Comparative Evaluation of Zoledronic Acid, Alfacalcidol and Propranolol in Pharmacological Correction of Experimental Osteoporosis

Propranolol, a beta-adrenergic receptor blocker, is presently considered to be a potential therapeutic intervention under investigation for its role in prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. However, no studies have compared the osteoprotective properties of propranolol with well accepted therapeu-tic interventions for the treatment of osteoporosis. To address this question, this study was designed to evaluate the bone protective effects of zoledronic acid, alfacalcidol and propranolol in an animal model of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Five days after ovariectomy, 36 ovariectomized (OVX) rats were divided in- to 6 equal groups, randomized to treatments zoledronic acid (100 μg/kg, intravenous single dose); alfacal-cidol (0.5 μg/kg, oral gauge daily); propranolol (0.1mg/kg, subcutaneously 5 days per week) for 12 weeks. Untreated OVX and sham OVX were used as controls. At the end of the study, rats were killed under anesthesia. For bone porosity evaluation, whole fourth lumbar vertebrae (LV4) were removed. LV4 were also used to measure bone mechanical propeties. Left femurs were used for bone histology. Propranolol showed a significant decrease in bone porosity in comparison to OVX control. Moreover, propranolol sig- nificantly improved bone mechanical properties and bone quality when compared with OVX control. The osteoprotective effect of propranolol was comparable with zoledronic acid and alfacalcidol. Based on this comparative study, the results strongly suggest that propranolol might be new therapeutic intervention for the management of postmenopausal osteoporosis in humans.

Biocompatibility property of 100% strontium-substituted SiO2-Al2O3-P2O5-CaO-CaF2 glass ceramics over 26 weeks implantation in rabbit model: Histology and micro-Computed Tomography analysis

One of the desired properties for any new biomaterial composition is its long-term stability in a suitable animal model and such property cannot be appropriately assessed by performing short-term implantation studies. While hydroxyapatite (HA) or bioglass coated metallic biomaterials are being investigated for in vivo biocompatibility properties, such study is not extensively being pursued for bulk glass ceramics. In view of their inherent brittle nature, the implant stability as well as impact of long-term release of metallic ions on bone regeneration have been a major concern. In this perspective, the present article reports the results of the in vivo implantation experiments carried out using 100% strontium (Sr)-substituted glass ceramics with the nominal composition of 4.5 SiO2-3Al(2)O(3)-1.5P(2)O(5)-3SrO-2SrF(2) for 26 weeks in cylindrical bone defects in rabbit model. The combination of histological and micro-computed tomography analysis provided a qualitative and quantitative understanding of the bone regeneration around the glass ceramic implants in comparison to the highly bioactive HA bioglass implants (control). The sequential polychrome labeling of bone during in vivo osseointegration using three fluorochromes followed by fluorescence microscopy observation confirmed homogeneous bone formation around the test implants. The results of the present study unequivocally confirm the long-term implant stability as well as osteoconductive property of 100% Sr-substituted glass ceramics, which is comparable to that of a known bioactive implant, that is, HA-based bioglass. Efecto de concentraciones de aceite de algodón sobre la viabilidad, patogenicidad, estabilidad de la cepa CB-32 de Beauveria bassiana (Bals y vuils)

En Nicaragua, Plutella xylostella es la plaga que causa mayores daños al cultivo de repollo (Brassica oleracea) lo que implica una gran inversión en el control de la misma. Para contribuir a la búsqueda de alternativas para el Manejo integrado de esta plaga se realizó este estudio en las instalaciones del Centro Nacional de Protección Vegetal (CENAPROVE) y en la Universidad Nacional Agraria durante el periodo comprendido entre Febrero 1991 y Febrero 1992. Se evaluó la Cepa CB-32 del hongo entomopatógeno Beauveria bassiana (Bals & Vuils) en 6 formulaciones conteniendo 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%. 8% y 10% de aceite de algodón en agua sobre larvas del segundo instar de P. xylostella. La concentración de conidias en las formulaciones fué de 3.35x108 En un rango de tiempo de 14-30 horas después de la inoculación en PDA se distinguieron con un mayor porcentaje de germinación de conidias las formulaciones con O y 2% de aceite de algodón. Las mismas demostraron mayor sedimentación reportando 0.2 y 0.5 ml seis horas después de ser sometidas a reposo. Para la evaluación del efecto de la radiación solar sobre las conidias de B. bassiana se realizó un análisis de varianza y pruebas de Tukey con un 95% de confianza, las respaldan que las formulaciones pueden separarse en cuatro categorías estadísticas diferentes de las cuales en primer lugar tenemos las formulaciones con O y 2% de aceite que presentan el mayor porcentaje de germinación de conidias expuestas a 24 horas de radiación solar (86.61% y 80.36%) respectivamente. A la variable patogenicidad de las conidias de B. bassiana en huésped de Plutella xylostella se efectúo un análisis de varianza y prueba de Tuckey y resulto que las formulaciones pueden clasificarse en 3 categorías estadísticas, sobresaliendo la patogenicidad de las conidias de las formulaciones con O y 2% de aceite reportando 95 y 80% respectivamente. El tiempo letal para las formulaciones no varió provocando la mortalidad dos días después de la inoculación de las larvas por el método de inmersión.

