Sleep stage identification is the first step in modern sleep disorder diagnostics process. K-complex is an indicator for the sleep stage 2. However, due to the ambiguity of the translation of the medical standards into a computer-based procedure, reliability of automated K-complex detection from the EEG wave is still far from expectation. More specifically, there are some significant barriers to the research of automatic K-complex detection. First, there is no adequate description of K-complex that makes it difficult to develop automatic detection algorithm. Second, human experts only provided the label for whether a whole EEG segment contains K-complex or not, rather than individual labels for each subsegment. These barriers render most pattern recognition algorithms inapplicable in detecting K-complex. In this paper, we attempt to address these two challenges, by designing a new feature extraction method that can transform visual features of the EEG wave with any length into mathematical representation and proposing a hybrid-synergic machine learning method to build a K-complex classifier. The tenfold cross-validation results indicate that both the accuracy and the precision of this proposed model are at least as good as a human expert in K-complex detection.

The explosion of the Web 2:0 platforms, with massive volume of user generated data, has presented many new opportunities as well as challenges for organizations in understanding consumer's behavior to support for business planning process. Feature based sentiment mining has been an emerging area in providing tools for automated opinion discovery and summarization to help business managers with achieving such goals. However, the current feature based sentiment mining systems were only able to provide some forms of sentiments summary with respect to product features, but impossible to provide insight into the decision making process of consumers. In this paper, we will present a relatively new decision support method based on Choquet Integral aggregation function, Shapley value and Interaction Index which is able to address such requirements of business managers. Using a study case of Hotel industry, we will demonstrate how this technique can be applied to effectively model the user's preference of (hotel) features. The presented method has potential to extend the practical capability of sentiment mining area, while, research findings and analysis are useful in helping business managers to define new target customers and to plan more effective marketing strategies.

Speaker recognition is the process of automatically recognizing the speaker by analyzing individual information contained in the speech waves. In this paper, we discuss the development of an intelligent system for text-dependent speaker recognition. The system comprises two main modules, a wavelet-based signal-processing module for feature extraction of speech waves, and an artificial-neural-network-based classifier module to identify and categorize the speakers. Wavelet is used in de-noising and in compressing the speech signals. The wavelet family that we used is the Daubechies Wavelets. After extracting the necessary features from the speech waves, the features were then fed to a neural-network-based classifier to identify the speakers. We have implemented the Fuzzy ARTMAP (FAM) network in the classifier module to categorize the de-noised and compressed signals. The proposed intelligent learning system has been applied to a case study of text-dependent speaker recognition problem.

Textural image classification technologies have been extensively explored and widely applied in many areas. It is advantageous to combine both the occurrence and spatial distribution of local patterns to describe a texture. However, most existing state-of-the-art approaches for textural image classification only employ the occurrence histogram of local patterns to describe textures, without considering their co-occurrence information. And they are usually very time-consuming because of the vector quantization involved. Moreover, those feature extraction paradigms are implemented at a single scale. In this paper we propose a novel multi-scale local pattern co-occurrence matrix (MS_LPCM) descriptor to characterize textural images through four major steps. Firstly, Gaussian filtering pyramid preprocessing is employed to obtain multi-scale images; secondly, a local binary pattern (LBP) operator is applied on each textural image to create a LBP image; thirdly, the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) is utilized to extract local pattern co-occurrence matrix (LPCM) from LBP images as the features; finally, all LPCM features from the same textural image at different scales are concatenated as the final feature vectors for classification. The experimental results on three benchmark databases in this study have shown a higher classification accuracy and lower computing cost as compared with other state-of-the-art algorithms.

This paper addresses the problem of speaker recognition from speech signals. The study focuses on the development of a speaker recognition system comprising two modules: a wavelet-based feature extractor, and a neural-network-based classifier. We have conducted a number of experiments to investigate the applicability of Discrete Wavelet Transform (D WT) in extracting discriminative features from the speech signals, and have examined various models from the Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) family of neural networks in classijjing the extracted features. The results indicate that DWT could be a potential feature extraction tool for speaker recognition. In addition, the ART-based classijiers have yielded very promising recognition accuracy at more than 81%.

