Debido a la problemática del sedentarismo e inactividad física en edad escolar y sus implicaciones en la aparición de enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles, surge un interés por realizar análisis cualitativos que tengan en cuenta los contextos sociales en los que se da esta problemática, con el objetivo de conocer, desde los actores inmersos en las comunidades, cómo se está llevando a cabo y cómo se entiende la actividad física; por tanto, se planteó en esta investigación un diseño narrativo en el cual se indagó, por medio de entrevistas a profundidad, acerca de las representaciones sociales y prácticas de actividad física que desarrollan 9 docentes de educación física pertenecientes a 3 colegios distritales de la Unidad de Planeamiento Zonal Tibabuyes, en la localidad de Suba en Bogotá, Colombia. Resultados: Los docentes entienden la actividad física como todo tipo de movimiento humano, así mismo, se evidencia que las prácticas deportivas son las que predominan en el ámbito escolar. En relación con las condiciones sociales, se encontró que el aspecto familiar es un limitante para el desarrollo de las prácticas físicas del estudiante. Las políticas escolares y distritales le restan importancia a las clases de educación física en el currículo escolar y la inseguridad, debido al consumo de sustancias psicoactivas en el sector, deteriora los espacios deportivos y recreativos como parques y zonas verdes.

Resumen: Objetivo: determinar la asociación entre el tipo de profesor (especialista y no especialista en educación física), con el nivel de actividad física, el contenido-contexto de la clase y el comportamiento del profesor. Método: Estudio descriptivo de corte transversal en un colegio distrital de Bogotá. Fueron evaluadas 57 clases de educación física, y dos docentes (uno con formación académica en Educación física), por medio del Sistema para la observación del tiempo de instrucción de la condición física (SOFIT). Las variables observadas fueron analizadas con estadística descriptiva en cantidades relativas a los minutos y proporción de la clase. Para establecer la asociación entre el género de los estudiantes y el tipo de profesor se usaron test t para muestras independientes y U de Mann-Witney. Resultados: La duración promedio de la clase fue 82,7 minutos, 69% del tiempo programado; los estudiantes pasaron la mayor parte del tiempo de pie 29% (25 minutos), el contenido predominante de la clase fue el de tipo general 21% (25 minutos) y los maestros ocuparon en promedio el 36% (29 minutos) de la clase observando. Los estudiantes pasaron 53% (44 minutos) en actividades físicas moderadas a vigorosas (AFMV). Los niños fueron más activos que las niñas (53.94% vs 50,83%). Se observó una asociación positiva entre el género y casi todos los niveles de actividad física de los estudiantes (p<0,05). Se identificó que existe una diferencia estadísticamente significativa (p<0,05), para las categorías sentado y estar de pie de la variable Niveles de Actividad física tanto en los resultados expresados en minutos, como en la proporción del tiempo de la clase y para la categoría caminando expresada en tiempo de la clase. Para la variable contenido-contexto se determinó una asociación para la categoría conocimiento, tanto en la proporción como en el número de minutos, y para la categoría contenido general en los resultados expresados en proporción de la clase. Finalmente, para la variable comportamiento del profesor expresada tanto en minutos como en proporción de la clase tuvo significancia estadística en todas sus categorías a excepción de la categoría promover Conclusiones: hay una diferencia importante en la forma como los dos tipos de maestros desarrollan la clase y los niveles de actividad física en que involucran a los estudiantes. La educación física en la escuela debe ser impartida por profesionales formados en el área, que tengan las destrezas y habilidades necesarias para desarrollar una educación física de calidad.

O presente estudo partiu de uma amostra de 472 estudantes, do 7º ao 9º ano de três escolas e duas entidades desportivas de Évora, e seis escolas de Lisboa. Procurou-se compreender qual o impacto que a prática de exercício físico tem na adolescência ao nível do bem-estar, autoestima e rendimento escolar através da aplicação da EBEPA e da Escala de Autoestima Global de Rosenberg. Objetivou-se também perceberquais as atitudes dos/as jovens face à educação física e ao exercício físico, através da aplicação do QAAEF e QAEFFCE. Os resultados obtidos sugerem que a prática de exercício físico extracurricular potencia os níveis de bem-estar, autoestima e rendimento escolar dos/as adolescentes. Ao praticarem exercício físico para além do proporcionado pelas aulas de educação física, estes jovens apresentam atitudes mais positivas no que diz respeito ao gosto e importância atribuídos à disciplina e à prática de exercício físico. Os rapazes apresentam resultados mais elevados do que as raparigas, no que diz respeito ao bem-estar e autoestima; Impact of physical exercise in adolescents: well-being, self-esteem and school performance Abstract: This study came from a sample of 472 students, from the 7th to the 9th grade of three schools and two sports entities of Évora, and six schools of Lisbon. We tried to understand the impact that the practice of physical exercise has in adolescence in terms of well-being, self-esteem and school performance through the application of the EBEPA and the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale. The goal was also to understand the attitudes of young people in the face of physical education and physical exercise, through the application of QAAEF and QAEFFCE. The results suggest that the practice of extracurricular physical exercise increases levels of well-being, self-esteem and academic achievement of adolescents. By practice physical exercise,not counting physical education classes, these young people exhibit more positive attitudes giving more credit to the discipline and practice of physical exercise. This study confirmed that the boys have higher results than girls, with regard to the well-being and self-esteem.

