Among the soils in the Mato Grosso do Sul, stand out in the Pantanal biome, the Spodosols. Despite being recorded in considerable extensions, few studies aiming to characterize and classify these soils were performed. The purpose of this study was to characterize and classify soils in three areas of two physiographic types in the Taquari river basin: bay and flooded fields. Two trenches were opened in the bay area (P1 and P2) and two in the flooded field (P3 and P4). The third area (saline) with high sodium levels was sampled for further studies. In the soils in both areas the sand fraction was predominant and the texture from sand to sandy loam, with the main constituent quartz. In the bay area, the soil organic carbon in the surface layer (P1) was (OC) > 80 g kg(-1), being diagnosed as Histic epipedon. In the other profiles the surface horizons had low OC levels which, associated with other properties, classified them as Ochric epipedons. In the soils of the bay area (P1 and P2), the pH ranged from 5.0 to 7.5, associated with dominance of Ca2+ and Mg2+, with base saturation above 50 % in some horizons. In the flooded fields (P3 and P4) the soil pH ranged from 4.9 to 5.9, H+ contents were high in the surface horizons (0.8-10.5 cmol(c) kg(-1)), Ca2+ and Mg-2 contents ranged from 0.4 to 0.8 cmol(c) kg(-1) and base saturation was < 50 %. In the soils of the bay area (P1 and P2) iron was accumulated (extracted by dithionite - Fed) and OC in the spodic horizon; in the P3 and P4 soils only Fed was accumulated (in the subsurface layers). According to the criteria adopted by the Brazilian System of Soil Classification (SiBCS) at the subgroup level, the soils were classified as: P1: Organic Hydromorphic Ferrohumiluvic Spodosol. P2: Typical Orthic Ferrohumiluvic Spodosol. P3: Typical Hydromorphic Ferroluvic Spodosol. P4: Arenic Orthic Ferroluvic Spodosol.

The history of the quinine synthesis can be used as a case study to emphasize that science is influenced by social and historical processes. The first efforts toward the synthesis of this substance, which until recently was the only treatment for malaria, were by Perkin in 1856 when, trying to obtain quinine,,. he synthesized mauveine. Since then, the quest for the total synthesis of quinine involved several characters in a web of controversies. A major step in this process was made in 1918 by Rabe and Kindler, who proposed the synthesis of quinine from quinotoxine. Twenty-six years later, after obtaining the total synthesis of quinotoxine, Woodward and Doering announced the total synthesis of quinine. However, the lack of experimental details about Rabe and Kindler's process, associated with Woodward and Doering's failure to reproduce it, raised a series of doubts about the synthesis. Stork and colleagues questioned the veracity of the experimental data and even the scientific reputation of the involved researchers. Doubts remained alive until 2008, when Williams and Smith reported, not without reservations, the reproducibility of Rabe and Kindler's protocol. The scientific knowledge as a social and historical development, its legitimating process, and the absence of neutrality in science constitute aspects that can be discussed from this case study, providing significant contributions to science education, in particular, to the initial or continued training of chemistry teachers.

60 strains (belonging to the genera Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Leuconostoc and Enterococcus) were tested for their capacity to inhibit the growth of 3 strains of Campylobacter jejuni: Lactobacilli and bifidobacteria were left to grow in MRS or TPY broth at 37°C overnight in anaerobic conditions; Campylobacter jejuni was inoculated in blood agar plates at 37°C for 24-48 hours in microaerophilic conditions. The inhibition experiments were carried out in vitro using ”Spot agar test” and “Well diffusion assay” techniques testing both cellular activity and that of the surnatant. 11 strains proved to inhibit the growth of Campylobacter jejuni. These strains were subsequently analised analised in order to evaluate the resistance to particular situations of stress which are found in the gastrointestinal tract and during the industrial transformation processes (Starvation stress, osmotic stress, heat stress, resistance to pH and to bile salts). Resistance to starvation stress: all strains seemed to resist the stress (except one strain). Resistance to osmotic stress: all strains were relatively resistant to the concentrations of 6% w/v of NaCl (except one strain). Resistance to heat stress: only one strain showed little resistance to the 55°C temperature. Resistance to pH: In the presence of a low pH (2.5), many strains rapidly lost their viability after approximately 1 hour. Resistance to bile salts: Except for one strain, all strains seemed to be relatively resistant to the 2% w/v concentration of bile salts. Afterward, strains were identified by using phenotipic and molecular techniques. Phenotipic identification was carried out by using API 50 CHL (bioMérieux) and API 20 STREP identification system (bioMérieux); molecular identification with species-specific PCR: the molecular techniques confirmed the results by phenotipic identification. For testing the antibiotic resistance profile, bacterial strains were subcultured in MRS or TPY broth and incubated for 18 h at 37°C under anaerobic conditions. Antibiotics tested (Tetracycline, Trimethoprim, Cefuroxime, Kanamycin, Chloramphenicol, Vancomycin, Ampycillin, Sterptomycin, Erythromycin) were diluted to the final concentrations of: 2,4,8,16,32,64,128,256 mg/ml. Then, 20 μl fresh bacterial culture (final concentration in the plates approximately 106 cfu/ml) were added to 160 μl MRS or TPY broth and 20 μl antibiotic solution. As positive control the bacterial culture (20 ul) was added to broth (160 ul) and water (20 ul). Test was performed on plates P96, that after the inoculum were incubated for 24 h at 37oC, then the antibiotic resistance was determined by measuring the Optical Density (OD) at 620 nm with Multiscan EX. All strains showed a similar behaviour: resistance to all antibiotic tested. Further studies are needed.

