The conformational features of three 2-sulphur-substituted cyclohexanone derivatives, which differ in the number of sulphur-bound oxygen atoms, i.e. zero (I), one (II) and two (III), were investigated by single crystal X-ray crystallography and geometry optimized structures determined using Hartree-Fock method. In each of (I)-(III) an intramolecular S center dot center dot center dot O(carbonyl) interaction is found with the magnitude correlated with the oxidation state of the sulphur atom, i.e. 2.838(3) angstrom in (I) to 2.924(2) angstrom in (II) to 3.0973(18) angstrom in (III). There is an inverse relationship between the strength of this interaction and the magnitude of the carbonyl bond. The supramolecular aggregation patterns are primarily determined by C-H center dot center dot center dot O contacts and are similarly influenced by the number of oxygen atoms in the molecular structures. Thus, a supramolecular chain is found in the crystal structure of (I). With an additional oxygen atom available to participate in C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions, as in (II), a two-dimensional array is found. Finally, a three-dimensional network is found for (III). Despite there being differences in conformations between the experimental structures and those calculated in the gas-phase, the S center dot center dot center dot O interactions persist. The presence of intermolecular C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions involving the cyclohexanone-carbonyl group in the solid-state, disrupts the stabilising intramolecular C-H center dot center dot center dot O interaction in the energetically-favoured conformation. Manganese(III) complexes of tetra-anionic and tetra-cationic porphyrins have been immobilised on counter-charged, surface-modified silica supports and on organic ion-exchange resins. The reactions of these supported manganese(III) porphyrin systems and analogous uncharged homogeneous systems have been examined using cyclooctene and (E)- and (Z)-4- methylpent-2-ene epoxidations, with iodosylbenzene (PhIO) as the oxygen donor.Comparisons using the manganese porphyrin systems as catalysts for the epoxidation of cyclooctene in acetonitrile reveal that, in low turnover reactions (maximum 136 turnovers), they all give an essentially quantitative yield of epoxide although the heterogeneous reactions are significantly slower than the homogeneous analogues. In large scale repeat-use experiments, however, the supported catalysts are clearly superior, giving markedly better yields. The epoxidations of (E)- and (Z)-4- methylpent-2-ene with all the catalysts show a very high stereoretention, with the (Z)-alkene reacting faster than the (E)-isomer. The sterically hindered manganese(III) 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(2,6-dichloro-3-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin (MnTDCSPP) shows the highest selectivity for the (Z)-isomer; by contrast the supported manganese(III) 5,10,15,20-tetrakis[2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-(trimethylammonio)phenyl]porphyrin on Dowex (MnTF(4)TMAPP-Dowex) reacts with the two alkenes at effectively the same rate. The mechanism of the epoxidations and the influence of the porphyrin ligand and support on the substrate selectivity are discussed.

C(13)H(16)Cl(2)Te,M(r)=370.76,P2(1)/a, a = 8.1833(8), b = 8.4163(8), c = 20.787(2) A, beta = 99.52(1)degrees, Z = 4, R(1) = 0,0275. The primary coordination around the Te(IV) atom is consistent with a pseudo-trigonal bipyramidal bond configuration with two Cl atoms occupying axial positions while the C atoms and the lone pair of electrons occupy the equatorial positions. The Te(IV) atom is involved in an intermolecular secondary interaction resulting in the self assembly of zigzag-chains supramolecular array. In order to determine the theoretical basis set for the Te atom which leads to the best agreement with the experimental data, a large series of geometry optimizations were performed on dichloro dimethyl Te(IV), as a model compound, and the results compared with the mean distances and angles obtained from 45 X-ray structures. The Ahlrichs basis set plus the Hay & Wadt ECP was selected and used for a series of calculations performed on the title compound.

The crystal structure of benzoyl-histidine monohydrate (BYLH hereafter), C-13H-12N-3O-3. H2O was determined from three dimensional data of 3012 independent reflections measured on a Enraf-Nonius (CAD4) single crystal diffractometer. The compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group P2(1)2(1)2(1) with cell dimensions alpha = 7.102(1) angstrom, b = 13.783(3) angstrom, c = 14.160(4) angstrom, V = 1385.92 angstrom-3, F.W. = 277.28, F(000) = 584 Q(calc) = 1.32 g cm-3 and Z = 4.The structure was solved with direct methods. All positional and anisotropic thermal parameters were refined by full-matrix least-squares calculations. The final reliability factor was R = 0.040, while the weighted one was Rw = 0.034. The H atoms found in the difference Fourier map were refined isotropically. The compound consists of a histidine molecule bound to a benzoyl group. There is also a cocrystallized water molecule stabilized through a hydrogen bridge. The 5-membered ring of the histidine has its tautomeric form, after the transfer of the H atom from the N(delta) to the N(epsilon) atom of the ring. There is an sp2 conformation around C6 while the conformation around C3 is that of sp3. The histidine ring forms with the benzene ring a dihedral angle of 109.8(1)-degree.All angle values and bond distances agree very well with the expected values in the literature.

