Teacher observation has shown that some pupils achieve very high on the Kangaroo Competition test (KC) but very low on the Swedish National test in Mathematics (SNM). This study will investigate the number of pupils who have high achievement scores on the KC (top 10%) but low achievement scores on the SNM (bottom 50%). Individual results on the SNM given in grade 6 (age 12) will be compared to results on the KC given in grade 7; concerning approximately 700 individuals. Results will give an example of the quantity of mathematically able pupils who underachieve in School Mathematics in Sweden. Data interpretation will connect this study to international research concerning mathematical abilities and mathematical achievement among mathematically able pupils.

Background Physical activity in children with intellectual disabilities is a neglected area of study, which is most apparent in relation to physical activity measurement research. Although objective measures, specifically accelerometers, are widely used in research involving children with intellectual disabilities, existing research is based on measurement methods and data interpretation techniques generalised from typically developing children. However, due to physiological and biomechanical differences between these populations, questions have been raised in the existing literature on the validity of generalising data interpretation techniques from typically developing children to children with intellectual disabilities. Therefore, there is a need to conduct population-specific measurement research for children with intellectual disabilities and develop valid methods to interpret accelerometer data, which will increase our understanding of physical activity in this population. Methods Study 1: A systematic review was initially conducted to increase the knowledge base on how accelerometers were used within existing physical activity research involving children with intellectual disabilities and to identify important areas for future research. A systematic search strategy was used to identify relevant articles which used accelerometry-based monitors to quantify activity levels in ambulatory children with intellectual disabilities. Based on best practice guidelines, a novel form was developed to extract data based on 17 research components of accelerometer use. Accelerometer use in relation to best practice guidelines was calculated using percentage scores on a study-by-study and component-by-component basis. Study 2: To investigate the effect of data interpretation methods on the estimation of physical activity intensity in children with intellectual disabilities, a secondary data analysis was conducted. Nine existing sets of child-specific ActiGraph intensity cut points were applied to accelerometer data collected from 10 children with intellectual disabilities during an activity session. Four one-way repeated measures ANOVAs were used to examine differences in estimated time spent in sedentary, moderate, vigorous, and moderate to vigorous intensity activity. Post-hoc pairwise comparisons with Bonferroni adjustments were additionally used to identify where significant differences occurred. Study 3: The feasibility on a laboratory-based calibration protocol developed for typically developing children was investigated in children with intellectual disabilities. Specifically, the feasibility of activities, measurements, and recruitment was investigated. Five children with intellectual disabilities and five typically developing children participated in 14 treadmill-based and free-living activities. In addition, resting energy expenditure was measured and a treadmill-based graded exercise test was used to assess cardiorespiratory fitness. Breath-by-breath respiratory gas exchange and accelerometry were continually measured during all activities. Feasibility was assessed using observations, activity completion rates, and respiratory data. Study 4: Thirty-six children with intellectual disabilities participated in a semi-structured school-based physical activity session to calibrate accelerometry for the estimation of physical activity intensity. Participants wore a hip-mounted ActiGraph wGT3X+ accelerometer, with direct observation (SOFIT) used as the criterion measure. Receiver operating characteristic curve analyses were conducted to determine the optimal accelerometer cut points for sedentary, moderate, and vigorous intensity physical activity. Study 5: To cross-validate the calibrated cut points and compare classification accuracy with existing cut points developed in typically developing children, a sub-sample of 14 children with intellectual disabilities who participated in the school-based sessions, as described in Study 4, were included in this study. To examine the validity, classification agreement was investigated between the criterion measure of SOFIT and each set of cut points using sensitivity, specificity, total agreement, and Cohenâs kappa scores. Results Study 1: Ten full text articles were included in this review. The percentage of review criteria met ranged from 12%âˆ47%. Various methods of accelerometer use were reported, with most use decisions not based on population-specific research. A lack of measurement research, specifically the calibration/validation of accelerometers for children with intellectual disabilities, is limiting the ability of researchers to make appropriate and valid accelerometer use decisions. Study 2: The choice of cut points had significant and clinically meaningful effects on the estimation of physical activity intensity and sedentary behaviour. For the 71-minute session, estimations for time spent in each intensity between cut points ranged from: sedentary = 9.50 (± 4.97) to 31.90 (± 6.77) minutes; moderate = 8.10 (± 4.07) to 40.40 (± 5.74) minutes; vigorous = 0.00 (± .00) to 17.40 (± 6.54) minutes; and moderate to vigorous = 8.80 (± 4.64) to 46.50 (± 6.02) minutes. Study 3: All typically developing participants and one participant with intellectual disabilities completed the protocol. No participant met the maximal criteria for the graded exercise test or attained a steady state during the resting measurements. Limitations were identified with the usability of respiratory gas exchange equipment and the validity of measurements. The school-based recruitment strategy was not effective, with a participation rate of 6%. Therefore, a laboratory-based calibration protocol was not feasible for children with intellectual disabilities. Study 4: The optimal vertical axis cut points (cpm) were ⤠507 (sedentary), 1008âˆ2300 (moderate), and ⥠2301 (vigorous). Sensitivity scores ranged from 81âˆ88%, specificity 81âˆ85%, and AUC .87âˆ.94. The optimal vector magnitude cut points (cpm) were ⤠1863 (sedentary), ⥠2610 (moderate) and ⥠4215 (vigorous). Sensitivity scores ranged from 80âˆ86%, specificity 77âˆ82%, and AUC .86âˆ.92. Therefore, the vertical axis cut points provide a higher level of accuracy in comparison to the vector magnitude cut points. Study 5: Substantial to excellent classification agreement was found for the calibrated cut points. The calibrated sedentary cut point (ĸ =.66) provided comparable classification agreement with existing cut points (ĸ =.55âˆ.67). However, the existing moderate and vigorous cut points demonstrated low sensitivity (0.33âˆ33.33% and 1.33âˆ53.00%, respectively) and disproportionately high specificity (75.44âˆ.98.12% and 94.61âˆ100.00%, respectively), indicating that cut points developed in typically developing children are too high to accurately classify physical activity intensity in children with intellectual disabilities. Conclusions The studies reported in this thesis are the first to calibrate and validate accelerometry for the estimation of physical activity intensity in children with intellectual disabilities. In comparison with typically developing children, children with intellectual disabilities require lower cut points for the classification of moderate and vigorous intensity activity. Therefore, generalising existing cut points to children with intellectual disabilities will underestimate physical activity and introduce systematic measurement error, which could be a contributing factor to the low levels of physical activity reported for children with intellectual disabilities in previous research.

