA. Serum values for glucose, urea, and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) were obtained during four different time periods to monitor nutritional status. While there was no change in serum glucose, serum urea increased over time. The NEFAs increased across all four time periods for P. verreauxi and increased for the first three periods then decreased in the last period for P. tattersalli. Results obtained indicate no difference in digestibility nor digesta passage between species, and that both Propithecus species were similar to other post-gastric folivores.

When performing in opera, a singer portrays a character. A libretto is used as the principal resource for the research. Music can also reveal insights into the composer’s ideas regarding characterization. This performance dissertation examines how musical devices such as genre, texture, meter, melody, instrumentation and form can be used to inform choices of characterization. Three roles from diverse operas were examined and performed. The first role, Estelle Oglethorpe in Later the Same Evening (2007) by John Musto (b 1954) was performed November 15, 16, 17, 18 2007. The second role, Dorabella in Così fan tutte (1789) by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) was performed April 20, 25, 27, 2008. The third role, Olga in Eugene Onegin (1878) by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) was performed on April 19, 2009. All operas were presented by the University of Maryland Opera Studio at the Ina and Jack Kay Theater in the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, University of Maryland College Park. DVD recordings of all performances can be found in the University of Maryland library system.

En esta comunicación se presenta la primera parte de una investigación cuyo objetivo fue analizar si un experimento de enseñanza diseñado ad hoc ayudó a la construcción de caracterizaciones equivalentes del concepto de dependencia lineal, en lenguaje geométrico y analítico. En primer lugar se diseñó un experimento de enseñanza en un contexto de geometría dinámica utilizando simultáneamente representaciones geométricas y analíticas del concepto y se describió una ‘trayectoria hipotética de aprendizaje’ en términos del mecanismo de ‘reflexión sobre la relación actividad-efecto’. En segundo lugar se describieron las trayectorias de aprendizaje de estudiantes de 2o de bachillerato (17-18 años) identificando las ‘acciones de generalización’ y las ‘generalizaciones de la reflexión’.

Esta comunicación aporta información sobre cómo un experimento de enseñanza en un entorno tecnológico usando applets elaborados con el programa de geometría dinámica Geogebra, ayudó a estudiantes de bachillerato (17-18 años) a construir distintas aproximaciones al concepto de función primitiva. Los resultados muestran por una parte que los estudiantes fueron capaces de relacionar distintas ideas usando argumentos variados para asociar la gráfica de una función con la de una de sus primitivas; en estos argumentos subyace principalmente la relación de este concepto con el de derivada. Por otra parte las soluciones aportadas se apoyaron más en el pensamiento visual que en el analítico.

Electromagnetic processing of liquid metals involves dynamic change of the fluid volume interfacing with a melting solid material, gas or vacuum, and possibly a different liquid. Electromagnetic field and the associated force field are strongly coupled to the free surface dynamics and the heat-mass transfer. We present practical modelling examples of the flow and heat transfer using an accurate pseudo-spectral code and the k-omega turbulence model suitable for complex and transitional flows with free surfaces. The 'cold crucible' melting is modelled dynamically including the melting front gradual propagation and the magnetically confined free surrounding interface. Intermittent contact with the water-cooled segmented wall and the radiation heat losses are parts of the complex problem.

Despite the apparent simplicity of the OpenMP directive shared memory programming model and the sophisticated dependence analysis and code generation capabilities of the ParaWise/CAPO tools, experience shows that a level of expertise is required to produce efficient parallel code. In a real world application the investigation of a single loop in a generated parallel code can soon become an in-depth inspection of numerous dependencies in many routines. The additional understanding of dependencies is also needed to effectively interpret the information provided and supply the required feedback. The ParaWise Expert Assistant has been developed to automate this investigation and present questions to the user about, and in the context of, their application code. In this paper, we demonstrate that knowledge of dependence information and OpenMP are no longer essential to produce efficient parallel code with the Expert Assistant. It is hoped that this will enable a far wider audience to use the tools and subsequently, exploit the benefits of large parallel systems.

This presentation reports on the formal evaluation, through questionnaires, of a new Level 1 undergraduate course, for 130 student teachers, that uses blended learning. The course design seeks to radicalise the department’s approach to teaching, learning and assessment and use students as change agents. Its structure and content, model social constructivist approaches to learning. Building on the student’s experiences of and, reflections on, previous learning, promotes further learning through the support of “able others” (Vygotsky 1978), facilitating and nurturing a secure community of practice for students new to higher education. The course’s design incorporates individual, paired, small and large group activities and exploits online video, audio and text materials. Course units begin and end with face-to-face tutor-led activities. Online elements, including discussions and formative submissions, are tutor-mediated. Students work together face-to-face and online to read articles, write reflections, develop presentations, research and share experiences and resources. Summative joint assignments and peer assessments emphasise the value of collaboration and teamwork for academic, personal and professional development. Initial informal findings are positive, indicating that students have engaged readily with course content and structure, with few reporting difficulties accessing or using technology. Students have welcomed the opportunity to work together to tackle readings in a new genre, pilot presentation skills and receive and give constructive feedback to peers. Course tutors have indicated that depth and quality of study are evident, with regular online formative submissions enabling tutors to identify and engage directly with student’s needs, provide feedback and develop appropriately designed distance and face-to-face teaching materials. Pastoral tutors have indicated that students have reported non-engagement of peers, leading to the rapid application of academic or personal support. Outcomes of the formal evaluation will inform the development of Level 2 and 3 courses and influence the department’s use of blended learning.

Se aportan datos morfológicos, químicos y de distribución de seis especies de las familias Baeomycetaceae (Baeomyces) e Icmadophilaceae (Dibaeis, Icmadophila, Thamnolia) presentes en la Península Ibérica. Se publican numerosas nuevas citas de Baeomyces rufus y de Dibaeis baeomyces, que constituyen las especies más frecuentes y abundantes en la península.
