Actividades TIC de aplicación directa en el aula

Existe una gran cantidad de páginas web que nos ofrecen herramientas concretas para poder utilizarlas directamente en el aula de matemáticas, pero también podemos localizar webs que ofrecen un auténtico arsenal de recursos que nos pueden ser útiles para los distintos niveles educativos. De entre esas últimas, vamos a destacar en este número de SUMA la web cuya dirección es www.ematematicas.net

La potencia de las TIC para el cálculo simbólico

Desde esta sección MatemásTIC intentamos en cada número dar a conocer alguna herramienta informática relacionada con las matemáticas a la que poder sacarle partido en el aula. Dada la apuesta que desde distintas comunidades autónomas se ha hecho o se está haciendo por el software libre, las herramientas que damos a conocer son para este tipo de sistemas, existiendo en algunos casos la réplica de la misma aplicación para sistemas propietarios.

Matemáticas lúdicas

Seguimos adelante con el recorrido que hemos comenzado por las TIC y su uso en el aula de matemáticas en esta sección MatemásTIC. Si el primer número de la sección lo dedicamos a una aplicación de software libre para el desarrollo del cálculo mental y el segundo a una aplicación para la práctica de la geometría interactiva, en esta tercera hemos optado por una aplicación lúdica de contenido matemático.

Tuxmath: un juego para el cálculo mental

Con este número, estrenamos MatemásTIC. Aunque el nombre ya deja entrever lo que pueden ser los contenidos que podemos encontrar, por la amplia variedad de los mismos, nos hemos marcado unos objetivos claros que nos sirvan de referencia para la estructura, temas y forma en la que se van a tratar.

La marcha Dufour: Un recurso para hacer matemáticas en la calle

Dufour inventó un sistema de representación geográfica basado en principios topológicos en lugar de los principios geométricos de los mapas, croquis y planos habituales. La llamada marcha Doufour, aunque de origen militar, se emplea actualmente en actividades excursionistas y alpinistas para moverse por la montaña, pero es fácilmente adaptable a recorridos urbanos. Posee enormes posibilidades didácticas de carácter abstracto, obligando a los usuarios a desarrollar no sólo pautas de orientación sino también de razonamiento lógico sistemático. Ha sido utilizada con éxito en pruebas de calle de olimpiadas matemáticas.

El aprendizaje por descubrimiento dirigido aplicado a la enseñanza de las matemáticas

Robert Glaser, en su artículo titulado “Variables en el aprendizaje por descubrimiento”, resalta que es la inducción el método seguido en el aprendizaje por descubrimiento, pero que la inducción lleva implícito el aprendizaje con errores.

A couple of embroiled sheets of Miguel Barnades Manaider and Esteban de Prado in the Herbaria of Real Colegio Alfonso XII of San Lorenzo de El Escorial (Madrid)

In this paper we present a couple of sheets of Umbelliferae that are preserved in the RCAXII herbaria. One of them, Selinum carvifolia, where collected in the Gredos Mountains by Miguel Barnades Mainader and was identified by his son Miguel Barnades Clarís. The other, Tragium flabellifolium, was collected in Mieres (Asturias) by Esteban de Prado and identified by Mariano La Gasca.

Contribución al conocimiento melitopalinológico de Sierra Morena

Sc ha estudiado al microscopio óptico el sedimento de once muestras de miel de diversas localidades del este de Sierra Morena. Se pone de manifiesto que, en este área, el néctar de flores es la principal fuenle de miel para Apis mellifera,siendo la mielada poco importante. Echium plantagineum, Lavandula stoechas y Eucalyptus camaldulensis son las principales fuentes de miel en este área, en tanto que Cistus ladanifer, C. albidus, Olea europaea y Quercus sp. lo son de polen.

Philosophy and Politics in the 20th in Argentina. Readings of Italian Idealism

The transition from a positivist matrix to an idealistic one in Argentinean academic philosophy can be read as a result of a gradual and problematic pollution. It was, also, heavily traversed by considerations that exceeded the theoretical aspects. Based on the willingness to explore this transit, the article pays attention to one of the episodes of this contamination: how the Revista de Filosofía reads Croce and Gentile’s philosophy. Observing there some possibility of dialogue between positivist assumptions, with which the journal takes a position, and the idealism the article analyze how this dialogue and its limits were given from a political consideration. If the idealism was condemned, it is centrally owed to its performance during the first years of the government of Mussolini. If, meanwhile, it was some to rescue of that philosophy, it was that it contributed to think the revolutionary change.

