The CoRoT satellite exoplanetary team announces its sixth transiting planet in this paper. We describe and discuss the satellite observations as well as the complementary ground-based observations - photometric and spectroscopic - carried out to assess the planetary nature of the object and determine its specific physical parameters. The discovery reported here is a ""hot Jupiter"" planet in an 8.9d orbit, 18 stellar radii, or 0.08 AU, away from its primary star, which is a solar-type star (F9V) with an estimated age of 3.0 Gyr. The planet mass is close to 3 times that of Jupiter. The star has a metallicity of 0.2 dex lower than the Sun, and a relatively high (7)Li abundance. While the light curve indicates a much higher level of activity than, e. g., the Sun, there is no sign of activity spectroscopically in e. g., the [Ca II] H&K lines.

Nowadays there are several ways of supplying hot water for showers in residential buildings. One of them is the use of electric storage water heaters (boilers). This equipment raises the water temperature in a reservoir (tank) using the heat generated by an electric resistance. The behavior of this equipment in Brazil is still a research object and there is not a standard in the country to regulate its efficiency. In this context, an experimental program was conducted aiming to collect power consumption data to evaluate its performance. The boilers underwent an operation cycle to simulate a usage condition aiming to collect parameters for calculating the efficiency. This 1-day cycle was composed of the following phases: hot water withdrawal, reheating and standby heat loss. The methods allowed the identification of different parameters concerning the boilers work, such as: standby heat loss in 24 h, hot water withdrawal rate, reheating time and energy efficiency. The average energy efficiency obtained was of 75%. The lowest efficiency was of 62% for boiler 2 and the highest was of 85% for boiler 9. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, processing methods of Fourier optics implemented in a digital holographic microscopy system are presented. The proposed methodology is based on the possibility of the digital holography in carrying out the whole reconstruction of the recorded wave front and consequently, the determination of the phase and intensity distribution in any arbitrary plane located between the object and the recording plane. In this way, in digital holographic microscopy the field produced by the objective lens can be reconstructed along its propagation, allowing the reconstruction of the back focal plane of the lens, so that the complex amplitudes of the Fraunhofer diffraction, or equivalently the Fourier transform, of the light distribution across the object can be known. The manipulation of Fourier transform plane makes possible the design of digital methods of optical processing and image analysis. The proposed method has a great practical utility and represents a powerful tool in image analysis and data processing. The theoretical aspects of the method are presented, and its validity has been demonstrated using computer generated holograms and images simulations of microscopic objects. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. There you studied details of logic gates, binary numbers and instruction set architectures using the Atmel AVR microcontroller family as an example. In your present course (METR2800 Team Project I), you need to get on to designing and building an application which will include such a microcontroller. These notes focus on programming an AVR microcontroller in C and provide a number of example programs to illustrate the use of some of the AVR peripheral devices.

Suppose a seller wants to sell k similar or identical objects and there are n > k potential buyers. Suppose that each buyer wants only one object. In this case, we suggest the use of a simultaneous auction that would work as follows. Players are asked to submit sealed bids for one object. The individual with the highest bid chooses an object first; the individual with the second-highest bid chooses the next object; and this process continues until the individual with the kth highest bid receives the last object. Each individual pays the equivalent to his or her bid. When objects are identical, we show that the proposed auction generates the same revenue as a first-price sealed-bid sequential auction. When objects are perfectly correlated, there is no known solution for sequential auctions, whereas we can characterize bidding strategies in the proposed auction. Moreover, the proposed auction is optimal (given an appropriately chosen reserve price), and it may be easier and cheaper to run than a sequential auction.

It is well known that the optimal auction-one that maximizes the seller's expected revenue-can be implemented using a standard auction format with a suitably chosen reserve price. This reserve price is above the seller's value of retaining the object and the mechanism requires a commitment not to sell the object below the reserve. This commitment is what makes the reserve valuable to the seller. However, in practice, a reserve price commits the seller to sell the object if the reserve is reached, but does not commit her to withhold the object from sale if bidding falls short of the reserve. In this note we investigate whether reserve prices remain valuable for the seller when she may negotiate with the highest bidder if the reserve is not met. We show that the value of the reserve price may be completely undermined if the seller is a sufficiently weak bargainer. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Reaching out to grasp an object (prehension) is a deceptively elegant and skilled behavior. The movement prior to object contact can be described as having two components [1], the movement of the hand to an appropriate location for gripping the object, the transport component, and the opening and closing of the aperture between the fingers as they prepare to grip the target, the grasp component. The grasp component is sensitive to the size of the object, so that a larger grasp aperture is formed for wider objects [1]; the maximum grasp aperture (MGA) is a little wider than the width of the target object and occurs later in the movement for larger objects [1, 2]. We present a simple model that can account for the temporal relationship between the transport and grasp components, We report the results of an experiment providing empirical support for our rule of thumb. The model provides a simple, but plausible, account of a neural control strategy that has been the center of debate over the last two decades.

