Reaaliaikaisten käyttöjärjestelmien käyttö sulautetuissa järjestelmissä on kasvamassa koko ajan. Sulautettuja tietokoneita käytetään yhä useammassa kohteessa kuten sähkökäyttöjen ohjauksessa. Sähkökäyttöjen ohjaus hoidetaan nykyisin yleensä nopealla digitaalisella signaaliprosessorilla (DSP), jolloin ohjelmointi ja päivittäminen on hidasta ja vaikeaa johtuen käytettävästä matalan tason Assembler-kielestä. Ratkaisuna yleiskäyttöisten prosessorien ja reaaliaikakäyttöjärjestelmien käyttö. Kaupalliset reaaliaikakäyttöjärjestelmät ovat kalliita ja lähdekoodin saaminen omaan käyttöön jopa mahdotonta. Linux on ei-kaupallinen avoimen lähdekoodin käyttöjärjestelmä, joten sen käyttö on ilmaista ja sitä voi muokata vapaasti. Linux:iin on saatavana useita laajennuksia, jotka tekevät siitä reaaliaikaisen käyttöjärjestelmän. Vaihtoehtoina joko kova (hard) tai pehmeä (soft) reaaliaikaisuus. Linux:iin on olemassa valmiita kehitysympäristöjä mutta ne kaipaavat parannusta ennen kuin niitä voidaan käyttää suuressa mittakaavassa teollisuudessa. Reaaliaika Linux ei sovellus nopeisiin ohjauslooppeihin (<100 ms) koska nopeus ei riitä vielä mutta nopeus kasvaa samalla kun prosessorit kehittyvät. Linux soveltuu hyvin rajapinnaksi nopean ohjauksen ja käyttäjän välille ja hitaampaan ohjaukseen.

The structure of the electric double layer in contact with discrete and continuously charged planar surfaces is studied within the framework of the primitive model through Monte Carlo simulations. Three different discretization models are considered together with the case of uniform distribution. The effect of discreteness is analyzed in terms of charge density profiles. For point surface groups,a complete equivalence with the situation of uniformly distributed charge is found if profiles are exclusively analyzed as a function of the distance to the charged surface. However, some differences are observed moving parallel to the surface. Significant discrepancies with approaches that do not account for discreteness are reported if charge sites of finite size placed on the surface are considered.

This thesis studies the possibilities to recover energy in a hydraulic forklift system. Controlling of the system is done directly with an electric servo motor drive and a hydraulic pump. A real system was built and tested and simulations of the system were made with Matlab. Results of the system and simulations were analysed and compared and according to them, energy can be recovered efficiently from the hydraulic forklift system. Also new ideas and directions of further research were obtained with the help of this research.

A hybrid electric vehicle is a fast-growing concept in the field of vehicle industry. Nowadays two global problems make manufactures to develop such systems. These problems are: the growing cost of a fuel and environmental pollution. Also development of controlled electric drive with high control accuracy and reliability allows improving of vehicle drive characteristics. The objective of this Diploma Thesis is to investigate the possibilities of electrical drive application for new principle of parallel hybrid vehicle system. Electric motor calculations, selection of most suitable control system and other calculations are needed. This work is not final work for such topic. Further investigation with more precise calculations, modeling, measurements and cost calculations are needed to answer the question if such system is efficient.

Neuronal circuit asymmetries are important components of brain circuits, but the molecular pathways leading to their establishment remain unknown. Here we found that the mutation of FRMD7, a gene that is defective in human congenital nystagmus, leads to the selective loss of the horizontal optokinetic reflex in mice, as it does in humans. This is accompanied by the selective loss of horizontal direction selectivity in retinal ganglion cells and the transition from asymmetric to symmetric inhibitory input to horizontal direction-selective ganglion cells. In wild-type retinas, we found FRMD7 specifically expressed in starburst amacrine cells, the interneuron type that provides asymmetric inhibition to direction-selective retinal ganglion cells. This work identifies FRMD7 as a key regulator in establishing a neuronal circuit asymmetry, and it suggests the involvement of a specific inhibitory neuron type in the pathophysiology of a neurological disease. Data transmission between an electric motor and a frequency converter is required in variablespeed electric drives because of sensors installed at the motor. Sensor information can be used for various useful applications to improve the system reliability and its properties. Traditionally, the communication medium is implemented by an additional cabling. However, the costs of the traditional method may be an obstacle to the wider application of data transmission between a motor and a frequency converter. In any case, a power cable is always installed between a motor and a frequency converter for power supply, and hence it may be applied as a communication medium for sensor level data. This thesis considers power line communication (PLC) in inverter-fed motor power cables. The motor cable is studied as a communication channel in the frequency band of 100 kHz−30 MHz. The communication channel and noise characteristics are described. All the individual components included in a variable-speed electric drive are presented in detail. A channel model is developed, and it is verified by measurements. A theoretical channel information capacity analysis is carried out to estimate the opportunities of a communication medium. Suitable communication and forward error correction (FEC) methods are suggested. A general method to implement a broadband and Ethernet-based communication medium between a motor and a frequency converter is proposed. A coupling interface is also developed that allows to install the communication device safely to a three-phase inverter-fed motor power cable. Practical tests are carried out, and the results are analyzed. Possible applications for the proposed method are presented. A speed feedback motor control application is verified in detail by simulations and laboratory tests because of restrictions for the delay in the feedback loop caused by PLC. Other possible applications are discussed at a more general level.

