The expression of ABH and Lewis antigens in Brazilian semi-isolated Black communities

The expression of the ABH and Lewis blood groups was determined in blood and saliva samples from two semi-isolated Black communities of Northern Brazil: Camet�� and Alc��ntara. The distributions of ABO blood group phenotypes and the ABH secretor status frequencies showed no significant differences between these populations. In contrast, there was a difference regarding the frequency of the red blood cell Le(a-b-) phenotypes, associated with erythrocyte/saliva discordance, as confirmed by the observation that individuals with Le(a-b-) red cells have the Lewis antigen in their saliva, resulting in a nongenuine Le(a-b-) phenotype, whose frequency was higher in Alc��ntara.

Aplica����o de s��lica mesoporosa modificada com mol��culas contendo bases de Lewis na pr��-concentra����o de Cd(II) em amostras aquosas

Em raz��o ao uso intensivo e por ser altamente n��o-degrad��vel, o metal Cd (II) tem causado uma grande preocupa����o na sociedade moderna devido a sua capacidade de acumular-se em matrizes ambientais manifestando toxicidade. O projeto teve como objetivo o desenvolvimento da s��ntese da S��lica Mesoporosa para o ancoramento do ligante ��cido Rube��nico sobre a superf��cie do material. A caracteriza����o do mesmo, por espectroscopia na regi��o do infravermelho (FTIR), ap��s a etapa de funcionaliza����o indicou a presen��a de grupamento amina, com banda em 3350 cm-1, bandas na regi��o de 2940 e 2850 cm-1 atribu��das a grupos metileno e a atenua����o da banda C-Cl (700 cm-1), devido ao ancoramento da mol��cula do ligante. O material foi aplicado em experimentos de batelada e o efeito de tempo de contato e do pH sobre a adsor����o de ��ons Cd (II) foi avaliado. O material apresentou cin��tica r��pida, a qual foi alcan��ada em 1 minuto e a maior adsor����o foi atingida em pH 6 (pr��ximo ao ponto de carga zero) para ambos os metais. As condi����es ��timas obtidas foram aplicadas para a determina����o da capacidade m��xima de adsor����o. Os dados obtidos da isoterma de adsor����o foram aplicados �� Equa����o Linearizada de Langmuir, fornecendo 0,03 mmol g-1, com o coeficiente de determina����o dos dados sendo R�� de 0,9961. Na segunda etapa, o material modificado foi aplicado em sistema de fluxo cont��nuo, ajustando as melhores condi����es como massa de amostra, tipos de eluente bem como o volume de eluato. Os resultados das concentra����es do metal foram obtidos por determina����o direta por espectrometria de absor����o at��mica

Caracteriza����o biom��trica e supera����o de dorm��ncia em sementes de Chloroleucon foliolosum (Benth.) G. P. Lewis

The objectives of this work were performing the biometric characterization of seed Chloroleucon foliosolum (Benth) G. P. (Lewis) from the municipality Itua��u - BA, and analyze methods of scarification and temperature on germination. The seeds were characterized according to measurements of length, width and thickness, weight of thousand seeds, and water content. Were employed methods of scarification with sandpaper and sulfuric acid for 15 and 30 minutes, and not scarified seeds, combined with germination temperatures of 20, 25, 30 and 35 ��C. Percentage and germination speed index, and percentage of primary root protrusion, abnormal seedlings, hard seeds and dead seeds were evaluated. The means of length, width and thickness was 6.03, 4.30 and 3.47 mm, respectively. The weight of a thousand seeds was 67.3 g with water content of 6.1%. Whereas the percentage germination with normal seedling, the method of scarification with sulfuric acid for 15 or 30 minutes combined to germination temperatures of 25 or 30 ��C were effective in overcoming dormancy of Chloroleucon foliolosum.

Remarkable coordination behavior of alkyl isocyanides toward unsaturated vicinal frustrated P/B Lewis pairs

The conjugated frustrated phosphane/borane Lewis pairs formed by 1,1-carboboration of a substituted diphenylphosphino acetylene, undergo a synergistic 1,1-addition reaction to n-butyl isocyanide with formation of new B-C and P-C bonds to the former isonitrile carbon atom. Using tert-butyl isocyanide dynamic behaviour between the isocyanide-[B] adduct and the 1,1-addition product formation was observed in solution. The different modes of isocyanide binding to the FLPs in the solid state were characterized using X-ray crystal structure analyses and comprehensive 11B and 31P solid-state magicangle- spinning (MAS-) NMR experiments. The free FLP, the Lewis adduct at the borane group, and the cyclic product resulting from isocyanide addition to both reaction centers, can be differentiated via 11B and 31P isotropic chemical shifts, 11B nuclear electric quadrupole coupling constants, isotropic indirect 11B-31P spin-spin coupling constants, and 11B...31P internuclear distances measured by rotational echo double resonance.

By the three much admired, Robert, late Earle of Essex. Sir Philip Sidney. And, Secretary Davison (1633). Dicho manual contiene tres partes diferenciadas como (a) el material prefatorio formado por una carta dirigida al lector, (b) el manual de instrucciones para el viajero, y (c) dos cartas dirigidas a viajeros noveles. Este libro ha sido objeto de estudio de algunos investigadores desde una perspectiva cultural y literaria, especialmente, la carta redactada por Sidney. Sin embargo, no parece haber sido editado anteriormente en su totalidad ni tampoco el texto ha sido objeto de an��lisis ling����stico y/o textual. Existe, no obstante, alguna edici��n de la carta de Robert Devereux al Conde de Rutland como la realizada por Spedding et al. (1862).

Casualty, Causality and Chivalry: the Myth of Chivalry and Racial Violence in Southern Literature

This honors thesis project uses history and literature to analyze the role of the myth of chivalry in mystifying racial violence and oppression in the American South. The central claim is that the myth of chivalry���� and particularly the exaltation of the white woman���� is a myth system used to justify racial violence, oppress white womanhood, and allow white patriarchy to maintain political, social and economic dominance. This project traces the role of literature, especially Sir Walter Scott����s historical romance, in developing the foundational myths of a southern society based in violence, racial hierarchy and gender inequality. It then follows the role of white womanhood in this myth���� the restrictions on miscegenation, the exaltation of pure white femininity, and the violent actions performed in the name of southern women. With this historical baseline established, this study then explores three works of historical fiction that attempt to subvert this mythology by critiquing and demystifying the myth of chivalry, while also offering counter-narratives to popularized history. These works are Charles Chesnutt����s 1901 novel The Marrow of Tradition����, which analyzes the 1898 Wilmington N.C. race riot, Gwendolyn Brooks���� 1960 poem ����A Bronzeville Mother Loiters in Mississippi. Meanwhile, a Mississippi Mother Burns Bacon���� and Lewis Nordan����s 1993 novel Wolf Whistle, two works about Emmett Till����s tragic murder in 1955. This study, then, illuminates the intersection of literature and mythology, revealing how literature is useful for both creating and subverting myth����and revealing how authors undertake this task.
