Supported ceramic membranes have been produced by the sol-casting procedure from aqueous colloidal suspensions prepared by the sol-gel route. Coatings on a tubular alumina support have been successfully performed leading to crack free layers. Samples have been sintered at 400, 500 and 600 degreesC, and the effect of heating treatment on the nanostructure and on the ultrafiltration properties are analyzed. The characterization has been done by high resolution scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, water permeation and cut-off determination using polyethylene glycol standard solutions. The micrographs have revealed that grains and pore size increase with the temperature, whereas their shape remains invariant. This results is in agreements with N-2 adsorption-desorption analyses, which have revealed that the mean pore size diameter increases from 4 to 10 nm as the sintering temperature increases from 400 to 600 degreesC, while the total porosity remains constant. Furthermore, the tortuosity, calculated from water permeability, is essentially invariant with the sintering temperatures. The membranes cut-off, determined with a retention rate equal to 95%, are 3500, 6500 and 9000 g . mol(-1) for 400, 500 and 600 degreesC, respectively, showing that the permeation properties of SnO2 ultrafiltration membranes can easily be controlled by sintering condition.

SnO2 thin films were obtained by the sol-gel method starting from inorganic precursor solutions. In this work, we compare the structure of undoped and Sb-doped SnO2 films prepared by dip-coating. The films were deposited on quartz substrates and then fired at different temperatures ranging from 383 up to 1173 K. The density and the thickness of the films were determined by X-ray reflectivity (XRR) and their porous nanostructure was characterized by grazing-incidence small angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS). XRR results corresponding to undoped and Sb-doped samples indicate a monotonous decrease in film thickness when they are fired at increasing temperatures. At same time, the apparent density of undoped samples exhibits a progressive increase while for Sb-doped films it remains invariant up to 973 K and then increases for T = 1173 K. Anisotropic GISAXS patterns of both films, Sb-doped and undoped, fired above 573 K indicate the presence of elongated pores with their major axis perpendicular to the film surface. For all firing temperatures the nanopores in doped samples are larger than in undoped ones. This suggests that Sb-doping favours the pore growth hindering the film densification. At the highest firing temperature (1173 K) this effect is reversed.

Nd3+-based organic/inorganic hybrids have potential application in the field of integrated optics. Attractive sol-gel derived di-urea and di-urethane cross-linked poly (oxyethylene) (POE)/siloxane hybrids (di-ureasils and di-urethanesils, respectively) doped with neodymium triflate (Nd(CF3SO3)(3)) were examined by Fourier transform mid-infrared (FT-IR), Raman (FT-Raman), Si-29 magic-angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and photoluminescence spectroscopies, and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The goals of this work were to determine which cation coordinating site of the host matrix (ether oxygen atoms or carbonyl oxygen atoms) is active in each of the materials analyzed, its influence on the nanostructure of the samples and its relation with the photoluminescence properties. The main conclusion derived from this study is that the hydrogen-bonded associations formed throughout the materials play a major role in the hybrids nanostructure and photoluminescence properties.

Indium-tin oxide nanostructures were deposited by excimer laser ablation in a nitrogen atmosphere using catalyst-free oxidized silicon substrates at 500 degrees C. Up to 1 mbar, nanowires grew by the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism, with the amount of liquid material decreasing as the deposition pressure increased. The nanowires present the single-crystalline cubic bixbyite structure, oriented < 100 >. For the highest pressure used, pyramids were formed and no sign of liquid material could be observed, indicating that these structures grew by a vapor-solid mechanism. (c) 2006 Acta Materialia Inc. Alkaline metal doped organic - inorganic hybrids have potential applications in the field of portable energy sources. Attractive sol - gel derived urea cross-linked polyether, siloxane - PPO ( poly( propylene oxide)) hybrids doped with sodium salts ( NaClO4 and NaBF4) were examined by multi-spectroscopic approach that includes complex impedance, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), Si-29 and Na-23 magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR/MAS), Na K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and Raman spectroscopies. The goals of this work were to determine which cation coordinating site of the host matrix ( ether oxygen atoms or carbonyl oxygen atoms) is active in each of the materials analyzed, its influence on the nanostructure of the samples and its relation with the thermal and electrical properties. The main conclusion derived from this study is that the NaBF4 salt has a much lower solubility in the hybrid matrix than the NaClO4 salt. Furthermore, the addition of a large amount of salt plays a major role in the hybrid nanostructure and electrical properties, modifying the PPO chain conformation, weakening or breaking the hydrogen bond of the polyether - urea associations and changing the polycondensation and aggregation processes involving the siloxane species.