This paper proposes a calibration method which can be utilized for the analysis of SEM images. The field of application of the developed method is a calculation of surface potential distribution of biased silicon edgeless detector. The suggested processing of the data collected by SEM consists of several stages and takes into account different aspects affecting the SEM image. The calibration method doesn’t pretend to be precise but at the same time it gives the basics of potential distribution when the different biasing voltages applied to the detector.

This Master’s Thesis work reports about electric field distribution in recently developed silicon edgeless detector with a new current terminating structure. This structure enables the essential reduction of insensitive detector area as well as allows separation of the current flowing through the active area from the current flowing at the cut edge. The reliable operation of this detector is strongly needed due to the installation inside LHC. In accordance with formulated problems SEM was used as an investigation tool for collecting the data about electric field distribution.

Self-sustained time-dependent current oscillations under dc voltage bias have been observed in recent experiments on n-doped semiconductor superlattices with sequential resonant tunneling. The current oscillations are caused by the motion and recycling of the domain wall separating low- and high-electric-field regions of the superlattice, as the analysis of a discrete drift model shows and experimental evidence supports. Numerical simulation shows that different nonlinear dynamical regimes of the domain wall appear when an external microwave signal is superimposed on the dc bias and its driving frequency and driving amplitude vary. On the frequency-amplitude parameter plane, there are regions of entrainment and quasiperiodicity forming Arnold tongues. Chaos is demonstrated to appear at the boundaries of the tongues and in the regions where they overlap. Coexistence of up to four electric-field domains randomly nucleated in space is detected under ac+dc driving.

This work proposes a fully-digital interface circuit for the measurement of inductive sensors using a low-cost microcontroller (µC) and without any intermediate active circuit. Apart from the µC and the sensor, the circuit just requires an external resistor and a reference inductance so that two RL circuits with a high-pass filter (HPF) topology are formed. The µC appropriately excites such RL circuits in order to measure the discharging time of the voltage across each inductance (i.e. sensing and reference) and then it uses such discharging times to estimate the sensor inductance. Experimental tests using a commercial µC show a non-linearity error (NLE) lower than 0.5%FSS (Full-Scale Span) when measuring inductances from 1 mH to 10 mH, and from 10 mH to 100 mH.

Normaalisti radiovastaanottimet on luokiteltavissa suoriin vastaanottimiin ja superheterodynevastaanottimiin. Jälkimmäistä nimitetään tavallisesti supervastaanottimeksi. Molemman vastaanottimen oleellisiin osiin kuuluu antennin virityspiiri, supervastaanottimelle lisäksi paikallisoskillaattorin virityspiiri, mikä pitää virittää antennipiirin kanssa samanaikaisesti. Pienillä taajuuksilla, taajuudet luokassa kilo-Hertzejä tai pienemmillä, on antennipiirin viritys resonanssipiirin ominaisuuksista johtuen sitä kapeammalla kaistalla ja sitä hitaampaa mitä pienemmällä taajuudella vastaanotto tapahtuu. Lisäksi virityspiiri hyvyysluku Q on vaikea saada sopivaksi, mikäli viritys on muuten käytännöllinen, säädettävä resonanssipiiri. Vaadittaessa kiinteätaajuista viritystä on käytännöllistä hyödyntää sähkömekaanisia osia, siis keraamisia tai kvartsikiteitä. Koska kiteitten ja korkean hyvyysluvun piirin värähtely jatkuu useita värähtelyjaksoja ennen saapuneitten värähtelyjen sammumista, kestää myös kauan aikaa, ennen kuin värähtely piirissä on loppu. Pienitaajuinen resonanssipiiri saavuttaa maksimivirtansa hitaasti, jos hyvyysluku on iso, kun piiri alkaa johtaa resonanssitaajuista virtaa. Tässä työssä pyritään vastaanotinjärjestelyyn ongelmallisen, pientaajuisen virityspiirin käytön välttämiseksi. Toisena tavoitteena on saada aikaan vastaanotto siten, että tietty pienitaajuinen radiotaajuusalue voidaan kokonaisuudessaan vastaanottaa jatkuva-aikaisesti, ilman antennipiirin jatkuvaa virittämistä erillisille taajuuksille. Laaditaan kytkentä, joka mitoitetaan, simuloidaan ja mitataan.

