The spectroscopy and metastability of the carbon dioxide doubly charged ion, the CO22+ dication, have been studied with photoionization experiments: time-of-flight photoelectron photoelectron coincidence (TOF-PEPECO), threshold photoelectrons coincidence (TPEsCO), and threshold photoelectrons and ion coincidence (TPEsCO ion coincidence) spectroscopies. Vibrational structure is observed in TOF-PEPECO and TPEsCO spectra of the ground and first two excited states. The vibrational structure is dominated by the symmetric stretch except in the TPEsCO spectrum of the ground state where an antisymmetric stretch progression is observed. All three vibrational frequencies are deduced for the ground state and symmetric stretch and bending frequencies are deduced for the first two excited states. Some vibrational structure of higher electronic states is also observed. The threshold for double ionization of carbon dioxide is reported as 37.340+/-0.010 eV. The fragmentation of energy selected CO22+ ions has been investigated with TPEsCO ion coincidence spectroscopy. A band of metastable states from similar to38.7 to similar to41 eV above the ground state of neutral CO2 has been observed in the experimental time window of similar to0.1-2.3 mus with a tendency towards shorter lifetimes at higher energies. It is proposed that the metastability is due to slow spin forbidden conversion from bound excited singlet states to unbound continuum states of the triplet ground state. Another result of this investigation is the observation of CO++O+ formation in indirect dissociative double photoionization below the threshold for formation of CO22+. The threshold for CO++O+ formation is found to be 35.56+/-0.10 eV or lower, which is more than 2 eV lower than previous measurements. (C) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

Experimental data of the adsorption of reactive dyestuffs onto Filtrasorb 400 activated carbon (FS400) were determined in an equilibrium isotherm study. As most industrial wastewater contains more than one pollutant, an investigation into the effect of multisolute systems (using the unhydrolysed form of the reactive dyes) on the adsorption capacity was undertaken. Equilibrium isotherm models were employed to describe the adsorption capacities of single, binary and ternary dye solutions. The results of these analyses showed that adsorption of reactive dyes from single and multisolute systems can be successfully described by Langmuir, and Redlich–Peterson equilibrium isotherm models. Experimental data indicated that competitive adsorption for active sites on the carbon surface results in a reduction in the overall uptake capacity of the reactive dyes investigated.

Telematic tools are very important for our lives in the present era and moreover this idea is made more evident if we analyse young people behaviours. However, it seems that the possibilities that these tools allow subjects from a professional point of view, beyond the purely playful aspects, are still not fully exploited both by subjects, neither by educational institutions where they learn. Our work studies the uses of social media in the context of university students. In order to this we have designed a research based on quantitative methodology with a survey. We have applied a questionnaire to students in the University of Murcia. The questionnaire was answered by 487 students in the first half of 2014. The survey results confirm our hypothesis that social networks are part of the basic and habitual tools of communication between the youth of our university and eminently used for leisure purposes, and that the tools used for more academic activities are those allowing greater control of privacy.

The dilute acid hydrolysis of grass and cellulose with phosphoric acid was undertaken in a microwave reactor system. The experimental data and reaction kinetic analysis indicate that this is a potential process for cellulose and hemi-cellulose hydrolysis, due to a rapid hydrolysis reaction at moderate temperatures. The optimum conditions for grass hydrolysis were found to be 2.5% phosphoric acid at a temperature of 175 degrees C. It was found that sugar degradation occurred at acid concentrations greater than 2.5% (v/v) and temperatures greater than 175 degrees C. In a further series of experiments, the kinetics of dilute acid hydrolysis of cellulose was investigated varying phosphoric acid concentration and reaction temperatures. The experimental data indicate that the use of microwave technology can successfully facilitate dilute acid hydrolysis of cellulose allowing high yields of glucose in short reaction times. The optimum conditions gave a yield of 90% glucose. A pseudo-homogeneous consecutive first order reaction was assumed and the reaction rate constants were calculated as: k(1) = 0.0813 s(-1); k(2) = 0.0075 s(-1), which compare favourably with reaction rate constants found in conventional non-microwave reaction systems. The kinetic analysis would indicate that the primary advantages of employing microwave heating were to: achieve a high rate constant at moderate temperatures: and to prevent 'hot spot' formation within the reactor, which would have cause localised degradation of glucose.

The method described here cannot fully replace the analysis of large columns by small test columns (microcolumns). The procedure, however, is suitable for speeding up the determination of adsorption parameters of dye onto the adsorbent and for speeding up the initial screening of a large adsorbent collection that can be tedious if a several adsorbents and adsorption conditions must be tested. The performance of methylene blue (MB), a basic dye, Cibacron reactive black (RB) and Cibacron reactive yellow (RY) was predicted in this way and the influence of initial dye concentration and other adsorption conditions on the adsorption behaviour were demonstrated.

The feasibility of using diatomite for the removal of the problematic reactive dyes as well as basic dyes from textile wastewater was investigated. Methylene blue, Cibacron reactive black and reactive yellow dyes were considered. Physical characteristics of diatomite such as pH(solution), pH(ZPC), surface area, Fourier transform infrared, and scanning electron microscopy were investigated. The surface area of diatomite was found to be 27.80 m(2) g(-1) and the pH(ZPC) occurred around pH of 5.4. The results indicated that the surface charge of diatomite decreased as the pH of the solution increased with the maximum methylene blue removal from aqueous solution occurring at basic pH of around (1011). Adsorption isotherms of diatomite with methylene blue, hydrolysed reactive black and yellow dyes were constructed at different pH values, initial dye concentrations and particle sizes. The experimental results were fitted to the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Henry models. The study indicated that electrostatic interactions play an important role in the adsorption of dyes onto diatomite. A model of the adsorption mechanism of methylene blue onto diatomite is proposed. The effect of dye molecular charges on their adsorption from solution was investigated by using different types of activated carbon adsorbents. Two types of model systems were used representing cationic and anionic dyes. Screening investigations using single point tests were used throughout the study. Cationic dyes, of which Methylene Blue is an example, showed a higher adsorption tendency towards activated carbon over anionic dyes represented by an ate-type reactive compound. Of the number of activated carbons tested, only one of the adsorbents showed an exception to this behavior, and a good relation was observed between Methylene Blue capacity and activated carbon performance. The high capacity of cationic dyes in comparison to anionic dyes was also evident in the results obtained by a preliminary kinetic study carried out on the selected systems. Surface net charge of activated carbon and the nature of attractions between the molecules were suggested to be one of the reasons attributed for this behavior.

We have investigated the angular variation in elastic x-ray scattering from a dense, laser-shock-compressed aluminum foil. A comparison of the experiment with simulations using an embedded atom potential in a molecular dynamics simulation shows a significantly better agreement than simulations based on an unscreened one-component plasma model. These data illustrate, experimentally, the importance of screening for the dense plasma static structure factor.