A new architecture for dye-sensitized solar cells is employed, based on a nanostructured transparent conducting oxide protruding from the substrate, covered with a separate active oxide layer. The objective is to decrease electron-hole recombination. The concept was tested by growing branched indium-tin oxide nanowires on glass using pulsed laser deposition followed by deposition of a sputtered titanium dioxide layer covering the wires. The separation of charge generation and charge transport functions opens many possibilities for dye-sensitized solar cell optimization. (c) 2007 Acta Materialia. Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. We investigate electrical properties of InAs/InP semiconductor nanostructures by conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM) and current measurements at low temperatures in processed devices. Different conductances and threshold voltages for current onset were observed for each type of nanostructure. In particular, the extremity of the wire could be compared to a dot with similar dimensions. The processed devices were used in order to access the in-plane conductance of an assembly of a reduced number of nanostructures. Here, fluctuations on I-V curves at low temperatures (<40 K) were observed. At these low temperatures and for a suitable range of applied voltages, random telegraph noise (RTN) in the current was observed for devices with dots. These fluctuations can be associated to electrons trapped in dots, as suggested by numerical simulations. A crossover from a semiconductor-like to a metallic transport behavior is also observed for similar parameters. © 2006 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA.

The formation of sulfated zirconia films from a sol-gel derived aqueous suspension is subjected to double-optical monitoring during batch dip coating. Interpretation of interferometric patterns, previously obscured by a variable refractive index, is now made possible by addition of its direct measurement by a polarimetric technique in real time. Significant sensitivity of the resulting physical thickness and refractive index curves (uncertainties of ±7 nm and ±0.005, respectively) to temporal film evolution is shown under different withdrawal speeds. As a first contribution to quantitative understanding of temporal film formation with varying nanostructure during dip coating, detailed analysis is directed to the stage of the process dominated by mass drainage, whose simple modeling with temporal t-1/2 dependence is verified experimentally. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Bacterial cellulose (BC) has established to be a remarkably versatile biomaterial and can be used in wide variety of applied scientific endeavours, especially for medical devices. In fact, biomedical devices recently have gained a significant amount of attention because of an increased interest in tissue-engineered products for both wound care and the regeneration of damaged or diseased organs. Due to its unique nanostructure and properties, microbial cellulose is a natural candidate for numerous medical and tissue-engineered applications. Hydrophilic bacterial cellulose fibers of an average diameter of 50 nm are produced by the bacterium Acetobacter xylinum, using a fermentation process. The microbial cellulose fiber has a high degree of crystallinity. Using direct nanomechanical measurement, determined that these fibers are very strong and when used in combination with other biocompatible materials, produce nanocomposites particularly suitable for use in human and veterinary medicine. Moreover, the nanostructure and morphological similarities with collagen make BC attractive for cell immobilization and cell support. The architecture of BC materials can be engineered over length scales ranging from nano to macro by controlling the biofabrication process. The chapter describes the fundamentals, purification and morphological investigation of bacterial cellulose. This chapter deals with the modification of microbial cellulose and how to increase the compatibility between cellulosic surfaces and a variety of plastic materials. Furthermore, provides deep knowledge of fascinating current and future applications of bacterial cellulose and their nanocomposites especially in the medical field, materials with properties closely mimic that of biological organs and tissues were described. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.