The synthesis of the aryltellurenyl N,N',-tetramethylthiourea (tmtu) iodide has been performed by ligand exchange with potassium iodide and the corresponding aryltellurenyl(tmtu) bromide. In both structures the tellurium atom is primarily three-coordinated, being bonded to a carbon atom of the organic ring and, in directions nearly perpendicular to the Te-C bond, to one tmtu sulfur atom and one iodine. In addition there are Te...secondary bonds, joining the molecules in centrosymmetric dimers, which in turn are joined through C-H...1 and C-H... S interactions, in (1) and (2), respectively.

Structural, electrochemical and spectroscopic data of a new dinuclear copper(II) complex with (+/-)-2-(p- methoxyphenoxy) propionic acid are reported. The complex {tetra-mu-[(+/-)-2-(p-methoxyphenoxy)propionato-O,O']-bis( aqua) dicopper(II)} crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2(1)/n with a = 14.149(1) angstrom, b = 7.495(1) angstrom, c = 19.827(1) angstrom, beta = 90.62(1) and Z = 4. X-ray diffraction data show that the two copper(II) ions are held together through four carboxylate bridges, coordinated as equatorial ligands in square pyramidal geometry. The coordination sphere around each copper ion is completed by two water molecules as axial ligands. Thermogravimetric data are consistent with such results. The ligand has an L' type shape due to the angle formed by the beta-carbon of the propionic chain and the linked p-methoxyphenoxy group. This conformation contributes to the occurrence of a peculiar structure of the complex. The complex retains its dinuclear nature when dissolved in acetonitrile, but it decomposes into the corresponding mononuclear species if dissolved in ethanol, according to the EPR measurements. Further, cyclic voltammograms of the complex in acetonitrile show that the dinuclear species maintains the same structure, in agreement with the EPR data in this solvent. The voltammogram shows two irreversible reduction waves at E-pc = -0.73 and -1.04 V vs. Ag/AgCl assigned to the Cu(II)/ Cu(I) and Cu(I)/Cu degrees redox couples, respectively, and two successive oxidation waves at E-pa = -0.01 and +1.41 V vs. Ag/AgCl, assigned to the Cu degrees/Cu(I) and Cu( I)/Cu( II) redox couples, respectively, in addition to the oxidation waves of the carboxylate ligand.

The pyH[trans-RuCl4(py)2](1) and pyH[trans-RuCl4(CO)(py)](2) complexes were synthesized and found to crystallize in space group P21/n, Z = 4 with a = 8.080(7), b = 22.503(7), c = 10.125(6) Å, β = 93.19(6)° for (1) and a = 7.821(1), b = 10.337(3), c = 19.763(3) Å, β = 93.07(1)° for (2). The structures were solved by Patterson and difference Fourier techniques and refined to R = 0.062 for (1) and R = 0.038 for (2). In both cases the Ru(III) ion is octahedrally coordinated to four co-planar chlorine atoms, the nitrogen of the pyridine rings or carbon from the carbon monoxide. Another protonated pyridine group, which forms the counter-cation completes the crystal structures. The UV-Vis absorption spectra show three bands: (1) 360 (ε = 1180 M-1 cm-1), 441 (ε = 3200 M-1 cm-1) and 532 nm (ε = 400 M-1 cm-1); (2) 315(ε = 1150 M-1 cm-1), 442 (ε = 3170 M-1 cm-1) and 530 nm (ε = 390 M-1 cm-1). The two higher energy bands were associated with ligand-to-metal charge transfer transitions and a third band at lower energy was assigned to a d-d transition. Low temperature EPR data confirmed the presence of the paramagnetically active Ru(III) and it is consistent with axial symmetry of the complexes. The position of the stretching CO band in complex (2) is discussed in terms of metal-CO backbonding.

We report the synthesis and the structural and magnetic characterization of two new compounds: dibromobis-(pdmp)copper(II), CuBr2C22H24N4 (1), and dichlorobis(pdmp)copper(II), CuCl2C22H24N4 (2), where pdmp = 1-phenyl-3,5-dimethylpyrazole. The structures were refined by full-matrix least-squares techniques to R1 = 0.0620 and 0.0777, respectively. Compound 1 belongs to the space group P21/n with a = 8.165(5) Å, b = 10.432(3) Å, c = 13.385(4) Å, β = 100.12(4)̊, and Z = 2. Compound 2 belongs to the space group P21/c with a = 8.379(2) Å, b = 22.630(2) Å, c = 12.256(2) Å, β= 98.43(3)°, and Z = 4. It has the same molecular formula as a compound reported previously but a different crystal structure. Detailed single-crystal EPR measurements were performed for single-crystal samples of 1 and 2 at 9 and 35 GHz and at room temperature. The positions and line widths of the EPR lines were measured as a function of the magnetic field orientation in three orthogonal planes. The data were used to study the electronic properties of the copper ions and to evaluate the exchange interactions between them. Our results are discussed in terms of the electronic pathways for superexchange between copper ions, which are provided by the stacking of pyrazole and phenyl rings of neighboring molecules and by hydrogen-halogen bonds. © 1999 American Chemical Society.
