An acoustic-optics programmable dispersive filter (AOPDF) was first employed to actively control the linearly polarized femtosecond pump pulse frequency chirp for supercontinuum (SC) generation in a high birefringence photonic crystal fiber (PCF). By accurately controlling the second order phase distortion and polarization direction of incident pulses, the output SC spectrum can be tuned to various spectral energy distributions and bandwidths. The pump pulse energy and bandwidth are preserved in our experiment. It is found that SC with broader bandwidth can be generated with positive chirped pump pulses except when the chirp value is larger than the optimal value, and the same optimal value exists for the pump pulses polarized along the two principal axes. With optimal positive chirp, more than 78% of the pump energy can be transferred to below 750 nm. Otherwise, negative chirp will weaken the blue-shift broadening and the SC bandwidth. A Hohlraum-like configuration is proposed for realizing a simple compact source for neutrons. A laser pulse enters a tiny thin-shelled hollow-sphere target through a small opening and is self-consistently trapped in the cavity. The electrons in the inner shell-wall region are expelled by the light pressure. The resulting space-charge field compresses the local ions into a thin layer that becomes strongly heated. An inward expansion of ions into the shell cavity then occurs, resulting in the formation at the cavity center of a hot spot of ions at high density and temperature, similar to that in inertial electrostatic confinement.

A pump and probe system is developed, where the probe pulse duration tau is less than 60 fs while the pump pulse is stretched up to 150-670 fs. The time-resolved excitation processes and damage mechanisms in the omnidirectional reflectors SiO2/TiO2 and ZnS/MgF2 are studied. It is found that as the pump pulse energy is higher than the threshold value, the reflectivity of the probe pulse decreases rapidly during the former half, rather than around the peak of the pump pulse. A coupled dynamic model based on the avalanche ionization (AI) theory is used to study the excitation processes in the sample and its inverse influences on the pump pulse. The results indicate that as pulse duration is longer than 150 fs, photoionization (PI) and AI both play important roles in the generation of conduction band electrons (CBEs); the CBE density generated via AI is higher than that via PI by a factor of 10(2)-10(4). The theory explains well the experimental results about the ultrafast excitation processes and the threshold fluences. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Various studies designed to elucidate the electronic structure of the arsenic donor ligand, o-phenylenebisdimethylarsine (diarsine), have been carried out. The electronic spectrum of diarsine has been measured at 300 and 77˚K. Electronic spectra of the molecular complexes of various substituted organoarsines and phosphines with tetracyanoethylene have been measured and used to estimate the relative ionization potentials of these molecules.
Uv photolysis of arsines in frozen solution (96˚K) has yielded thermally labile, paramagnetic products. These include the molecular cations of the photolyzed compounds. The species (diars)+ exhibits hyper-fine splitting due to two equivalent 75As(I=3/2) nuclei. Resonances due to secondary products are reported and assignments discussed.
Evidence is presented for the involvement of d-orbitals in the bonding of arsines. In (diars)+ there is mixing of arsenic “lone-pair” orbitals with benzene ring π-orbitals.

Detailed electronic spectral measurements at 300 and 77˚K have been carried out on five-coordinate complexes of low-spin nickel(II), including complexes of both trigonal bipyramidal (TBP) and square pyramidal (SPY) geometry. TBP complexes are of the form NiLX+ (X=halide or cyanide,
L = Qƭ(CH2)3As(CH3)2]3 or
P [hexagon - Q'CH3] , Q = P, As,
Q’=S, Se).
The electronic spectra of these compounds exhibit a novel feature at low temperature. The first ligand field band, which is asymmetric in the room temperature solution spectrum, is considerably more symmetrical at 77˚K. This effect is interpreted in terms of changes in the structure of the complex.
The SPY complexes are of the form Ni(diars)2Xz (X=CL, Br, CNS, CN, thiourea, NO2, As). On the basis of the spectral results, the d-level ordering is concluded to be xy ˂ xz, yz ˂ z2 ˂˂ x2 - y2. Central to this interpretation is identification of the symmetry-allowed 1A1 → 1E (xz, yz → x2 - y2) transition. This assignment was facilitated by the low temperature measurements.
An assignment of the charge-transfer spectra of the five-coordinate complexes is reported, and electronic spectral criteria for distinguishing the two limiting geometries are discussed.

The annealing effects of sapphire substrates on the quality of epitaxial ZnO films grown by dc reactive magnetron sputtering were studied. The atomic steps formed on (0001) sapphire (alpha-Al2O3) substrates surface by annealing at high temperature were analyzed by atomic force microscopy. Their influence on the growth of ZnO films was examined by X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence measurements. Experimental results indicate that the film quality is strongly affected by annealing treatment of the sapphire substrate surface. The optimum annealing temperature of sapphire substrates for ZnO grown by magnetron sputtering is 1400 degrees C for 1 h in air.

We report on the room-temperature continuous-wave (CW) operation of a Ho:YAlO3 laser that is resonantly end pumped at 1.94 mu m by a diode-pumped thulium-doped laser in the same host. Through the use of a 1 at % Ho3+-doped 20-mm-long YAlO3 crystal (b cut), the Ho:YAlO3 laser generated 1 W of linearly polarized (E//c) output at 2118 nm and 0.55 W of E//a output at 2128.5 nm for an incident pump power of 5 W, with an output coupler transmission of 14 and 3%, respectively. An optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 20% and a slope efficiency of 33% were achieved at 2118 nm corresponding to an incident pump power.

We reported on a diode end-pumped AO Q-switched Tm:YAP laser at 1937 nm. The average output power was 3.9 W, with a slope efficiency of 29.4% and optical-optical conversion efficiency of 21.6% at a 5-kHz repetition rate. The temperature dependency of the output power and the pulse width at different repetition rates were investigated in details.