An oscillating overvoltage has become a common phenomenon at the motor terminal in inverter-fed variable-speed drives. The problem has emerged since modern insulated gate bipolar transistors have become the standard choice as the power switch component in lowvoltage frequency converter drives. Theovervoltage phenomenon is a consequence of the pulse shape of inverter output voltage and impedance mismatches between the inverter, motor cable, and motor. The overvoltages are harmful to the electric motor, and may cause, for instance, insulation failure in the motor. Several methods have been developed to mitigate the problem. However, most of them are based on filtering with lossy passive components, the drawbacks of which are typically their cost and size. In this doctoral dissertation, application of a new active du/dt filtering method based on a low-loss LC circuit and active control to eliminate the motor overvoltages is discussed. The main benefits of the method are the controllability of the output voltage du/dt within certain limits, considerably smaller inductances in the filter circuit resulting in a smaller physical component size, and excellent filtering performance when compared with typical traditional du/dt filtering solutions. Moreover, no additional components are required, since the active control of the filter circuit takes place in the process of the upper-level PWM modulation using the same power switches as the inverter output stage. Further, the active du/dt method will benefit from the development of semiconductor power switch modules, as new technologies and materials emerge, because the method requires additional switching in the output stage of the inverter and generation of narrow voltage pulses. Since additional switching is required in the output stage, additional losses are generated in the inverter as a result of the application of the method. Considerations on the application of the active du/dt filtering method in electric drives are presented together with experimental data in order to verify the potential of the method.

FPGA- piirit ovat viime vuosina kehittyneet tehokkaammiksi, mutta samalla niiden hinta on laskenut tasolle, jolloin ne ovat vaihtoehto yhä useampiin sovelluksiin. Kandidaatintyöni aiheena oli suunnitella ja mahdollisesti toteuttaa sulautettu laite, joka laskisi signaalissa esiintyvien pulssien lukumäärää. Sitä käytettäisiin mitattaessa kipinöintiä sähkömoottorin laakeroinnissa. Kipinät havaitaan moottorin ulkopuolelta UHF- antennilla. Antennisignaalista poimittavat pulssit ovat hyvin nopeita, joten digitaaliselta logiikalta vaaditaan myös erityistä nopeutta. Tämän takia laitetta lähdettiin toteuttamaan esimerkiksi mikrokontrollerin sijasta FPGA- piirin avulla. Pulssilaskurin toteutus onnistui suhteellisen vaivattomasti FPGAlla, ja sen toimivuutta käytännössä päästiin testaamaan todellisissa olosuhteissa.

In this thesis an electric propulsion system is designed on a device level using Cadence ORCAD. The vehicle belongs to the Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sci-ences and it is to compete in the Automotive X-Prize competition held in the USA. In this thesis the electric propulsion system and related electric safety measures are designed. Also electro-magnetic compatibility and interferences present in the system are examined by examining the birth mechanisms and transmission paths of interference. Per device effects of interference and solutions to minimize them were examined and proposed. Suitability of permanent magnet synchronous machines for passenger vehicle use was examined by examining the torque production capability of the motor and the torque requirements of the vehicle. Also a short overview of history of electric vehicles is given.

The main idea of this diploma work is to study electric field distribution on the micro level. For this purpose a silicon edgeless detector was chosen as the object of investigation and scanning electron microscope as an investigation tool. Silicon edgeless detector is an important part of installation for studying proton-proton interactions in TOTEM experiment at Large Hadron Collider. For measurement of electric field distribution inside scanning electron microscope a voltage contrast method was applied.
