Equal opportunity networks, distance-balanced graphs, and Wiener game

Given a graph G and a set X ⊆ V(G), the relative Wiener index of X in G is defined as WX (G) = {u,v}∈X 2  dG(u, v) . The graphs G (of even order) in which for every partition V(G) = V1 +V2 of the vertex set V(G) such that |V1| = |V2| we haveWV1 (G) = WV2 (G) are called equal opportunity graphs. In this note we prove that a graph G of even order is an equal opportunity graph if and only if it is a distance-balanced graph. The latter graphs are known by several characteristic properties, for instance, they are precisely the graphs G in which all vertices u ∈ V(G) have the same total distance DG(u) = v∈V(G) dG(u, v). Some related problems are posed along the way, and the so-called Wiener game is introduced.

Evolutionsbiologie und Schöpfungsglaube – Dilemma?

Die Debatte zwischen Kreationismus und Evolutionsbiologie wirft die Frage bezüglich einer möglichen Verhältnisbestimmung zwischen Naturwissenschaft und Religion im Allgemeinen und dem Umgang mit dieser Problematik in der Schule auf. Die vorliegende Arbeit hat daher neben naturwissenschaftlichen und kreationistischen Vorstellungen auch die theologische Sichtweise berücksichtigt, um die Frage zu klären, ob Naturwissenschaft und Religion eine eindeutige Entscheidung für eine der beiden Perspektiven verlangt oder unter welchen Bedingungen naturwissenschaftliche und religiöse Vorstellungen miteinander in Einklang gebracht werden könnten. In diesem Zusammenhang werden im zweiten Kapitel mögliche Verhältnisbestimmungen zwischen Naturwissenschaft und Theologie aus der Perspektive der Naturwissenschaft, der Perspektive des Kreationismus sowie der Perspektive der Theologie vorgestellt und voneinander unterschieden. Um den zweiten Teil der Fragestellung bezüglich der Umsetzung des Themas in der Schule zu bearbeiten erfolgt im dritten Kapitel zunächst eine Erläuterung der nationalen Bildungsstandards für das Fach Biologie, da sie bei der Entwicklung der in Kapitel fünf vorgestellten Unterrichtssequenz berücksichtigt werden. Kapitel vier beschäftigt sich mit den Zielen, der Vorgehensweise bei der Auswahl der Quellen, sowie der Besonderheit dieser Arbeit bezüglich der Sprache. Im fünften Kapitel schließt sich die bereits erwähnte Unterrichtssequenz an. Sie ermöglicht den Schülerinnen und Schülern einen rationalen, kriteriengeleiteten Vergleich der oben genannten Sichtweisen, um sie darüber hinaus zu einer sachlichen und fachlich fundierten Beurteilung der Diskussion um Evolutionsbiologie und Schöpfungsglaube zu befähigen. Eine Diskussion, in der Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Arbeit besprochen werden, schließt sich an, bevor im letzten Kapitel die zentralen Aussagen zusammengefasst werden.

Integrating top down policies and bottom up practices in Urban and Periurban Agriculture: an Italian dilemma

The paper deals with some relevant and contradictory aspects of urban and peri-urban agriculture in Italy: the traditional exclusion of agricultural areas from the goals of territorial planning; the separation between top-down policies and bottom-up practices; the lack of agricultural policies at local scale. In the first part the paper summarises the weak relation between urban planning and agriculture, showing how in Italy this gap has been only partially overcome by new laws and plans. Moreover the paper focuses on how, due to the lack of suitable solutions coming from regional and local planning, a large number of vibrant initiatives were started by local stakeholders. In order to show the limitations and the potentialities of these various approaches, three peculiar experiences based on Milan, Turin and Pisa are presented. They give a cross-section of the variegated Italian situation, demonstrating that a major challenge in Italian context affects the fields of governance and inclusiveness.

Agile Game: A Project Management Game for Agile Methods

Since mid-1990s, companies have adopted agile methods and incorporated them in their development methodologies. For this reason, future project managers and developers need to have a full understanding of these methods. At present, the university’s approach to agile methods is theoretical and is not reflected during the development of a product and their practical use. The purpose of this project is the creation of a software system in the form of a game, named Agile Game, which simulates their use. The system is designed for use as supplementary material in lectures, to help students understand agile methods, to present their use within a project, and to demonstrate how they differ from traditional project management methodologies. The final system, which is web based, was implemented using PHP, MySQL and JavaScript. It was fully tested against the requirements and evaluated by peer students. The evaluation showed that the majority of users were satisfied with the system but they thought that it should contain more detailed information at every step of the game. For this reason, some parts of the design and the content were reviewed to meet user requirements.

Cooperación Sur-Sur: Análisis de su impacto en la transformación del régimen internacional de la OCDE en materia de cooperación internacional

Las relaciones de cooperación Sur-Sur revoluciona las lógicas tradicionales que dieron base al régimen de la cooperación internacional expedido desde la OCDE. La diferencia entre los donantes llamados “DAC” y los socios “No-DAC” en referencia a los Estados miembros del Comité de Asistencia al Desarrollo establece dos lógicas de cooperación internacional que se contraponen en sus dinámicas pero comparten un objetivo: el desarrollo. Estos dos tipos de relaciones de cooperación se diferencian en cuatro aspectos: calidad de los actores implicados, dirección de la relación, tipo de intercambio y presencia o ausencia del Principio de Condicionalidad. A diferencia de las relaciones de cooperación Norte-Sur donde se establece una relación unidireccional entre el donante y el receptor, canal utilizado para el flujo crediticio y financiero (bien sea a través de créditos o de subvenciones), las relaciones de cooperación Sur-Sur establecen una relación bidireccional. Esta bidireccionalidad hace que la cooperación internacional se convierta en una herramienta de poder relativo para aquellos actores que carecían de peso en el sistema internacional. La carta fundamental de los Estados con economías emergentes será darle voz a aquellos que no la han tenido. A través de relaciones que se catalogan como asociaciones estratégicas, entre sujetos con un similar nivel de desarrollo, el Principio de Condicionalidad como rector de la relación de cooperación, desaparece. Asi, la formación del Grupo de Tareas para la Cooperación Sur-Sur adscrito al DAC es una muestra del cambio estructural del régimen de la cooperación internacional, y más aún, de las dinámicas tradicionales del sistema internacional.

Introduction to Game Design and Development

This is the introductory lecture to COMP3218. We introduce ourselves, cover the philosophy of the course, the structure and assessment process, and lead an initial game design exercise.
