A novel method of purification for single-walled carbon nanotubes, prepared by an arc-discharge method, is described. The method involves a combination of acid washing followed by high temperature hydrogen treatment to remove the metal nanoparticles and amorphous carbon present in the as-synthesized single-walled carbon nanotubes. The purified single-walled carbon nanotubes have been characterised by low-angle X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, thermo-gravimetric analysis and Raman spectroscopy.

Nanostructured materials have attracted considerable interest in recent years due to their properties which differ strongly from their bulk phase and potential applications in nanoscale electronic and optoelectronic devices. Metal oxide nanostructures can be synthesized by variety of different synthesis techniques developed in recent years such as thermal decomposition, sol-gel technique, chemical coprecipitation, hydrothermal process, solvothermal process, spray pyrolysis, polyol process etc. All the above processes go through a tedious synthesis procedure followed by prolonged heat treatment at elevated temperature and are time consuming. In the present work we describe a rapid microwave irradiation-assisted chemical synthesis technique for the growth of nanoparticles, nanorods, and nanotubes of a variety of metal oxides in the presence of an appropriate surfactant, without the use of any templates The method is simple, inexpensive, and helps one to prepare nanostructures in a very simple way, and in a very short time, measured in minutes. The synthesis procedure employs high quality metalorganic complexes (typically -diketonates) featuring a direct metal-to-oxygen bond in its molecular structure. The complex is dissolved in a suitable solvent, often with a surfactant added, and the solution then subjected to microwave irradiation in a domestic microwave oven operating at 2.45 GHz frequency with power varying from 160-800 W, from a few seconds to a few minutes, leading to the formation of corresponding metal oxides. This method has been used successfully to synthesize nanostructures of a variety of binary and ternary metal oxides such as ZnO, CdO, Fe2O3, CuO, Ga2O3, Gd2O3, ZnFe2O4, etc. There is an observed variation in the morphology of the nanostructures with the change of different parameters such as microwave power, irradiation time, appropriate solvent, surfactant type and concentration. Cationic, anionic, nonionic and polymeric surfactants have been used to generate a variety of nanostructures. Even so, to remove the surfactant, there is either no need of heat treatment or a very brief exposure to heat suffices, to yield highly pure and crystalline oxide materials as prepared. By adducting the metal complexes, the shape of the nanostructures can be controlled further. In this manner, very well formed, single-crystalline, hexagonal nanorods and nanotubes of ZnO have been formed. Adducting the zinc complex leads to the formation of tapered ZnO nanorods with a very fine tip, suitable for electron emission applications. Particle size and their monodispersity can be controlled by a suitable choice of a precursor complex, the surfactant, and its concentration. The resulting metal oxide nanostructures have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and electron emission measurements.

The Turkevich method for synthesizing gold nanoparticles, using sodium citrate as the reducing agent, is renowned for its ability to produce biocompatible colloids with mean size >10 nm. Here we show that monodisperse gold nanoparticles in the 5-10 nm size range can be synthesized by simply reversing the order of addition of reactants, i.e. adding chloroauric acid to citrate solution. Kinetic studies and electron microscopic characterization revealed that the reactivity of chloroauric acid, initial molar ratio of citrate to chloroauric acid (MR), and reaction mixture pH play an important role in producing monodisperse gold nanoparticles. Reversing the order of addition also enhanced the stabilization of nanoparticles at high MR values. Remarkably, the system exhibits a `memory' of the order of addition, even when the timescale of mixing is much shorter than the timescale of synthesis. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

A finite element method for solving multidimensional population balance systems is proposed where the balance of fluid velocity, temperature and solute partial density is considered as a two-dimensional system and the balance of particle size distribution as a three-dimensional one. The method is based on a dimensional splitting into physical space and internal property variables. In addition, the operator splitting allows to decouple the equations for temperature, solute partial density and particle size distribution. Further, a nodal point based parallel finite element algorithm for multi-dimensional population balance systems is presented. The method is applied to study a crystallization process assuming, for simplicity, a size independent growth rate and neglecting agglomeration and breakage of particles. Simulations for different wall temperatures are performed to show the effect of cooling on the crystal growth. Although the method is described in detail only for the case of d=2 space and s=1 internal property variables it has the potential to be extendable to d+s variables, d=2, 3 and s >= 1. The symmetrized density matrix renormalization group method is used to study linear and nonlinear optical properties of free base porphine and metalloporphine. Long-range interacting model, namely, Pariser-Parr-Pople model is employed to capture the quantum many-body effect in these systems. The nonlinear optical coefficients are computed within the correction vector method. The computed singlet and triplet low-lying excited state energies and their charge densities are in excellent agreement with experimental as well as many other theoretical results. The rearrangement of the charge density at carbon and nitrogen sites, on excitation, is discussed. From our bond order calculation, we conclude that porphine is well described by the 18-annulenic structure in the ground state and the molecule expands upon excitation. We have modeled the regular metalloporphine by taking an effective electric field due to the metal ion and computed the excitation spectrum. Metalloporphines have D(4h) symmetry and hence have more degenerate excited states. The ground state of metalloporphines shows 20-annulenic structure, as the charge on the metal ion increases. The linear polarizability seems to increase with the charge initially and then saturates. The same trend is observed in third order polarizability coefficients. The W, V, Ce, Zr, Fe, and Cu metal ion substituted nanocrystalline anatase TiO2 was prepared by solution combustion method and characterized by XRD, Raman, BET, EPR, XPS, IR TGA, UV absorption, and photoluminescence measurements. The structural studies indicate that the solid solution formation was limited to a narrow range of concentrations of the dopant ions. The photocatalytic degradation of 4-nitrophenol under UV and solar exposure was investigated with Ti1-xMxO2±δ. The degradation rates of 4-nitrophenol with these catalysts were lesser than the degradation rates of 4-nitrophenol with undoped TiO2 both with UV exposure and solar radiation. However, the photocatalytic activities of most metal ion doped TiO2 are higher than the activity of the commercial TiO2, Degussa P25. The decrease in photocatalytic activity is correlated with decrease in photoluminescence due to electron states of metal ions within the band gap of TiO2.

