Buchbesprechung im politischen Kontext des Nationalsozialismus

Die vorliegende Arbeit analysiert das Buchbesprechungswesen in seiner Entwicklung unter nationalsozialistischem Einfluss, beginnend mit der ‚Kampfzeit‘ der ‚Bewegung‘, nach Veröffentlichung der programmatischen weltanschaulichen Ziele, und fortgesetzt nach der Machtübernahme 1933, nunmehr unter den Bedingungen totalitärer Herrschaft. Im ersten der beiden Hauptteile der Arbeit wird an charakteristischen Beispielen gezeigt, wie die extreme Rechte in der Weimarer Republik danach trachtete, die Funktion der Buchbesprechung in Richtung einer gesinnungsmäßigen Bevormundung der Leser zu verändern. Unter Ausnutzung systembedingter Schwachstellen und durch Verstärkung vorhandener Ressentiments in der Bevölkerung wurde ein geistiger Erosionsprozeß der Öffentlichkeit in Gang gesetzt. Das engte die freie Kommunikation fortschreitend ein. Der zweite Hauptteil behandelt die nach 1933 einsetzende Schaffung rechtlicher Grundlagen für die Ausschaltung aller ‚Nichtarier‘ und die geistige Gleichschaltung und weltanschauliche Indoktrinierung der Kulturschaffenden, einschließlich deren Überwachung durch gezielt dazu eingerichtete Organisationen. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt dabei dem für die Massenbeeinflussung neugebildeten Reichsministerium für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda. Goebbels veranlasste eine stark reglementierende stufenweise Neuordnung des Buchbesprechungswesens zur umfassenden Lenkung und Kontrolle von Rezensenten, Verlegern und Schriftleitern. Die Reglementierung gipfelte in dem am 1.7.1937 in Kraft getretenen Verbot der Kunstkritik. Kritische Rezensionen und Diskussionen waren unerwünscht und sollten auf diese Weise endgültig verhindert werden, ganz im Sinne der von Hitler in Mein Kampf postulierten Absichten. Die Folgen dieses Kritikverbots waren zunehmendes Schweigen, Zurückweichen und Unsicherheit bei Kulturvermittlern und Lesern. Die verheißene Erneuerung des Rezensionswesens blieb ebenso Trugbild wie die ersehnten NS-Literaturschöpfungen. Die vorliegende Arbeit weist exemplarisch nach, wie im komplexen Prozeß von Demokratieverfall und Diktatur die ursprüngliche Funktion der Buchbesprechung durch Reduzierung und Ausrichtung auf eine politisch-ideologische Lenkungsfunktion ausgehöhlt und entwertet wurde.

Ringier (Familie)

Famille de pasteurs, politiciens et entrepreneurs de Zofingue, attestée pour la première fois en 1527, lorsque leur aïeul Jean, tonnelier originaire de Nîmes, obtint la bourgeoisie de Zofingue. Michael (1521-1605), avoyer, l'un de ses cinq fils, est l'ancêtre de la branche des imprimeurs et éditeurs. Après lui, de nombreux R. consolidèrent durablement l'influence de la famille. A partir du XVIIIe s., divers membres firent des carrières politiques, tels Samuel (1706-1786), avoyer, et Rudolf Friedrich (1805-1886), président de la ville. Les R. furent aussi très liés à l'Eglise. Le fils de Michael, Moritz (1557-1615), fut pasteur et doyen à Zofingue. Jusqu'au XIXe s., la famille compta une trentaine d'ecclésiastiques, essentiellement des pasteurs officiant sur le territoire bernois, tels Johann Heinrich ( -> 3) et Michael ( -> 8). Les conseillers Beat (1712-1778) et Niklaus (1734-1766) furent les premiers R. actifs dans la production protoindustrielle de drap. D'autres négociants suivirent jusqu'au milieu du XIXe s. L'architecte Niklaus Emanuel (1744-1815) construisit l'hôtel de ville de Zofingue (1792-1795) de style baroque tardif. Johann Rudolf ( -> 4) se distingua sous la République helvétique (1798-1803). Samuel (1767-1826), conseiller municipal de Zofingue, créa les armoiries du canton d'Argovie en 1803. Les R. s'affirmèrent sur le plan cantonal avec Karl Ludwig ( -> 6), chancelier, et Arnold ( -> 1), conseiller d'Etat et plusieurs fois landamman, et sur le plan fédéral avec Johann Rudolf ( -> 5), conseiller national, et Gottlieb ( -> 2), conseiller aux Etats et chancelier de la Confédération. Johann Rudolf (1803-1874) fonda, en 1833, l'imprimerie Ringier à Zofingue, reprise par son fils Franz Emil (1837-1898). A partir de 1898, Paul August ( -> 9), représentant de la troisième génération d'imprimeurs, agrandit l'entreprise dont il fit la principale imprimerie et maison d'édition de Suisse. Cette expansion se poursuivit après 1960 sous son fils Hans (1906-2003). Avec les fils de celui-ci, Christoph (naissance1941, dans la firme jusqu'en 1991) et Michael (naissance1949), Ringier devint, à partir de 1985, une entreprise multinationale et multimédia. Intermittent spike-wave dynamics in a heterogeneous, spatially extended neural mass model