O objectivo deste relatório é efectuar uma reflexão fundamentada sobre a prática pedagógica desenvolvida ao longo do ano lectivo 2009/201O. A dimensão investigativa está presente ao longo de todo o relatório e encontra-se associada à reflexão sobre o trabalho desenvolvido nas instituições escolares em que estive inserido. No decorrer deste relatório são destacas as seguintes temáticas: modelos de planeamento; ensino das actividades físico-desportivas; destrezas do professor; promoção da saúde; avaliação; participação na escola; desenvolvimento profissional. Conclusões: O Modelo de planeamento por etapas é aquele que mais favorece a aprendizagem dos alunos. No ensino dos jogos desportivos colectivos, o modelo teaching games for understanding assume-se como uma alternativa às abordagens tradicionais centradas na técnica. Informação aumentada dirigida para um foco externo parece dar origem a uma melhor aprendizagem. As aulas de Educação Física não estão a conseguir dar o contributo necessário para a obtenção dos níveis recomendados de actividade física. ABSTRACT: The purpose of this report is to conduct a reasoned discussion about the pedagogical practice developed during the academic year 2009/201O. The investigative dimension is present throughout the report and is linked to the reflection on the work that was undertaken in schools. Throughout this report the following topics are highlighted: planning models, teaching physical and sporting activities, teacher's skills, health promotion, evaluation, participation in school, and professional development. Conclusions: The model of "planning steps" is one most conducive to student learning. ln collective sports games, the teaching games for understanding model is assumed as an alternative to traditional approaches focused on the critical components of each motor skill. The use of an externa! focus of attention appears to lead to better learning. lt seems that Physical Education classes are failing to provide the levels of physical activity recommended for young people.

This study was an investigation into whether strong teacher-student rapport relates to the drop-out rates of students in grade 9 and 10 health and physical education (HPE). In the study, One hundred and thirty-six grade 9 students from five high schools in Ontario participated in this study. Findings of whether or not rapport related to students’ decision to take an additional HPE credit beyond grade 9 did not prove conclusive. A significant multivariate interaction effect was not found; however, tests of between-subject effects on sex and grade 10 dropouts showed some interesting trends. More research is needed to further illuminate the link between teacher-student rapport and students’ enrollment in optional HPE classes.

Background This study evaluated the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a church-based intervention to promote physical activity (PA) in children. Methods The study was conducted in 4 churches located in 2 large metropolitan areas and 2 regional towns in Kansas. Churches in the intervention condition implemented the "Shining Like Stars" physical activity curriculum module during their regularly scheduled Sunday school classes. Churches in the control condition delivered the same content without integrating physical activity into the lessons. In addition to the curriculum, the intervention churches completed a series of weekly family devotional activities designed to promote parental support for PA and increase PA outside of Sunday school. Results Children completing the Shining Like Stars curriculum exhibited significantly greater amounts of MVPA than those in the control condition (20 steps/min vs. 7 steps/min). No intervention effects were observed for PA levels outside of Sunday school or parental support for PA; however, relative to controls, children in the intervention churches did exhibit a significant reduction in screen time. Conclusion The findings confirm that the integration of physical activity into Sunday school is feasible and a potentially effective strategy for promoting PA in young children.

