The adsorption and electroadsorption of arsenic from a natural water has been studied in a filter-press electrochemical cell using a commercial granular activated carbon as adsorbent and Pt/Ti and graphite as electrodes. A significant reduction of the arsenic concentration is achieved when current is imposed between the electrodes, especially when the activated carbon was located in the vicinity of the anode. This enhancement can be explained in terms of the presence of electrostatic interactions between the polarized carbon surface and the arsenic ions, and changes in the distribution of most stable species of arsenic in solution due to As(III) to As(V) oxidation. In summary, electrochemical adsorption on a filter-press cell can be used for enhancement the arsenic remediation with activated carbon in the treatment of a real groundwater.

A series of CeO2–Nb2O5 mixed oxides with different Nb content, as well as the pure oxides, have been synthesized by co-precipitation with excess urea. These materials have been used as supports for platinum catalysts, with [Pt(NH3)4](NO3)2 as precursor. Both supports and catalysts have been characterized by several techniques: N2 physisorption at 77 K, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV–vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, temperature-programmed reduction and temperature-programmed desorption (CO and H2), and their catalytic behaviour has been determined in the PROX reaction, both with an ideal gas mixture (CO, O2 and H2) and in simulated reformate gas containing CO2 and H2O. Raman spectroscopy analysis has shown the likely substitution of some Ce4+ cations by Nb5+ to some extent in supports with low niobium contents. Moreover, the presence of Nb in the supports hinders their ability to adsorb CO and to oxidize it to CO2. However, an improvement of the catalytic activity for CO oxidation is obtained by adding Nb to the support, although the Pt/Nb2O5 catalyst shows very low activity. The best results are found with the Pt/0.7CeO2–0.3Nb2O5 catalyst, which shows a high CO conversion (85%) and a high yield (around 0.6) after a reduction treatment at 523 K. The effect of the presence of CO2 and H2O in the feed has also been determined.

Ethanol adsorption on different activated carbons (mostly spherical ones) was investigated covering the relative pressure range from 0.001 to 1. Oxygen surface contents of the ACs were modified by oxidation (in HNO3 solution or air) and/or by thermal treatment in N2. To differentiate the concomitant effects of porosity and oxygen surface chemistry on ethanol adsorption, different sets of samples were used to analyze different relative pressure ranges (below 1000 ppmv concentration and close to unity). To see the effect of oxygen surface chemistry, selected samples having similar porosity but different oxygen contents were studied in the low relative pressure range. At low ethanol concentration (225 ppmv) adsorption is favored in oxidized samples, remarking the effect of the oxidizing treatment used (HNO3 is more effective than air) and the type of oxygen functionalities created (carboxyl and anhydride groups are more effective than phenolic, carbonyl and derivatives). To analyze the high relative pressure range, spherical and additional ACs were used. As the relative pressure of ethanol increases, the effect of oxygen-containing surface groups decreases and microporosity becomes the most important variable affecting the adsorption of ethanol.

This work presents a comparative study between the catalytic performance of the 2% CuO/ceria-zirconia powder catalyst and the same catalyst supported on silicon carbide DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) towards NO oxidation reaction and soot combustion reaction. The ceria-zirconia catalyst was prepared by the co-precipitation method and 2 wt% copper was incorporated by the incipient wetness impregnation method. The catalyst was incorporated onto the ceramic support using a simple and organic solvent-free procedure by a simply dipping the DPF into an aqueous solution of the catalyst. The powder catalyst has been characterized using N2 adsorption at −196 °C, XRD and Raman Spectroscopy; whereas the catalytic coating morphology has been evaluated by SEM and the mechanical stability by an adherence test. Both catalyst configurations were tested for NO oxidation to NO2 and for soot combustion under NOx/O2. The results revealed that incorporation of the very active copper/ceria-zirconia catalyst onto SiC-DPF has been successfully achieved by a simple coating procedure. Furthermore, the catalytic coating has shown suitable mechanical, chemical and thermal stability. A satisfactory catalytic performance of the catalytic-coated filter was reached towards the NO oxidation reaction. Moreover, it was proved that the catalytic coating is stable and the corresponding coated DPF can be reused for several cycles of NO oxidation without a significant decrease in its activity. Finally, it was verified that the loose-contact mode is a good choice to simulate the catalytic performance of this active phase in a real diesel particulate filter.