ABSTRACT; considering the diversity of environmental impacts related to dam reservoirs, this study aims at verifying the suitability of sediments accumulated in tropical climates, as agricultural resource. We have studied two Brazilian reservoirs, Três Marias and Tucuruí, whose sediments were classified, respectively, as silty clay and clayey silt. The accumulated material has medium contents of organic matter, acid values of pH(H20), high contents of Fe203 and Al203, and low diversity of clay mineral groups (only illite and kaolinite). Although sediments have significant amounts of phosphorus, the available form of this element never exceeds 1%. Data on statistical analysis of clusters, Pearson correlations and chemical fractionation of inorganic phosphorus, indicates that phosphorus adsorption capacity of sediments is predominantly associated with Fe. Even considering the low levels of the readily available form of phosphorus, for most variables, sediments exceed medium values for mineral soils, making this material advantageous for plant nutrition.

Cold smoking method is one of the commonest ways for fish smoking. It is done by the smoke that is the result of burning hard and soft woods is smoking rooms. Smoke includes a number of chemical constructs and its main part is poly aromatic hydrocarbons. More than one hundred kinds of these constructs are recognized in smoke that is produced from saturated hydrocarbons resulted from the solution of the woods Ligno cellulose in high temperature and lack of oxygen conditions. The high poisoning potentials and carcinogenic features sixteen constructs among them are proved and observed on humans. In this research, the PAH compounds were identified and observed in a three month period after smoking and during storing among three types of smoked fishes Silver carp and Caspian sea Sefid and herring. They are the most produced and consumed smoked fish in Iran. To find the relationship between the concentrations of PAH constructs and the amount of lipid in fish, first, the amount of lipid were determined separately in the skin and flesh of 30 samples of each type. The method used was Bligh and Dyer (1959). PAH compounds derivation were made for all skin and flesh samples smoked fish using organic solvents with Soxeleh and the derived samples were injected to gas chromatography (GC) by Hamilton injectors for determining their components quality and their quantity. The height of the used column was 25 meters and its diameter was 0.32 mm with the silica filler, nitrogen gas as carrier and flame ionization detector (FID) that are special for these constructs. For data analysis, Statistical tests were used by computer soft ware identified that the difference in the amount of lipid within the flesh and skin of each species and also among each other is significant. The largest amount was in Herrings flesh and skin, 18.74% in skin and 14.47% in flesh. The least amount in the skin 4.19% and the flesh 3.10% of Sefid. The amount in Silver carp was 13.28%in skin and 8.16% in flesh. The examination of the PAH compounds in smoked fish showed that is carcinogenic compounds; exist in these in these fish with different quantities in each. It seems that its amount is directly related to the amount of their lipid. The amount is different in flesh and skin. One of the most important reasons is the direct content of smoke and the concentration of lipid in tissues of all three types. The maintenance of the smoked fish for three months showed that most of PAH compounds were solved and their density decreased. The changes in density within time in different in each type and in flesh and skin. The amount of their receiving in human through the consumption of the smoked fish depends on the resulted density, the way and the amount of consumption and now we can determine and execute standards for the maximum dosage per day and per month regarding effective factors.

