Let λ1,…,λn be real numbers in (0,1) and p1,…,pn be points in Rd. Consider the collection of maps fj:Rd→Rd given by fj(x)=λjx+(1−λj)pj. It is a well known result that there exists a unique nonempty compact set Λ⊂Rd satisfying Λ=∪nj=1fj(Λ). Each x∈Λ has at least one coding, that is a sequence (ϵi)∞i=1 ∈{1,…,n}N that satisfies limN→∞fϵ1…fϵN(0)=x. We study the size and complexity of the set of codings of a generic x∈Λ when Λ has positive Lebesgue measure. In particular, we show that under certain natural conditions almost every x∈Λ has a continuum of codings. We also show that almost every x∈Λ has a universal coding. Our work makes no assumptions on the existence of holes in Λ and improves upon existing results when it is assumed Λ contains no holes.

P>Aim. This paper is a report of a study on the association between sleep patterns during work nights and recovery from work among nursing workers, considering domestic work hours. Background. Several hospitals allow nursing workers to sleep during the night shift, but this is rarely evaluated from the workers` health perspective. The need for recovery from work concept can be useful for testing the impact of night work on sleep. Recovery is not a problem if workers have enough time to recover between periods of work. Therefore, domestic work would be likely to interfere in the recovery process. Methods. This cross-sectional study was carried out at three hospitals in 2005-2006, through a comprehensive questionnaire. All nursing teams engaged in assistance to patients were invited to participate. Analyses included female night workers with no incidence of insomnia. Participants (n = 396) were classified into those who did not sleep during night shifts, those who slept for up to 2 hours and those who slept for 2-3 hours. Results. Binomial logistic regression analysis showed that sleeping on the job for 2-3 hours during night shifts is related to a better recovery from work provided the workers do not undergo long domestic work hours. Conclusions. Being allowed to sleep at work during night shifts seemed to contribute to, but was not enough to guarantee, a good recovery from work in the studied population. Recommendations to deal with sleep-deprivation among night workers should consider the complexity of gender roles on the recovery process.

This study presents the syntheses and characterization of 2-mercaptopyridine (pyS(-)) complexes containing ruthenium(II) with the following general formula [Ru(pyS)(2)(P-P)], P-P = (c-dppen) = cis-1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethylene) (1); (dppe)=1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (2); (dppp)=1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (3) and (dppb) = 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane (4). The complexes were synthesized from the mer- or fac-[RuCl(3)(NO)(P-P)] precursors in the presence of triethylamine in methanol solution with dependence of the product on the P-P ligand. The reaction of pyS- with a ruthenium complex containing a bulky aromatic diphosphine dppb disclosed a major product with a dangling coordinated dppbO-P, the [Ru(pyS)(2)(NO)(eta(1)-dppbO-P)]PF(6) (5). In addition, this work also presents and discusses the spectroscopic and electrochemical behavior of 1-5. and report the X-ray structures for I and S. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Information and communication technology (ICT) is a subject that is being discussed as a tool that is used within education around the world. Furthermore it can be seen as a tool for teachers to individualize students´ education. Students with literacy difficulties, such as dyslexia, are in constant need of new ways to learn, and new ways to be motivated to learn. The aim of this study is to see what research says in regard to how ICT can be used as a tool to help students with literacy difficulties. Literacy difficulties can be due to a number of things, such as the student has not been taught how to read, trouble within the family which can cause distress, or a neurological disorder such as dyslexia. Furthermore, the main research questions will focus on how ICT can be compared to traditional education forms, such as books and a more teacher centered education within the classroom, and whether ICT can be preferred. The results of this literature review indicates that ICT can be seen as a way for teachers to help students with literacy difficulties gain more self-esteem – something the literature tells us students with learning difficulties lack. The results also show how ICT can lead to a more individualized education. This is due to tools that increase reading comprehension and tools that give direct response when working with ICT, which helps students work more independently.

The structural and electronic properties of bulk and both oxidized and reduced SnO2(110) surfaces as well as the adsorption process of O-2 on the reduced surface have been investigated by periodic DFT calculations at B3LYP level. The lattice parameters, charge distribution, density of states and band structure are reported for the bulk and surfaces. Surface relaxation effects have been explicitly taken into account by optimizing slab models of nine and seven atomic layers representing the oxidized and reduced surfaces, respectively. The conductivity behavior of the reduced SnO2(110) surface is explained by a distribution of the electrons in the electronic states in the band gap induced by oxygen vacancies. Three types of adsorption approaches of O-2 on the four-fold tin at the reduced SuO(2)(110) surface have been considered. The most exothermic channel corresponds to the adsorption of O-2 parallel to the surface and to the four-fold tin row, and it is believed to be associated with the formation of a peroxo O-2(2-) species. The chemisorption of O-2 on reduced SnO2(110) surface causes a significant depopulation of states along the band gap and it is shown to trap the electrons in the chemisorbed complex producing an electron-depleted space-charge layer in the inner surface region of the material in agreement with some experimental evidences. The aim of this study is to analyze the effects of corrosion and successive tungsten inert gas (TIC) welding repairs on the reverse bending fatigue strength of AISI 4130 steel used in components critical to the flight-safety. The tests were performed on hot-rolled steel plate specimens, 1.10 mm and 1.60 mm thick, by means of a SCHENK PWS equipment, with load ratio R = -1, constant amplitude, 30 Hz frequency and room temperature. It was observed that the reverse bending fatigue strength of AISI 4130 steel decreases due to the corrosion and the TIC welding and re-welding processes. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Structures critical to the flight-safety are commonly submitted to several maintenance repairs at the welded joints in order to prolong the in-service life of aircrafts. The aim of this study is to analyze the effects of Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding repair on the structural integrity of the AISI 4130 aeronautical steel by means of experimental fatigue crack growth tests in base-material, heat-affected zone (HAZ) and weld metal. The tests were performed on hot-rolled steel plate specimens, 0.89 mm thick, with load ratio R = 0.1, constant amplitude, at 10 Hz frequency and room temperature. Increase of the fracture resistance was observed in the weld metal but decreasing in the HAZ after repair. The results were associated to microhardness and microstructural changes with the welding sequence. (C) 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Propolis is a honeybee product that has been used since ancient times because of its therapeutic effects. It can be used in the development of alternative therapies for the treatment of many diseases, and because propolis shows antibacterial action, this work was carried out in order to investigate a possible synergism between propolis and antibiotics acting on DNA (ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin) and on the metabolism (cotrimoxazole) against Salmonella Typhi. Propolis samples collected in Brazil and Bulgaria were compared in these assays, and the synergism was investigated by using 1/2 and 1/4 of the minimal inhibitory concentration for propolis and antibiotics, evaluating the number of viable cells according to the incubation time. Brazilian and Bulgarian propolis showed antibacterial activity, but no synergistic effects with the three tested antibiotics were seen. Previous works by our laboratory have revealed that propolis has synergistic effects with antibiotics, acting on the bacterial wall and ribosome, but it does not seem to interact with antibiotics acting on DNA or folic acid, and only a bacteriostatic action was seen in these assay conditions.

In this work a switching feedback controller for stick-slip compensation of a 2-DOF mass-spring-belt system which interacts with an energy source of limited power supply (non-ideal case) is developed. The system presents an oscillatory behavior due to the stick-slip friction. As the system equilibrium for a conventional feedback controller is not the origin, a switching control law combining a state feedback term and a discontinuous term is proposed to regulate the position of the mass. The problem of tracking a desired periodic trajectory is also considered. The feedback system is robust with respect to the friction force that is assumed to be within known upper and lower bounds.