A key target to reduce current hydrocarbon emissions from vehicular exhaust is to improve their abatement under cold-start conditions. Herein, we demonstrate the potential of factorial analysis to design a highly efficient catalytic trap. The impact of the synthesis conditions on the preparation of copper-loaded ZSM-5 is clearly revealed by XRD, N2 sorption, FTIR, NH3-TPD, SEM and TEM. A high concentration of copper nitrate precursor in the synthesis improves the removal of hydrocarbons, providing both strong adsorption sites for hydrocarbon retention at low temperature and copper oxide nanoparticles for full hydrocarbon catalytic combustion at high temperature. The use of copper acetate precursor leads to a more homogeneous dispersion of copper oxide nanoparticles also providing enough catalytic sites for the total oxidation of hydrocarbons released from the adsorption sites, although lower copper loadings are achieved. Thus, synthesis conditions leading to high copper loadings jointly with highly dispersed copper oxide nanoparticles would result in an exceptional catalytic trap able to reach superior hydrocarbon abatement under highly demanding operational conditions.

The use of hydrogen as an energy vector leads to the development of materials with high hydrogen adsorption capacity. In this work, a new layered stannosilicate, UZAR-S3, is synthesized and delaminated, producing UZAR-S4. UZAR-S3, with the empirical formula Na4SnSi5O14·3.5H2O and lamellar morphology, is a layered stannosilicate built from SnO6 and SiO4 polyhedra. The delamination process used here comprises three stages: protonation with acetic acid, swelling with nonylamine and the delamination itself with an HCl/H2O/ethanol solution. UZAR-S4 is composed of sheets a few nanometers thick with a high aspect ratio and a surface area of 236 m2/g, twenty times higher than that of UZAR-S3. At −196 °C for UZAR-S4, H2 adsorption reached remarkable values of 3.7 and 4.2 wt% for 10 and 40 bar, respectively, the latter value giving a high volumetric H2 storage capacity of 26.2 g of H2/L.

Three activated carbons with different surface chemical groups were used to analyse the influence of these groups on their adsorption capacities towards aromatic-type molecules whose adsorption is based on π-π interactions with surface arene centres. The three activated carbons studied were a low-functionalized carbon (Merck), an oxygen-rich carbon obtained by HNO3 oxidation of Merck, and a nitrogen-rich carbon also prepared from Merck by mild HNO3 oxidation followed by treatment with a dicyanodiamide/dimethyl formamide mixture at 300 °C. The nature of the surface chemical groups of the three activated carbons was investigated by both physical and chemical techniques (TPD, XPS, Boehm analysis and pH potentiometric titration). A systematic study of the adsorptions of a series of analogous aromatic adsorbates on the three activated carbons was carried out to study the adsorption mechanisms. In all cases the adsorption mechanism is based on π-π interactions between the aromatic moiety of the adsorbates and the arene centres of the graphite sheets. The differences in the normalized adsorption capacities of the adsorbents for a set of adsorbates indicate that the π-donor or π-withdrawing character of the functional groups have a clear influence on the basicity of the arene centres.

The immobilization of the chiral complex RhDuphos, by electrostatic or π–π (adsorption) interactions, on carbon nanotubes and carbon xerogels is investigated. To promote such interactions, the supports were either oxidized or heat treated to create carboxylic type surface groups or an apolar surface, respectively. The catalysts were tested in the hydrogenation of methyl 2-acetamidoacrylate. The prepared hybrid catalysts are less active than the homogeneous RhDuphos, but most of them show a high enantioselectivity and the one prepared with the oxidized carbon xerogel is also reusable, being able to give a high substrate conversion, keeping as well a high enantioselectivity. The anchorage by electrostatic interactions is more interesting than the anchorage by π–π interactions, as the π–π adsorption method produces a modification of the metal complex structure leading to an active hybrid catalyst but without enantioselectivity. The creation of carboxylic groups on the support surface has led to some hindering of the complex leaching.