Structure and kinetics of phosphonopyruvate hydrolase from Variovorax sp. Pal2: New insight into the divergence of catalysis within the PEP mutase/isocitrate lyase superfamily .

Phosphonopyruvate (P-pyr) hydrolase (PPH), a member of the phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) mutase/isocitrate lyase (PEPM/ICL) superfamily, hydrolyzes P-pyr and shares the highest sequence identity and functional similarity with PEPM. Recombinant PPH from Variovorax sp. Pal2 was expressed in Escherichia coli and purified to homogeneity. Analytical gel filtration indicated that the protein exists in solution predominantly as a tetramer. The PPH pH rate profile indicates maximal activity over a broad pH range.The steady-state kinetic constants determined for a rapid equilibrium ordered kinetic mechanism with Mg+2 binding first (Kd =140 ± 40 M), are kcat = 105 ± 2 s-1 and P-pyr Km = 5 ± 1 M. PEP (slow substrate kcat = 2 × 10-4 s-1), oxalate, and sulfopyruvate are competitive inhibitors with Ki values of 2.0 ± 0.1 mM, 17 ± 1 M, and 210 ± 10 M, respectively. Three PPH crystal structures have been determined, that of a ligand-free enzyme, the enzyme bound to Mg2+ and oxalate (inhibitor), and the enzyme bound to Mg2+ and P-pyr (substrate). The complex with the inhibitor was obtained by cocrystallization, whereas that with the substrate was obtained by briefly soaking crystals of the ligand-free enzyme with P-pyr prior to flash cooling. The PPH structure resembles that of the other members of the PEPM/ICL superfamily and is most similar to the functionally related enzyme, PEPM. Each monomer of the dimer of dimers exhibits an (/)8 barrel fold with the eighth helix swapped between two molecules of the dimer. Both P-pyr and oxalate are anchored to the active site by Mg2+. The loop capping the active site is disordered in all three structures, in contrast to PEPM, where the equivalent loop adopts an open or disordered conformation in the unbound state but sequesters the inhibitor from solvent in the bound state. Crystal packing may have favored the open conformation of PPH even when the enzyme was cocrystallized with the oxalate inhibitor. Structure alignment of PPH with other superfamily members revealed two pairs of invariant or conservatively replaced residues that anchor the flexible gating loop. The proposed PPH catalytic mechanism is analogous to that of PEPM but includes activation of a water nucleophile with the loop Thr118 residue.

Alien gosd in the new epics: Noah remythologised through the ancient astronaut hypothesis in Abel's Montagut's "La gesta d'Utnoa"

Modern scientific world-view has undermined traditional myths, the functional survival of which seems to depend today in the West on a positivist justification. This would place them in the field of real History, through their study and revitalization by pseudoscientific disciplines such as the Atlantis and the ancient astronaut hypotheses. These have inspired new epic poems in (regular) verse that combine classic and/or biblical myths with a (pseudo)scientific modern world-view. For example, the critical rewriting of Noah’s myth by using the ancient astronaut hypothesis as a fictional device to produce a contemporary kind of plausibility allowed Abel Montagut to renew epic poetry, updating it also by adopting science fiction chronotopes in order to structure his fictional construction and to generate a high ethical sense for our time. Thus, his Poemo de Utnoa (1993) / La gesta d’Utnoa (1996), which has become a major classic of the literature in Esperanto thanks to its original version in this language, is a landmark of both science fiction and neo-biblical epics. This poem is written from a secular and purely literary perspective.

The "Art" of Criticism: Rubén Darío and his Unknown Chronicles of the 1895 Salon for "La Prensa"

With the impetus that has led recent studies on Latin American Modernism to a reevaluation of the sense of cultural fluxes from the modernity capitals to its peripheries –discarding categories such as “influence”, “exotism” and “ivory tower”, stereotypes that have clouded critical understanding of this aesthetics for decades- the present study intends to investigate a persistent practice of the main writers of the movement. This practice is modernist pictorial criticism, a genre that will be approached through the analysis of an unknown corpus: the seven chronicles Rubén Darío published in the journal La Prensa on occasion of the third art exposition of the Ateneo de Buenos Aires. Our hypothesis is that the rare creators of images portrayed by Darío by the end of 1895 work as a visual counterpoint of the eccentric writers’ biographical sketches that a year later will be part of the fundamental volume Los raros (1896). In this early “salon”, which we reproduce in its entirety, accompanied by explanatory notes, the leader of Modernism rehearses and consolidates his transcultural work with the universal tradition –now applied to the Salons (1845-1860) by Charles Baudelaire and to the monumental project by John Ruskin in Modern painters (1843-1860)- to legitimate, from another subgenre of Modernist criticism, a new figure of the critic, in dissent with the Enlightenment model of the writer.