The present issue analyses bluefin tuna (Thynnus thunnus) and swordfish (Xiphias glaudis) diet, caught by professional long-line fishing in the middle Adriatic Sea (Pomo pit). These species represent apex predators in pelagic environment that may play key roles in determining food web structure and ecosystem dynamics. The studies about their feedings habits, based upon stomach contents analysis, are important for the comprehension of biological and ecological interaction. Over the years, many studies have been performed on the diet of tuna and swordfish in the Mediterranean Sea. This research is based on a fairly wide number of analyzed stomach contents, in comparison with the previous ones. In this work, the analysis of 340 stomach contents of bluefin tuna caught by long-line in the central Adriatic sea confirms in general the opportunistic behaviour of this species. Finding support the hypothesis that Adriatic tuna and swordfish chase their food over a wide bathymetric zone and probably near the surface at night. No indication of food preference respect to size of predator or sample season are found. It seems that the two species are able to cohabit because their trophic niche are not overlapped, changing during the time and the vertical and horizontal space.

Background: Annual syphilis testing was reintroduced in the Swiss HIV Cohort Study (SHCS) in 2004. We prospectively studied occurrence, risk factors, clinical manifestations, diagnostic approaches and treatment of syphilis. Methods: Over a period of 33 months, participants with positive test results for Treponema pallidum hemagglutination assay were studied using the SHCS database and an additional structured case report form. Results: Of 7244 cohort participants, 909 (12.5%) had positive syphilis serology. Among these, 633 had previously been treated and had no current signs or symptoms of syphilis at time of testing. Of 218 patients with newly detected untreated syphilis, 20% reported genitooral contacts as only risk behavior and 60% were asymptomatic. Newly detected syphilis was more frequent among men who have sex with men (MSM) [adjusted odds ratio (OR) 2.8, P < 0.001], in persons reporting casual sexual partners (adjusted OR 2.8, P < 0.001) and in MSM of younger age (P = 0.05). Only 35% of recommended cerebrospinal fluid (CFS) examinations were performed. Neurosyphilis was diagnosed in four neurologically asymptomatic patients; all of them had a Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) titer of 1:≥32. Ninety-one percent of the patients responded to treatment with at least a four-fold decline in VDRL titer. Conclusion: Syphilis remains an important coinfection in the SHCS justifying reintroduction of routine screening. Genitooral contact is a significant way of transmission and young MSM are at high risk for syphilis. Current guidelines to rule out neurosyphilis by CSF analysis are inconsistently followed in clinical practice. Serologic treatment response is above 90% in the era of combination antiretroviral therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the impact of a community based Helicobacter pylori screening and eradication programme on the incidence of dyspepsia, resource use, and quality of life, including a cost consequences analysis. DESIGN: H pylori screening programme followed by randomised placebo controlled trial of eradication. SETTING: Seven general practices in southwest England. PARTICIPANTS: 10,537 unselected people aged 20-59 years were screened for H pylori infection (13C urea breath test); 1558 of the 1636 participants who tested positive were randomised to H pylori eradication treatment or placebo, and 1539 (99%) were followed up for two years. INTERVENTION: Ranitidine bismuth citrate 400 mg and clarithromycin 500 mg twice daily for two weeks or placebo. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Primary care consultation rates for dyspepsia (defined as epigastric pain) two years after randomisation, with secondary outcomes of dyspepsia symptoms, resource use, NHS costs, and quality of life. RESULTS: In the eradication group, 35% fewer participants consulted for dyspepsia over two years compared with the placebo group (55/787 v 78/771; odds ratio 0.65, 95% confidence interval 0.46 to 0.94; P = 0.021; number needed to treat 30) and 29% fewer participants had regular symptoms (odds ratio 0.71, 0.56 to 0.90; P = 0.05). NHS costs were 84.70 pounds sterling (74.90 pounds sterling to 93.91 pounds sterling) greater per participant in the eradication group over two years, of which 83.40 pounds sterling (146 dollars; 121 euro) was the cost of eradication treatment. No difference in quality of life existed between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Community screening and eradication of H pylori is feasible in the general population and led to significant reductions in the number of people who consulted for dyspepsia and had symptoms two years after treatment. These benefits have to be balanced against the costs of eradication treatment, so a targeted eradication strategy in dyspeptic patients may be preferable.

Even though depressions and depressive symptoms are frequently observed in patients with medical diseases, their psychological problems are often neither diagnosed nor treated. Diagnosis of mood state might be easy in isolated cases yet it often is not since the precise nature of normal mood cannot be expressed in quantitative terms. Furthermore, depression can only be diagnosed based on the doctor's clinical appraisal and the patient's own description of his/her complaints. There is no gold standard on which depressive symptoms can be based on--and further on, depression is not a diagnosis. Instead, it is a syndrome that calls for differential diagnoses before treatment can be offered. Diagnosing depressive comorbidity in patients with medical complaints is even more difficult because of the overlap between symptoms of depression and accompanying symptoms of the somatic illness e.g. lack of energy. Although depressive states have been known to be a risk factor for the prognosis of patients with coronary heart disease for a long time, there is a paucity of research about the therapy these patients undergo due to the fact that tricyclic anti-depressants can have cardiotoxic effects on patients with heart disease. The treatment of depression in these patients has become a much lower risk since the introduction of serotonin reuptake inhibitors. There is widespread evidence that depressive comorbidity has a negative impact on the prognosis of medical disorders. Despite the complex nature of diagnosing depression, proper diagnosis and treatment is increasingly important in internal medicine and especially cardiology.
