A simple method for designing a digital state-derivative feedback gain and a feedforward gain such that the control law is equivalent to a known and adequate state feedback and feedforward control law of a digital redesigned system is presented. It is assumed that the plant is a linear controllable, time-invariant, Single-Input (SI) or Multiple-Input (MI) system. This procedure allows the use of well-known continuous-time state feedback design methods to directly design discrete-time state-derivative feedback control systems. The state-derivative feedback can be useful, for instance, in the vibration control of mechanical systems, where the main sensors are accelerometers. One example considering the digital redesign with state-derivative feedback of a helicopter illustrates the proposed method. © 2009 IEEE.

This paper presents the generation of optimal trajectories by genetic algorithms (GA) for a planar robotic manipulator. The implemented GA considers a multi-objective function that minimizes the end-effector positioning error together with the joints angular displacement and it solves the inverse kinematics problem for the trajectory. Computer simulations results are presented to illustrate this implementation and show the efficiency of the used methodology producing soft trajectories with low computing cost. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

The leishmaniasis is a spectral disease caused by the protozoan Leishmania spp., which threatens millions of people worldwide. Current treatments exhibit high toxicity, and there is no vaccine available. The need for new lead compounds with leishmanicidal activity is urgent. Considering that many lead leishmanicidal compounds contain a quinoidal scaffold and the thiazole heterocyclic ring is found in a number of antimicrobial drugs, we proposed a hybridization approach to generate a diverse set of semi-synthetic heterocycles with antileishmanial activity. We found that almost all synthesized compounds demonstrated potent activity against promastigotes of Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis and reduced the survival index of Leishmania amastigotes in mammalian macrophages. Furthermore, the compounds were not cytotoxic to macrophages at fivefold higher concentrations than the EC50 for promastigotes. All molecules fulfilled Lipinski's Rule of Five, which predicts efficient orally absorption and permeation through biological membranes, the in silico pharmacokinetic profile confirmed these characteristics. The potent and selective activity of semi-synthetic naphthothiazoles against promastigotes and amastigotes reveals that the 2-amino-naphthothiazole ring may represent a scaffold for the design of compounds with leishmanicidal properties and encourage the development of drug formulation and new compounds for further studies in vivo. © 2013 John Wiley & Sons A/S.

The patterns of the calcium aluminate cement in bone defects experimentally induced in the femur of 12 New Zealand White rabbits were evaluated. The animals were distributed in three experimental groups, corresponding to postoperative observation periods of 15 (G15), 30 (G30) and 60 (G60) days. Clinical, surgical, radiographic and histological appraisals were made to observe the osteoinductor and osteoconductor potential of the biological material, as well as the bone integration. The calcium aluminate cement formulation was biocompatible, but has not acted as a osteoconductor or osteoinductor.

We explored the interaction between radiation of different wavelength and jasmonic acid (JA) or brassinosteroids (BR) on leaf senescence-induced oxidative stress. Three approaches were used: 1) jasmonic acid insensitive1-1 (jai1-1) and brassinosteroid-deficient [dumpy (dpy)] mutants were treated with red (R) or far-red (FR) radiation; 2) phytochromedeficient aurea (au) and high pigment-1 (hp-1) (radiation exaggerated response) mutants were treated with methyl jasmonate (MeJA) or epibrassinolide (epiBL); and 3) double mutants au jai1-1 and au dpy were produced. Leaf chlorophyll content, lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant enzyme activities were determined. After senescence induction in detached leaves, we verified that the patterns of chlorophyll degradation of hormonal and photomorphogenic mutants were not significantly different in comparison with original cv. Micro-Tom (MT). Moreover, there was no significant change in lipid peroxidation measured as malondialdehyde (MDA) production, as well as catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and glutathione reductase (GR) activities in the hormonal mutants. Exogenous BR increased CAT and APX activities in MT, au, and hp-1. As concerns the double mutants, severe reduction in H2O2 production which was not accompanied by changes in MDA content, and CAT and APX activities was observed during senescence in au dpy. The results suggest that JA and BR do not participate in light signaling pathway during leaf senescence-induced oxidative stress. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.
