This paper analyzed the energy flow of a route currently designed to transport ethanol from the Midwest region of Brazil for exportation, more precisely from the city of Aparecida do Taboado (MS) to the port of São Sebastiao (SP). The route studied a single modal combined into two pieces, duct - duct. The direct and indirect energy, involved in the operations were used to account for the inputs and outputs of energy from and into the system. The energy input and output were the variables, diesel fuel, lubricants, greases, indirect energy consumption of machinery and equipment, power consumption of labor, the energy consumption and energy consumption in depreciation and maintenance of roads. We found that this route has specific energy consumption of 0,14 MJ km-1 m-3 . The Net Energy Gain (GEl), the Energy Efficiency global (EEg) and Renewable Energy Balance (BEr), which were the energy indicators adopted in this study were obtained respectively: 1.585.958.977,00 MJ; 200,72 and 1.593.900.000,00MJ.

We have explored the effects of atmospheric environment on Kelvin force microscopy (KFM) measurements of potential difference between different regions of test polycrystalline diamond surfaces. The diamond films were deposited by microwave plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition, which naturally produces hydrogen terminations on the surface of the films formed. Selected regions were patterned by electron-beam lithography and chemical terminations of oxygen or fluorine were created by exposure to an oxygen or fluorine plasma source. For KFM imaging, the samples were mounted in a hood with a constant flow of helium gas. Successive images were taken over a 5-h period showing the effect of the environment on KFM imaging. We conclude that the helium flow removes water molecules adsorbed on the surface of the samples, resulting in differences in surface potential between adjacent regions. The degree of water removal is different for surfaces with different terminations. The results highlight the importance of taking into account the atmospheric environment when carrying out KFM analysis. (C) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

In this work, we present a class of geometries which describes wormholes in a Randall-Sundrum brane model, focusing on de Sitter backgrounds. Maximal extensions of the solutions are constructed and their causal structures are discussed. A perturbative analysis is developed, where matter and gravitational perturbations are studied. Analytical results for the quasinormal spectra are obtained and an extensive numerical survey is conducted. Our results indicate that the wormhole geometries presented are stable.

Organic-inorganic composite membranes were prepared from membranes of the bio-polymer bacterial cellulose (BC) and organic-inorganic sal composed of nanoparticulate boehmite and epoxi modified siloxane. Bacterial cellulose membranes are obtained in a highly hydrated state (1% cellulose and 99% cellulose) from cultures of Gluconacetobacter xylinus and could be used in the never-dried or in the dried state. Depending on the use of dried or never-dried BC membranes two main kinds of composites were obtained. In the first one dried BC membranes coated with the hybrid sol have lead to transparent membranes displaying a hi-phase structure where the two components could be easily distinguished, with individual structures preserved. A decrease was observed for tensile strength (50.5 MPa) and Young's Modulus (2.8 GPa) when compared to pure BC membrane (112.5 MPa and 12.7 GPa). Elongation at break was observed to increase (2.5% against 1.5% observed for BC). When never-dried BC membranes were used transparent membranes were also obtained, however an improvement was observed for mechanical properties (tensile strength - 116 MPa and Young's Modulus - 13.7 GPa). A lower value was obtained for the elongation at break (1.3%). In the last case the interaction between the two-phases lead to changes in the cellulose crystallinity as shown by X rays diffraction results. Multifunctional transparent membranes displaying the cellulose structure in one side and the boehmite-siloxane structure at the opposite face could find special applications in opto-electronics or biomedical areas taking advantage of the different chemical nature of the two components. We investigated whether Melipona quadrifasciata worker mandibular gland secretions contribute directly to their cuticular hydrocarbon profile. The mandibular gland secretion composition and cuticular surface compounds of newly emerged worker bees, nurse bees, and foragers were determined by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry and compared. Both the mandibular gland secretions and the cuticular surface compounds of all worker stages were found to be composed almost exclusively of hydrocarbons. Although the relative proportion of hydrocarbons from the cuticular surface and gland secretion was statistically different, there was a high similarity in the qualitative composition between these structures in all groups of bees.

Solanum lycocarpum (Solanaceae) is native to the Brazilian Cerrado. Fruits of this species contain the glycoalkaloids solasonine (SN) and solamargine (SM), which display antiparasitic and anticancer properties. A method has been developed for the extraction and HPLC-UV analysis of the SN and SM in different parts of S. lycocarpum, mainly comprising ripe and unripe fruits, leaf, and stem. This analytical method was validated and gave good detection response with linearity over a dynamic range of 0.77-1000.00 mu g mL(-1) and recovery in the range of 80.92-91.71%, allowing a reliable quantitation of the target compounds. Unripe fruits displayed higher concentrations of glycoalkaloids (1.04% +/- 0.01 of SN and 0.69% +/- 0.00 of SM) than the ripe fruits (0.83% +/- 0.02 of SN and 0.60% +/- 0.01 of SM). Quantitation of glycoalkaloids in the alkaloidic extract gave 45.09% +/- 1.14 of SN and 44.37% +/- 0.60 of SM, respectively.