Introduction : Depression is a major issue worldwide and is seen as a significant health problem. Stigma and patient denial, clinical experience, time limitations, and reliability of psychometrics are barriers to the clinical diagnoses of depression. Thus, the establishment of an automated system that could detect such abnormalities would assist medical experts in their decision-making process. This paper reviews existing methods for the automated detection of depression from brain structural magnetic resonance images (sMRI).Methods : Relevant sources were identified from various databases and online sites using a combination of keywords and terms including depression, major depressive disorder, detection, classification, and MRI databases. Reference lists of chosen articles were further reviewed for associated publications. Results : The paper introduces a generic structure for representing and describing the methods developed for the detection of depression from sMRI of the brain. It consists of a number of components including acquisition and preprocessing, feature extraction, feature selection, and classification. Conclusion : Automated sMRI-based detection methods have the potential to provide an objective measure of depression, hence improving the confidence level in the diagnosis and prognosis of depression.

Effective spectral representations of shape region are proposed in literature. On the other hand, a significant spatial characteristic of shape region is shape contour because human beings discriminate shapes mainly by their contour features. It is proposed that a descriptor is obtained by complementing the spectral representation of shape region with the spectral representation of shape contour. Such a descriptor, obtained by explicitly combining two (or more) descriptors is termed composite descriptor. A composite descriptor is proposed; the effectiveness of the composite descriptor to represent shape region is evaluated.

Text clustering can be considered as a four step process consisting of feature extraction, text representation, document clustering and cluster interpretation. Most text clustering models consider text as an unordered collection of words. However the semantics of text would be better captured if word sequences are taken into account.

In this paper we propose a sequence based text clustering model where four novel sequence based components are introduced in each of the four steps in the text clustering process.

Experiments conducted on the Reuters dataset and Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) news archives demonstrate the advantage of the proposed sequence based model, in terms of capturing context with semantics, accuracy and speed, compared to clustering of documents based on single words and n-gram based models.

A hierarchical intrusion detection model is proposed to detect both anomaly and misuse attacks. In order to further speed up the training and testing, PCA-based feature extraction algorithm is used to reduce the dimensionality of the data. A PCA-based algorithm is used to filter normal data out in the upper level. The experiment results show that PCA can reduce noise in the original data set and the PCA-based algorithm can reach the desirable performance.

Understanding neural functions requires knowledge from analysing electrophysiological data. The process of assigning spikes of a multichannel signal into clusters, called spike sorting, is one of the important problems in such analysis. There have been various automated spike sorting techniques with both advantages and disadvantages regarding accuracy and computational costs. Therefore, developing spike sorting methods that are highly accurate and computationally inexpensive is always a challenge in the biomedical engineering practice.

In neuroscience, the extracellular actions potentials of neurons are the most important signals, which are called spikes. However, a single extracellular electrode can capture spikes from more than one neuron. Spike sorting is an important task to diagnose various neural activities. The more we can understand neurons the more we can cure more neural diseases. The process of sorting these spikes is typically made in some steps which are detection, feature extraction and clustering. In this paper we propose to use the Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) to extract spike features associated with Hidden Markov model (HMM) in the clustering step. Our results show that using MFCC features can differentiate between spikes more clearly than the other feature extraction methods, and also using HMM as a clustering algorithm also yields a better sorting accuracy.

Neural spikes define the human brain function. An accurate extraction of spike features leads to better understanding of brain functionality. The main challenge of feature extraction is to mitigate the effect of strong background noises. To address this problem, we introduce a new feature representation for neural spikes based on Cepstrum of multichannel recordings. Simulation results indicated that the proposed method is more robust than the existing Haar wavelet method.

Spike sorting plays an important role in analysing electrophysiological data and understanding neural functions. Developing spike sorting methods that are highly accurate and computationally inexpensive is always a challenge in the biomedical engineering practice. This paper proposes an automatic unsupervised spike sorting method using the landmark-based spectral clustering (LSC) method in connection with features extracted by the locality preserving projection (LPP) technique. Gap statistics is employed to evaluate the number of clusters before the LSC can be performed. Experimental results show that LPP spike features are more discriminative than those of the popular wavelet transformation (WT). Accordingly, the proposed method LPP-LSC demonstrates a significant dominance compared to the existing method that is the combination between WT feature extraction and the superparamagnetic clustering. LPP and LSC are both linear algorithms that help reduce computational burden and thus their combination can be applied into realtime spike analysis.
