A fast and robust analytical method for amperometric determination of hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) based on batch injection analysis (BIA) on an array of gold microelectrodes modified with platinum is proposed. The gold microelectrode array (n = 14) was obtained from electronic chips developed for surface mounted device technology (SMD), whose size offers advantages to adapt them in batch cells. The effect of the dispensing rate, volume injected, distance between the platinum microelectrodes and the pipette tip, as well as the volume of solution in the cell on the analytical response were evaluated. The method allows the H(2)O(2) amperometric determination in the concentration range from 0.8 mu mol L(-1) to 100 mu mol L(-1). The analytical frequency can attain 300 determinations per hour and the detection limit was estimated in 0.34 mu mol L(-1) (3 sigma). The anodic current peaks obtained after a series of 23 successive injections of 50 mu L of 25 mu mol L(-1) H(2)O(2) showed an RSD < 0.9%. To ensure the good selectivity to detect H(2)O(2), its determination was performed in a differential mode, with selective destruction of the H(2)O(2) with catalase in 10 mmol L(-1) phosphate buffer solution. Practical application of the analytical procedure involved H(2)O(2) determination in rainwater of Sao Paulo City. A comparison of the results obtained by the proposed ampermetric method with another one which combines flow injection analysis (FIA) with spectrophotometric detection showed good agreement. Semiconducting films of (n-type) ZnSe and (p-type) nitrogen-doped ZnSe were electrodeposited by a linear-sweep voltammetric technique on to a substrate of fluorine-tin oxide (FM) glass ceramics. The films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis and grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction. The results indicated that the material was deposited uniformly over the substrate, forming clusters when the Zn content of the bath was 0.1 mol L(-1) and a film when it was 0.2 or 0.3 mol L(-1). The effectiveness of doping the films with nitrogen by adding ammonium sulfate to the deposition solution was assessed by measuring the film-electrolyte interface capacitance (C) at various applied potentials (E(ap)) and plotting Mott-Schottky curves (C(-2) vs E(ap)), whose slope sign was used to identify p-type ZnSe. This paper reports on a sensor array able to distinguish tastes and used to classify red wines. The array comprises sensing units made from Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of conducting polymers and lipids and layer-by-layer (LBL) films from chitosan deposited onto gold interdigitated electrodes. Using impedance spectroscopy as the principle of detection, we show that distinct clusters can be identified in principal component analysis (PCA) plots for six types of red wine. Distinction can be made with regard to vintage, vineyard and brands of the red wine. Furthermore, if the data are treated with artificial neural networks (ANNs), this artificial tongue can identify wine samples stored under different conditions. This is illustrated by considering 900 wine samples, obtained with 30 measurements for each of the five bottles of the six wines, which could be recognised with 100% accuracy using the algorithms Standard Backpropagation and Backpropagation momentum in the ANNs. Chemical sensors made from nanostructured films of poly(o-ethoxyaniline) POEA and poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) PSS are produced and used to detect and distinguish 4 chemicals in solution at 20 mM, including sucrose, NaCl, HCl, and caffeine. These substances are used in order to mimic the 4 basic tastes recognized by humans, namely sweet, salty, sour, and bitter, respectively. The sensors are produced by the deposition of POEA/PSS films at the top of interdigitated microelectrodes via the layer-by-layer technique, using POEA solutions containing different dopant acids. Besides the different characteristics of the POEA/PSS films investigated by UV-Vis and Raman spectroscopies, and by atomic force microscopy.. it is observed that their electrical response to the different chemicals in liquid media is very fast, in the order of seconds, systematical, reproducible, and extremely dependent on the type of acid used for film fabrication. The responses of the as-prepared sensors are reproducible and repetitive after many cycles of operation. Furthermore, the use of an "electronic tongue" composed by an array of these sensors and principal component analysis as pattern recognition tool allows one to reasonably distinguish test solutions according to their chemical composition. Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films from a ruthenium complex, mer-[RuCl3(dppb)(py)] (dppb = PPh2(CH2)(4)PPh2; py = pyridine) (Rupy), and from mixtures with varied amounts of polyaniline (PANi) were fabricated. Molecular-level interactions between the two components are investigated by surface potential, dc conductivity and Raman spectroscopy measurements, particularly for the mixed film with 10% of Rupy. For the latter, the better miscibility led to an interaction with Rupy inducing a decrease in the conducting state of PANi, as observed in the Raman spectra and conductivity measurement. The interaction causes the final film properties to depend on the concentration of Rupy, and this was exploited to produce a sensor array made up of sensing units consisting of 11-layer LB films from pure PANi, pure Rupy and mixtures with 10 and 30% of Rupy. It is shown that the combination of only four non-specific sensing units allows one to distinguish the basic tastes detected by biological systems, viz. saltiness, sweetness, sourness and bitterness, at the muM level. Zinc oxide (ZnO) is an electroluminescent (EL) material that can emit light in different regions of electromagnetic spectrum when electrically excited. Since ZnO is chemically stable, inexpensive and environmentally friendly material, its EL property can be useful to construct solid-state lamps for illumination or as UV emitter. We present here two wet chemical methods to prepare ZnO thin-films: the Pechini method and the sol-gel method, with both methods resulting in crystalline and transparent films with transmittance > 85% at 550 nm. These films were used to make thin-film electroluminescent devices (TFELD) using two different insulator layers: lithium fluoride (LiF) or silica (SiO2). All the devices exhibit at least two wide emission bands in the visible range centered at 420 nm and at 380 nm attributed to the electronic defects in the ZnO optical band gap. Besides these two bands, the device using SiO2 and ZnO film obtained via sol-gel exhibits an additional band in the UV range centered at 350 nm which can be attributed to excitonic emission. These emission bands of ZnO can transfer their energy when a proper dopant is present. For the devices produced the voltage-current characteristics were measured in a specific range of applied voltage. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The alternating conductivity, sigma*(f) = sigma'(f) + i sigma ''(f), of in situ polymerized polyaniline thin films doped with hydrochloric acid, deposited on top of an interdigitated gold line array previously deposited on glass substrates, were measured in the frequency (f) range between 0.1 Hz to 10 MHz and in the temperature range from 100 to 430 K. The results for sigma'(f) are typical of a disordered solid material: for frequencies lower than a certain hopping frequency gamma(hop), log[sigma'(f)] is frequency-independent rising almost linearly for in logf > gamma(hop). A master curve was thus obtained by plotting the real component of the conductivity using normalized scales sigma'(f)/sigma(dc) and f/gamma(hop) which is indicative of a single process operating in the whole frequency range. An expression encompassing the conduction through a disordered structure taken from previous random free energy barrier model for hopping carriers, as well a dielectric function to represent the capacitive behavior of the PAni was employed to fit the experimental results. The dielectric constant and activation energy for hopping carriers were obtained as function of the polymer doping level. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Strong interest in developing technology for visual information. stimulates research for thin film electroluminescent devices. Here, for the first time, we report that thulium- and terbium-doped zinc-oxide films are suitable for electroluminescence applications. Two different devices were assembled as lTO/LiF/ZnO:RE/LiF/Al or ITO/SiO2/ZnO:RE/SiO2/Al, where ZnO:RE is a film of zinc oxide containing 10 at% of Tb3+ or Tm3+. Electroluminescence spectra show that besides a broad emission band with maximum around 650 nm assigned to ZnO, also emission lines from Tb3+ at 484 nm (D-5(4) -> F-7(6)), 543 nm (D-5(4) -> F-7(6)), and 589 nm (D-5(4) -> F-7(4)), or from Tm3+ at 478 nm ((1)G(4) -> H-3(6)), and 511 mn (D-1(2) -> H-3(5)) were detected. Intensity of emission as function of applied voltage and current-voltage characteristic are shown and discussed. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
