Condições de estresse hídrico e salino durante a fase de germinação afetam a emergência das plântulas no campo e, consequentemente, o estande das plantas e o desenvolvimento vegetativo das culturas. Através de dois experimentos objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos dos estresses hídrico e salino, na germinação e vigor de sementes de dois genótipos de sorgo forrageiro [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench]. A semeadura foi realizada no interior de caixas "Gerbox", sobre duas folhas de papel "germitest" umedecidas com água destilada (controle) ou com soluções de polietileno glicol 6000, de modo a fornecer os potenciais hídricos de -0,2, -0,4 e -0,8 MPa, ou com NaCl a 75, 150 e 300 mM, respectivamente. A germinação e o vigor das sementes foram avaliados através da primeira contagem (PCG), teste padrão (TG), índice de velocidade (IVG) e tempo médio de germinação (TMG). Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial (2x4), totalizando oito tratamentos, com quatro repetições de 50 sementes cada, em ambos os ensaios. O genótipo CSF 18 teve a germinação afetada somente no maior nível de salinidade (300 mM), observando-se aumento no TMG e redução nas variáveis PCG, IVG e TG. O genótipo CSF 20 apresentou comportamento semelhante, exceto para as variáveis IVG e TMG, as quais foram afetadas pelo NaCl a partir da concentração de 150 mM. Os genótipos mostram respostas diferenciadas quanto às condições de déficit hídrico e salinidade, sendo que as sementes de sorgo do genótipo CSF 18 apresentam germinação e vigor superiores em relação às do genótipo CSF 20.

O estresse hídrico e o grau de umidade das sementes podem afetar as primeiras fases da germinação e prejudicar o pleno estabelecimento das culturas. Dessa forma, objetivou-se avaliar o efeito de potenciais hídricos do substrato e do teor de água das sementes na germinação do crambe e verificar a ocorrência de possíveis danos por embebição nas sementes. Os tratamentos foram constituídos de sementes de crambe, cultivar FMS Brilhante, com teores de água de 7,0, 12,8, 18,4 e 21,9% e submetidos aos seguintes potenciais hídricos no substrato, simulados com soluções aquosas de polietilenoglicol 6000 (PEG 6000): 0,0 (controle); -0,1; -0,2 e -0,4 MPa. As sementes foram semeadas sobre duas folhas de papel para germinação e posicionadas dentro de caixas de plástico do tipo "gerbox" e mantidas aos 25 ºC. A qualidade fisiológica das sementes foi avaliada por meio da primeira contagem, porcentagem de germinação, comprimento de hipocótilo e de raiz primária, massa fresca e seca das plântulas. Utilizou-se o delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições de 50 sementes para cada tratamento, sendo os dados submetidos à análise de regressão. À medida que a disponibilidade hídrica do substrato diminuiu, houve redução na germinabilidade das sementes em todos os teores de água testados, especialmente em sementes com 7,0 e 12,8% de teor de água, que apresentaram menos de 48% de plântulas normais sob -0,4 MPa. Apesar da redução das características avaliadas com a deficiência hídrica, a extensão dos danos em sementes de crambe é determinada pelo teor de água das sementes e pela severidade do estresse hídrico.

A presente pesquisa teve por objetivo avaliar o efeito de agentes indutores de estresse hídrico e salino na germinação, crescimento e resposta antioxidante de plântulas de girassol. Sementes da cv. M735 foram germinadas em papel umedecido com soluções osmóticas nos potenciais de 0,0; -0,2; -0,4 e -0,8 MPa, induzidos com PEG 6000 e NaCl. O teste de germinação foi conduzido com quatro subamostras de 100 sementes e quatro repetições por tratamento, em câmara de germinação sob temperatura média de 25 ºC, na ausência de luz. Foram avaliados a porcentagem final e índice de velocidade de germinação das sementes, além do crescimento inicial e atividade de enzimas antioxidantes das plântulas. O estresse hídrico induzido por PEG 6000 aumentou a porcentagem de sementes germinadas no potencial de -0,2 MPa, por outro lado, para o NaCl no potencial de -0,8 MPa, houve significativa redução. Para este mesmo potencial, também houve redução no índice de velocidade de germinação das sementes para ambos os agentes condicionantes. Para os parâmetros de crescimento, o comprimento da parte aérea reduziu linearmente com o aumento das concentrações de PEG 6000 e NaCl. Já para a massa seca de folhas e raízes e o comprimento das raízes, este efeito foi mais expressivo somente no potencial de -0,8 MPa. As enzimas SOD, APX e CAT apresentaram tendência de menor atividade nas plântulas oriundas de sementes acondicionadas em PEG 6000. Na presença do NaCl, a atividade da SOD nas folhas aumentou significativamente nos três potenciais testados em relação a testemunha. Para a APX e CAT este aumento foi observado nos potenciais de -0,2 e -0,4 MPa. Nas raízes não foi observada diferença significativa. A análise conjunta dos parâmetros avaliados indica que a cv de girassol M735, nas condições testadas, apresenta tolerância ao estresse hídrico e salino até o potencial de -0,4 MPa.

