Patients from the Oral Oncology Center, UNESP, Araçatuba with an indication for prosthesis

Head and neck tumors are a major health concern worldwide, due to their high incidence and mortality rates, particularly in developing countries. In Brazil, this type of cancer is commonly diagnosed and studies suggested that it may be the leading cause of mortality in the country. The increase in life expectancy worldwide, as well as environmental and behavioral factors, are related to carcinogenesis. Therefore, an understanding of basic epidemiology and statistical methods is critical, in order to promote early diagnosis and cancer prevention. Cancer patients with an indication for prosthesis were selected from the medical records of the Oral Oncology Center, School of Dentistry, São Paulo State University (UNESP), Araçatuba, between 1991 and 2010. The following variables were recorded: gender, age, type and location of the lesion, radiation dose and dental prosthesis. The majority of the patients were male (74.15%) and >60 years of age (53.37%). Tumors were most commonly located in the floor of the mouth (11.1%) and squamous cell carcinoma was the most prevalent type (72.8%). This study provides the profiles of patients who attended the Oral Oncology Center and the results may aid in the creation of cancer prevention programs.

Avaliação da qualidade de vida dos funcionários administrativos ativos da Universidade Estadual Paulista - UNESP - Rio Claro

A preocupação com a saúde e bem-estar atinge uma maioria de indivíduos, atualmente a busca por uma vida mais saudável faz parte do dia a dia de grande parte da população. Para alcançar uma boa qualidade de vida diversos aspectos devem ser considerados. No ambiente de trabalho a qualidade de vida tem sido afetada em consequência da utilização cada vez menor das potencialidades corporais dos indivíduos. Em contrapartida, a atividade física proporciona benefícios à saúde dentro e fora do ambiente de trabalho. Assim, o objetivo desse estudo foi identificar a associação entre qualidade de vida no trabalho e sua relação com o nível de atividade física dos funcionários administrativos da Unesp de Rio Claro - SP. A análise dessa associação pode auxiliar no enriquecimento de técnicas para intervenção e promoção da saúde, podendo aumentar a qualidade de vida no trabalho. Para a coleta dos aspectos psicossociais dos participantes foi aplicado um Questionário de Avaliação de Qualidade de Vida no Trabalho em Instituições de Ensino Superior em 136 funcionários administrativos (exceto docentes e trabalhadores de manutenção). Esse questionário avalia 7 domínios em 2 blocos: bloco 1 avaliação de desempenho, bloco 2 avaliação de frequência. Além disso, foi utilizado o questionário de Baecke adaptado por Florindo et al. (2004), para acessar o nível de atividade física. Medidas antropométricas foram coletadas para dados sobre a composição corporal dos participantes. Para coleta de dados sobre os aspectos socioeconômicos foi utilizado o questionário Critério de Classificação Econômica do Brasil proposto pela Associação Nacional de Empresas de Pesquisa (ANEP - 2003). Grupo Ginástico UNESP: contribuições da Ginástica para Todos na formação de seus participantes

Gymnastics for all or General Gymnastics is a gymnastic body practice without competitive purposes, demonstrative character that combines the basics of gymnastics with different forms of body language. It is a pleasurable physical activity and inclusive, within the gymnastic possibilities offers great opportunities for participation of people, creativity, cooperation and human values experiences (AYOUB, 2003). Within this proposal is, in 2011, the Gymnastic Group UNESP, under the guidance and coordination of teachers Laurita Marconi Schiavon e Silvia Deustch as a project of university extension of the Department of Physical Education, Biosciences Institute of the São Paulo State University / Campus Rio Claro - SP. His working method and choreographic composition based on the proposal of the Gymnastic Group Unicamp, reference in this body practice in Brazil, and their course is in two parts: one for the exploration of all the resources that the teaching materials can provide and the other focused on social interaction of its participants. Therefore the research developed in this study aimed to verify contributions of the participation of members in Gymnastic Group Unesp vocational training thereof, and to verify the relationship and the approach of the members with Gym. The methodological approach adopted for this qualitative research is descriptive, and quantitative and qualitative data collected through questionnaires. The participants were 32 students from different courses at the University, and members of Gymnastic Unesp Group from 2011 to 2013, with the inclusion criteria: 1. minimum of one year of participation in Gymnastic Group Unesp; 2. Minimum of two performances of choreography in events with that group. Inclusão escolar de crianças com necessidades educacionais especiais: levantamento bibliográfico de teses, dissertações e trabalhos de conclusão de curso no acervo online da UNESP

Essa pesquisa teve como objetivo discutir e analisar a questão da inclusão escolar tendo em vista explorar a produção acadêmica a respeito da temática a fim de comparar as tendências metodológicas de estudo e relatar as evoluções históricas ao longo desde a década de 90. Para isso, o presente trabalho está estruturado em três capítulos: o primeiro uma breve retrospectiva histórica cultural entre deficientes, escola e a sociedade; o segundo sobre a formação continuada e inicial do professor inclusivo e o terceiro descreve os resultados do levantamento bibliográfico realizado na base de dados online da UNESP, considerando trabalhos de conclusão de curso, dissertações e teses defendidas entre 1990 e 2013. Os dados coletados foram analisados qualitativamente, com alguns resultados quantitativos. Após a coleta de dados, os trabalhos foram analisados com base nos seguintes critérios: objetivos, local da pesquisa, tipo de delineamento, instituto onde o trabalho foi apresentado, principais resultados, instrumentos e tipos de participantes (quando configurar uma pesquisa empírica). Pretendeu-se verificar, se existe uma tendência na metodologia de trabalhos científicos em relação a esse tema, de pesquisas mais de cunho bibliográfico ou empírico, dado a sua complexidade

