This thesis examines partnerships in sustainable urban development projects. Achievement of urban development requires the involvement of several parties. The cooperation of the actors of sustainable urban development is achieved by forming partnerships. The purpose of this study is to find solutions and best practices for the management of partnerships in sustainable residential development projects by examining partnerships and their success factors in sustainable urban development. The impact of the roles, responsibilities and interactions of actors taking part in the processes of creating sustainable urban development in outcomes of these development projects and thus on the overall success of accomplishing sustainable development raises the question of how to manage these collaborations. In order to be able to find the best ways of organizing sustainable urban development projects, it is crucial to have the knowledge of how the interactions between all the parties involved in the development can be managed successfully to give the best outcomes. The main research question of this study is: What are the characteristics of successful partnerships in sustainable urban development projects? In order to answer this question, the success factors in partnerships between actors of sustainable urban development are analyzed. In addition, challenges related to these partnerships are examined to get a more comprehensive view of the features of these collaborative ventures and the obstacles that have to be overcome to ensure the successfulness of cooperation. The research approach is multiple case study comprising four cases. The empirical data has been gathered through theme interviews from four different sustainable residential district projects in Sweden and Finland. A comparative analysis of the cases is performed, based on which seven success factors of partnerships in sustainable urban development supported by the prevailing theories are formulated. In addition, challenges faced by projects regarding the partnerships are discussed.

The ports of Stockholm, Tallinn, Helsinki, Naantali and Turku play key roles in making the Central Baltic region accessible. Effective, competitive, eco-friendly and safe port procedures and solutions for the transportation of goods are of major importance for trade in the Baltic Sea region. This report presents the most essential results and recommendations of the PENTA project, which focused on how ports could better comprehend and face current and future challenges facing carriage of goods by sea. Each of the four work packages (WPs) of the PENTA project analysed the changes from a different perspective. WP2 focused on traffic flows between the PENTA ports. Its main emphasis was on the ports, shipowners, and logistics companies that are the key parties in freight transport and on the changes affecting the economy of those ports. In WP3 noise as an environmental challenge for ports was investigated and the analysis also shed light on the relationship between the port and the city. In WP4 procedures related to safety, security and administrative procedures were researched. The main emphasis was on identifying the requirements for the harmonisation of those procedures. Collaboration is highlighted throughout this report. In order to prepare for the future, it was found that ports need to respond to growing competition, increasing costs and shifts in customer demand by strengthening their existing partnerships with other actors in the maritime cluster. Cargo and passenger transport are the main sources of income for most ports. Cargo traffic between the PENTA ports is expected to grow steadily in the future and the outlook for passenger traffic is positive. However, to prepare for the future, ports should not only secure the core activities which generate revenue but also seek alternative ways to make profit. In order to gain more transit traffic, it is suggested that ports conduct a more thorough study of the future requirements for doing business with Russia. The investigation of noise at ports revealed two specific dilemmas that ports cannot solve alone. Firstly, the noise made by vessels and, secondly, the relationship between the port and the surrounding city. Vessels are the most important single noise source in the PENTA ports and also one of the hardest noise sources to handle. Nevertheless, port authorities in Finland and Sweden are held responsible for all noise in the port area, including noise produced by vessels, which is noise the port authority can only influence indirectly. Building housing by waterfront areas close to ports may also initiate disagreements because inhabitants may want quiet areas, whereas port activities always produce some noise from their traffic. The qualitative aspects of the noise question, cooperating with the stakeholders and the communicating of issues related to noise are just as important. We propose that ports should follow the logic of continuous improvement in their noise management. The administrative barriers discussed in this report are mainly caused by differences in international and national legislation, variations in the customs procedures of each country, the incompatibility of the IT systems used in maritime transport, noncompliance with regulations regarding dangerous goods, and difficulties in applying Schengen regulations to vessels from non-EU countries. Improving the situation is out of the hands of the ports to do alone and requires joint action on a variety of levels, including the EU, national authorities and across administrative borders.

