El otro oficio de los profesores : la novela académica anglo-americana.

Pretende ofrecer un panorama general de la novela académica según se ha cultivado en Gran Bretaña y Estados Unidos. El estudio selecciona diez autores y treinta y dos novelas que, ambientadas global o parcialmente en un escenario académico, describen la psicopatología diaria de profesores y alumnos en sus versiones paródicas. Se toma a David Ladge, crítico novelista, y hasta hace poco profesor de la Universidad de Birmingham, como prototipo o exponente nuclear del subgénero, según los términos del David Fishelov. Según el lugar que ocupan en el espacio narrativo que rodea al prototipo, se habla de híbridos académicos, cuando la narración universitaria se ha combinado con la de otros subgéneros al mismo nivel (como la novela académica de detectives que practica A. Cross, la novela de costumbres académicas que cultivan B. Pym y A. Lurie, y de las novelas académicas de crecimiento de M. Drabble) y de narraciones escritas en modo académico, esto es, cuando la universidad no aparece como elemento funcional del discurso y la novela tiene sólo alguna de las características señaladas en el primer capítulo como definitorias del subgénero, tal es el caso de A. Brookner, C. S. Lewis, J. Barth, P. Roth, J. Russ y M. French. La novela académica es un subgénero polimórfico, flexible y versátil (dada la universalidad de los temas que trata y el carácter poco aquilatado de sus estructuras), y como tal se presta a una multiplicidad de enfoques.

The British ‘failure’ that never was? The Anglo-American ‘productivity gap’ in large-scale interwar retailing—evidence from the department store sector

Interwar British retailing has been characterized as having lower productivity, less developed managerial hierarchies and methods, and weaker scale economies than its US counterpart. This article examines comparative productivity for one major segment of large-scale retailing in both countries—the department store sector. Drawing on exceptionally detailed contemporary survey data, we show that British department stores in fact achieved superior performance in terms of operating costs, margins, profits, and stock-turn. While smaller British stores had lower labour productivity than US stores of equivalent size, TFP was generally higher for British stores, which also enjoyed stronger scale economies. We also examine the reasons behind Britain's surprisingly strong relative performance, using surviving original returns from the British surveys. Contrary to arguments that British retailers faced major barriers to the development of large-scale enterprises, that could reap economies of scale and scope and invest in machinery and marketing to support the growth of their primary sales functions, we find that British department stores enthusiastically embraced the retail ‘managerial revolution’—and reaped substantial benefits from this investment.

La Faune marine dans le voyage de Saint brendan anglo-normand

Le Voyage de Saint Brendan présente un univers hybride, à la fois suffisamment réaliste pour y reconnaître des phénomènes scientifiquement vérifiables et profondément symbolique dans ses connotations. Les animaux marins qui y figurent ne sont en rien anthropomorphes, mais se démarquent aussi nettement de l'image donnée par les bestiaires, dans la mesure où leurs actions et caractéristiques ne sont pas en soi porteuses de sens. La faune aquatique est à la fois une menace et une présence protectrice, la providence divine déterminant de cas en cas la nature des rencontres entre moines et poissons, baleines et monstres marins. Ces bêtes sont en elles-mêmes moralement neutres, guidées par l'instinct; mais Benedeit exploite ce trait pour mettre en exergue la soumission de ces créatures à la volonté du Créateur, et leur importance pour Brendan et ses compagnons.

Risking the ire of investors in pursuit of long-term value: an interview with Cynthia Carroll, the CEO of Anglo American plc

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how key strategic decisions are made in practice at successful FTSE 100 companies. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based on a semi-structured interview with Ms Cynthia Carroll, Chief Executive of Anglo American plc. Findings – The interview outlines a number of important factors on: the evolution of strategy within Anglo American, strategy execution, leadership at board and executive levels, and capturing synergies within the company. Originality/value – The paper bridges the gap between theory and practice. It provides a practical view and demonstrates how corporate leaders think about key strategic issues

The Devil’s Daughters and a question of translation between Occitan and Anglo-Norman French: ‘De las .vii. filhas del diable’ (British Library Add. MS 17920).

The evidence for vernacular-to-vernacular translation is hard to demonstrate in medieval Romance languages. This article analyses a hypothesis published a century ago that there is an identifiable Anglo-Norman source for an Occitan prose text. Both texts spring from a Latin exemplum in which the seven capital vices are personified as the Devil's daughters, married off to seven social categories (the clergy, knights, peasants, etc.). Although the hypothesis is disproved, it remains that the dialogue between Anglo-Norman French and Occitan has been overlooked, and deserves further exploration.
