This paper reviews the key features of an environment to support domain users in spatial information system (SIS) development. It presents a full design and prototype implementation of a repository system for the storage and management of metadata, focusing on a subset of spatial data integrity constraint classes. The system is designed to support spatial system development and customization by users within the domain that the system will operate.

The schema of an information system can significantly impact the ability of end users to efficiently and effectively retrieve the information they need. Obtaining quickly the appropriate data increases the likelihood that an organization will make good decisions and respond adeptly to challenges. This research presents and validates a methodology for evaluating, ex ante, the relative desirability of alternative instantiations of a model of data. In contrast to prior research, each instantiation is based on a different formal theory. This research theorizes that the instantiation that yields the lowest weighted average query complexity for a representative sample of information requests is the most desirable instantiation for end-user queries. The theory was validated by an experiment that compared end-user performance using an instantiation of a data structure based on the relational model of data with performance using the corresponding instantiation of the data structure based on the object-relational model of data. Complexity was measured using three different Halstead metrics: program length, difficulty, and effort. For a representative sample of queries, the average complexity using each instantiation was calculated. As theorized, end users querying the instantiation with the lower average complexity made fewer semantic errors, i.e., were more effective at composing queries. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Collaborate Filtering is one of the most popular recommendation algorithms. Most Collaborative Filtering algorithms work with a static set of data. This paper introduces a novel approach to providing recommendations using Collaborative Filtering when user rating is received over an incoming data stream. In an incoming stream there are massive amounts of data arriving rapidly making it impossible to save all the records for later analysis. By dynamically building a decision tree for every item as data arrive, the incoming data stream is used effectively although an inevitable trade off between accuracy and amount of memory used is introduced. By adding a simple personalization step using a hierarchy of the items, it is possible to improve the predicted ratings made by each decision tree and generate recommendations in real-time. Empirical studies with the dynamically built decision trees show that the personalization step improves the overall predicted accuracy.

There has been an increased demand for characterizing user access patterns using web mining techniques since the informative knowledge extracted from web server log files can not only offer benefits for web site structure improvement but also for better understanding of user navigational behavior. In this paper, we present a web usage mining method, which utilize web user usage and page linkage information to capture user access pattern based on Probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis (PLSA) model. A specific probabilistic model analysis algorithm, EM algorithm, is applied to the integrated usage data to infer the latent semantic factors as well as generate user session clusters for revealing user access patterns. Experiments have been conducted on real world data set to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The results have shown that the presented method is capable of characterizing the latent semantic factors and generating user profile in terms of weighted page vectors, which may reflect the common access interest exhibited by users among same session cluster.

Collaborative recommendation is one of widely used recommendation systems, which recommend items to visitor on a basis of referring other's preference that is similar to current user. User profiling technique upon Web transaction data is able to capture such informative knowledge of user task or interest. With the discovered usage pattern information, it is likely to recommend Web users more preferred content or customize the Web presentation to visitors via collaborative recommendation. In addition, it is helpful to identify the underlying relationships among Web users, items as well as latent tasks during Web mining period. In this paper, we propose a Web recommendation framework based on user profiling technique. In this approach, we employ Probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis (PLSA) to model the co-occurrence activities and develop a modified k-means clustering algorithm to build user profiles as the representatives of usage patterns. Moreover, the hidden task model is derived by characterizing the meaningful latent factor space. With the discovered user profiles, we then choose the most matched profile, which possesses the closely similar preference to current user and make collaborative recommendation based on the corresponding page weights appeared in the selected user profile. The preliminary experimental results performed on real world data sets show that the proposed approach is capable of making recommendation accurately and efficiently.

The Internet of Things (IoT) consists of a worldwide “network of networks,” composed by billions of interconnected heterogeneous devices denoted as things or “Smart Objects” (SOs). Significant research efforts have been dedicated to port the experience gained in the design of the Internet to the IoT, with the goal of maximizing interoperability, using the Internet Protocol (IP) and designing specific protocols like the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP), which have been widely accepted as drivers for the effective evolution of the IoT. This first wave of standardization can be considered successfully concluded and we can assume that communication with and between SOs is no longer an issue. At this time, to favor the widespread adoption of the IoT, it is crucial to provide mechanisms that facilitate IoT data management and the development of services enabling a real interaction with things. Several reference IoT scenarios have real-time or predictable latency requirements, dealing with billions of device collecting and sending an enormous quantity of data. These features create a new need for architectures specifically designed to handle this scenario, hear denoted as “Big Stream”. In this thesis a new Big Stream Listener-based Graph architecture is proposed. Another important step, is to build more applications around the Web model, bringing about the Web of Things (WoT). As several IoT testbeds have been focused on evaluating lower-layer communication aspects, this thesis proposes a new WoT Testbed aiming at allowing developers to work with a high level of abstraction, without worrying about low-level details. Finally, an innovative SOs-driven User Interface (UI) generation paradigm for mobile applications in heterogeneous IoT networks is proposed, to simplify interactions between users and things.

Multidimensional compound optimization is a new paradigm in the drug discovery process, yielding efficiencies during early stages and reducing attrition in the later stages of drug development. The success of this strategy relies heavily on understanding this multidimensional data and extracting useful information from it. This paper demonstrates how principled visualization algorithms can be used to understand and explore a large data set created in the early stages of drug discovery. The experiments presented are performed on a real-world data set comprising biological activity data and some whole-molecular physicochemical properties. Data visualization is a popular way of presenting complex data in a simpler form. We have applied powerful principled visualization methods, such as generative topographic mapping (GTM) and hierarchical GTM (HGTM), to help the domain experts (screening scientists, chemists, biologists, etc.) understand and draw meaningful decisions. We also benchmark these principled methods against relatively better known visualization approaches, principal component analysis (PCA), Sammon's mapping, and self-organizing maps (SOMs), to demonstrate their enhanced power to help the user visualize the large multidimensional data sets one has to deal with during the early stages of the drug discovery process. The results reported clearly show that the GTM and HGTM algorithms allow the user to cluster active compounds for different targets and understand them better than the benchmarks. An interactive software tool supporting these visualization algorithms was provided to the domain experts. The tool facilitates the domain experts by exploration of the projection obtained from the visualization algorithms providing facilities such as parallel coordinate plots, magnification factors, directional curvatures, and integration with industry standard software. © 2006 American Chemical Society.