A mild, environmentally friendly method for reduction of aromatic nitro group to amine is reported, using zinc powder in aqueous solutions of chelating ethers. The donor ether acts as a ligand and also serves as a co-solvent. Water is the proton source. This procedure is also a new method for the activation of zinc for electron transfer reduction of aromatic nitro compounds. The reduction is accomplished in a neutral medium and other reducing groups remained unaffected. The ethers used are dioxolane, 1,4-dioxane, ethoxymethoxyethane, dimethoxymethane, 1,2-dimethoxyethane, and diglyme.

The Turkevich-Frens synthesis starting conditions are expanded, ranging the gold salt concentrations up to 2 mM and citrate/gold(III) molar ratios up to 18:1. For each concentration of the initial gold salt solution, the citrate/gold(III) molar ratios are systematically varied from 2:1 to 18:1 and both the size and size distribution of the resulting gold nanoparticles are compared. This study reveals a different nanoparticle size evolution for gold salt solutions ranging below 0.8 mM compared to the case of gold salt solutions above 0.8 mM. In the case of Au3+]<0.8 mM, both the size and size distribution vary substantially with the citrate/gold(III) ratio, both displaying plateaux that evolve inversely to Au3+] at larger ratios. Conversely, for Au3+]>= 0.8 mM, the size and size distribution of the synthesized gold nanoparticles continuously rise as the citrate/gold(III) ratio is increased. A starting gold salt concentration of 0.6 mM leads to the formation of the most monodisperse gold nanoparticles (polydispersity index<0.1) for a wide range of citrate/gold(III) molar ratios (from 4:1 to 18:1). Via a model for the formation of gold nanoparticles by the citrate method, the experimental trends in size could be qualitatively predicted:the simulations showed that the destabilizing effect of increased electrolyte concentration at high initial Au3+] is compensated by a slight increase in zeta potential of gold nanoparticles to produce concentrated dispersion of gold nanoparticles of small sizes.

The solvated metal atom dispersion (SMAD) method has been used for the synthesis of colloids of metal nanoparticles. It is a top-down approach involving condensation of metal atoms in low temperature solvent matrices in a SMAD reactor maintained at 77 K. Warming of the matrix results in a slurry of metal atoms that interact with one another to form particles that grow in size. The organic solvent solvates the particles and acts as a weak capping agent to halt/slow down the growth process to a certain extent. This as-prepared colloid consists of metal nanoparticles that are quite polydisperse. In a process termed as digestive ripening, addition of a capping agent to the as-prepared colloid which is polydisperse renders it highly monodisperse either under ambient or thermal conditions. In this, as yet not well-understood process, smaller particles grow and the larger ones diminish in size until the system attains uniformity in size and a dynamic equilibrium is established. Using the SMAD method in combination with digestive ripening process, highly monodisperse metal, core-shell, alloy, and composite nanoparticles have been synthesized. This article is a review of our contributions together with some literature reports on this methodology to realize various nanostructured materials.