Medidas provisórias : efeitos da caducidade e da rejeição após a EC 32/2001

Propõe analisar a situação das relações jurídicas decorrentes de medida provisória que foi rejeitada ou caducou. Observou-se a história do surgimento da medida provisória no ordenamento jurídico brasileiro e foi feita a análise da medida provisória no texto original da Constituição Federal e no texto constitucional modificado pela Emenda Constitucional nº 32 de 2001. Além disso, fez-se o estudo do caso específico da Medida Provisória nº 82/2002, que não foi convertida em lei. A metodologia utilizada foi a corrente de pensamento dialética e o método monográfico de pesquisa com a análise do artigo 62 da CF, de registros e posicionamentos do Supremo Tribunal Federal, o estudo de artigos de revistas, e, especialmente, de material doutrinário de juristas e especialistas em processo legislativo.

Die West European Fish Technologists Association (WEFTA, gegründet 1970) ist ein Zusammenschluß von Europäischen Insti-tuten, die auf dem Gebiet Fischerei, Fischqualität und -verarbeitung arbeiten und forschen. Ziele der WEFTA ist der Informa-tionsaustausch zwischen Wissenschaftlern und Fischindustrie sowie die Ausweitung und Verbesserung der Zusammenarbeitunterschiedlicher Interessengruppen und Instituten in Projekten.

Effects of 12 weeks muscle hipetrophy training program in a young male athlete: stydy case

PURPOSE: The main goals of the present study were: 1) to review some recommendations about how to increase lean body mass; 2) to analyse whether following scientific sources of current recommendations, visible changes can be shown or not in a participant (body composition, strength and blood analyses). METHODS: One male athlete completed 12 weeks of resistance training program and following a diet protocol. Some test were determined such as, strength 6RM, blood analyses, skindfold measurements, body perimeters and impedance test. Body composition measurements were taken 3 times during the program (before-T1, after 6 weeks of intervention period-T2 and at the end of the program-T3). On the other hand, strength tests and blood analyses were performed twice (before and after the program). RESULTS: Strength was increased in general; blood analyses showed that Creatine kinase was increased a 104% and Triglycerides level was decreased a 22.5%; in the impedance test, body mass (1.6%), lean body mass (3.5%) and Body mass index (1.7%) were increased, whereas fat mass was decreased (15.5%); relaxed and contracted biceps perimeters were also increased. CONCLUSION: A muscle hypertrophy training program mixed with an appropriate diet during 12 weeks leads to interesting adaptations related to increase in body weight, lean body mass, biceps perimeters, strength and creatine kinase levels, and a decrease in fat mass.

Cooperative learning strategies to teach nutrition to geriatric nursing staff

[EN] The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that cooperative learning strategies will help to increase nutrition knowledge of nurses and nursing assistants caring for the elderly in different institutional communities of the Basque Country, Spain. The target population was a sample of volunteers, 16 nurses and 28 nursing assistants. Training consisted of 12 nutrition education sessions using cooperative strategies conducted over a period of 3 consecutive weeks. The assessment instruments included two pretest and two posttest questionnaires with questions selected in multiplechoice format. The first questionnaire was about general knowledge of applied nutrition (0-88 point scale) and the second one on geriatric nutrition knowledge (0-18 point scale). Data were analyzed using SPSS vs. 11.0. The outcomes indicated a significant increase in general nutrition knowledge (difference between the pre- and posttest mean score: 14.5±10.1; P<0.001) and in geriatric nutrition knowledge for all participants (difference between the pre- and post-test mean score: 4.6±4.6; P<0.001). So the results indicated that cooperative learning strategies could improve the nutrition knowledge of nursing staff. Additionally, the results of this study provide direction to continuing nutrition education program planners regarding appropriate content and methodology for programs.