Del Fichero supremo a la Biblioteca de Babel: Salaverría, precursor de Borges

A juzgar por alguna declaración más bien negativa de Borges sobre la literatura española, se podría creer que esta no influyó demasiado en él. Sin embargo, existen indicios de que pudo haberse inspirado también en determinados escritores españoles coetáneos hoy casi olvidados. Uno de ellos pudo ser José María Salaverría, entre cuyos relatos destaca “El fichero supremo” (1926), del que se ha dicho que “anticipa algunas de las preocupaciones características de un tipo de relato que Jorge Luis Borges elevará años después a la máxima categoría estética”. De hecho, recuerda a “La biblioteca de Babel” (1941) borgiana por su planteamiento hasta el punto de que podría pensarse que el maestro argentino pudo tener presente, a la hora de escribir esa obra maestra, ese cuento de Salaverría, el cual se publicó por primera vez en Caras y Caretas, una revista porteña que Borges reconoció “devorar” en su juventud. Sin embargo, el interés mayor de la comparación entre “El fichero supremo” y “La biblioteca de Babel” no radica tanto en el carácter de posible fuente del primero como en el contraste entre sus formas de presentación narrativa: desde fuera y en tercera persona en Salaverría, en un marco realista; y desde dentro y en primera persona, prácticamente sin marco, en Borges. Este parece desarrollar, en el registro propio de la “imaginación razonada” descrito por él mismo, una virtualidad presente en el relato de Salaverría, cuya comparación con “La biblioteca de Babel” puede suscitar también alguna reflexión sobre el enigma de la identidad y el carácter de la voz enunciadora de la biblioteca universal de Babel. Al menos, esta parece haber hecho realidad en cierto modo, de forma sublime, el patético sueño divino del archivero imaginado por Salaverría.

La música práctica en san Agustín: "vestigium" y "signum"

En distintos momentos de su producción intelectual, Agustín se refirió al asunto de la música. En este artículo mostraremos que Agustín uso dos esquemas conceptuales distintos para describir el fenómeno de la música práctica en su relación con el mundo espiritual, el esquema de las Artes Liberales y el de la teoría del signo, y que en virtud de ello la música sería concebida de dos modos diferentes: como vestigium y como signum del mundo espiritual, respectivamente. Al final del artículo analizaremos la diferencia entre las dos concepciones considerando tres elementos: la naturaleza de la relación entre mundo material y espiritual, el contenido espiritual al que remite y la noción de belleza que implica.

Divergence of chemical function in the alkaline phosphatase superfamily: Structure and mechanism of the P-C bond cleaving enzyme phosphonoacetate hydrolase

Phosphonates constitute a class of natural products that mimic the properties of the more common organophosphate ester metabolite yet are not readily degraded owing to the direct linkage of the phosphorus atom to the carbon atom. Phosphonate hydrolases have evolved to allow bacteria to utilize environmental phosphonates as a source of carbon and phosphorus. The work reported in this paper examines one such enzyme, phosphonoacetate hydrolase. By using a bioinformatic approach, we circumscribed the biological range of phosphonoacetate hydrolase to a select group of bacterial species from different classes of Proteobacteria. In addition, using gene context, we identified a novel 2-aminoethylphosphonate degradation pathway in which phosphonoacetate hydrolase is a participant. The X-ray structure of phosphonoformate-bound phosphonoacetate hydrolase was determined to reveal that this enzyme is most closely related to nucleotide pyrophosphatase/diesterase, a promiscuous two-zinc ion metalloenzyme of the alkaline phosphatase enzyme superfamily. The X-ray structure and metal ion specificity tests showed that phosphonoacetate hydrolase is also a two-zinc ion metalloenzyme. By using site-directed mutagenesis and P-32-labeling strategies, the catalytic nucleophile was shown to be Thr64. A structure-guided, site-directed mutation-based inquiry of the catalytic contributions of active site residues identified Lys126 and Lys128 as the most likely candidates for stabilization of the aci-carboxylate dianion leaving group. A catalytic mechanism is proposed which combines Lys12/Lys128 leaving group stabilization with zinc ion activation of the Thr64 nucleophile and the substrate phosphoryl group.
