Thiol-functionalised silica films were deposited on various electrode surfaces (gold, platinum, glassy carbon) by spin-coating sol-gel mixtures in the presence of a surfactant template. Film formation occurred by evaporation induced self-assembly (EISA) involving the hydrolysis and (co)condensation of silane and organosilane precursors on the electrode surface. The characterization of such material was performed by IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetry (TG), elemental analysis (EA), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and cyclic voltammetry (CV).

Colloidal particles have been used to template the electrosynthesis of several materials, such as semiconductors, metals and alloys. The method allows good control over the thickness of the resulting material by choosing the appropriate charge applied to the system, and it is able to produce high density deposited materials without shrinkage. These materials are a true model of the template structure and, due to the high surface areas obtained, are very promising for use in electrochemical applications. In the present work, the assembly of monodisperse polystyrene templates was conduced over gold, platinum and glassy carbon substrates in order to show the electrodeposition of an oxide, a conducting polymer and a hybrid inorganic-organic material with applications in the supercapacitor and sensor fields. The performances of the resulting nanostructured films have been compared with the analogue bulk material and the results achieved are depicted in this paper.

A systematic study of magnetoresistance and dc magnetization was conducted in polycrystalline (Ru(1-x)Ir(x))Sr(2)GdCu(2)O(8) [(Ru,Ir)-1212] compounds, for 0 <= x <= 0.15. We found that a deviation from linearity in the normal-state electrical resistivity (rho) curves for temperatures below the magnetic transition temperature T(M) < 130 K can be properly described by a logarithmic term. The prefactor C(x, H) of this anomalous ln T contribution to rho(T) increases linearly with the Ir concentration, and diminishes rapidly with increasing applied magnetic field up to H approximate to 4 T, merging with the C(0,H) curve at higher magnetic fields. Correlation with magnetic susceptibility measurements supports a scenario of local perturbations in the orientation of Ru moments induced in the neighborhood of the Ir ions, therefore acting as scattering centers. The linear dependence of the prefactor C(x,H=0) and the superconducting transition temperature T(SC) on x points to a common source for the resistivity anomaly and the reduction in T(SC), suggesting that the CuO(2) and RuO(2) layers are not decoupled.

Light absorption of alpha-glycine crystals grown by slow evaporation at room temperature was measured, indicating a 5.11 +/- 0.02 eV energy band gap. Structural, electronic, and optical absorption properties of alpha-glycine crystals were obtained by first-principles quantum mechanical calculations using density functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation in order to understand this result. To take into account the contribution of core electrons, ultrasoft and norm-conserving pseudopotentials, as well as an all electron approach were considered to compute the electronic density of states and band structure of alpha-glycine crystals. They exhibit three indirect energy band gaps and one direct Gamma-Gamma energy gap around 4.95 eV. The optical absorption related to transitions between the top of the valence band and the bottom of the conduction band involves O 2p valence states and C, O 2p conduction states, with the carboxyl group contributing significantly to the origin of the energy band gap. The calculated optical absorption is highly dependent on the polarization of the incident radiation due to the spatial arrangement of the dipolar glycine molecules; in the case of a polycrystalline sample, the first-principles calculated optical absorption is in good agreement with the measurement when a rigid energy shift is applied.

High-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements were performed on single crystalline and powder samples of BiMn(2)O(5). A linear temperature dependence of the unit cell volume was found between T(N)=38 and 100 K, suggesting that a low-energy lattice excitation may be responsible for the lattice expansion in this temperature range. Between T(*)similar to 65 K and T(N), all lattice parameters showed incipient magnetoelastic effects, due to short-range spin correlations. An anisotropic strain along the a direction was also observed below T(*). Below T(N), a relatively large contraction of the a parameter following the square of the average sublattice magnetization of Mn was found, indicating that a second-order spin Hamiltonian accounts for the magnetic interactions along this direction. On the other hand, the more complex behaviors found for b and c suggest additional magnetic transitions below T(N) and perhaps higher-order terms in the spin Hamiltonian. Polycrystalline samples grown by distinct routes and with nearly homogeneous crystal structure above T(N) presented structural phase coexistence below T(N), indicating a close competition amongst distinct magnetostructural states in this compound.