Metarhizium anisopliae is one of the most studied agents of biological control of several arthropod plagues, including the cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus. Studies have been conducted to assess the fungal complex infection process towards its hosts. To accomplish that, mutant strains overexpressing or lacking assumed determinant genes for the process were constructed over the years. A fundamental experiment to demonstrate a particular gene or set of genes participation is the bioassay. The comparison of bioassays using wild and engineered strains is an essential tool to affirm a given gene is crucial in the process. Therefore, the in vitro bioassays should mimic the results obtained in tests under field conditions. In this study, tests under laboratory and filed conditions were done and a correlation analysis was performed in order to statistically validate in vitro bioassays. Tick egg laying, larvae hatching and host mortality were recorded in each experiment through 21 days, both under laboratory and field conditions. In all cases, M. anisopliae treatments were statistically different from the control treatments. A linear regression analysis was performed between the cases. Laboratory results showed a statistically significant correlation with the field conditions using the Pearson's Correlation Test (P < 0.01 host mortality - 0.969, tick egg laying - 0.977 and larvae hatching - 0.956). These results legitimize the in vitro bioassays and, therefore, constitute them as a valid tool for studying this fungus behavior, so they can be used to infer M. anisopliae response towards R. (Boophilus) microplus.

This population-based health survey was carried out in Florianopolis, Brazil, to assess the association between adult systolic blood pressure (SBP) and contextual income level, after controlling for potential individual-level confounders. A statistically significant negative association between SBP levels and contextual income was identified after adjusting for individual-level characteristics. SBP levels in the highest and in the intermediate tertiles of contextual income were 5.78 and 2.82 mmHg lower, respectively, than that observed in the bottom tertile. The findings suggest an association between income area level and blood pressure, regardless of well-known individual-level hypertension risk factors. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This work reports the investigation on the structural differences between InAs quantum rings and their precursor quantum dots species as well as on the presence of piezoelectric fields and asymmetries in these nanostructures. The experimental results show significant reduction in the ring dimensions when the sizes of capped and uncapped ring and dot samples are compared. The iso-lattice parameter mapped by grazing-incidence x-ray diffraction has revealed the lateral extent of strained regions in the buried rings. A comparison between strain and composition of dot and ring structures allows inferring on how the ring formation and its final configuration may affect optical response parameters. Based on the experimental observations, a discussion has been introduced on the effective potential profile to emulate theoretically the ring-shape confinement. The effects of confinement and strain field modulation on electron and hole band structures are simulated by a multiband k.p calculation. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. Introduction: This study examined the anatomy of 4-rooted maxillary second molars by using micro computed tomography. Methods: Twenty-five 4-rooted maxillary second molars were scanned to evaluate the size and curvature of the roots; the distance and spatial configuration between some anatomical landmarks; the number of root canals and the position of apical foramina; the occurrence of fusion of roots and enamel pearls; the configuration of the canal at the apical third; the cross-sectional appearance, the volume, and surface area of the root canals. Data were compared by using analysis of variance post hoc Tukey test (alpha = 0.05). Results: The specimens were classified as types I (n = 16), II (n = 7), and III (n = 2). The size of the roots was similar (P > .05), and most of them presented straight with 1 canal, except the mesiobuccal that showed 2 canals in 24% of the samples. The configuration of the pulp chamber was mostly irregular quadrilateral-shaped. The lowest mean distance of the orifices was observed between the buccal roots (P < .05). Accessory canals were present mostly in the apical third. Location of the apical foramina varied considerably. Fusion of roots and enamel pearls occurred in 44% and 8% of the samples, respectively. Mean distance from the pulp chamber floor to the furcation was 2.15 +/- 0.57 mm. No statistical differences were found in the bi-dimensional and 3-dimensional analyses (P > .05). Conclusions: All analyzed parameters showed differences between roots, except for the length of the roots, the configuration of the canals at the apical third, cross-sectional appearance, volume, and surface area of the canals. Low-level laser irradiation (LLLI) and recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein type 2 (rhBMP-2) have been used to stimulate bone formation. LLLI stimulates proliferation of osteoblast precursor cells and cell differentiation and rhBMP-2 recruits osteoprogenitor cells to the bone healing area. This in vivo study evaluated the effects of LLLI and rhBMP-2 on the bone healing process in rats. Critical bone defects were created in the parietal bone in 42 animals, and the animals were divided into six treatment groups: (1) laser, (2) 7 mu g of rhBMP-2, (3) laser and 7 mu g of rhBMP-2, (4) 7 mu g of rhBMP-2/monoolein gel, (5) laser and 7 mu g rhBMP-2/monoolein gel, and (6) critical bone defect controls. A gallium-aluminum-arsenide diode laser was used (wavelength 780 nm, output power 60 mW, beam area 0.04 cm(2), irradiation time 80 s, energy density 120 J/cm(2), irradiance 1.5 W/cm(2)). After 15 days, the calvarial tissues were removed for histomorphometric analysis. Group 3 defects showed higher amounts of newly formed bone (37.89%) than the defects of all the other groups (P < 0.05). The amounts of new bone in defects of groups 1 and 4 were not significantly different from each other (24.00% and 24.75%, respectively), but were significantly different from the amounts in the other groups (P < 0.05). The amounts of new bone in the defects of groups 2 and 5 were not significantly different from each other (31.42% and 31.96%, respectively), but were significantly different from the amounts in the other groups (P < 0.05). Group 6 defects had 14.10% new bone formation, and this was significantly different from the amounts in the other groups (P < 0.05). It can be concluded that LLLI administered during surgery effectively accelerated healing of critical bone defects filled with pure rhBMP-2, achieving a better result than LLLI alone or the use of rhBMP-2 alone.