The synthesis of nitrogenated carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) with up to 6.1 wt% N, via the use of pyridine as the nitrogen containing carbon precursor, can provide a facile route to significantly enhance the low intrinsic specific capacitance of carbon nanotubes. The nitrogen functionalities determine this, at least, five-fold increase of the specific capacitance.

A synthetic procedure to prepare novel materials (surface-mediated fillings) based on robust hierarchical monoliths is reported. The methodology includes the deposition of a (micro- or mesoporous) silica thin film on the support followed by growth of a porous monolithic SiO2 structure. It has been demonstrated that this synthesis is viable for supports of different chemical nature with different inner diameters without shrinkage of the silica filling. The formation mechanism of the surface-mediated fillings is based on a solution/precipitation process and the anchoring of the silica filling to the deposited thin film. The interaction between the two SiO2 structures (monolith and thin film) depends on the porosity of the thin film and yields composite materials with different mechanical stability. By this procedure, capillary microreactors have been prepared and have been proved to be highly active and selective in the total and preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide (TOxCO and PrOxCO).

Alternative energy technologies are greatly hindered by significant limitations in materials science. From low activity to poor stability, and from mineral scarcity to high cost, the current materials are not able to cope with the significant challenges of clean energy technologies. However, recent advances in the preparation of nanomaterials, porous solids, and nanostructured solids are providing hope in the race for a better, cleaner energy production. The present contribution critically reviews the development and role of mesoporosity in a wide range of technologies, as this provides for critical improvements in accessibility, the dispersion of the active phase and a higher surface area. Relevant examples of the development of mesoporosity by a wide range of techniques are provided, including the preparation of hierarchical structures with pore systems in different scale ranges. Mesoporosity plays a significant role in catalysis, especially in the most challenging processes where bulky molecules, like those obtained from biomass or highly unreactive species, such as CO2 should be transformed into most valuable products. Furthermore, mesoporous materials also play a significant role as electrodes in fuel and solar cells and in thermoelectric devices, technologies which are benefiting from improved accessibility and a better dispersion of materials with controlled porosity.

In situ Raman spectroscopy was exploited to analyze the interaction between carbon and hydrogen during electrochemical hydrogen storage at cathodic conditions. Two different activated carbons were used and characterized by different electrochemical techniques in two electrolytes (6 M KOH and 0.5 M Na2SO4). The in situ Raman spectra collected showed that, in addition to the D and G bands associated to the graphitic carbons, two bands appear simultaneously at about 1110 and 1500 cm−1 under cathodic conditions, and then they disappear when the potential increases to more positive values. This indicates that carbon–hydrogen bonds are formed reversibly in both electrolytes during cathodic conditions. Comparing the two activated carbons, it was confirmed that, in both electrolytes, the hydrogenation of carbon atoms is produced more easily for the sample with lower amount of surface oxygen groups. In KOH medium, for the two samples, the formation of carbon–hydrogen bonds proceeds at more positive potential with respect to the thermodynamic potential value for hydrogen evolution. Furthermore, changes in the shape of the D band (due to an intensity increase of the D1 band) during the formation of carbon–hydrogen bonds suggest that hydrogenation of the carbon atoms increases the number of edge planes.

A biomass derived carbon, a commercial microporous carbon and a xerogel mesoporous carbon catalysts were used in the study of α-pinene methoxilation reaction and the influence of textural and physical–chemical properties of the carbons was evaluated. Biomass carbon presented the higher activity, whereas the commercial one is the less active in the conditions studied. The main product of the reaction was α-terpinyl methyl ether and good values of selectivity were obtained over all the catalysts. A kinetic model was developed assuming that the α-pinene is consumed according to the parallel reaction network. The kinetic model presents high quality fittings to the experimental concentration profiles. These results show that it is possible to activate a waste residue using H3PO4 and convert it to high added value product such as acid catalyst.