To assess the effectiveness of a school based physical activity programme during one school year on physical and psychological health in young schoolchildren. Cluster randomised controlled trial. 28 classes from 15 elementary schools in Switzerland randomly selected and assigned in a 4:3 ratio to an intervention (n=16) or control arm (n=12) after stratification for grade (first and fifth grade), from August 2005 to June 2006. 540 children, of whom 502 consented and presented at baseline. Children in the intervention arm (n=297) received a multi-component physical activity programme that included structuring the three existing physical education lessons each week and adding two additional lessons a week, daily short activity breaks, and physical activity homework. Children (n=205) and parents in the control group were not informed of an intervention group. For most outcome measures, the assessors were blinded. Primary outcome measures included body fat (sum of four skinfolds), aerobic fitness (shuttle run test), physical activity (accelerometry), and quality of life (questionnaires). Secondary outcome measures included body mass index and cardiovascular risk score (average z score of waist circumference, mean blood pressure, blood glucose, inverted high density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides). 498 children completed the baseline and follow-up assessments (mean age 6.9 (SD 0.3) years for first grade, 11.1 (0.5) years for fifth grade). After adjustment for grade, sex, baseline values, and clustering within classes, children in the intervention arm compared with controls showed more negative changes in the z score of the sum of four skinfolds (-0.12, 95 % confidence interval -0.21 to -0.03; P=0.009). Likewise, their z scores for aerobic fitness increased more favourably (0.17, 0.01 to 0.32; P=0.04), as did those for moderate-vigorous physical activity in school (1.19, 0.78 to 1.60; P<0.001), all day moderate-vigorous physical activity (0.44, 0.05 to 0.82; P=0.03), and total physical activity in school (0.92, 0.35 to 1.50; P=0.003). Z scores for overall daily physical activity (0.21, -0.21 to 0.63) and physical quality of life (0.42, -1.23 to 2.06) as well as psychological quality of life (0.59, -0.85 to 2.03) did not change significantly. A school based multi-component physical activity intervention including compulsory elements improved physical activity and fitness and reduced adiposity in children. Movement education and adapted physical activity are content areas not addressed in pre-service education or in-service training for Ontario practitioners working with individuals with disabilities in physical environments. Consequently, physical activity is often overlooked by service providers in programming and intervention for exceptional young learners. A formative evaluation, multiple-case study design was employed in this research in which a purposeful sample of expert practitioners performed a guided, descriptive evaluation of a three-day professional development workshop curriculum designed to supplement these areas lacking in professional preparation within their respective cohorts. Case-by-case and comparative analyses illustrated the inherent assumptions and societal constraints which prioritize the structure of professional development within the education system and other government organizations providing services for school-aged persons with disabilities in Ontario. Findings, discussed from a critical postmodern perspective, illustrate the paradoxical nature of Western values and prevailing mind/body dichotomy that guide professional practice in these fields.

This review paper identifies the conceptual underpinnings of current movement research in Physical Education. Using a hermeneutic approach, four analogies for movement education are identified: the motor program analogy, the neurobiological systems analogy, the instinctive movement analogy, and the embodied exploration analogy. Three issues related to logical consistency and its relevance for movement education are raised. The first relates to tensions between the analogies and educational policy. The second concerns differences among the four analogies. The third issue relates to the appropriateness of specific analogies for dealing with certain movement contexts. In each case, strategies for improvement are considered. The paper is concluded with a brief summary along with reflections on issues that require further attention.

The perceived benefits of Wellness Education in University environments are substantiated by a number of studies in relation to the place, impact and purpose of Wellness curricula. Many authors recommend that Wellness curriculum design must include personal experiences, reflective practice and active self-managed learning approaches in order to legitimise the adoption of Wellness as a personal lifestyle approach. Wellness Education provides opportunities to engage in learning self-regulation skills both within and beyond the context of the Wellness construct. Learner success is optimised by creating authentic opportunities to develop and practice self regulation strategies that facilitate making meaning of life's experiences. Such opportunities include provision of options for self determined outcomes and are scaffolded according to learner needs; thus, configuring a learner-centred curriculum in Wellness Education would potentially benefit by overlaying principles from the domains of Self Determination Theory, Self Regulated Learning and Transformative Education Theory to highlight authentic, transformative learning as a lifelong approach to Wellness.

This review assembles pedometry literature focused on youth, with particular attention to expected values for habitual, school day, physical education class, recess, lunch break, out-of-school, weekend, and vacation activity. From 31 studies published since 1999, we constructed a youth habitual activity step-curve that indicates: (a) from ages 6 to 18 years, boys typically take more steps per day than girls; (b) for both sexes the youngest age groups appear to take fewer steps per day than those immediately older; and (c) from a young age, boys decline more in steps per day to become move consistent with girls at older ages. Additional studies revealed that boys take approximately 42-49% of daily steps during the school day; girls take 41-47%. Steps taken during physical education class contribute to total steps per day by 8.7-23.7% in boys and 11.4-17.2% in girls. Recess represents 8-11% and lunch break represents 15-16% of total steps per day. After-school activity contributes approximately 47-56% of total steps per day for boys and 47-59% for girls. Weekdays range from approximately 12,000 to 16,000 steps per day in boys and 10,000 to 14,000 steps per day in girls. The corresponding values for weekend days are 12,000-13,000 steps per day in boys and 10,000-12,000 steps per day in girls.