We present some applications of high-efficiency quantum interrogation (interaction-free measurement) for the creation of entangled states of separate atoms and of separate photons. The quantum interrogation of a quantum object in a superposition of object-in and object-out leaves the object and probe in an entangled state. The probe can then be further entangled with other objects in subsequent quantum interrogations. By then projecting out those cases in which the probe is left in a particular final state, the quantum objects can themselves be left in various entangled states. In this way, we show how to generate two-, three-, and higher-qubit entanglement between atoms and between photons. The effect of finite efficiency for the quantum interrogation is delineated for the various schemes.

Nesta dissertação discutimos os movimentos em torno da temática da apropriação evidenciando o deslocamento do objeto de uso comum para o campo da arte em três movimentos paradigmáticos: o Dadaísmo, o Surrealismo e o Novo Realismo, e seus desdobramentos na arte contemporânea no sentido de legado cultural. Permitimo-nos transitar pelas demais vertentes dos processos de apropriação na arte nova-iorquina e europeia seguindo as propostas da arte com objetos. Investigamos os processos envolvidos nas controvérsias do ready-made, executado por Marcel Duchamp desde 1913, para dar partida ao percurso histórico das manifestações onde ocorre o objet trouvé, a colagem e a assemblagem. Nosso objetivo é responder à pergunta com a qual o filósofo Arthur C. Danto inicia suas investigações filosóficas acerca das apropriações e condições que fazem de um objeto comum uma obra de arte. Para tanto buscamos as teorias de Abrahan Moles e Jean Baudrillard acerca do objeto industrializado e Roland Barthes com as questões metalingüísticas de sua função-signo. Para discutir tais relações da arte com os objetos, recorremos aos textos de Peter Bürger, André Breton, Pierre Restany, Gregory Battcock, Walter Benjamin, Hal Foster e outros. Destacamos alguns trabalhos artísticos, evidenciando o objeto caixa, tratado como um utilitário com forma e finalidade definidas, reafirmando-se como objeto de consumo, no discurso sobre a poética do espaço de Gaston Bachelard. A pesquisa propõe analisar as transformações radicais das estruturas conservadoras da arte e especular sobre o gesto de apropriação dos objetos, com algumas reflexões direcionadas sobre o objeto e a transgressividade da apropriação como experiência de tensão e poder.

An education promoting scientific literacy (SL) that prepares the citizens to a responsible citizenship has persisted as an argument across discussions on curricula design. The ubiquity of science and technology on contemporary societies and the ideological requirement of informed democratic participation led to the identification of relevant categories that drive curriculum reforms towards a humanistic approach of school science. The category ‘Science as culture’ acquires in the current work a major importance: it enlightens the meaning of scientific literacy. Looking closely to the French term, culture scientifique et tecnologique, turns science simultaneously into a cultural object and product that can be both received and worked at different levels and within several approaches by the individuals and the communities. On the other hand, nonformal and informal education spaces gain greater importance. Together with the formal school environment these spaces allow for an enrichment and diversification of learning experiences. Examples of nonformal spaces where animators can develop their work may be science museums or botanical gardens; television and internet can be regarded as informal education spaces. Due to the above mentioned impossibility of setting apart the individual or community-based experiences from Science and Technology (S&T), the work in nonformal and informal spaces sets an additional challenge to the preparation of socio-cultural animators. Socio-scientific issues take, at times, heavily relevance within the communities. Pollution, high tension lines, spreading of diseases, food contamination or natural resources conservation are among the socio-scientific issues that often call upon arguments and emotions. In the context of qualifying programmes on socio-cultural animation (social education and community development) within European Higher Education Area (EHEA) the present study describes the Portuguese framework. The comparison of programmes within Portugal aims to contribute to the discussion on the curriculum design for a socio-cultural animator degree (1st cycle of Bologna process). In particular, this study intends to assess how the formation given complies with enabling animators to work, within multiple scenarios, with communities in situations of socio-scientific relevance. A set of themes, issues and both current and potential fields of action, not described or insufficiently described in literature, is identified and analysed in the perspective of a qualified intervention of animators. One of these examples is thoroughly discussed. Finally, suggestions are made about curriculum reforms in order, if possible, to strongly link the desired qualified intervention with a qualifying formation.