A review of the literature reveals that there are a number of children in the educational system who are characterized by Attention Deficit Disorder. Further review of the literature reveals that there are information processing programs which have had some success in increasing the learning of these children. Currently, an information processing program which is based on schema theory is being implemented in Lincoln County. Since schema theory based programs build structural, conditional, factual, and procedural schemata which assist the learner in attending to salient factors, learning should be increased. Thirty-four children were selected from a random sampling of Grade Seven classes in Lincoln County. Seventeen of these children were identified by the researcher and classroom teacher as being characterized by Attention Deficit Disorder. From the remaining population, 17 children who were not characterized by Attention Deficit Disorder were randomly selected. The data collected were compared using independent t-tests, paired t-tests, and correlation analysis. Significant differences were found in all cases. The Non-Attention Deficit Disorder children scored significantly higher on all the tests but the Attention Defici t Disorder children had a significantly higher ratio of gain between the pretests and posttests.

Physical Activity of Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder in the Presence of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Does Gender Matter? Brock University, St. Catharines, Ontario, CANADA. Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) have difficulties in motor coordination. Attention-deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) is considered the condition most co-morbid with DCD at approximately 50%. Children with DCD are generally less physically active (PA) than their peers, while children with ADHD are often considered more physically active. It is not known if the physical activity patterns of children with DCD-ADHD resemble those of children with primarily DCD or that of their healthy peers. The primary objective of this research was to contrast physical activity patterns between children with DCD, DCD-ADHD, and healthy controls. Since boys are generally reported as more physically active than girls, a secondary objective was to determine if gender moderated the association between groups and physical activity. A sample of males (n=66) and females (n=44) were recruited from the Physical Health Activity Study Team (PHAST) longitudinal study. The Movement Assessment Battery for Children (2nd Ed.) was used to identify probable cases of DCD, and Connor's Revised Parent Rating Scale- Short Version to identify ADHD. Subjects (mean age=12.8±.4 yrs) were allocated to three groups; DCD (n=32), DCD-ADHD (n=30) and control (n=48). Physical activity was monitored for seven days with the Actical® accelerometer (activity count, step count and energy expenditure). Children completed the Participation Questionnaire (PQ) during the in-school session of data collection for the PHAST study. Height, weight and body mass index (BMI) were also determined. Analysis of variance showed significant group differences for activity count (F(2,56)=5.36, p=.007) and PQ (F(2,44 )=6. 71, p=.003) in males, while a significant group difference for step count (F(2,37)=3.55, p=.04) was found in females. Post hoc comparison tests (Tukey) identified significantly lower PQ and activity count between males with OCD and controls (p=.004) and males with DCD-ADHD and controls (p=.003). Conversely, females with DCD-ADHD had significantly more step counts than their controls (p=.01). Analysis of covariance demonstrated a gender by DCD groups negative interaction for males (activity count) (F(2,92):;:3.11, p=.049) and a positive interaction for females (step count) (F(1,92)=4.92, p=.009). Hyperactivity in females with DCD-ADHD appears to contribute to more physical activity, whereas DCD may contribute to decreased activity in males with DCD and DCDADHD. Further research is needed to examine gender differences in physical activity within the context of DCD and ADHD.

Through meditation, people become aware of what happens in the body and mind, accepting the present experiences as they are and getting a better understanding of the true nature of things. Meditation practices and its inclusion as an intervention technique, have generated great interest in identifying the brain mechanisms through which these practices operate. Different studies suggest that the practice of meditation is associated with the use of different neural networks as well as changes in brain structure and function, represented in higher concentration of gray matter structures at the hippocampus, the right anterior insula, orbital frontal cortex (OFC) and greater involvement of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). These and other unrelated studies, shows the multiple implications of the regular practice of mindfulness in the structures and functions of the brain and its relation to certain observable and subjective states in people who practice it. Such evidence enabling the inclusion of mindfulness in psychological therapy where multiple applications have been developed to prove its effectiveness in treating affective and emotional problems, crisis management, social skills, verbal creativity, addiction and craving management, family and caregivers stress of dementia patients and others. However, neuropsychological rehabilitation has no formal proposals for intervention from these findings. The aim of this paper is to propose use of Mindfulness in neuropsychological rehabilitation process, taking the positions and theory of A.R. Luria.

Hemineglect (HN) is a widely studied syndrome after unilateral lesions due to stroke. However, although there are some studies with HN rehabilitation of posttraumatic brain injury (TBI), there seems to be no published data about the prevalence of HN in TBI through cancellation tasks. Thus, the objective of this study was to characterize the occurrence of this syndrome and of attentional deficits in patients with TBI by means of the Bells Test and of a line cancellation task. The sample was comprised of 21 patients with TBI and 21 healthy controls matched by education, age and frequency of written language habits. There was a poorer performance of patients with TBI with a greater number of omissions on the left side and lower speed processing. In addition, suggestive signs of HN were found in 38 % of the sample of TBI patients. More research is needed to characterize clinical syndromes regarding the occurrence of HN after a TBI through the traditionally known cancellation paradigm.

El principal problema del agua radica en que la demanda sigue creciendo y la oferta, tanto en calidad como en disponibilidad, no esta en capacidad de atender las exigencias de las diferentes necesidades humanas y del ambiente.
