Kawamoto’s "Dojoji Temple": Puppetry, Gesture and Myth

Dojoji Temple ( Dōjōji, 1976) is a short puppet animation directed by Kihachirō Kawamoto. Influenced by Bunraku (Japanese puppet plays), emaki (painted scroll), Noh theatre and Japanese myth, Dojoji Temple tells of a woman’s unrequited love for a young priest. Heartbroken, she then transforms into a sea serpent and goes after the priest for revenge. While Kawamoto’s animation is rich with Japanese aesthetics and tragedy, his animation is peopled by puppets who do not speak. Limited and restrained though the puppets may be, their animated gestures speak volumes of powerful emotions. For our article, we will select several scenes from the animation, and interpret their actions so that we can further understand the mythical world of Dojoji Temple and the essential being of puppetry. Our gesture analysis will take into account cinematographic compositions, sound and bodily attires, among other elements.

Niagara Region Newspaper Collection, 1811-1998 [non-inclusive]

Selected issues of historical newspapers of local interest, with dates starting from the mid-1800's, originally in the collections of the St. Catharines Public Library, the St. Catharines Historical Museum, and Brock University Library until they were microfilmed at which time they were transferred to Brock University Archives. The collection includes newspapers from various communities in the Niagara Region. The inventory includes the title of the newspaper and the issues available. Complete runs for each newspaper are virtually non extent.

Phelps Family Papers [photocopy]

Oliver Phelps, son of Noah and Sarah (Adams) Phelps, was born in 1779 in Connecticut. In 1800 he married Abigail St. John, daughter of Lt. Samuel St. John and his wife Lois Hamilton. They had 9 daughters and 7 sons. Oliver Phelps came to Canada as a contractor on the first Welland Canal. In addition, he became a land owner and mill owner in partnership with William Hamilton Merritt. Oliver Phelps died in 1851 in Cayuga, Ontario along the Grand River. Some correspondence originates from a place called “Deep Cut”, an earlier name for the village of Allanburg, Thorold Township, Welland County.

Temple Grandin fonds, 1974-2006 (non-inclusive)

Temple Grandin was born in Boston, Massachusetts on August 29,1947 to Richard Grandin and Eustacia Cutler. She was diagnosed with autism at age 2. She suffered from delayed speech development and did not begin to speak until the age of 4. Temple’s mother defied the doctors and kept her out of institutions. Temple was given speech therapy as well as an intensive education. Her high school science teacher and her aunt on a ranch in Arizona inspired Temple to continue her studies and pursue a career as a scientist and livestock equipment designer.She graduated from Hampshire Country School (a boarding school for gifted children) in Ridge, New Hampshire in 1966, and earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Franklin Pierce College in 1970. In 1975, she received a master’s degree in animal science from Arizona State University and then a doctoral degree in animal science from the University of Illinois in 1989. She is currently a professor at Colorado State University. Dr. Grandin is one of the world’s leaders in the design of livestock handling facilities. She has done extensive work in design of handling facilities for animals and has developed animal welfare guidelines for the meat industries. Dr. Grandin is a past member of the board of directors of the Autism Society of America. She lectures to parents and teachers throughout the U.S. on her experiences with autism. She makes the case that the world needs people on the autism spectrum: visual thinkers, pattern thinkers and verbal thinkers. Some of Temple Grandin’s books include: Animals Make Us Human, Animals in Translation, The Way I See It, The Autistic Brain, and Different…Not Less. In 2010, a movie entitled “Temple Grandin” starring Clare Danes was released. The movie was based on Grandin’s own writings. Temple Grandin is an expert on animal behavior, a bestselling author, and an autism activist. In 2010, she was listed in the “Heroes” category in the “Time” list of the world’s 100 most influential people. She has received numerous awards including an honorary doctorate from McGill, the University of Illinois and Duke University. The Mackenzie Heritage Printery Museum in Queenston, Ontario, is Canada’s largest working printing museum. The museum is housed in the 19th century home of William Lyon Mackenzie, a journalist and politician who published the Colonial Advocate and was instrumental in the Rebellion of 1837. The museum contains a Louis Roy Press, the oldest in Canada and one of the few original wooden presses remaining in the world.

Scholarship as a Conversation: A Metaphor for Librarian-ESL Instructor Collaboration

Invoking the metaphor of scholarship as a conversation offers academic librarians an excellent way to connect information literacy to university ESL (English as a second language) classes. This article describes how this particular metaphor has appeared in the literature of librarianship, and it suggests that this metaphor offers a deeper way to understand and promote information literacy to ESL students. It connects this deeper understanding of information literacy to ESL writing and speaking instructional approaches. These approaches include understanding scholarship as both a formal written end product and as a writing process in the creation, production and dissemination of knowledge. In addition, understanding scholarship as a conversation is described as including recognition of both formal and informal means of communication. Practical examples of classroom activities are also offered that librarians can use to support these different ways of illustrating scholarship as a conversation. Collaboration between librarians and instructors is advocated in order to fully invoke this metaphor as a way to connect information literacy to ESL classrooms.

Erfahrungsbericht: Praktische Umsetzung des Informationsmanagements

Das Handling digitaler Informationen und ihre Integration in bestehende Bibliotheksdienstleistungen sind heutzutage eine der wichtigsten Aufgaben von Bibliotheken. Am Beispiel der Bibliothek der Gesamthochschule Kassel wird gezeigt, wie die entwickelten Lösungen von den organisatorischen, funktionalen und baulichen Gegebenheiten beeinflußt worden sind. Beschrieben werden zudem die technische Plattformen sowie das Zusammenwirken unterschiedlicher Dienste bis hin zum Aufbau eines eigenen Verlages für elektronische Publikationen.

Rezentralisierung: Server-Based Computing in der Praxis einer Universitätsbibliothek

Der Beitrag beschreibt die Ein- und Durchführung einer Server-basierten Computerinfrastruktur in einer Universitätsbibliothek. Beschrieben wird das so genannte MetaFrame-DV-Konzept der Universitätsbibliothek Kassel, das das dortige Informationsmanagement in den letzten vier Jahren initiiert, konzipiert und umgesetzt hat. Hierbei werden nunmehr nicht mehr nur Applikationsserver z.B. für das CD-Angebot eingesetzt, sondern sämtliche ca. 200 Mitarbeiter- und Funktionsarbeitsplätze über eine Citrix MetaFrame-Installation serverseitig betreut. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt in diesem Beitrag der Konfiguration, der praktischen Administration und den täglichen Arbeitsbedingungen an den Bibliotheksmitarbeiterarbeitsplätzen.