The structural, dielectric, and vibrational properties of pure and rare earth (RE)-doped Ba(0.77) Ca(0.23)TiO(3) (BCT23; RE = Nd, Sm, Pr, Yb) ceramics obtained via solid-state reaction were investigated. The pure and RE-doped BCT23 ceramics sintered at 1450 degrees C in air for 4 h showed a dense microstructure in all ceramics. The use of RE ions as dopants introduced lattice-parameter changes that manifested in the reduction of the volume of the unit cell. RE-doped BCT23 samples exhibit a more homogenous microstructure due to the absence of a Ti-rich phase in the grain boundaries as demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy imaging. The incorporation of REs led to perturbations of the local symmetry of TiO(6) octahedra and the creation of a new Raman mode. The results of Raman scattering measurements indicated that the Curie temperature of the ferroelectric phase transition depends on the RE ion and ion content, with the Curie temperature shifting toward lower values as the RE content increases, with the exception of Yb(3+) doping, which did not affect the ferroelectric phase transition temperature. The phase transition behavior is explained using the standard soft mode model. Electronic paramagnetic resonance measurements showed the existence of Ti vacancies in the structure of RE-doped BCT23. Defects are created via charge compensation mechanisms due to the incorporation of elements with a different valence state relative to the ions of the pure BCT23 host. It is concluded that the Ti vacancies are responsible for the activation of the Raman mode at 840 cm(-1), which is in agreement with lattice dynamics calculations. We report the microwave dielectric properties and photoluminescence of undoped and europium oxide doped Ta(2)O(5) fibers, grown by laser heated pedestal growth technique. The effects of Eu(2)O(3) doping (1-3 mol %) on the structural, optical, and dielectric properties were investigated. At a frequency of 5 GHz, the undoped material exhibits a dielectric permittivity of 21 and for Eu(2)O(3) doped Ta(2)O(5) samples it increases, reaching up to 36 for the highest doping concentration. Nevertheless, the dielectric losses maintain a very low value. For this wide band gap oxide, Eu(3+) optical activation was achieved and the emission is observed up to room temperature. Thus, the transparency and high permittivity make this material promising for electronic devices and microwave applications. (c) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

The knowledge of the atomic structure of clusters composed by few atoms is a basic prerequisite to obtain insights into the mechanisms that determine their chemical and physical properties as a function of diameter, shape, surface termination, as well as to understand the mechanism of bulk formation. Due to the wide use of metal systems in our modern life, the accurate determination of the properties of 3d, 4d, and 5d metal clusters poses a huge problem for nanoscience. In this work, we report a density functional theory study of the atomic structure, binding energies, effective coordination numbers, average bond lengths, and magnetic properties of the 3d, 4d, and 5d metal (30 elements) clusters containing 13 atoms, M(13). First, a set of lowest-energy local minimum structures (as supported by vibrational analysis) were obtained by combining high-temperature first- principles molecular-dynamics simulation, structure crossover, and the selection of five well-known M(13) structures. Several new lower energy configurations were identified, e. g., Pd(13), W(13), Pt(13), etc., and previous known structures were confirmed by our calculations. Furthermore, the following trends were identified: (i) compact icosahedral-like forms at the beginning of each metal series, more opened structures such as hexagonal bilayerlike and double simple-cubic layers at the middle of each metal series, and structures with an increasing effective coordination number occur for large d states occupation. (ii) For Au(13), we found that spin-orbit coupling favors the three-dimensional (3D) structures, i.e., a 3D structure is about 0.10 eV lower in energy than the lowest energy known two-dimensional configuration. (iii) The magnetic exchange interactions play an important role for particular systems such as Fe, Cr, and Mn. (iv) The analysis of the binding energy and average bond lengths show a paraboliclike shape as a function of the occupation of the d states and hence, most of the properties can be explained by the chemistry picture of occupation of the bonding and antibonding states.

In the present work we investigated the electrochemical behavior of PVA on polycrystalline Pt and single-crystal Pt electrodes. PVA hampered the characteristic hydrogen UPD and anion adsorption on all investigated surfaces, with the processes on Pt(110) being the most affected by the PVA presence. Several oxidation waves appeared as the potential was swept in the positive direction and the Pt(111) was found to be the most active for the oxidation processes. This work presents a study of the catalytic oxidation of ethanol on polycrystalline gold electrode in alkaline media. The investigation was carried out by means of chronoamperometry, cyclic voltammetry, and in situ FTIR spectroscopy. The main goal was to investigate the early stages of ethanol electrooxidation, namely at fairly low potentials (E = 600 mV vs. RHE) and for moderate reaction times (t < 300 s). Chronoamperometric experiments show a current increase accompanying the increasing in the ethanol concentration up to about 2 M and then a slight decrease at 3 M. Adsorbed CO has been observed as early as about 200 mV vs. RHE and indicates that the cleavage of the C-C bond might occur, probably to a small extent, at very low overpotentials during ethanol adsorption on gold surface. The amount of dissolved acetate ions produced during the chronoamperomentry was followed by the asymmetric stretching band at 1558 cm(-1) as a function of time, and found to increase linearly with time up to 300 s. This allowed estimating the reaction order of acetate formation with respect to ethanol concentration.