Este texto define e enquadra teoricamente as principais finalidades e orientações metodológicas do programa de formação dos mentores que acompanharam os professores em período probatório. O referencial de formação dos mentores construiu-se em torno das diferentes dimensões do ato de ensinar. A metodologia de formação organizou-se a partir do conceito de desenvolvimento profissional, considerando o mentor como objeto e sujeito da formação e procurando articular o processo formativo e o trabalho de supervisão desenvolvido pelos mentores, no terreno. As sessões de formação foram planeadas estrategicamente a partir de questões orientadoras às quais se procurou dar resposta através de um conjunto de atividades e materiais. Durante a implementação do período probatório foi produzido pelos intervenientes um conjunto considerável de documentos que foram trabalhados durante a formação. - Abstract This article defines and frames theoretically the main purposes and the methodological guidelines of the training program of mentors who have accompanied teachers on the probationary period. Those guidelines were constructed around the different dimensions of the act of teaching. The training methodology was organized from the concept of professional development, considering the mentor as object and subject of training and seeking to articulate the formative process and supervision work developed by mentors on the field. Training sessions have been strategically planned from guiding questions which sought to respond through a range of activities and materials. During the implementation of the probationary period, the participants delivered a considerable set of documents, which were worked on during training.- Resumen Este texto define y enfoca teóricamente las principales finalidades y orientaciones metodológicas del programa de formación de los mentores que acompañaron a los profesores en el periodo probatorio. Em Portugal, as instituições de ensino superior dispõem de plataformas de e-learning que reflectem uma mais-valia para o processo de ensino-aprendizagem. No entanto, estas plataformas caracterizam-se por serem de âmbito privado expondo, desta forma, a tímida abertura das instituições na partilha do seu conhecimento, como também dos seus recursos. O paradigma Cloud Computing surge como uma solução, por exemplo, para a criação de uma federação de nuvens capaz de contemplar soluções heterogéneas, garantindo a interoperabilidade entre as plataformas das várias instituições de ensino, e promovendo os objectivos propostos pelo Processo de Bolonha, nomeadamente no que se refere à partilha de informação, de plataformas e serviços e promoção de projectos comuns. Neste âmbito, é necessário desenvolver ferramentas que permitam aos decisores ponderar as mais-valias deste novo paradigma. Assim, é conveniente quantificar o retorno esperado para o investimento, em recursos humanos e tecnológicos, exigido pelo modelo Cloud Computing. Este trabalho contribui para o estudo da avaliação do retorno do investimento (ROI) em infra-estruturas e serviços TIC (Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação), resultante da análise de diferentes cenários relativos à introdução do paradigma Cloud Computing. Para tal, foi proposta uma metodologia de análise baseada num questionário, distribuído por diversas instituições de ensino superior portuguesas, contendo um conjunto de questões que permitiram identificar indicadores, e respectivas métricas, a usar na elaboração de modelos de estimação do ROI.

Este trabalho visa contribuir para o desenvolvimento de um sistema de visão multi-câmara para determinação da localização, atitude e seguimento de múltiplos objectos, para ser utilizado na unidade de robótica do INESCTEC, e resulta da necessidade de ter informação externa exacta que sirva de referência no estudo, caracterização e desenvolvimento de algoritmos de localização, navegação e controlo de vários sistemas autónomos. Com base na caracterização dos veículos autónomos existentes na unidade de robótica do INESCTEC e na análise dos seus cenários de operação, foi efectuado o levantamento de requisitos para o sistema a desenvolver. Foram estudados os fundamentos teóricos, necessários ao desenvolvimento do sistema, em temas relacionados com visão computacional, métodos de estimação e associação de dados para problemas de seguimento de múltiplos objectos . Foi proposta uma arquitectura para o sistema global que endereça os vários requisitos identi cados, permitindo a utilização de múltiplas câmaras e suportando o seguimento de múltiplos objectos, com ou sem marcadores. Foram implementados e validados componentes da arquitectura proposta e integrados num sistema para validação, focando na localização e seguimento de múltiplos objectos com marcadores luminosos à base de Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs). Nomeadamente, os módulos para a identi cação dos pontos de interesse na imagem, técnicas para agrupar os vários pontos de interesse de cada objecto e efectuar a correspondência das medidas obtidas pelas várias câmaras, método para a determinação da posição e atitude dos objectos, ltro para seguimento de múltiplos objectos. Foram realizados testes para validação e a nação do sistema implementado que demonstram que a solução encontrada vai de encontro aos requisitos, e foram identi cadas as linhas de trabalho para a continuação do desenvolvimento do sistema global.