The goal of this research is to check if the strategic planning developed between 2001 and 2009 into the State University of Para (Universidade Federal do Pará - UFPA) was consolidated into its Academic Centers as a management practice. To this end, we identified the planning formalization degree of the Academic Centers, the conceived tools for the planning, the conception and the methodological process used in the tools elaboration, as also its implementation. The research used a qualitative approach: it is descriptive and it uses the case study technique. The data were gathered from primary and secondary sources, through bibliography, documents, and field researches through semi-structure interviews. The analysis and data interpretation were done by each investigated Academic Center from the analytics categories guided by the specifics goals. We used theoretic fundamental based principles and the university as a study empiric reference based on its structure analysis, organizational processes and institutional strategic plan. We inspected how the strategic planning process was developed throughout the fixed period and how the investigated Academic Centers are from the collected documents and interviews. The theoretical foundation was built from three axis: the Brazilian undergraduate and posgraduate education system; the university itself including its singularity and complexity as an organization; and the planning as a strategic management process. The main results show us that the UFPA has updated regulatory milestones, presenting organizational structure, laws, instructions, manuals and deployed management model that give the strategic planning development conditions beyond its administration, i. e., into its Academic Centers. The centers also present those established milestones and develop the basic planning processes of the institution. Those processes are conceived based on the institutional strategic planning and the managers mainly use the procedural orientation defined by the university management, from where the conceptual foundation is originated and propagated. According to the literature and to the research done in this work, we can conclude that the Academic Centers from the UFPA developed the strategic planning practice. This planning is organized and founded and guided the plans and decisions which avoided the disordered management and, according to the managers, allowed the advances and performance improvement. We can conclude that the UFPA built an important foundation with respect to the management professionalization. On the other hand, we can not conclude that the management practice is consolidated since there are weaknesses into the structuring of the technical teams and there is not any management tool for the implementation of the elaborated plans

This research examined the personnel policies of the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), aimed at the middle area, implemented by the President's Office of Personnel Management (PROGEP), through the Performance Management and Development from 2006 to 2009 period, in which Institutional Plan was implemented for Technical and administrative (PIDT) with a view to ascertaining whether these actions were developed in line with the ideas of managerialism or New Public Management (NPM). The study opted for qualitative research using interview as a tool to collect data. The informants were managers PROGEP / UFPA who acted in that period. Data interpretation was based on analysis of content from the collation of speeches and documents produced during the period with the managerial categories. Data analysis revealed that the management of people, UFPA has the characteristics of a hybrid management, observing the period studied two models of management: a bureaucratic, rational, focused on processes, contemporary face of public organizations, and other managerialist, adopted by PROGEP in obedience to the mandatory policies of the federal government, being much more present the characteristics of a personnel policy-oriented processes. Concludes that the personnel policy of the UFPA has not been fully tuned to managerialism in the surveyed period

ABSTRACT; This study characterizes the Portuguesa Higher Education Libraries with respect to the collection of data, its statistical analysis and subsequent use in the management and decision making of these Libraries. ln addition, the study also tried to obtain information on the level of satisfaction of staff and users in the same Libraries. Besides this descriptive component, this study includes an explicative component based on a theoretical model. This model first suggests the existence of a positive relationship between the use of statistical information in management and decision making in a Library and the level of satisfaction of users and staff. A second prediction of the model is the existence of an interdependence relationship between the level of satisfaction of the staff and the level of satisfaction of the users, as it is suggesting by the service-profit-chain theory (Heskett et al., 1994). The results reveal the existence of a culture of data collection, statistical analysis of the data and subsequent use in management and decision making among the participant libraries. The study also shows that the collection and use of statistical information has a positive impact on the level of satisfaction of the users but a negative impact on the level of satisfaction of staff regarding the job environment.

The health of people living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA) is nutritionally challenged in many nations of the world. The scourge has reduced socio-economic progress globally and more so in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) where its impact has been compounded by poverty and food insecurity. Good nutrition with proper drug use improves the quality of life for those infected but it is not known how PLWHA exposed to chronic malnutrition and food shortages from developing nations adjust their nutrition with use of Anti-Retro-viral Drugs (ARVs). This study assessed nutritional status, dietary practices, and dietary management of common illnesses that hinder daily food intake by the patients and use of ARVs with food recommendations provided by the health care givers. A descriptive case study design was used to sample 120 HIV-infected patients using systematic sampling procedure. These patients sought health care from an urban slum, Kibera AMREF clinic. Data were collected by anthropometric measurements, bio-chemical analysis, semi-structured questionnaire and secondary data. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and the Nutri-Survey software packages were used to analyze data. Dietary intakes of micro-nutrients were inadequate for >70% of the patients when compared to the Recommended Daily Requirements. When Body Mass Indices (BMI) were used, only 6.7% of the respondents were underweight (BMI<18.5kg/m2) and 9.2% were overweight (BMI> 25kg/m2), serum albumin test results (mean 3.34±0.06g/dl) showed 60.8% of the respondents were protein deficient and this was confirmed by low dietary protein intakes. The BMI was not related to dietary nutrient intakes, serum albumin and CD4 cell counts (p>0.05). It appeared that there was no significant difference in BMI readings at different categories of CD4 cell count (p>0.05) suggesting that the level of immunity did not affect weight gain with ARV as observed in many studies from developed countries. Malnutrition was, therefore, evident among the 60.8% of the cases as identified by serum albumin tests and food intake was not adequate (68%) for the patients as they ate once a day due to lack of food. National food and nutrition policy should incorporate food security boosting guidelines for the poor people infected with HIV and using ARVs.