Generalised epileptic seizures are frequently accompanied by sudden, reversible transitions from low amplitude, irregular background activity to high amplitude, regular spike-wave discharges (SWD) in the EEG. The underlying mechanisms responsible for SWD generation and for the apparently spontaneous transitions to SWD and back again are still not fully understood. Specifically, the role of spatial cortico-cortical interactions in ictogenesis is not well studied. We present a macroscopic, neural mass model of a cortical column which includes two distinct time scales of inhibition. This model can produce both an oscillatory background and a pathological SWD rhythm. We demonstrate that coupling two of these cortical columns can lead to a bistability between out-of-phase, low amplitude background dynamics and in-phase, high amplitude SWD activity. Stimuli can cause state-dependent transitions from background into SWD. In an extended local area of cortex, spatial heterogeneities in a model parameter can lead to spontaneous reversible transitions from a desynchronised background to synchronous SWD due to intermittency. The deterministic model is therefore capable of producing absence seizure-like events without any time dependent adjustment of model parameters. The emergence of such mechanisms due to spatial coupling demonstrates the importance of spatial interactions in modelling ictal dynamics, and in the study of ictogenesis.

Cortical local and long-range synchronization interplay in human absence seizure initiation

Brain activity relies on transient, fluctuating interactions between segregated neuronal populations. Synchronization within a single and between distributed neuronal clusters reflects the dynamics of these cooperative patterns. Thus absence epilepsy can be used as a model for integrated, large-scale investigation of the emergence of pathological collective dynamics in the brain. Indeed, spike-wave discharges (SWD) of an absence seizure are thought to reflect abnormal cortical hypersynchronization. In this paper, we address two questions: how and where do SWD arise in the human brain? Therefore, we explored the spatio-temporal dynamics of interactions within and between widely distributed cortical sites using magneto-encephalographic recordings of spontaneous absence seizures. We then extracted, from their time-frequency analysis, local synchronization of cortical sources and long-range synchronization linking distant sites. Our analyses revealed a reproducible sequence of 1) long-range desynchronization, 2) increased local synchronization and 3) increased long-range synchronization. Although both local and long-range synchronization displayed different spatio-temporal profiles, their cortical projection within an initiation time window overlap and reveal a multifocal fronto-central network. These observations contradict the classical view of sudden generalized synchronous activities in absence epilepsy. Furthermore, they suggest that brain states transition may rely on multi-scale processes involving both local and distant interactions.

Berns goldene Zeit. Das 18. Jahrhundert neu entdeckt

Wie bereits die drei ersten Bände der Arbeitsgemeinschaft Berner Zeiten, behandelt nun auch Band vier "Berns goldene Zeit" die Geschichte von Stadt und Landschaft Bern. Er berücksichtigt das Kantonsgebiet in den Grenzen vor 1798 und somit auch den bernischen Aargau und die Waadt. Er öffnet zudem den Blick über die Epochenzäsur von 1798 hinaus auf die Umbruchsphase der Helvetischen Republik und der Mediation. Der Anspruch, eine Gesamtschau zu vermitteln, schliesst konzeptionell alle Schichten und Gruppen der Bevölkerung - Eliten ebenso wie die breite Bevölkerung - mit ein. Dies gilt ebenso für sämtliche geschichtlichen Felder - Verfassung, Politik und Verwaltung, Wirtschaft, Umwelt und Gesellschaft, das geistige und kulturelle Leben in Kirche, Wissenschaften und Künsten.

Why Death Matters: Understanding Gameworld Experience

This article presents a study of the staging and implementation of death and the death penalty in a number of popular MMOGs and relates it to players general experience of gameworlds. Game mechanics, writings and stories by designers and players, and the results of an online survey are analysed and discussed. The study shows that the death penalty is implemented much in the same way across worlds; that death can be both trivial and non-trivial, part of the grind of everyday life, or essential in the creation of heroes, depending on context. In whatever function death may serves, it is argued that death plays an important part in the shaping and emergence of the social culture of a world, and in the individual players experience of life within it.