Oxidation of ethanol on ruthenium-modified Pt(775) and Pt(332) stepped electrodes has been studied using electrochemical and FTIR techniques. It has been found that the oxidation of ethanol on these electrodes takes place preferentially on the step sites yielding CO(2) as the major final product. The cleavage of the C-C bond, which is the required step to yield CO(2), occurs only on this type of site. The presence of low ruthenium coverages on the step sites promotes the complete oxidation of ethanol since it facilitates the oxidation of CO formed on the step from the cleavage of the C-C bond. However, high ruthenium coverages have an important inhibiting effect since the adatoms block the step sites, which are required for the cleavage of the C-C bond. Under these conditions, the oxidation current diminishes and the major product in the oxidation process is acetic acid, which is the product formed preferentially on the (111) terrace sites.

Ethanol oxidation on platinum stepped surfaces vicinal to the (111) pole modified by tin has been studied to determine the role of this adatom in the oxidation mechanism. Tin has been slowly deposited so that the initial stages of the deposition take place on the step, and deposition on the terrace only occurs when the step has been completely decorated. Voltammetric and chronoamperometric experiments demonstrate that tin on the step catalyzes the oxidation. The maximum enhancement is found when the step is completely decorated by tin. FTIR experiments using normal and isotopically labeled ethanol have been used to elucidate the effect of the tin adatoms in the mechanism. The obtained results indicate that the role of tin is double: (i) when the surface has sites capable of breaking the C-C bond of the molecule, that is, when the step sites are not completely covered by tin, it promotes the oxidation of CO formed from the molecular fragments to CO(2) through a bifunctional mechanism and (ii) it catalyzes the oxidation of ethanol to acetic acid.

Cuboctahedron (CUB) and icosahedron (ICO) model structures are widely used in the study of transition-metal (TM) nanoparticles (NPs), however, it might not provide a reliable description for small TM NPs such as the Pt(55) and Au(55) systems in gas phase. In this work, we combined density-functional theory calculations with atomic configurations generated by the basin hopping Monte Carlo algorithm within the empirical Sutton-Chen embedded atom potential. We identified alternative lower energy configurations compared with the ICO and CUB model structures, e. g., our lowest energy structures are 5.22 eV (Pt(55)) and 2.01 eV (Au(55)) lower than ICO. The energy gain is obtained by the Pt and Au diffusion from the ICO core region to the NP surface, which is driven by surface compression (only 12 atoms) on the ICO core region. Therefore, in the lowest energy configurations, the core size reduces from 13 atoms (ICO, CUB) to about 9 atoms while the NP surface increases from 42 atoms (ICO, CUB) to about 46 atoms. The present mechanism can provide an improved atom-level understanding of small TM NPs reconstructions.

A mechanism for the kinetic instabilities observed in the galvanostatic electro-oxidation of methanol is suggested and a model developed. The model is investigated using stoichiometric network analysis as well as concepts from algebraic geometry (polynomial rings and ideal theory) revealing the occurrence of a Hopf and a saddle-node bifurcation. These analytical solutions are confirmed by numerical integration of the system of differential equations. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics

Oscillatory kinetics is commonly observed in the electrocatalytic oxidation of most species that can be used in fuel cell devices. Examples include formic acid, methanol, ethanol, ethylene glycol, and hydrogen/carbon monoxide mixtures, and most papers refer to half-cell experiments. We report in this paper the experimental investigation of the oscillatory dynamics in a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell at 30 degrees C. The system consists of a Pt/C cathode fed with oxygen and a PtRu (1:1)/C anode fed with H(2) mixed with 100 ppm of CO, and was studied at different cell currents and anode flow rates. Many different states including periodic and nonperiodic series were observed as a function of the cell current and the H(2)/CO flow rate. In general, aperiodic/chaotic states were favored at high currents and low flow rates. The dynamics was further characterized in terms of the relationship between the oscillation amplitude and the subsequent time required for the anode to get poisoned by carbon monoxide. Results are discussed in terms of the mechanistic aspects of the carbon monoxide adsorption and oxidation. (C) 2010 The Electrochemical Society. [DOI: 10.1149/1.3463725] All rights reserved.