A combination of chemical and thermal annealing techniques has been employed to synthesize a rarely reported nanocup structure of Mn doped ZnO with good yield. Nanocup structures are obtained by thermally annealing the powder samples consisting of nanosheets, synthesized chemically at room temperature, isochronally in a furnace at 200-500 degrees C temperature range for 2 h. Strong excitonic absorption in the UV and photoluminescence (PL) emission in UV-visible regions are observed in all the samples at room temperature. The sample obtained at 300 degrees C annealing temperature exhibits strong PL emission in the UV due to near-band-edge emission along with very week defect related emissions in the visible regions. The synthesized samples have been found to be exhibiting stable optical properties for 10 months which proved the unique feature of the presented technique of synthesis of nanocup structures. Brust-Schiffrin synthesis (BSS) of metal nanoparticles has emerged as a major breakthrough in the field for its ability to produce highly stable thiol functionalized nanoparticles. In this work, we use a detailed population balance model to conclude that particle formation in BSS is controlled by a new synthesis route: continuous nucleation, growth, and capping of particles throughout the synthesis process. The new mechanism, quite different from the others known in the literature (classical LaMer mechanism, sequential nucleation-growth-capping, and thermodynamic mechanism), successfully explains key features of BSS, including size tuning by varying the amount of capping agent instead of the widely used approach of varying the amount of reducing agent. The new mechanism captures a large body of experimental observations quantitatively, including size tuning and only a marginal effect of the parameters otherwise known to affect particle synthesis sensitively. The new mechanism predicts that, in a constant synthesis environment, continuous nucleation-growth-capping mechanism leads to complete capping of particles (no more growth) at the same size, while the new ones are born continuously, in principle leading to synthesis of more monodisperse particles. This prediction is validated through new experimental measurements.

FT-IR (4000-400 cm(-1)) and FT-Raman (4000-200 cm(-1)) spectral measurements on solid 2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile (2,6-DCBN) have been done. The molecular geometry, harmonic vibrational frequencies and bonding features in the ground state have been calculated by density functional theory at the B3LYP/6-311++G (d,p) level. A comparison between the calculated and the experimental results covering the molecular structure has been made. The assignments of the fundamental vibrational modes have been done on the basis of the potential energy distribution (PED). To investigate the influence of intermolecular hydrogen bonding on the geometry, the charge distribution and the vibrational spectrum of 2,6-DCBN; calculations have been done for the monomer as well as the tetramer. The intermolecular interaction energies corrected for basis set superposition error (BSSE) have been calculated using counterpoise method. Based on these results, the correlations between the vibrational modes and the structure of the tetramer have been discussed. Molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) contour map has been plotted in order to predict how different geometries could interact. The Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analysis has been done for the chemical interpretation of hyperconjugative interactions and electron density transfer between occupied (bonding or lone pair) orbitals to unoccupied (antibonding or Rydberg) orbitals. UV spectrum was measured in methanol solution. The energies and oscillator strengths were calculated by Time Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) and matched to the experimental findings. TD-DFT method has also been used for theoretically studying the hydrogen bonding dynamics by monitoring the spectral shifts of some characteristic vibrational modes involved in the formation of hydrogen bonds in the ground and the first excited state. The C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) chemical shifts of the molecule were calculated by the Gauge independent atomic orbital (GIAO) method and compared with experimental results. Standard thermodynamic functions have been obtained and changes in thermodynamic properties on going from monomer to tetramer have been presented. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) is an engineering material which is used for applications such as magnetic cores, magnetic switches, hyperthermia based tumor treatment, and as contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging. Utility of ferrites nanoparticles hinges on its size, dispersibility in solutions, and synthetic control over its coercivity. In this work, we establish correlations between room temperature co-precipitation conditions, and these crucial materials parameters. Furthermore, post-synthesis annealing conditions are correlated with morphology, changes in crystal structure and magnetic properties. We disclose the synthesis and process conditions helpful in obtaining easily sinterable CoFe2O4 nanoparticles with coercive magnetic flux density (H-c) in the range 5.5-31.9 kA/m and M-s in the range 47.9-84.9 A.m(2)Kg(-1). At a grain size of similar to 54 +/- 2 nm (corresponding to 1073 K sintering temperature), multi-domain behavior sets in, which is indicated by a decrease in H-c. In addition, we observe an increase in lattice constant with respect to grain size, which is the inverse of what is expected of in ferrites. Our results suggest that oxygen deficiency plays a crucial role in explaining this inverse trend. We expect the method disclosed here to be a viable and scalable alternative to thermal decomposition based CoFe2O4 synthesis. The magnetic trends reported will aid in the optimization of functional CoFe2O4 nanoparticles

We demonstrate an electrochemical technique for the large scale synthesis of high quality few layer graphene sheets (FLGS) directly from graphite using oxalic acid (a weak acid) as the electrolyte. One of the interesting observations is that the FLGS are stable at least up to 800 degrees C and hence have potential application in solid oxide fuel cells as a gas diffusion layer.

In this work, we have reported the synthesis of dahlia flower-like ZnO nanostructures consisting of human finger-like nanorods by the hydrothermal method at 120 degrees C and without using any capping agent. Optical properties of the samples, including UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence (PL) emission characteristics are determined by dispersing the samples in water as well as in ethanol media. The quenching of PL emission intensity along-with the red shifting of the PL emission peak are observed when the samples are dispersed in water in comparison to those obtained after dispersing the samples in ethanol. It has been found that PL emission characteristic, particularly the spectral nature of PL emission, of the samples remains almost unaltered (except some improvement in UV PL emission) even after thermally annealing it for 2 h at the temperature of 300 degrees C. Also the synthesized powder samples, kept in a plastic container, showed a very stable PL emission even after 15 months of synthesis. Therefore, the synthesized samples might be useful for their applications in future optoelectronics devices. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