Brändin rooli B-to-B-markkinoilla on suhteellisen uusi aihe. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli analysoida brändien johtamista B-to-B-markkinoilla kahden case-yrityksen kautta. Tutkimus toteutettiin kvalitatiivisena case-tutkimuksena, sillä siinä haluttiin saada laaja kuva yritysten brändäyskäytännöistä ja siten saada uutta tietoa aiheesta. Tutkimuksessa muodostettiin yleisten brändijohtamismallien pohjalta B-to-B-markkinoille sopiva brändijohtamismalli. Tämä malli koostuu seuraavista osa-alueista: strategisuus, yhtenäisyys, sisäinen brändäys, fokus asiakasryhmiin ja kilpailija-analyysi. Mallin sisällölle haettiin tukea alan asiantuntijoilta. Case-haastattelut perustuivat tutkimuksessa muodostettuun brändijohtamismalliin. Brändillä on aikaisemmissa tutkimuksissa todettu olevan merkitystä yritysten välisillä markkinoilla esimerkiksi ostopäätöksessä. B-to-C-markkinoiden lisäksi myös B-to-B-markkinoilla brändiin voi liittää emotionaalisia arvoja. Tässä tutkimuksessa asiantuntijahaastatteluista kävi vahvasti ilmi, että brändijohtaminen on tärkeä osa ison yrityksen johtamista B-to-B-markkinoilla. Huomionarvoista on kuitenkin se, että brändillä ei pysty korvaamaan teknisiä asioita, vaan brändi rakentuu itse tuotteen tai palvelun päälle. Tutkimuksen case-yrityksiksi valittiin KONE ja Stora Enso, sillä molemmat ovat suuria teollisia brändejä, joilla oletettiin olevan strategista brändijohtamista. Molemmat case-yritykset panostavat strategiseen brändijohtamiseen. KONEen brändityö on ollut pitkäjänteisempää, kun taas Stora Enso on viime vuosina käynyt läpi brändiuudistusta. Case-yrityksien brändistrategiat eroavat toisistaan jonkin verran, mikä toi mielenkiintoista vertailua tutkimukseen. Keskeinen tutkimuksen johtopäätös on, että brändijohtaminen on tärkeää myös B-to-B-markkinoilla. Brändiä tulee rakentaa ja johtaa strategisena voimavarana. On otettava kuitenkin huomioon, että brändijohtaminen osana yrityksen toimintaa ei välttämättä ole esimerkiksi pienemmissä yrityksissä samanlaista tai samalla tavoin olennaista kuin nyt tutkituissa suurissa B-to-B-yrityksissä. Kokonaisvaltainen brändijohtaminen ei ole B-to-B-markkinoilla välttämättä vielä itsestäänselvyys. Moni suurempi yritys onkin vasta viime vuosina alkanut systemaattisesti kehittää ja johtaa brändiään. Aihealue tarjoaa runsaasti lisätutkimuksen aiheita. Esimerkiksi pk-yritysten brändäyskäytäntöjen tutkiminen ja laajemmat vertailevat tutkimukset erityyppisten B-to-B-yritysten brändijohtamiskäytännöistä olisivat tarpeen, jotta saataisiin lisää tietoa ilmiön laajuudesta B-to-B-markkinoilla.

The aim of this thesis is to examine the preaching of Nils Bolander during the years 1940–1950. Nils Bolander (1902–1959) was a Swedish minister, later bishop, in the Church of Sweden. Bolander experienced his breakthrough as a preacher and a poet during the years 1940–1950, when he was a pastor of the Engelbrekt congregation in Stockholm. One characteristic of Bolander’s poetry as well as of his sermons is a rich and poetical language. At the same time he also had a clear agenda with his sermons with regard to their contents. The primary research question of this thesis is: What was Bolander’s purpose with his sermons? In this context, two secondary research questions were asked: 1) In what way does the poetical language support and assist the purpose of the sermons? 2) How is Bolander, as an individual and a preacher, engaged in the language and the contents of the sermons? The research material of this study consists of 152 hand-­written sermon manuscripts from church services held by Nils Bolander in Stockholm during the period in question. The method of the study is qualitative research with an abductive approach. Content analysis has formed the primary tool. With regard to the main research question, the purpose of Bolander’s sermons, my study indicated that the purpose was to rouse the listeners from their routine-­like faith and push them towards commitment and active service for God. In Bolander’s theology I found strong influences from Pietism but also some traits usually associated with the theological profile of the Oxford Group. Despite these influences, Nils Bolander’s theology is mainly founded on the Lutheran interpretation of faith. With regard to the secondary research questions concerning the poetical language as well as the role of the preacher my study concludes that the language, the individual and the contents were all connected in Bolander’s preaching and formed a whole that spoke to the audience in various ways.