Diagnóstico dos casos de aprovação nas disciplinas de cálculo diferencial e integral I e II do curso de licenciatura em química - Unesp de Araraquara

Studies show that the disciplines of differential and integral calculus have high failure rates in all schools where they are present and, although this problem has been accentuated in recent years, it is not a local phenomenon. It's observed since 1970s in various Institutions of higher education in Brazil. These studies seek to understand the causes of failures and proposals for teaching methodology that aims to help reduce these rates. However, there is a large contingent of students who are successful at the first time that they perform these disciplines. And these cases, although they have not been studied, can contribute greatly to the understanding the aspects that are related to learning of them. And this understanding can lead to attitudes and learning and teaching methodologies that promote the expansion of this success. The fact that these subjects also have high failure rates in the Degree in Chemistry of this Institute, this study aimed to investigate the factors that were relevant to the cases for approval of the students performed for the first time. For this we constructed a questionnaire containing objective questions and open answers. The objective sought to diagnose the profile of these students with regard to age, gender, basic education (elementary and middle school), study habits, concurrent activities, among others. These questions were analyzed using simple statistics. The open-ended questions asked students to indicate that they attribute the success obtained in the disciplines and to suggest modes of study. These questions were analyzed using thematic categorization, a method of content analysis. This questionnaire was completed, voluntarily and without identification, by students who have passed the first time attended the courses Calculus I and/ or Calculus II and had never started another college prior to this. Humanização na assistência odontológica de pessoas com deficiência, através do projeto Cão Cidadão-Unesp

The Araçatuba School of Dentistry along with the Veterinary Medical Course, both from UNESP, develop the Extension Project called “Cão Cidadão UNESP” (Unesp Citizen Dog), which is accomplished in some assistance societies, including the Dental Assistance Center to Persons with Disabilities (“Centro de Assistência Odontológica à Pessoa com Deficiência” - CAOE-UNESP). This project develops a multidisciplinary work involving professionals and students from health sciences. The project aims at developing activities to relieve stress, fear and anxiety of patients with disabilities in the moment that precedes the dental treatment. The team performs procedures such as walking with the dogs and patients, toothbrushing the dogs so the patients can see it, in order to learn and motivate themselves, dressing the dogs with some accessories such as white clothes, mask and cap, to associate with image of the dentist, making this relationship more pleasant and welcoming. It is evidenced, through reports of professionals, that the patients become calmer and more collaborative with the dentists, distracting them from the treatment focus and creating a positive bond. It should be noted that this experience has contributed to motivate the professionals to introduce new techniques for dental approach, such as Animal Assisted Therapy. It also shows that animals can be very helpful in treating people with disabilities, because they offer a lot of love, companionship and provide moments of joy and happiness to the participants.

Avaliação dos alunos do programa de pós-graduação em odontologia da UNESP (Araçatuba) na elaboração e execução de programas de saúde bucal em seus municípios

The design of oral health has as its most important to bring knowledge, prevention and treatment for the population of municipalities that have this important means of promoting health in general. These programs are based on socio-educational projects, such as tooth brushing, educational lectures, projects, preventive and, fluoride use, application of sealants in pits and even the prevention of oral cancer. In the area of healing, the centers of dental specialties (CEO) associated with the PSF are responsible for implementing treatment of periodontal diseases, trauma, restoration of teeth affected by dental caries, prosthesis design for functional rehabilitation of the patient, biopsies of oral lesions , among other specialties. This study aims to evaluate the students of the Graduate Program in Dentistry, Universidade Estadual Paulista Julio de Mesquita Filho, Campus de Araçatuba, in order to coordinate a program to promote health in their communities. The result based on parameters in the OMS showed that the majority of graduate students of the Faculty of Dentistry Araçatuba acquired knowledge to a reasonable oral health program in their city as a coordinator.

Protocolo de biossegurança e gerenciamento de resíduos no ensino de radiologia odontológica da Faculdade de Odontologia de Araçatuba-UNESP

In dentistry, the technic and radiographic processing incur the possibility of cross infection and environmental contamination. The dentist is responsible for the patient and dental team. For this reason he needs to take a protocol to prevent the spread of microorganisms and environmental exposure to risk factors. The protocols are introduced in the dentistry school as an important teaching tool, whose learning and application reinforce the importance of continuity of these actions in the professional activity. The objective of this paper is to present the biosafety and waste management protocol used in the dental radiology clinic of Araçatuba Dental School, including procedures for the prevention of biological and environmental contamination.

Análise retrospectiva de 61 casos de paracoccidioidomicose diagnosticados na Faculdade de Odontologia de Araçatuba/ UNESP

Paracoccidioidomycosis is a systemic mycosis which requires prolonged treatment. It is highest prevalence in Latin America, with different endemic areas in Brazil. In this study the aim was to characterize clients suffering from mucocutaneous paracoccidioidomycosis by analysis of histopathological examinations of 61 adult patients diagnosed with mucocutaneous paracoccidioidomycosis treated at the Dental School of Araçatuba, from January 1989 to December 2004. It was observed that the disease occurred in 91.81% (56) men and 8.19% (5) women, more prevalent (78.68%) in whites, aged 40 to 59 years (62.9%) and the profession linked to agriculture in 17 patients (27.86%). All patients had oral manifestations, in multiple sites, but it was most prevalent in the oral mucosa (31.42%) and alveolar ridge (17.14%). The dentist as an integral member of the health services, must know the clinical manifestations of paracoccidioidomycosis to achieve early diagnosis and thereby to improve the quality of life of patients.
